He was a former son-in-law of Barry Goldwater. At a parade, Goldwater couldn't find his son, Barry Goldwater Jr., to join him. Holt was picked as a stand-in by Goldwater, and the two cruised down the parade route together.
He was a Jackson County Commissioner for 12 years before leaving office in 2002.
He had five children: Richard Arlen, Darin, John David, Sean, and Shannon.
Due to diabetes, the gangrene set in and his leg was amputated below the knee.
He died of complications from diabetes.
Later in life, he acted in a few television commercials.
