“I May Destroy You” premiered last year on HBO to rapturous praise. The series is created by Michaela Coel, who also serves as executive producer, writer, co-director, and star. Her singular voice and creative vision have helped the limited series stand out in a crowded year. Scroll down to watch our seven in-depth video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the series.
Coel used an experience from her own life as a jumping off point for the story. Here she plays Arabella, a millennial social media star turned best-selling author. During a late night writing session, Arabella is raped when she takes a break to have a few drinks with friends. After waking up in a daze, memories of the violent experience come back to her in fuzzy fragments. With the help of her friends Terry (Weruche Opia) and Kwame (Paapa Essiedu), she endeavors to work through her trauma and rebuild her life.

Casting directors wade through hundreds and hundreds of actors sometimes just for one role, and it’s safe to say they’ve seen it all when it comes to thespians trying to stand out from the crowd and land the part. When asked to share some do’s and don’ts for auditioning actors during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch above), Julie Harkin (“I May Destroy You” and “Industry”) had one key one. “Don’t get naked. I’ve had some self-tapes recently with people with their tops off. Don’t do that!” she exclaims.
As for what you should do, “just be natural,” she advises, with which our other panelists Kelly Valentine Hendry (“Bridgerton”), Victoria Thomas (“The Mosquito Coast”), Theo Park (“Ted Lasso”) and Michael V. Nicolo (“Young Rock”) all agreed. “I’m a big champion of being yourself and being who...

HBO’s “I May Destroy You” and “Industry” are two very different shows, but casting director Julie Harkin approached both in a similar way: shining a light on new or little-known talent.
With “I May Destroy You,” Harkin was instructed by creator, writer, co-director and star Michaela Coel to “give opportunity to people that wouldn’t necessarily get given the opportunities that we were giving them,” she shares during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Michaela was a very open collaborator who just wanted to push inclusivity in terms of how we cast the show but also how everybody behaved behind the scenes. … She said to me very early on, ‘Go find the African-American, Black actors who have not had any screen opportunity to date and find me the actors of color who have not had their moments onscreen.

“I May Destroy You” took TV by storm this summer after its June 7 premiere on HBO. Michaela Coel’s show about a woman working through the aftermath of her sexual assault has made for one of the most arresting new shows in recent memory, with a standout performance from Coel herself. While her character Arabella anchors “I May Destroy You,” though, the series gains even more perspective from her friends Terry (Weruche Opia) and Kwame (Paapa Essiedu), whose own sexual experiences gain new and disturbing dimensions the longer they look at them.
Coel and Essiedu already knew each other from drama school, but Opia landing the part of Terry hinged on locking into a rhythm with Coel without any preexisting history. As Opia puts it, though, finding that dynamic ended up being one of the easiest parts of her audition. “There was just immediate chemistry,” Opia says. “It just felt...
