Compression is the latest film from Jakob Bilinski who directed, edited, shot and co-wrote the film with Peter Matsoukas. It’s certainly grabbed some attention, debuting a couple of weeks ago at the HorrorHound Weekend, where it picked up eleven nominations and won in seven of those categories, Judges Choice, Best Feature Film, Best Directing, Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Performance, Best Writing, and Best Editing.
Now, as regular readers will know, I’m a bit cynical when it comes to awards from festivals and conventions. But HorrorHound is a well-known event with a track record, not some unknown festival that’s there to collect entry fees and sell trophies. In the first minutes of “Oddity,” a woman is faced with an impossible choice. She is home alone while her doctor husband works the night shift at a psychiatric hospital. A strange man missing an eye shows up at her door. He claims not to be a threat and informs the resident that someone else, who is trying to hurt her, is already inside the large and isolated home. Should she open the door for this figure or ignore his warning? The nerve-racking scenario takes hold of one’s anxieties and sets the tone for an unsettling ride, which IFC will release theatrically before the film streams on Shudder.

Taylor Zakhar Perez said he was thinking about Pride and Prejudice, 10 Things I Hate About You and more classic romances when filming his big romantic scene in Prime Video’s hit Red, White & Royal Blue. Perez plays Alex, the son of the President (Uma Thurman) who falls in love with British Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). Alex confesses his love to Henry after walking in the rain to get to Henry’s castle.
“It did feel very Mr. Darcy,” Zakhar Perez said on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television. “It felt a little Ryan Gosling in The Notebook, 10 Things I Hate About You in that realm of films. Those are things you watch growing up and you’re like I want to make that feeling for this film.”
As for Alex’s political speeches, Zakhar Perez said he studied former President Barack Obama’s delivery as a reference.

Ryan Paevey was one of the Hallmark hunks who starred in several movies for the channel over the years.
He also starred as the hunky police officer, Nathan West, on General Hospital.
Before getting into soaps and film, Ryan did modeling work and appeared in several movies.
The actor had yet to announce any upcoming projects with Hallmark, which prompted concerned fans to worry about his future with the popular channel.
Unfortunately, it seems Ryan doesn’t have anything planned for 2024 for Hallmark at this point, and he is considering walking away from acting.
This isn’t the news Mr. Darcy fans hoped to get from him.

From pressed pennies to serial killer trophies, collections come in all shapes and sizes. Special assortments do not have to be uniform, nor does their common trait need to be immediately apparent. Just take the menagerie of artifacts in the basement from “Cabin in the Woods” or the museum of haunted items central to “The Conjuring” series. In fact, some of the best collections are really puzzles holding the solutions to even more arcane mysteries.

Watching characters from Bridgerton and other period dramas whirl their prospective love interests around the ballroom floor has inspired fans to take up Regency-era dancing themselves, a UK-based dance teacher reports.
Historical dance teacher Lottie Adcock told BBC Radio York that she has seen a rise in the number of students wanting to learn the style of dances seen in Bridgerton, any number of Jane Austen adaptations and other period dramas set in the Regency era of the early 1800s. She added that the average age of prospective students had also dropped.
Adcock runs a school called Dance the Past and she explained: “Regency dancing is definitely having a resurgence and the people who watched Mr Darcy think, ‘Actually I want to have a go at doing that.

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier talks to us about the making of the 2015 survival thriller Green Room, which is getting a new disc release this month.
In October 2014, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier had a bit of a problem. Green Room, the follow-up to his micro-budget thriller, Blue Ruin, was nearing the start of shooting, but he still hadn’t managed to cast the role of Darcy – a club owner and leader of a group of rural Neo-Nazis. Most worryingly, as sets for the film were being built, Green Room’s financiers had threatened to withdraw funding if Saulnier couldn’t find a ‘name’ actor.
Fortunately for Saulnier, the script had been sent out to the legendary Patrick Stewart, and despite – or perhaps because of – the less-than-appealing nature of the Darcy character, he agreed to star at the last minute. “He kind of saved the movie,” Saulnier tells us almost a decade on.

Mamma Mia! wasn’t just a film; it was a global phenomenon that had everyone saying ‘Thank you for the music.’ With Streep belting out Abba hits, it’s no wonder this flick danced away with over $600 million worldwide. And let’s not forget the Greek island setting that made us all want to throw a wedding party, even if we weren’t getting hitched. Bridget Jones is back for a fourth film, and filming will be getting underway in the spring. Renee Zellweger leads the returning cast.
Helen Fielding’s big knicker wearing, perennial singleton Bridget Jones has headlined three feature films so far – 2001’s Bridget Jones’ Diary, 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby.
The first film followed Bridget as she struck up a relationship with the smarmy, charming Daniel Cleaver, played by Hugh Grant, not realising that her perfect match is Mark Darcy. Darcy of course was played, in an inspired piece of casting, by Colin Firth – the pathetic fist fights between the two men stand as highlights of both films.
The second sees Bridget once again taken in by Cleaver’ charms in Thailand, before she ends up in prison. The third film sees Bridget end up pregnant, unsure whether Darcy or Patrick Dempsey’s Jack is the father.

This post contains spoilers for Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1.
Who are Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch? Most would say that they are Marvel superheroes, twin members of the Avengers and, sometimes, the X-Men. And while those answers aren’t wrong, the truth has always been a bit more complicated when it comes to these two. And the new series Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #1 — by writer Steve Orlando, artist Lorenzo Tammetta, colorist Frank William, and letterer Ariana Maher — only makes it more complicated.
Since their first appearance in 1964’s X-Men #4, the twins have gone from heroes to villains and back again. Moreover, their parentage has changed time and again, going from the kids of Romani villagers Django and Marya Maximoff to the children of Golden Age heroes Miss America and the Whizzer. In the most popular and most long-running explanation, Magneto has been presented as the true father of Pietro and Wanda.

In the world of movies, some roles just stick with you because of the actors who nail them. Take Matthew MacFadyen’s Mr. Darcy in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice flick, for example. But here’s a surprise: Tom Hardy, the tough guy from other movies, could’ve been in his shoes. Yeah, crazy, right? It turns out the 46-year-old auditioned for the role, but luck wasn’t on his side.

Before embarking on his acting career in the British theater, Tom Hardy was a troublesome youngster, expelled from three different schools. He gained notoriety and acclaim in the film industry after notable performances in the 2001 military film Black Hawk Down and the television miniseries Band of Brothers. With that said, he was rejected for a role that made Matthew MacFadyen one of the best actors ever.

Eventually, Tom Hardy further cemented his legacy with roles in films and series such as Mad Max: Fury Road, Peaky Blinders and many more. Therefore, his excellent acting skills can never come under question, but sometimes even he doesn’t get the role he desires.

It is a truth universally acknowledged…that 19th century author Jane Austen wrote some of the all-time great romances. So using her work as a jumping-off point for four Hallmark Channel love stories makes perfect sense. Here are the swoonworthy titles airing every Saturday in “Loveuary” (aka February). Paging Mr. Darcy “I will not be dancing, dressing up or pretending to be a teenaged heroine husband-hunting in a dead century,” declares scholar Eloise (Mallory Jansen), scoffing that the conference she’s attending is less of an academic event and more “like Comic-Con for Jane Austen fans.” But once she’s assigned a “guest of honor liaison” outfitted as Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Darcy, Eloise starts to realize her own, er, prejudices may be why she’s still alone. Love & Jane Hallmark faves Alison Sweeney and Benjamin Ayres headline a charmer about star-crossed loves. Sweeney stars as Lilly, a...

‘Paging Mr. Darcy’
Professor Eloise Cavendish (Mallory Jansen) is a Jane Austen scholar invited to give a talk at an annual conference about the famous author. But the event combines serious scholarship with fandom, and Eloise isn’t sure how her work – which focuses on the role of money, not love in Austen’s novels – will be received. Nor is she impressed when she meets Sam (Will Kemp), the event’s official Mr. Darcy. But Eloise and Sam soon discover that they have more in common than they first thought.

In all of Stephen King’s massive catalog, few works are as bleak as his 2010 novella collection Full Dark, No Stars. Rather than supernatural entities, these four dark tales feature human monsters and deal with the horrors that live inside the human heart. Two novellas serve as mirror images of each other, exploring the female response to predatory men. “Big Driver” follows cozy mystery writer Tess Thorne on a mission of revenge against the stranger who raped her and left her for dead. “A Good Marriage” centers Darcy Anderson, a happily married woman faced with a horrifying choice when she discovers her husband’s secret life.
Both novellas were faithfully adapted into feature films in the year 2014 – for better or worse. Premiering on Lifetime, Big Driver tackles King’s rape-revenge story with Maria Bello staring as the vigilante writer and Olympia Dukakis as her literary detective. Ann Dowd and Joan Jett...

What if? Season 2, Episode 3, began with the Watcher narrating one of his favorite Yuletide stories from the multiverse of Avengers. On the night before Christmas, the Avengers were seen getting into a fierce fight with a purple-colored Hulk-like monster, who is the real surprise of this episode of What if? In this alternative reality among the multiverse of the Avengers, Happy Hogan accidentally turned into a gigantic, purple-colored Hulk and saved Stark Tech from Tony’s long-standing rival, Justin Hammer. Let’s see how that pans out in this episode.
Spoilers Ahead
How did Justin Hammer hijack the Stark Tech Tower?
As the Watcher continued narrating his favorite Christmas story, we went back to Christmas Eve, when each of the Avengers was busy enjoying their Christmas Eve parties. While Natasha was stuck somewhere with a Hydra agent, Tony and Captain were busy playing Santa and his elf at a Christmas party.

Even with its shortcomings, Marvel's "What If...?" season 1 is the closest the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to realizing the true potential of the multiverse in terms of storytelling. The hope, then, is that the animated series will dispense with the training wheels entirely with its next batch of episodes and really have fun with the concept, rather than restricting itself to re-imagining events from MCU movies and TV shows past. And so far, it appears season 2 will do just that, with an episode inspired by the Neil Gaiman-penned Elizabethan era comic arc "1602" and another one centered on a brand-new character in the form of the Mohawk hero Kahhori.
Of course, there's still plenty of room for new stories featuring old favorites, including treasured supporting players and frequent comic relief sidekicks Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). Those two specifically will team up in "What If.

This article contains major spoilers for "Saltburn."
Filmmaker Emerald Fennell is officially two-for-two when it comes to movies that people either love or hate. Her 2020 feature directorial debut, "Promising Young Woman," got everyone hyped with a killer trailer and early rave reviews, but the ending earned a lot of backlash. Now Fennell's second film, "Saltburn," is carving an even sharper chasm in opinion.
It's only fair to confess right away that "Saltburn" is in serious danger of being my favorite film of 2023. First of all, it's a nostalgia-seeking missile for anyone who went to a British university in the mid-to-late aughts, especially when it comes to the needle drops. My other weaknesses include big old houses, comically posh characters, gross stuff, morbid humor, fun villains, lavish costumes, references to Greek mythology, and hot people lounging around having lazy summers, so really, I was doomed to love this one (see also:...

Marvel might not be having the best time at the moment, with movies underperforming and TV shows receiving mixed receptions (though Loki Season 2 has been a bright spot). The company will no doubt be hoping for something of a Christmas miracle, and is looking to animated series What If…? to deliver. The show, which explores the various facets of the multiverse to see different versions of established (and some new) Marvel heroes, returns next month, and the trailer is online:

Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy will return in an upcoming sixth season of their hit Shudder series “The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs,” Deadline has exclusively reported today.

Additionally, “The world’s foremost drive-in movie critic, Briggs will next be back for two Halloween-themed specials in October, a holiday special in December, and a Valentine’s Day special in February, before transitioning to a new series format in March 2024.”
What is this “new format,” you ask? Deadline notes that “The Last Drive-In” will spotlight one movie every other Friday night, versus the double features we’ve become accustomed to.

Season 1 of Heartstopper was a superhit because of its accuracy to the graphic novels and how perfectly the actors fit their roles. On top of that, all the little details, from the LED lights that read “music” above Charlie’s bed to the exact same poses in the polaroids from the beach day down to the little drawings that pop up every time Nick and Charlie are feeling their feelings, are extremely exciting for long-term fans, as well as new details to look forward to for people who skipped the graphic novels. Now in Heartstopper season 2, we focus more on the scenes that are exactly the same as the graphic novels and also the little callbacks to season 1 that you may have found familiar but not realized why. Heartstopper Season 2 diverts a little more from the books because there’s a bigger interest in other main characters as well, whereas...

The Season 2 finale of Netflix’s Heartstopper is aptly titled: “Perfect.” Although in some ways, the episode drops the Truham-Higgs gang into a best of times/worst of times scenario, creator Alice Oseman, on whose graphic novels the series is based, not only sticks the landing but beautifully sets the stage for takeoff on Season 3. (You’ll recall that, after seeing how rapturously received Season 1 was, Netflix gave it a two-season pickup.) So what actually happens? Read on…

Season finales are tricky to pull off, but one thing that has become clear after watching many bad ones is that no one needs huge cliffhangers or shocking deaths.
Heartstopper's allure has always been that even when things are bad, there is always the possibility of life getting better, and they always do in this world.

Paris was a great escape from the problems the kids faced in their day-to-day lives, but all things must end, even the best of them.
When everyone left for Paris on Heartstopper Season 2 Episode 6, they had something bothering them, and on return, most had found a solution. With certain issues out of the way, those that arose while in Paris became the main ones.
But before that, everything was okay. It was more than okay. It was near perfect.
Charlie: You should've come. It was really fun.

Some people's existence is disappointing, and no matter how low we trim our expectations, they can never seem to surpass them.
The Paris trip was on its final leg on Heartstopper Season 2 Episode 6 as Nick suffered some losses but had a major win.
Before the group departed for Paris, Nick had been excited to see his dad when he arrived in the city.
He sent multiple texts, left voicemails, and when his dad finally returned them, Nick was super excited to hear they would be spending some time together.
This was not like other times because he was also excited to introduce Charlie to his dad.
The excitement lasted a short while after they met Stephane. From his demeanor, one would peg him as a fun guy who was quite excited to see his son.
And then he opened his mouth.
The man had no idea about anything in his son's life.

Counting down to Season 2 of Netflix’s LGBTQ+ romantic dramedy Heartstopper, Swifties were abuzz with chatter that Tay Tay might have a song on the soundtrack. The new season of Heartstopper exceeds expectations and is the perfect optimistic watch this summer. Read our full review to see why you should put everything aside and binge-watch Nick and Charlie’s journey again. There are a lot of new developments this season, not just for our main protagonists but for everyone in the friend group. There are a lot of obstacles to tackle and so little time. This season is a rollercoaster of emotions, and this is your warning to keep your tissues and a bottle of water ready. Heartstopper season 1 ended on a happy note, with Nick finally being able to come out to his mother as bisexual. The scene is so wholesome that fans even used it to come out to their own families (protect). The new season picks up right after that moment.

Who wants to bet Nick will fail the no-kissing-Charlie challenge shortly?
The much-anticipated Paris trip began on Heartstopper Season 2 Episode 4. That meant not one but five full days of unadulterated fun for Truham and Higgs' students.
Being in Paris, however, did not stop everyone from stressing out over the problems they'd been dealing with all term.
The trip also presented a unique opportunity for everyone to confront their issues head-on, and it seemed all would be okay before the trip ended.
Nick and Charlie had been waiting for this trip forever. They had romanticized it in their minds, but it was a bit underwhelming when it finally arrived.
It's pretty clear they'd both replayed different versions of life together in Paris, which isn't surprising.
By then, Nick thought he'd be out to the rugby lads, leaving him free to get physical with Charlie without worry. Charlie didn't want to push Nick to come out,...

Contains some plot details for Heartstopper season two but no real spoilers.
Despite featuring no superheroes, superpowers or elaborate plans to destroy Gotham City, Heartstopper was one of 2022’s most anticipated comic book adaptations, and its second season – out now on Netflix – was no different.
