Geeta Malik’s semi-autobiographical send-up of a snooty New Jersey community has interesting, awkward things to say about class
A young Indian American woman Alia (Sophia Ali) rolls her eyes at her mother’s generation in the affluent New Jersey community where she grew up. The aunties, she jokes, are a bunch of “sari-wearing zombies”, only interested in shopping and gossiping about who’s getting married and who’s getting fat. Alia’s assessment of her mum – and her own privilege – are the subject of this extremely likable mother-daughter comedy with a smart script from Geeta Malik, who has said in interviews her affectionate send-up is semi-autobiographical.
Alia is back home for the summer holidays planning to chill. Her dad Ranjit (Adil Hussain) is a successful doctor; her mum Sheila (Manisha Koirala) is devoted to keeping up appearances. All the families in their world take it in turns to throw fancy parties,...

“Uncharted” fans were more than a little delighted when the original Nathan Drake showed up on screen toward the end of the film. And yes, Nolan North loved it just as much, but it was definitely a long road to making it happen.
Based on the PlayStation video games from Naughty Dog, “Uncharted” has been in development for years, going through a handful of possible stars, and more than a few directors. But North was in touch with most of them.
“I had met with a couple of the past directors over time, and everybody always wanted to kind of have have me in there somewhere,” North told TheWrap. Both he and the directors were fully aware how much the fans wanted to see him.

“Uncharted” is based on the popular video game series published by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation family of consoles. It stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan, adventurers on a quest for a very big score. And it’s the kind of giant Hollywood production that is so full of twists and turns that the thrills don’t stop when the movie is over, but rather spill over into the closing credits.
That’s right – X might mark the spot, but it certainly isn’t the end of the journey.
TheWrap got to chat with “Uncharted” director Ruben Fleischer and during the conversation brought up the pair of post-credits sequences, including casting insights, scrapped ideas, and additional details.
Major spoiler warning. If you haven’t seen “Uncharted,” turn back now.

It's game over for The Wilds.
Deadline reports that Prime Video has canceled the buzzy drama after two seasons.
The series burst onto the screen in 2020, landing a speedy renewal and rave reviews.
As the first YA series on the streaming service, it broke through in a way many shows that followed it did not.
However, the second season premiered in May, failing to reach its predecessor's success.
Season 2 of The Wilds continued to follow the harrowing ordeal of a group of teenage girls stranded on a deserted island, and they didn't end up there by accident - they've secretly been recruited into an elaborate social experiment.
The season ratchets up the drama by revealing that the girls aren't the only ones being studied... there's a new set of subjects, an island of teenage boys, who must also fight for survival under the watchful eye of the experiment's puppet master.

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg do some modern-day swashbuckling in this action adventure movie based on the popular treasure hunter video game series Uncharted. Pacily directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom), it’s an entirely watchable popcorn movie that gets the main components right but doesn’t quite achieve its full potential.
Holland plays Nate Drake, a petty thief who uses his job as a flashy cocktail-making bartender to practise his pickpocketing skills. Landing the leading role in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever has changed Maitreyi Ramakrishnan‘s life forever and in turn, that of other South Asian teens who never felt represented on screen.
And although the fourth season of the coming-of-age dramedy will also be the show’s last, Ramakrishnan isn’t dwelling on that. She is celebrating the accomplishments of her community and how the series is helping to break down doors in Hollywood—and hopefully, opening up the path for other shows like it to be greenlit in its wake.
“This show changed my life in every way. I was just a regular 17-year-old high school girl, living her best life and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Now I can say I was a part of something that’s groundbreaking, and history-changing. It’s been such an honor. There are no words to express how grateful I am for everything...

To twist the words of Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent, it’s always darkest before the dawn, especially at the box office. North American theaters are having a quiet weekend led by holdover releases ahead of the big kahuna on the horizon in Warner Bros.’ “The Batman.” With the Dark Knight’s rise still a few days away, Sony’s “Uncharted” has an easy path to staying on top of domestic charts in its second weekend.
The adaptation of Sony’s series of PlayStation games is holding well, with the studio projecting a $23 million gross for its sophomore outing. That’s a 45% drop from its $44 million opening — a debut that already beat initial expectations. Big-budget spectacles and adaptations of well-known properties can tend to be front-loaded in terms of box office grosses, so a drop of less than 50% is a marked victory for “Uncharted.” Last weekend, the Tom Holland...

When he came upon the scene as “yet another Peter Parker” in 2015’s “Captain America: Civil War” few could have predicted that Tom Holland would, in just a few years, emerge as the God-Emperor of Box Office Receipts.
But the numbers, especially in our knotty time of lingering omicron concerns and the growing comfort of streaming, do not lie. The young Mr. Holland gets butts into seats, and “Uncharted,” a February release that had been in development for well over a decade with different directors and stars, did gangbusters over the holiday weekend.

“Uncharted” is looking to climb to the top of the domestic box office in its opening weekend. Ruben Fleischer’s adventure film is projected to earn $45 million over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend — a tally that would notch it as the biggest theatrical opening of 2022 so far.
Sony Pictures’ “Uncharted” earned $15.4 million on Friday from 4,275 locations, setting itself up for a No. 1 debut. The Tom Holland vehicle marks the box office’s biggest opening since the actor’s last film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which dominated the holiday season to become the third highest-grossing domestic film release in history.
After anchoring a Marvel trilogy, “Uncharted” is seen as a test of Holland’s box office appeal outside of spandex. The film marks his first starring role in a non-Marvel blockbuster, apart from last spring’s “Chaos Walking,” which sat on Lionsgate’s shelf for years and hardly made any noise...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Uncharted,” now playing in theaters.
In Sony’s “Uncharted” movie, “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland plays treasure hunter Nathan Drake from the popular PlayStation video game series; however, there would be no Drake without actor Nolan North, who voiced and performed motion capture for the video game icon for nearly 10 years.
In fact, many “Uncharted” fans wanted North himself to star in an adaptation for years, but the actor has one simple response to that.
“People think, ‘It should’ve been you.’ No, it shouldn’t. I’m 51,” North told Variety.
Fortunately for fans, North has a brief, but memorable cameo in the “Uncharted” adaptation, right after Holland’s Drake and Sophia Ali’s Chloe Frazer survive plummeting from a cargo plane thousands of feet in the air. The sequence, inspired by an action set piece in “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception,...

When actor Sophia Ali stepped into the shoes of Chloe Frazer, a fearless, badass treasure hunter in “Uncharted,” she felt unstoppable.

While undergoing daily, eight-hour strength and endurance training for the physical, stunt-heavy role, parts of Chloe stuck with Ali in real life, even in unlikely, everyday situations.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been that strong before. When I had groceries to carry, I wasn’t thinking about ‘Is this going to be heavy? Do I have to come back for two rounds?'” she joked.

For a comparison to another video game hit, “Sonic the Hedgehog” made $3 million in its previews and opened to $58 million in February 2020. For another President’s Day weekend comparison, “Alita: Battle Angel...

“Uncharted,” a long-gestating film adaptation of a popular series of video games, racked up $3.7 million in Thursday previews. The big-budget adventure is a key test of Tom Holland’s bankability, coming on the heels of his blockbuster success with “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The Marvel adventure recently topped “Avatar” to become the third highest-grossing domestic release in history. This time, Holland trades in Spidey’s spandex for treasure hunter Nathan Drake’s cream-colored V-neck and holster.
“Uncharted” has cycled through directors on its long and winding road to the big screen with the likes of David O. Russell, Shawn Levy and Neil Burger attached at various points. Ruben Fleischer, who previously oversaw “Venom,” eventually got the reins and directs an ensemble that includes Mark Wahlberg along with Sophia Ali and Antonio Banderas. “Uncharted” is expected to gross north of $30 million during the four-day Presidents Weekend holiday. That’s a respectable result in pandemic times,...

As far as films based on video games go, Uncharted may not be scraping the bottom of the barrel, nor is it the crème de la crème. It instead proves to be a moderately entertaining adventure yarn that echoes better films that have come before, and will probably follow it.
The plot follows the exploits of hustler/thief Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) after he partners with Indiana Jones wannabe Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to search for a fortune in gold lost five hundred years earlier by Ferdinand Magellan. Sully had been working with Nathan’s long-lost brother, but now needs Nathan’s help if he is going to lay claim to the treasure before another treasure seeker, Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who insists his family has the only legitimate claim to the fortune.
After Nathan and Sully team up with fellow adventure Sophia Ali (Chloe Frazer) the film begins to...

So getting those winter blues, stuck inside for days due to the weather (and lingering travel restrictions) making you a bit stir crazy? The perfect “cure” might be a virtual “vacay”, namely a globe-spanning adventure starring two actors representing the “next-gen” of action heroes. Hey, one of them is still dominating the box office (and probably playing in the auditorium next door or down the hall). But this is no mere travelogue “romp”. It’s an adaptation (and a hoped-for new franchise). Another comic book, maybe a novel, or perhaps a classic TV show? Get with it Gramps’, this is a computer game that hopes to make as big a splash as Sonic did two years ago. Rather than a CGI speedy critter, here’s the tale...
