Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 2005...
It's underappreciated films time again, and this week, we delve deep into the year 2005 - a collection of months dominated by the likes of Star Wars: Episode III, another Harry Potter, Steven Spielberg's War Of The Worlds, Peter Jackson's King Kong, and CG family movie Madagascar.
It was also the year Pierce Brosnan formally bowed out of his role as James Bond, and Martin Scorsese's The Aviator was hyped to win the director his first Oscar, but didn't. Still, the contents of this list received nothing like the acclaim of The Aviator, nor the financial pickings of a Star Wars or Harry Potter. As ever, we've focused on 25 films which we think deserve a bit more love.

Kids dispensing advice beyond their years had never bothered me before. In fact, I was kind of drawn to it. I loved Natalie Portman’s Lou Reed-quoting Marty in Beautiful Girls and Virginia Weilder’s conniving Dinah Lord in The Philadelphia Story. And then came Chloe Moretz’s fast-talking, bike-riding 40-year-old in soccer cleats and an 11-year-old’s body, and my world crumbled.
It was too dumb to bear. Just to seal the deal, in 2011, Crazy, Stupid, Love. introduced us to a crazy, stupid romantic with a crush on his babysitter, and I...

Chicago – “Disconnect” is a punch in the gut, the backlash of our current technology, and a film that could have happened yesterday. It is a trenchant cautionary tale, warning us about the excesses of every blinking screen and “smart” device that supposedly is making our lives easier, but can just as easily become instruments of destructive. It is about how we live now.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Three intertwining stories about cyber-attacks and online consequences are passionately written and acted. Jason Bateman, for example, takes a break from his smarmy guy character to portray a distant father that learns a harsh lesson about that distance, and creates an empathy that displays surprising dramatic chops. When living within our cyber-selves, the theme of the film becomes about the “disconnect” that is created, in conflict with our real selves. It asks the questions about who we are when hidden behind the digital screens, and what...

Title: Disconnect Directed By: Henry Alex Rubin Starring: Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, Frank Grillo, Michael Nyqvist, Paula Patton, Andrea Riseborough, Alexander Skarsgård, Max Thieriot, Colin Ford, Jonah Bobo, Haley Ramm, Aviad Bernstein With a handful of weighty storylines, “Disconnect” can be a lot to digest, but thanks to impeccable transitions, well-calculated story overlap, and a congealing tone, the film doesn’t feel like a sampling of stories, rather a look inside a well-developed world. “Disconnect” highlights three scenarios, all with connectivity at the core. Kyle (Max Thieriot) is an 18-year-old kid making money by performing on an adult-only website. When journalist Nina Dunham (Andrea Riseborough) stumbles upon his page, she sees [ Read More ]

It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Disconnect. Oh yeah, we're becoming a bunch of online zombies. Cell phones are ruining the world. Our identities will be stolen on the Internet. Sex chat rooms, blah, blah, blah... I hear yah! In one ear, out the other. You're not telling me anything I don't already know... Now, where do I input my social security number and you're telling me you need my credit card number and security code to finalize this purchase? Well, here yah go! Yes, identities are stolen over the Internet. Yes, porn and sex cams exist. Yes, people are taken advantage of and school kids can be cruel. All of this is true... So why would a film about it make us roll our eyes? The reason I was a skeptic walking into Disconnect wasn't necessarily the subject matter, but the fact it looked like Crash with cellphones.

Identity theft! Cyber bullying! Runaway teens doing lurid cam shows! This ambitious, multi-storied, state-of-us-all ensemble drama plumbs our fears of the plugged-in now more stridently than local news in TV sweeps. While well-crafted and at times moving, screenwriter Andrew Stern's cautionary tales can't help but feel behind the curve, the news they're so urgently sharing already fully absorbed by the culture. They still build some power, especially the central story of a misfit teen (Jonah Bobo) getting catfished by a couple of bullies—and then the inevitable shame of a 15-year-old's nude pix getting shared all over his high school. With tenderness and economy, Stern and director Henry-Alex Rubin humanize all parties, especially the bullies and the father of the poor, pranked k...

We unplug our phone from the charger, pop in our ear buds and go out to seize the day. We text compulsively, post on Facebook obsessively, and when it comes time to shop, date or hook-up, we log on, boot up and tune out.
That's the world we're living in and the dilemma skewered in "Disconnect," a "Crash"-style polemic told through a series of interwoven stories about teens, couples and families strained by the lack of communication in this Golden Age of Information.
It's a blunt instrument of a movie, and often melodramatic. But it sometimes moves and often hits its target square on the nose.
Paula Patton and Alexander Skarsgard play a broken couple, struggling with finances and grief. They lost a baby. She's seeking solace in online chat rooms, maybe more than solace.
Then, their identities are stolen and they tumble into the humiliation of full disclosure...

The narrative feature debut of Murderball director Henry-Alex Rubin, Disconnect opens in a limited release this Friday and paints an eerie portrait of a modern world wherein the very technology designed to keep us in touch threatens to tear individual lives apart. Starring Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, Frank Grillo, Michael Nyqvist, Paula Patton, Andrea Riseborough, Alexander Skarsgard, Max Thieriot, Colin Ford, Jonah Bobo and Haley Ramm, Disconnect offers interweaving stories that all tie to the same theme: A hard-working lawyer, attached to his cell phone, can't find the time to communicate with his family. A couple is drawn into a dangerous situation when their secrets are exposed online. A widowed ex-cop struggles to raise a mischievous son who cyber-bullies a classmate....

Los Angeles -- It's a given at multiplexes these days that despite switch-off-your-cell-phone announcements and the occasional grumbling protest, whatever's onscreen will have to compete with tiny pockets of light from audience members unable to stay off their handhelds. Watching those glow patches come and go during "Disconnect" reinforces the film's position on how desensitized we've become to these technological intrusions. Not that Henry-Alex Rubin's schematic multi-strand drama is at all shy about articulating its themes.
Directing his first narrative feature, documentary-maker Rubin ("Murderball") has assembled a solid cast and weaves together the three interconnected stories of Andrew Stern's original screenplay with elegance and efficiency. But this is a film that voices its warning about the hazards of a wired existence with solemn self-importance. It's also quite late in the day to be pointing out that we're so plugged into our devices we often fail to see or...

We've bid farewell to the Great White North for another year — yup, the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival is officially over. In years past, Oscar winners like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The King's Speech" made their international debuts at Tiff. With that in mind, we took in every screening our schedules allowed, looking for the Next Big Thing of this year.
We narrowed the Best of Fest list to 15; They may not be the Oscar nominees of 2013 — though we'd bet cash money some of them are — but they'll be among the best movies you'll see for yourself this year.

Brandon Cronenberg's name looks familiar for a reason; he's the son of "Cosmopolis" director David Cronenberg. And while the imagery in his first feature-length film evokes memories of his dad's work — there are echoes of "Videodrome" and "Naked Lunch" in "Antiviral" — the younger Cronenberg has created something unarguably unique.

Ryan Gosling seems to have made a career out of making very clever choices. Half-Nelson, Drive, Blue Valentine, even The Notebook – all were critically or commercially successful, and all added to his status as one of the hottest properties currently working in Hollywood. The decision to take on the role of Jacob, a beautifully cool, effortlessly suave womaniser opposite Steve Carell’s hopeless, separated Mr Nobody, Cal looked like the first really safe commercial decision. After all a comedy, opposite Carell, in a hugely generous role that allowed him to play the impervious anti-hero type without any real comedy responsibility could lead to no real problems unless the film failed.
And thankfully, Crazy, Stupid, Love doesn’t fail to deliver on any count. It is a chemistry-driven comedy with some major laughs and two central performances from Gosling and Carell that are equally irresistible,...

This insightful comedy about the hopelessness of love is every inch a ‘fashion film’, both in terms of narrative and thanks to costume designer Dayna Pink’s enviable parade of menswear trends and elegant suiting.
Crazy, Stupid, Love (directed by Glenn Ficara and John Requa) stars Steve Carell as Cal Weaver, a middle aged man who has forgotten how to be a man and Ryan Gosling as Jacob Palmer, a bar culture player who helps Cal regain his self respect. Clothes in the film are prioritised over the man. They denote what we wear reflects how we evolve. Or in the case of Cal during the very first scene, how we devolve and are generally the last to notice. As the opening cuts from one couple playing footsie to another,...

We got the chance to check out Crazy, Stupid, Love (courtesy of WB) on blu-ray, and marveled at the ability of the filmmakers to create a smart and witty, comedy that breaks through the pitfalls of it’s genre to stand among one of the better films 2011 has to offer.
The Basics
Here’s the official Synopsis:
At forty-something, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream--good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life quickly unravels. Worse, in today's single world, Cal, who hasn't dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth. Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protege to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling...

Crazy Stupid Love Blu-ray Warner Home Entertainment 2011/Rated PG-13 /Running Time 118 Mins List Price: $35.99 – Available November 1, 2011 Crazy Stupid Love is one of those romantic comedies that sneaks up on you delivering surprise after surprise and the method in which the film pulls them off is rather welcome. Steve Carell's had very few film that have enabled him to demonstrate his ability to juggle comedy with drama, playing characters in painful and very human situations, with the right injections of humor. It should come as no surprise that after the disaster that was Date Night, he's found something right up his alley, especially since he serves as one of the film's producers. Carrell is bumbling boring dad Cal, whose wife Emily (Julianne Moore) suddenly reveals an extramarital affair and wants a divorce. Faced to come to terms with his new single life, Cal's un-smoothness brings the comedy straight to life,...

Chicago – Glenn Ficarra & John Requa do strong directorial work yet and the script by Dan Fogelman is strong but “Crazy, Stupid, Love” works primarily due to the sheer, incredible talent of its amazing cast. With a stellar mix of Oscar-nominated veterans, two of the most engaging actors of their generation, and even a few talented newcomers, this is easily one of the best ensembles of the year. They were attracted by a film that treats love like the silly, goofy, wacky, crazy, stupid thing it needs to be. Sure, it’s broad and a bit cliched, but so is its subject matter.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
The ensemble is led by Steve Carell, giving his best performance since “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” as Cal Weaver. The film opens with his wife Emily (the radiant Julianne Moore) asking for a divorce and eventually revealing that she’s been sleeping with a smarmy co-worker (Kevin Bacon...

The first thing to remember about Crazy Stupid Love is not to classify it as a romcom. Yes, the plot is centred on romantic relationships, but its comedy far outweighs the romcom elements.
The casting of Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Kevin Bacon in one film is faultless, and the film is almost equally so. With the release date the end of September, and because Steve Carell gets equal, if not more, screen time than the nearly photoshopped perfection of Ryan Gosling and his abs, means that it hopefully won’t restrict its audience to couples of groups of girls and will actually remind people that a romcom means romantic comedy, and doesn’t always equate to chick flick.

Chicago – As far as kiddie tearjerkers go, “The Fox and the Hound” is one of Disney’s finest. It’s not a great film, and certainly not in the same league as the watershed game-changers that came before or the renaissance masterworks that followed. But it is a tender and bittersweet fable with a message of refreshing complexity. At its heart is a friendship that society has deemed unsustainable, and the film doesn’t shy away from its troubling repercussions.
Based on the novel by Daniel Mannix, this 1981 effort functioned as a crucial turning point in the history of Disney studios, when veteran animators like Wolfgang Reitherman were replaced by a slate of new talent including Ron Clements and John Musker (future co-directors of “The Little Mermaid”). Creative differences intensified between the old guard and the rookies, many of whom found the project to be distressingly bland. This caused the...

There is one scene in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s “Crazy, Stupid, Love” (Warner Brothers, 7/29, PG-13, trailer) that pays off so well that it had the entire audience with which I saw it last night laughing out loud for a good 30 seconds. I won’t spoil it for those of you haven’t yet seen the film by describing it in any detail, but suffice it to say that a character’s identity is revealed, blind-siding other characters and the audience, and chaos ensues in a manner that would make the Marx brothers proud.
Unfortunately, the rest of the movie is fairly mediocre, more of less what “Valentine’s Day” (2010) was and its sequel “New Year’s Eve” (Warner Brothers, 12/9, PG-13, trailer) — the trailer of which preceded “Crazy” — inevitably will be. Everyone appears to be giving it their all, and Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling have their moments, but Julianne Moore,...

Crushes and snubs. Dates and no-shows. Relationships and break-ups. Marriages and divorces. At one point or another, we have all felt the euphoric highs and soul-crushing lows of love, the only emotion capable of evoking irrationality and indescribable bliss, sometimes simultaneously.
This pursuit of happiness is at the heart of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Crazy, Stupid, Love., a cute and complex romantic comedy for adults who aren’t interested in the umpteenth formulaic quest for Mr. Right.
Steve Carell, ever the master of subtle comedy and sweet, well-intended schlubs, hilariously plays another named Cal, a complacent father who, in the opening scene, learns he’s getting a divorce from his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore). Upon learning the split is a result of a tryst with her co-worker, David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon), Cal’s idea of coping is to bail out of a moving car and roll to a pathetic heap in the road.

Everything that is associated with -- and what many people dislike about -- romantic comedies is front and center in Crazy, Stupid Love: Big, schmaltzy romantic gestures; zany misunderstandings; ridiculous makeovers (with the obligatory montage); preposterous leaps of logic; lack of context for the character's actions; the pour-your-heart-out public speech (at a graduation, no less) and one dumb plot contrivance after another. Under different circumstances with different talent attached, Crazy, Stupid, Love might've been no different than any of Ashton Kutcher/Katherine Heigl style romantic comedy to roll out the Hollywood factory every year.
And yet it's not. If you can temper your groans -- and the movie is good enough that it's not hard to do so -- Crazy, Stupid, Love is a sweet, low-key love story, the absolute best movie you could hope for given the circumstances. Steve Carell is likable and lovely, Ryan Goslin is douchebag-charming, Emma Stone is sweet and endearing,...

On set and preparing for her first starring role in a major motion picture, getting ready for scenes with stars like Steve Carell and Julianne Moore, you can understand why Analeigh Tipton would be a little bit anxious. Luckily, that's exactly what her directors wanted.
"She's a nervous person in general," Tipton says of her character in "Crazy, Stupid, Love.," the star-studded ensemble romantic comedy out Friday, "and it was a great excuse to be nervous without anybody noticing. Like, 'Yeah no, I'm acting, I'm being a really good actress, I'm super nervous!'"
Tipton, a 22-year old model/actress and relative newcomer, plays Jessica in the film, a 17-year old babysitter for the children of Julianne Moore and Steve Carell, on whose character, Cal, she develops an adorably fumbling secret crush. As a serious student of the art of acting and a newcomer in a cast that also includes Ryan Gosling,...

Crazy Stupid Love is one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in a long time with the added bonus of Ryan Gosling shirtless! Need I say more?
I don’t know if I can truly express my love for this movie in five reasons, but I am going to give it my best shot!
You will leave the theater with a six pack from laughing so hard! The humor is so witty and constant throughout that it really does carry the story. Steve Carell uses his typical dry behavior, combining it with his clueless attitude from The Office to make the perfect middle aged man going through a serious mid-life crises. If you are a hopeless romantic like me than this is the movie for you, because this story is All about love! The young son loves his babysitter. The babysitter loves the boy’s father (Steve). Emma Stone loves her lame boyfriend,...

Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Directed by: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Cast: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon
Running Time: 1 hr 58 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: July 29, 2011
Plot: Emily (Moore) tells Cal (Carell) she wants a divorce. Now Cal must figure out how to move on, and a ladies man (Gosling) helps by taking him under his wing.
Who’S It For? This one is a pretty big crowd pleaser. It clearly focuses on the laughs that can come from love and heartache.
Expectations: It’s a great cast with one name sticking out. Gosling’s biggest grossing film is The Notebook. Otherwise, he’s pretty much Mr. Independent. He’s the darkhorse here.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Steve Carell as Cal: He’s my new likeable every man. Tom Hanks, for the moment, you’ve been replaced. Cal doesn’t know what to do or how to do it.

The title says it all. Crazy, Stupid, Love follows the story of a group of people falling in love in all the wrong ways - with the wrong people, at the wrong times, for the wrong reasons. Yet it all comes together to create something so right!
The story starts out with Cal Weaver (played by the always lovable Steve Carell) finding out is marriage is ending. His wife (Julianne Moore) wants a divorce because she has been seeing someone else (Kevin Bacon). Cal is thrown completely off-balance by this announcement, yet lets his wife leave.
He decides to jump into singledom with a vengeance. And that's when we meet Jacob (Ryan Gosling), who decided to take Cal under his wing and show him the ways of the single world.
Meanwhile Cal's son is having a love crisis of his own. He's in love with his babysitter Jessica (Analeigh Tipton...

Crazy, Stupid, Love Directed by: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa Written by: Dan Fogelman Starring: Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, and Jonah Bobo Crazy, Stupid, Love is a nice romantic comedy that boasts a wonderful ensemble cast. It has been heaped with almost universal praise by critics, but I found myself falling in “like” rather than “love” with the film. I’ll concede that it was a strong case of like, but something was missing; this film never soared above most of the films in the genre. There are two distinct storylines that converge in the film. Cal (Steve Carell) has been shell-shocked by his recent separation from wife Emily (Julianne Moore) and spends his nights drinking away his sorrows at a local bar, spilling his sob story to anyone within earshot. Bedecked in frumpy clothes and tennis shoes, he sticks out like a sore thumb in the swanky pick-up joint.

Chicago – “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” is undeniably clichéd, broad in its humor, and a bit manipulative in its sentimentality, but it should be. This is a movie about grand statements, soulmates, and true passion, a film that unabashedly believes in the craziness and the stupidity of what we call love. It’s also one of the most purely entertaining films of the year.
