The magic of cinema. The lights dim, the screen illuminates, and we’re transported to another world. But what happens when that world contains… another world? Horror has long been a genre that loves to play with its audience, and nothing says “I see you” quite like a movie-within-a-movie. It’s like a Russian doll of terror, layers of scares unfolding one after another… and who doesn’t love a good nesting nightmare?
Let’s dive into the meta-madness of horror films that give us a double dose of dread, with the movie-within-a-movie trope!
Universal 10. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) Movie-Within-a-Movie: Halloween (1978)
Dr. Daniel Challis (Tom Atkins) stumbles upon a sinister plot by the Silver Shamrock mask company to harness Stonehenge’s mystical powers and harm children on Halloween night. Amidst this chaos, a TV commercial advertises the original Halloween movie, suggesting a universe where Michael Myers’ terror is mere fiction.

A lot of fans have been anxiously waiting for more films set in the world of the 2006 meta slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here) ever since that movie was release. The follow-up Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon still hasn’t managed to make it into production – but David J. Stieve, who wrote Behind the Mask with Scott Glosserman (and also wrote the Before the Mask script years ago) has made a short film called Wait for It, which is said to be set in the world of Leslie Vernon. That short film is now making the festival rounds and has been screened at a handful of festivals so far, with more festival screenings coming up this fall.

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 2006 release that has built up a solid cult following, but still hasn’t drawn in as many fans as it deserves. The movie is Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Directed by Scott Glosserman from a screenplay he wrote with David J. Stieve, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has the following synopsis: You know legendary maniacs Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. Now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho-slasher. Vernon, a good-natured killing machine, invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor, evades his psychiatrist/nemesis, deconstructs Freudian symbolism, and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree.

"Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" has always been one of those horror films that seemed destined for a small but passionate fanbase. Both a love letter and a satire of the slasher subgenre, it has never quite broken into the mainstream, but the people that have watched it continue to sing its praises 17 years later. It's genuinely a really cool take on the mockumentary format and questions why audiences are so much more attached to killers than their victims. If the boom of the true-crime subgenre is anything to go by, perhaps these ideas are more important to discuss than ever before.
Thankfully, it sounds like we're about to return to the world where our favorite slashers like Michael, Freddy, and Jason are real. Bloody Disgusting exclusively revealed the first look at "Wait for It," a short film from "Behind the Mask" screenwriter David J. Stieve, which...

Set within the same universe as Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Wait For It is a loving deconstruction of the slasher genre. Seen from the perspective of survivor girl, Darcy (Lily Anne Harrison), living in the aftermath of her own encounter with a psycho-slasher killer.
We follow her as she travels home after a night out with friends, always remaining wary of the inevitable return of her tormentor.

I don’t always have a reason to go back to older movies for review, but having just recently revisited this movie, I had to talk about it. Why? Well, because it’s phenomenal, but also because… well… not many people actually talk about it, and that’s a shame.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a 2006 film from director Scott Glosserman, and takes a different approach to the tried and tested and well trodden slasher genre. I recall seeing this flick back when it came out, and I loved it. Some 14 years later I was curious if it held up, and was over the moon that it did. It really did. The story follows a young documentary crew who follow Leslie Vernon,...

Having only just gotten into collecting Blu-rays within the last couple of years, I’ve become interested in the different ways some of these releases catch our attention as horror fans. Sometimes we get those movies that we’ve always loved and jump on immediately. Other times, we get the obscure films that might wind up being a hidden gem. And then there are those releases that remind us to revisit the movies we haven’t seen in years. Such was the case for me and the 2006 meta-slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. I remember seeing the movie within a year or so of its release, enjoying it, but never really feeling the need for a rewatch until Scream Factory announced their Collector’s Edition.

More often than not, a film won't get the acclaim that it should, even if it builds a fan base. Such is the case with Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon. Like Scream in the sense that it's a meta film, Behind The Mask follows a student journalist team as they follow the boisterous serial killer Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel). Led by interviewer Taylor (Angela Goethals), the team tows the line of what's moral and lawful and what is aiding and abetting this killer. Their curiosity gets the best of them before the decide to try to help the teens that Vernon is stalking, but is it too late? Is Vernon the next "great" serial killer or monster in the vein of Freddy, Michael Myers, or Jason?...

Shining a satirical ray of light on the horror genre is nothing new, as a number of films (both indie and mainstream) have done this for a few decades now, but only one (that I know of), Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, states that in its own cinematic world, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger actually existed. Don't believe me? Check out some Blu-ray clips from Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of Scott Glosserman's cult movie before it hits shelves on March 27th.

While in Austin at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to catch up with a variety of folks responsible for the modern cult classic Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which celebrated its 10th anniversary with several screenings as part of the fest’s midnight lineup. Those on hand for the interview included co-writer/director Scott Glosserman, co-writer/producer David J. Stieve, star Nathan Baesel, and co-star Ben Pace.

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Bryan Cranston and Zach Braff are among those set to cameo.

Many psycho killers in film and television are imposing, scary creeps that no one in their right mind would ever get into a car with, or even sit next to on public transit. But a psychopath of the more cunning variety will take you out to dinner and the opera before revealing his or her true motive and subsequently stabbing, strangling, bludgeoning, or carving you to death... and the funny thing is that you won’t even know what hit you. This rarer breed of maniac is all the more terrifying because there are often precious few warning signs... if any. They've learned to assimilate with modern society and blend into a crowd, or at the very least, avoid standing out. The following list represents some classic examples of this craftier brand of crazy. [Note: Big-time spoilers ahead] Norman Bates (Psycho, 1960) Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is such a nice boy. Horror as a genre is full of easy targets, which makes it probably the most lampooned genre there is. You have your Scary Movies and A Haunted Houses which spoof all of the recent successes in the genre as well as everything else but then you also have films that parody, honour and do something fresh with the genre.
Considering how common and repetitive the tropes of the genre are, it’s surprising that films such as Scream and The Cabin in the Woods don’t occur more often. There are sixteen years between these two films and in between these successes in revitalising the genre in a clever and self-reflective way, we have just gotten more and more slasher and haunted house flicks that simply just imitate them but on a purely surface level. Look at all the un-ironic stalk and slash films that came out in the wake...

Sequels... how we love them. Not sure why we love them because except for a few rare exceptions, they are normally tremendous letdowns, but we love them nonetheless. There's just something about seeing that next chapter in our favorite stories that's so damn alluring.
Sequels are great for several reasons. Aside from the fact that we get another look at characters we fell in love with, sequels also keep the story arc going (sometimes good, sometimes bad), and sequels usually make a shit-ton of money... and it's always nice to see a horror film at number one at the box office.
Sometimes sequels put a bad taste in our mouths (Blair Witch 2), but other times they deliver big time (Evil Dead 2). Some are still promising us sequels (Wolf Creek) while a few gave us sequels that barely seemed to be part of the original film (Queen of the Damned). Regardless,...

With guys like Fred Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface dominating the cinematic slaughter scene (the new Texas Chainsaw killed the competition this weekend), it’s easy for horror fans to forget about the little people. But, we at FEARnet embrace the little people and think that they deserve their moment in the spotlight just as much as the big guns. So, we have put together a list of underrated psychopaths in horror cinema who we would like to thank for their thoughtful contributions to the horror genre.
The Dentist
Corbin Bernsen does crazy quite well. His performance as a psychotic dentist who wants to rid the world of filth is what makes The Dentist as enjoyable as it is. The film itself is just Ok, but Bernsen's performance is great. Watch out for Mark Ruffalo in one of his first feature film roles. The Dentist 2 goes a little off the rails.

“That boy is about to seek revenge over the town that murdered him. He knows this, he says, because he himself is the heir apparent to that throne of terror so long held by the likes of Voorhees, Myers and Krueger. This man’s name is Leslie Vernon.”
A small-town serial killer with a curious penchant for self-promotion unleashes a blood-soaked frenzy of terror in his violent effort to become the best-known slasher in horror history in Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, an acclaimed horror film that bypassed St. Louis theaters upon its initial release in 2006. Tomorrow night (Wednesday May 16th), St. Louis-area horror fans will get the chance to see it in all its big-screen grandeur when the guys at Destroy the Brain.com present a 9:30pm screening at The Ronnie’s 20 Cinema (5320 S. In 2006 Scott Glosserman turned the slasher genre sideways with his mockumentary Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which depicted all the slashers from the 70's and 80's as not only real but just regular guys like you and me, struggling to work and get by in the world.
The titular character, brought to life brilliantly by Nathan Baesel, won over fans and audiences throughout its festival run and subsequent home release courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment and managed to breathe new life into the long stagnant slasher subgenre as well.
Five years after Behind the Mask, co-writer and director Glosserman and his cast were on hand for Los Angeles' Weekend of Horrors 2011 and officially announced their plans for the long-awaited sequel and said that for the second installment the filmmakers would be reaching out to the very community that made Leslie Vernon into one of the very few...

Ever since a sequel was announced during the Weekend of Horrors panel this writer had the privilege of hosting alongside the crew from Scott Glosserman's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon a few months back, we here at Dread Central have been giddy over the promise of more exploits from one of the newest iconic villains of the horror genre and seeing what happens next with those who have the misfortune of being mixed up in Leslie's twisted little world.
We recently caught up with the madman behind the mask (pun intended), Nathan Baesel, to talk about the fan-fueled and fan-funded project, the similarities between himself and Leslie Vernon and a tease of what fans can expect from the next chapter in this growing franchise.

If Rock and Shock 2011 doesn't get here soon Glenn Ciano is going to burst. Why is that, you ask? Because Glenn makes his feature film directorial debut with Inkubus, and the film will be having its world premiere this Saturday night at Rock and Shock 2011 in Worchester, Ma and he can't wait to unleash Inkubus on the unsuspecting world.
Headlining a film schedule that includes Chillerama at 5pm and I Am Nancy (introduced by Nancy herself, Heather Langenkamp) at 7pm Inkubus is slotted at the prime 9pm position and will be introduced by director Glenn Ciano and producer Chad A. Verdi.
"Inkubus is a hardcore old-school horror flick," Ciano said. "We want to get out there and deliver a movie to fans we feel they've been waiting 25 years for." And, following their Fans First philosophy (check out the logo for the concept below), The Lab (as Ciano's team calls themselves...

Yep, the time is coming when the world will realize the importance of this series. As you know, I’m a huge fan of Behind the Mask, so this is boner-news for me. I hope you will all join me in my phallic excitement. The $15,000 mark for the funding of the sequel has helped Scott and company get the much needed support for their project. Just read the press release below.

In 2006 director Scott Glosserman took the horror world by storm with his debut feature, Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon. A hyper-literate deconstruction of 80s slasher films that also managed the difficult feat of being one damn fine slasher film at the same time, Behind The Mask introduced an iconic killer in Leslie Vernon (played by Nathan Baesel) and became a huge favorite on the festival circuit. Glosserman has not followed a typical road since Behind The Mask - he co-directed a documentary about Wikipedia, had a big studio project derailed by the writer's strike and just premiered a made for TV movie on MTV - but Leslie Vernon has never been far from his mind in the years since. And now...

With the Creation La Weekend of Horrors in its second day, some Really interesting news came out of the Behind the Mask reunion panel just minutes ago, and being that we were on the scene, we've got all the latest gory details on Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon.
According to director/creator Scott Glosserman, they want to do a sequel, but it is far from a certainty. The script for it picks up right at the end of the first film. Same tone, same aesthetics. Together with Behind the Mask co-writer David J. Stieve, Glosserman has found a way to continue the story of Leslie (Nathan Baesel) and Taylor (Angela Goethals) that makes sense. They've already spoken with Robert Englund to reprise his Ahab role of Doc Halloran. The filmmakers even have locations waiting, and most of the cast is in place and nailed down, but there no financiers as pf uet.

What's your favorite scary movie, a deep unfamiliar voice questions on the other end of the phone in the Scream series. What's scarier then supernatural terrors? People just like you and me that one day just snap. People are the scariest creations out there. Not restricted by sunlight or a full moon or to haunt a home single home. People have free will. Human beings can go anywhere and do just about anything. To me there is nothing scarier than that. Horror movie villains are not all monsters, demons, and ghosts. In fact some of the most menacing villains in cinematic history have been realistic completely plausible human villains such as Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs", the masked killers from "The Strangers", and Peter and Paul from "Funny Games".
My favorite human villain is Leslie Vernon (Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon). Sure this film...

IMDb, as well as Leslie Vernon's official Facebook page (yes, he has one) have announced the long-awaited sequel to 2006's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, currently titled B4TM. No news on what it stands for. I had originally thought "Before the Mask", but the IMDb shows the cast including Angela Goethals and Ben Pace reprising their roles as Taylor and Doug, which makes a prequel somewhat unlikely in my opinion. Scott Glosserman returns as director and co-writer, with David J. Stieve writing the screenplay. Nathan Baesel will be returning as Vernon and genre fav Robert Englund will continue as Vernon's "Ahab", Doc Halloran.

My favorite news of the day. According Dread Central, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is getting a sequel. It seems the original writers are polishing up the new script and hope to begin filming next year.
Now if you haven’t seen Behind the Mask, go see it. Now. If you are fan of slasher films you are doing yourself a disservice by not owning this movie. It is one of my personal favorites from the last couple of years and is a true homage to the genre.
But for a synopsis of what you’re missing.
You know legendary maniacs Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. Now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho-slasher. Nathan Baesel of Invasion stars as Vernon, a good-natured killing machine who invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor (Scott Wilson of In...

A few year's back, this Shock writer was doing a set report on behalf of Fangoria magazine for Bereavement , the prequel to filmmaker Stevan Mena's Malevolence and of all the things I witnessed on that visit, what impressed me the most was watching actor Brett Rickaby at work. Despite not knowing him beforehand, he's got that immediate familiarity where you know you sort of recognize him, but can't exactly place where from. (It's most likely from one of the dozen's of television appearances he's made over the years.) As soon as Mena called out "Action!", Brett immediately embodied the character of Graham Sutter, channeling what Anthony Perkins did best with Norman Bates or more recently Nathan Baesel as Leslie Vernon in Behind The Mask . If those few scenes were any...

I don’t know how many other "Invasion" fans are out there, but I remember exactly how I felt after I watched what would end up being the series finale of the short-lived ABC show. It was as if someone had hit me upside the head with an aluminum bat and then did the Macarena on my skull.
Starring Eddie Cibrian, William Fichtner, Nathan Baesel, Tyler Labine, Kari Matchett, and Alexis Dziena, the sci-fi serial centered around a hurricane that hits the Florida Everglades, masking the arrival of an alien hybrid bent on invading the human population and taking humanity to the next evolutionary level. The show debuted in the fall of 2005 with the ever-solid "Lost" as its lead in.

After the 80's passed it seemed that - for the most part - the slasher craze had finally come to a rest. Successful franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th had been siphoned beyond emptiness and any intrigue the sub genre once offered appeared dead and buried. Then 1996 rolled around and Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell reminded us that good directing, storytelling, and acting is alive and well with the surprise hit Scream.
The next couple of years provided a massive batch of 'fresh' copycats and a handful of Scream sequels. Very few of any are remotely near noteworthy (quick nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer in order to avoid the onslaught of negative commentary from the obsessed Sarah Michelle Gellar fans out there J ), though Scream 2 remains a memorable franchise installment based solely on the unexpected axing of series favorite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) Meeks.

Don’t know about other folks, but I Loved the 2006 horror spoof, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (spoof isn’t the best word choice, but a movie like Btm really is unclassifiable). Now there is word that our favorite homicidal maniac may be returning so Dread Central checked up with Leslie’s alter-ego to see if he might offer some information.
From actor Nathan Baesel himself, word is -- "We've been talking for about a year, and Scott [Glosserman] and David [Stieve] have fleshed out a pretty workable frame. Scott called about a month ago cracking himself up while relating the newest machinations he and Stieve had come up with. 20 Years After may not be terribly compelling or even have that memorable a story but it's certainly watchable - which is more than you'd guess from the ridiculously unfair rating of 2.5 that's currently on the film's IMDb page. In fact, after seeing how some viewers have been responding to the film, the overall theme of this review went from me wanting to harp on some of the stranger aspects of the screenplay to me wanting to defend a few of the movie's saving graces (though I may have to point out some foibles along the way). This review was written for the theatrical release of "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon."
Anchor Bay Entertainment
Horror spoofs and mockumentaries are two genres that have not exactly been underexploited lately, and "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" combines them to less than cumulative effect. This satirical portrait of a would-be serial killer training for his upcoming murder spree while being trailed by a documentary film crew offers a few knowing laughs, but even the humorous presence of such icons of the genre as Robert Englund ("A Nightmare on Elm Street") and Zelda Rubinstein ("Poltergeist") is unable to make this effort directed and co-written by Scott Glosserman of interest to anyone beyond hard-core horror buffs.
The reasonably clever concept has the title character (Nathan Baesel) attempting to follow in the footsteps of his idols Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, etc., through stringent planning and preparation. Followed by an intrepid young filmmaker (Angela Goethals) and her cameramen, Leslie wanders through the idyllic small town where he lives, scoping out beautiful virgins and other classic victim types for future killing.
It's apparently no easy matter being a slasher killer, we find out as Leslie elaborates on his training techniques, including extensive cardio -- he has to appear to be calmly walking while his victims are running -- and yoga exercises, so that he can more realistically appear to be dead.
Also, no small amount of legwork is involved, such as finding exactly the right remote locations and laying out elaborate booby traps for his unwitting victims.
Most of this is fairly predictable spoofing, and Englund is wasted as a psycho-hunting shrink clearly modeled after Donald Pleasence's character in "Halloween". But there are moments when the proceedings are unsettling and original, such as the emotional reunion between Leslie and his retired serial killer mentor (a creepily underplaying Scott Wilson), who nostalgically reminisces about the old days.
Least effective is the lengthy and pedestrian climactic killing spree, in which the film descends to the level of the cliched enterprises it is seeking to satirize.
