It’s with great pleasure that I announce the launch of an amazing crowdfunding campaign to help with the completion of the tour documentary Thor: Return Of The Thunderhawk. In 2015, director Ryan Wise gave us the documentary I Am Thor, an unflinching account of Jon-Mikl Thor’s comeback after having been in retirement for nearly ten years. Mounting such an ambitious attempt at stardom after having given up wasn’t an easy task. Cameras followed him and his band for nearly fifteen years and some major life-changing events occur within the context of the film. After a successful launch at Slamdance, the film continued to garner critical acclaim and has played all over the world. The film is currently available on DVD/Blu-Ray from Dark Sky Films and...

Nothing fits the music documentary format quite so compellingly as a life cut tragically short. In addition to the ready-made dramatic arc, a subject who leaves this mortal coil before their time usually also leaves a certain amount of mystery in their wake, providing ample grist for filmmakers (and the folks they interview) to chew on.
Even when the hows and whys of an artist's tragic exit are a matter of uncontroversial record, questions of "What might have been?" inevitably linger over their prematurely truncated discography — in itself a far...

I Am Thor
Directed by Ryan Wise
USA, 2015
I Am Thor is one of those fascinating documentaries that makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time. The jovial star of the show, aging rocker Jon Mikl Thor, is a gentle soul who bears all (literally) for director Ryan Wise. On the other hand, it’s always sad when someone doesn’t realize they’ve crashed into their talent ceiling. But who are we to judge? Thor’s dogged determination is an inspiration to anyone with a dream, and he’s one of the most engaging personalities we’ve seen all year.
There is a moment late in I Am Thor when Jon Mikl Thor admits he will someday have to “stop coming back and say, ‘Hey, I’m here!’” That this realization arrives 10 years into said comeback is just one small part of what makes Thor so endearing.

While the name Thor has, in recent years, become most closely associated with the Marvel superhero played by Chris Hemsworth over multiple films in the past five years, fans of metal music also associate the name with Canadian heavy metal singer Jon-Mikl Thor, who was the frontman for the band Thor throughout the 70s and 80s. Thor’s exploits, which also include bodybuilding and acting, were recently chronicled in documentarian Ryan Wise’s new film I Am Thor.
Now, ahead of the film’s theatrical and VOD release, Thor will now be attending advance screenings of the documentary, and will perform after every screening. Thor’s attendance at screenings will begin on November 10th at Seattle’s El Corazon, before moving to Portland’s Dante’s on November 11th and Los Angeles’ Whiskey A Go-Go on November 12th. After 23 unbelievable, uninterrupted days of screenings, today marks the Closing Night of the 19th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. There is always a sadness lingering in the air on the last day. I often compare it to the feeling you get as a kid on the final day of summer camp. You get to spend an entire month with a group of friends from around the world knowing you might not have the opportunity to see some of these people again for an entire year. Known worldwide as North America’s longest-running genre film festival, Fantasia is special because of the people who not only make it happen but also for those of us who choose to spend the beautiful hot summer days crowded inside a gloomy theatre to watch movies we might not have the chance to see otherwise. And for the sixth consecutive year, the event succeeded...

I Am Thor
Directed by Ryan Wise
2015, USA / Canada /Finland / Sweden
Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression, and machismo but even by Heavy metal standards, the artist known as Thor (a.k.a. Jon Miki Thor) is an absolute beast!
The Norse god impersonator, semi-professional bodybuilder, performance artist, b-movie actor, and all-around nice guy is the subject of I Am Thor, an 84 minute documentary by director Ryan Wise which shines some insight into Thor’s wild life and documents his long-running come back. With a music career spanning five decades, Thor is one of the legends of rock-n-roll that not enough people know exists —and hopefully this film will change that. 15 years in the making and I Am Thor is finally here, and totally worth the wait.

Mpi Media Group has acquired all distribution rights to I Am Thor. It’s not about the hammer-swinging superhero, but rather a biographical film about Jon Mikl Thor, an unsung hero of the golden age of heavy metal, and his attempt at a comeback. The film, directed by Ryan Wise (Prom Queen), will receive a late fall theatrical release. Mpi Media Group Executive Vice President Greg Newman made the deal with Glen Reynolds, the President and CEO of Circus Road Films. Thor was…...

He was a bodybuilder, a naked waiter, and a Las Vegas showman before he became a rock star. Above all else, though, Jon Mikl Thor has always been a modest, 'never say die' entertainer, as made apparent in I Am Thor, a very funny and enlightening documentary by Ryan Wise. Born in 1953, Thor (apparently his true family name) appears to have been an affable kid who got accustomed to being bullied as a youngster. That didn't discourage him from forming his own band, though it may have contributed to his decision to become a bodybuilder. He drifted from job to job, but unlike most young people, his gigs were rather more memorable and unique, such as a stint as a naked waiter -- cut...

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.

Festival top brass announced the 19 films that will screen at the Slamdance Film Festival, set to run in Park City, Utah, from January 23-29.
The 11 narrative and eight documentary selections include 13 world premieres. All competition films are feature directorial debuts budgeted below $1m without Us distribution.
“It’s very exciting to bring this dynamic lineup to audiences in Park City,” said festival director Anna Germanidi. “We are proud to help launch these filmmakers’ careers and celebrate the success we all believe these films deserve.”
“Our success in showcasing emerging artists is most obviously linked with American talent, but increasingly at Slamdance, we want to also support new international talent,” said co-founder and president Peter Baxter.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:
