“Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

When John Bradley met with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about their new series “3 Body Problem,” the first thing they told the “Game of Thrones” actor is that they’d written a role in the sci-fi mind-bender for him. Quite literally. “They said, ‘It’s as close to yourself as any character you’ll ever play,’” Bradley says. “It’s kind of a daunting prospect. It’s a bit like you’re going to see yourself drawn by one of those caricature artists on the street. I’m going to find out what these highly perceptive, very bright people think I am as a person.”
The character Benioff, Weiss and co-creator and co-showrunner Alexander Woo created for Bradley — Jack Rooney, part of the “Oxford Five” of college friends and scientists at the center of the series — may not, on its face, seem all that flattering. Jack is brash and blunt,...

An adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, 3 Body Problem, is an ambitious project. However, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were up to the challenge. The source material is dense enough to make for compelling television and the first season would prove to be a new hit for Netflix as the show cracked the Top 10 on the platform. The series has received generally positive reviews, but our own Alex Maidy didn’t exactly love it. “I found it very hard to engage with this story, these characters, and this series,” Maidy wrote. You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review Here.

3 Body Problem clocked another week atop Netflix’s TV charts — though it appears to have been a slow week for the streamer’s series.
The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, as well as Alexander Woo, clocked just 4.8M views in its third week at No. 1. Consider that the series tallied 11M views in its first weekend on Netflix and could only muster second place.
The series now sits just below 40M views in total since launch, which places it about halfway to the most popular list. It would need more than 83M views in its 91-day premiere window to beat out The Witcher Season 1. This is still looking relatively unlikely, since the series peaked with about 15.6M views in one week and viewership has steeply declined in the past two measurement periods.
The Gentlemen took third place again, but its viewership also declined to 3.7M views.

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

3 Body Problem spent another week atop Netflix’s TV charts.
The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss with Alexander Woo, drove another 8.3M views from April 1 to 7. That’s quite a bit down from last week’s more than 15M views but still enough to land it at No. 1. According to Netflix, it was in the Top 10 in 92 countries.
At this point, it is quite unlikely that the series would break into the most popular list, as viewership appears to be depreciating fairly quickly. However, there are still several weeks in the show’s premiere window for it to continue racking up views, if it can maintain a steady audience.
The Gentlemen remained in third place this week with 5.6M views, while Ripley debuted at No. 8 with 2.3M views. HBO has another Netflix hit on its hands, as Sex and the City...

Got science questions? Yeah, us too.
If you’ve raced through 3 Body Problem, the new series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood writer Alexander Woo, chances are you want to know more about everything from Sophons and nanofibers to what actually constitutes a three-body problem. After all, even the show’s scientists are stumped when they witness their well-known theories unravel at the seams.
But for physicists like 3 Body Problem’s Jin (Jess Hong) and real-life astrophysicist Dr. Becky Smethurst (who researches how supermassive black holes grow at the University of Oxford and explains how scientific phenomena work in viral videos), answering the universe’s questions is a problem they’re delighted to solve. In fact, it’s part of the fun. “I feel like scientists look at the term ‘problem’ more excitedly than anybody else does,” Smethurst tells Tudum. “Every...

Netflix is at or near the top of both Nielsen and Luminate’s streaming rankings every week, but achieved that with some titles that differ from its usual fare during the March 29-April 3 viewing window.
As expected, “3 Body Problem” remained the most-watched streaming original series of the week per Luminate with 964.1 million minutes watched (an estimated 3.6 million views) — unsurprising, as the title is the follow-up from “Game of Thrones” helmers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who created the show alongside Alexander Woo.
But right behind it was “Testament: The Story of Moses,” a biblical series that Netflix calls a “docudrama” that landed on the streamer in time for Easter weekend. Though the project differs from the content typically prioritized by Netflix (and most streamers) it reached a strong 707.8 million minutes watched. Divided by the series’ just over 4-hour runtime, that translates to an estimated 2.8 million views.

3 Body Problem has landed on the top spot of Netflix’s Top 10 list with 15.6 million views, but is it good enough for a series which reportedly boasts a price tag of $20 million per episode?
To put it in comparison, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted in the number one spot upon its release with 21.2 million views. The show would be dethroned by The Gentlemen, which debuted to 12.2 million views and rose to 20.1 million views the following week. While viewership numbers for 3 Body Problem are nothing to sneeze at, the sizeable budget could cause Netflix to pause when it comes to renewing the series.

But, as you will probably know, by the time the series actually ended, a lot of hate had accumulated, and the creators’ decision for the series finale made a lot of fans angry, many still consider the ending of Game of Thrones to be one of the worst endings in the history of television.
Recently, though, Weiss and Benioff sat down with Josh Horowitz for an interview as part of his Happy, Sad, Confused series, accompanied by Alexander Woo. The three of them are the creators of the currently popular 3 Body Problem series,...

The Game of Thrones creators are back with their newest Netflix series, 3 Body Problem. While the name literally is a physics concept, the narrative of the show is even more complex (if that was even possible). Based on the Chinese novel of the same name by author Liu Cixin, the show has been wreaking havoc on the internet for its complicated yet intriguing narrative.

The essence of Netflix’s apocalyptic sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” is contained within the immersive VR game engineered by the San-Ti aliens. Using a headset, the VR game transports the player from China’s Shang Dynasty to Tudor England to Kubla Khan’s Xanadu, recreating the chaotic destruction of the alien planet as a result of living in an unstable three-star solar system.
In adapting Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novel, showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”) and Alexander Woo made the VR game the VFX centerpiece early on, particularly for Episode 3 (“Destroyer of Worlds”), directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton (“Wall-e”). Here cosmologist Jin (Jess Hong) and entrepreneur Jack (John Bradley) stand on the observation deck of the Kubla Khan Pleasure Dome and witness 30 million people getting sucked up into the sun because of reverse gravity. It’s a trippy CG effect from Scanline.

Very few people in show business have a better understanding of what it takes to spearhead a massive, multimillion dollar production on the scale of "3 Body Problem" than showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Benioff and Weiss guided "Game of Thrones" to eight total seasons, many of which included the most expensive installments of television ever committed to the small screen at the time, while Woo served as producer and writer on "True Blood." With so many moving parts to keep track of and so many urgent matters demanding attention at any given time, in all honesty, it's not terribly shocking that even this top creative team would have to scramble at the last minute to include a scene of utmost narrative importance.

Weiss, along with writer-cum-producer Alexander Woo, this one is about alien invasion and is adapted from the Chinese novel of the same name by Liu Cixin.

What’s more interesting is the fact that this series almost earned a cameo from none other than the former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama. However, even though he previously admitted that he was a noted fan of the novel, Obama ended up rejecting them, and now the showrunners are getting candid about it.

Game of Thrones co-showrunner David Benioff, joining 3 Body Problem co-creators D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo in a conversation with Josh Horowitz, talked about the execution of one particular Sophie Turner moment in the sixth season of the renowned fantasy drama television series. The moment marked the show’s peak and made the writer-producer realize he could die with no regrets.

Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy and about two dozen other familiar comedic faces are out to revolutionize breakfast in a new trailer for the Netflix movie Unfrosted.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem was actually finished and ready to be released on the streamer in mid-2023.
But showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo realized their sci-fi epic adaptation of Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novels was missing something: Their first episode quickly plunged viewers into a mystery surrounding the suicides of top scientists and a mix of brainy characters — but too quickly and, even, rather confusingly.
So they crafted a scene to be shot and inserted near the very beginning, of Auggie (Eiza González) and Jin (Jess Hong) having a drink in a bar. The five-minute scene accomplishes an extraordinary amount of heavily lifting in a very short time. The scene introduces Auggie and Jin, gives them a chance to literally spell out their respective careers (when they’re approached by a drunken flirt), gives some sense of their romantic lives (like when Auggie gets a call...

Generally speaking, we don’t cover advertising campaigns here at Den of Geek. Streamers and studios have plenty of resources when it comes to audience development and they don’t need our help. Sometimes, however, a marketing push is so charming and whimsical that it demands at least some attention. Such is the case with Netflix‘s latest efforts to promote its sci-fi series 3 Body Problem.

“You are bugs” and you have been warned.
You might have spotted that message out in the world or on social media lately and if you’ve watched3 Body Problem, you know by now, nowhere is safe from the San-Ti. Humans might be the most dominant species on Earth, but to some, we’re simply pests. What exactly does this menacing phrase mean for our future?
In 3 Body Problem, humanity faces its greatest threat — not from our own planet — but from the San-Ti, an extraterrestrial civilization making a 400-year trek through space to conquer Earth and crush its inhabitants like an insect under their shoe. Inspired by the internationally celebrated novel The Three-Body Problem and created by David Benioff, D.B. Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 1, Episode 3 of “3 Body Problem,” currently streaming on Netflix.
When David Benioff and D.B. Weiss first approached John Bradley about starring in their new series, “3 Body Problem,” they explained that his character would in many ways be the antithesis of the role that launched the actor’s career on their previous show, “Game of Thrones.” On that series, Bradley’s Samwell Tarly was a deferential and soft-spoken nobleman forced to forsake his fortune and standing for a life of anonymity. On “3 Body Problem,” Bradley’s Jack Rooney is a brash and self-possessed working class kid who chooses to give up a career in academia to build a fortune in snack foods.
It wasn’t until Bradley received the first set of scripts for “3 Body Problem,” however, that he understood that Jack had a more fundamental difference from Sam: He’s brutally murdered.

The reactions to Netflix’s sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem are, if anything, inconsistent. The reviews from top critics are all over the place, from lavish praise to disses and everything in between. Viewers are similarly split, with some fans of Liu Cixin’s novel criticizing the series for its bold adaptive choices, and many others saying 3 Body Problem is one of the best genre shows they’ve ever watched (one might say it’s a chaotic era of 3 Body Problem reactions). Yet among fans who have finished the show so far, one consistent reaction is emerging: The show’s cliffhanger ending (no spoilers here) left them really wanting to see what happens next.

Netflix’s acclaimed new sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem is getting some heated reactions from viewers in China, while its opening scene is drawing praise among some conservatives in the United States.
The big budget adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning 2008 novel tells the story of humanity preparing for an alien invasion. The show’s opening is set in 1966 and depicts a Chinese Cultural Revolution struggle session at a Beijing university where a physics professor is brutally beaten by Red Guards for his refusal to conform to government beliefs before a jeering crowd.
It’s a sequence that’s crucial to the story and direct from the novel but was notably not depicted in the 30-episode Chinese adaptation of the book by Tencent which was released on streamers last year. (The Chinese Communist Party has been accused of trying to erase the Cultural Revolution and its atrocities from history and pop culture.

As quickly as it started, Netflix’s eight-episode “3 Body Problem” ends, in a blur of VR headsets and scientist murders and that one time they sliced up a ship like bologna.
Though it hasn’t been greenlit yet, creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have plans for Season 2, and Cixin Liu’s book series is a trilogy. Even if this is the end for now, the story remains open-ended. So what should viewers make of the finale?
What matters most is the foundation laid in previous episodes. An alien civilization called the San-Ti is headed toward Earth, expected to arrive in over 400 years. Though their original goal was to conquer Earth and escape their own tri-solar system, they realized that human technology would advance and likely surpass the San-Ti’s by the time they arrive. “This is a funeral procession,” their VR avatar says in a previous episode.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have returned for their next act with a bold new science fiction series that is as entertaining as it is full of big ideas. The Emmy-winning duo teams with Alexander Woo (“The Terror: Infamy”) for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Chinese novel “The Three-Body Problem,” which is the first in a trilogy that was once deemed unadaptable. But hey, we’re all about proving people wrong these days.

Ramin Djawadi, the composer who wrote one of the most recognizable, hummable opening credits themes of all time, is teaming up again with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as co-showrunner Alexander Woo on a very different series, 3 Body Problem.
Instead of dragons and fantastical turf wars, the speculative sci-fi thriller immerses you in existential mysteries and the lives of an international cast of characters while transporting you through multiple chronologies, dimensions, and continents.
Tying so many epic storylines and ambitious themes together is Djawadi’s sophisticated score, which experiments with character-driven melodies, ominous rhythms meant to evoke otherworldly communications, abstract sound design — and a strategically timed Lana Del Rey classic. Read on for more on Djawadi’s process working with Benioff and Weiss on 3 Body Problem’s opening credits theme and scoring some of the most dramatic moments in the series.

This post contains spoilers for season 1 of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
"3 Body Problem" is no "Game of Thrones." The new Netflix series may share two of its co-creators with the HBO fantasy epic (it's the first series from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss since that show signed off in 2019), but where that show's bread and butter was sword-slashing fantasy, this one offers a hefty dose of cerebral science fiction.
It's a story about scientists trying to save the world (and trying to decide whether or not it's even worth saving at all) by solving a strange series of intergalactic problems, and though it's densely plotted, it's also safe to say it's a bit of a slow burn. By the end of season 1, the aliens who have revealed themselves as the main existential threat to humankind are, after all, still 400 years away from touching down on Earth. "3 Body Problem...

Plot: A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
Review: As soon as it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were developing 3 Body Problem alongside Alexander Woo, I grabbed the novel and read it. The dense first entry in Liu Cixin’s trilogy was a fascinating look at science fiction from a Chinese vantage point with heavy political implications from the nation’s storied history. In translating the book for the screen, 3 Body Problem incorporates many of the cultural elements from the novel into a global and diverse narrative that sets the table for an ongoing series about humanity fighting against an extraterrestrial foe.

Brace yourself for a new epic drama.
From creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, and inspired by the internationally celebrated novel The Three-Body Problem, comes 3 Body Problem.“The scope and size of it was really exciting,” Woo told Netflix. “Having it rooted in a period of Chinese history was also really exciting.”
Over the course of eight episodes, 3 Body Problem immerses audiences in mysteries and earth-shattering discoveries, before potentially catastrophic consequences come to life as we know it. As you prepare to embark on this mind-boggling journey spanning continents and timelines — from the 1960s Cultural Revolution in China to the present-day streets of Oxford, England, and the United Nations in New York — here’s everything you need to know about the series.

It’s go time. The plan to intercept the alien invaders is well underway in Episode 8 of 3 Body Problem, the sci-fi thriller series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood writer Alexander Woo. But will the ambitious plan work?
The Season 1 finale sees Project Staircase put into action, as a series of 300 atomic bombs scattered through space are deployed to propel a probe toward the thousand San-Ti ships en route to Earth. There’s one passenger on board, or, shall we say, a piece of one passenger: the frozen brain of a physics teacher, Will (Alex Sharp).
While Jin (Jess Hong) agonizes over the fate of the project — and, more importantly, of her good friend Will — Saul (Jovan Adepo) faces a new challenge when he’s recruited to join a mysterious project of his own.
