Wake up, Mr. West. It's your birthday!
On "No More Parties in L.A." off The Life of Pablo, Kanye West describes himself as "a 38-year-old 8-year-old," which is maybe a perfect summation of the qualities that have made the 40-year-old rapper such an enigma: a larger-than-life icon who has cultivated a persona that draws as much infamy as it does reverence, with a head-spinning number of acclaimed tracks to show for it.

Somehow, as Kanye has gotten older, his almost youthful sense for defiance and creativity have created work that has only gotten more experimental, more groundbreaking, and with each new album, inspired a new crop of artists of hip hop and of music in general.

The Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes this year was enlivened by the fortuitous programming of a number of films about children channeling the bounding energy of their young protagonists, whether Sean Baker’s precocious “hidden homeless” scampering around cheap motels in Orlando in The Florida Project, Jonas Carpignano’s bracing faux-adults spitting slang and smoking cigs in a Romani community in Siciliy in A Ciambra, or the young Joan of Arc, singing and dancing in Bruno Dumont’s Jeannette.More passive than all these kids so willing to act out in difficult circumstances is Shula (Maggie Mulubwa), the young Zambian girl accused of witchcraft in Zambia-born, Wales-based director Rungano Nyoni’s bold debut feature, I Am Not a Witch. In fact, this young girl has no name and is nearly unable to speak up for herself. In the film’s opening scenes, she is accused of being a witch and, failing to deny it,...

The Life of Pablo rapper may be one of the most decorated artists at the annual awards show -- he's been nominated every year since 2008, is tied for Jay Z for the most Grammy wins with 21, and among producers, trails only Quincy Jones -- but this year he's reportedly joining his friend, Frank Ocean, in boycotting music's biggest night.

"Kanye, it's probably going to be a question of -- if it will happen, it will or won't happen closer to the show," Grammy producer Ken Erlich told Et regarding the 39-year-old artist possibly skipping the show. In 1978, Martin Scorsese shot a documentary called “American Boy: A Profile of Steven Prince” about his friend, a former Neil Diamond roadie and drug-addict best known for playing the small role of Easy Andy in “Taxi Driver.” Considered Scorsese’s “lost film,” the documentary was never released, though it lived on in bootleg copies.
In it, Scorsese interspersed home videos of Prince’s childhood with his narrations of his wild stories, including a particularly outrageous one about the time he plunged an adrenaline shot into the heart of a girl who had overdosed on heroin. The scene was made famous by Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” and Prince also tells the story in Richard Linklater’s “Waking Life.”

Watch out, world: Nasim Pedrad is about to take you over. At least that's what we're hoping happens after the announcement of her new show and Fox's latest pilot order, which is both the weirdest and the most amazing thing we've ever heard. Chad: An American Boy tells the tale of a 14 year-old Middle Eastern boy (Nasim Pedrad, naturally) "in the throes of adolescence" who finds himself having to act as the man of the house, meaning he gets to act like an adult without any of the fun of being an adult. And yes. Nasim Pedrad is a 34 year-old woman, playing a 14 year-old boy, which is our favorite new thing. "I'm thrilled to be able to portray a Middle...

Sampling 90’s club songs seems to be very in these days, as another classic track from that decade, “Rhythm of the Night,” has now been used in the new single from 3Lau and Nom De Strip, titled “The Night.” Boasting vocals from “American Boy” singer Estelle, the two producers take the decades old dance anthem and put a bit of a modern spin on it, making for another impressive big room release from Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings label.
Destined to fill up dance floors around the world, “The Night” is yet another indicator that 3Lau has successfully managed to go from creating masterful mashups to delivering finely-tuned original products. While I personally still think that “How You Love Me” is his best work to date, this new track with Nom De Strip is definitely worth a listen and has me even more excited than before to hear what other original...

We can't quite believe the X Factor final is this weekend - we're not sure we're ready to say goodbye to Simon Cowell yet - but before we get to crowning a winner, there is some very important business to attend to. Like, say, who Andrea, Ben and Fleur will be duetting with. And what their winner's singles will be. We need to know.
Well, we'll probably find out very soon but until then we'd like to wildly speculate. So below, we lay out our choices for the top three - both the silly and the serious.
Andrea Faustini
Dream Duet
Silly: Spice Girls. Just imagine. We know Andrea is a huge fan, and we also really want to see Mel B and Geri get on the same stage again. Frankly if Andrea's not belting out the chorus to 'Viva Forever' on Saturday night he doesn't deserve to win.

Shot over the course of 12 years with the same core cast, Richard Linklater's latest film Boyhood is a rare cinematic feat for reasons that go beyond its already unorthodox production. Call it "This American Boy's Life", Linklater's chronicle of growing up white and middle class in America is extraordinary merely because it is -- for being white and middle class in America --so careful, considerate and contemplative with what can seem ordinary.Boyhood begins with a shot that feels lifted from the director's animated dream-scape/ philosophy course Waking Life. Glee, Season 5, Episode 20, “The Untitled Rachel Berry Project”
Written by Matthew Hodgson
Directed by Brad Falchuk
Airs Tuesday 8pm Et on Fox
Glee‘s “The Untitled Rachel Berry Project” feels more like a series finale than a season finale. Even though there are 13 episodes left to go before the show’s real end, I’m sure most of that time will be spent tying up loose ends, as the New York crew is going their separate ways and there is a growing hole where that rambunctious glee club used to be.
Brittany’s unceremonious return to the fold, while short lived, adds back an extra level of fun and frivolity that has been missing from the group dynamic. Fans were unsure if we’d be seeing the lovable blonde turned unlikely math genius again after the actress who plays her, Heather Morris, left the show to have and bond with her first child,...

Today’s teenagers may be their own industry, but the idea that there’s a distinctive time between childhood and adulthood is still relatively new.
Filmmaker Matt Wolf explores this concept, and the genesis of western youth culture, in Teenage, an intoxicating, genre-bending portrait of teenage life inspired by Jon Savage’s eponymous book. There’s always a danger of a big budget film getting overexposed, especially when it looks so apparently awesome from the first trailer. I have waited in fear that The Lego Movie will outstay its welcome even before it has its day in the cinema, so I am once more pleasantly surprised that yet another TV spot has arrived, and the film still looks incredibly entertaining.
The Lego Movie features a cast of epic proportions voicing Lego versions of popular superheroes and iconic figures, up to and including God. He goes off on a journey for which he is totally unprepared, accompanied by the likes of Wonder Woman (Cobie Smulders), Batman (Will Arnett), and the Green Lantern (Jonah Hill). And with news today that Gavin & Stacey could be returning, we can't think of a better time to revisit the show's greatest vocal performances...

James Taylor was scheduled to perform the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ before game two of the World Series, and ‘America the Beautiful’ during the seventh inning stretch. However, he combined the two accidentally right in the beginning! Watch the video below — do you think he did a good job of covering up his mistake?
“Fire and Rain” singer, James Taylor, has been in the industry long enough to notice a mistake and fix it right away! And he did just that on Oct. 24 before the Boston Red Sox took on the Arizona Cardinals at Fenway Park for game two!

“Oh, beautiful,” he started with the lyrics of “America the Beautiful.” However, without missing a beat, he started singing the National Anthem, going right into “Oh say, can you see.”

Gay singer/songwriter Steve Grand has released the music video for “Stay,” his follow-up to “All American Boy.”
It’s filled with fun and frolic, as Steve and his friends splash in the surf, have a food fight, and at one point, Steve does get carried away, but it’s understandable considering the hot hunk he’s paired with.

Geeks Out has launched an online protest in anticipation of the November release of Ender’s Game, based on the book written by noted homophobe and National Organization for Marriage board member Orson Scott Card. If you have any doubt about if you need to separate the movie from the author, remember, he gets a share of the profit, which he’ll use to fight against your rights.
Except Card seems to be trying to wave the white flag according to Entertainment Weekly. “Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state.

Los Angeles (AP) — He's a musician without a record label, a card holder without any remaining credit. And the gig that supplies what he calls "food money" may now be in jeopardy. Last week, country musician Steve Grand posted the music video for his original song "All-American Boy," and the video has since gone viral. He's being called the first open gay country singer, and on his Bandcamp page, Grand reveals that he doesn't have a manager or a label, so he funded the project with tip money from playing piano at a Chicago piano bar and at church. The song tells the story of one guy falling for another, and the video follows Grand as he gets turned down by a boy who catches his eye. When he posted the video, Grand wrote on Facebook: "Time to be brave. The world does not see change until it sees honesty. I am taking a risk here in many ways, but really there is no choice but to be brave. To not tell this story is to let my soul die. It is all I believe in.

The video cost just $7,000, a fraction of the major-names' going rate, but it was a fortune to Grand, who came up with the entire budget himself by maxing out his only plastic to tell the video's story.

Mere hours after singer-songwriter Steve Grand released his self-funded, deeply emotional, and innocently sexy music video “All-American Boy,” he’d scored thousands of YouTube views, endorsements on Twitter from Lance Bass and John Barrowman, and the following Buzzfeed headline: “Meet the First Openly Gay Male Country Star.” Indeed, the 22-year-old musician from Lemont, Il had made an immediate impact: He was gay, he was singing about having a crush on another guy, and his confident vulnerability was undeniably anthemic.
The video, about a gay man’s heartbreaking crush on a pal, is well on its way to a seven-figure view count. Grand, who makes his living as an accompanist at his hometown’s Catholic churches, has already taken an interview with the AP and watched cross-country news reports about his video’s impact. West Hollywood, Calif. — Will.i.am says he's been unfairly accused of stealing a song from a Russian dance producer for use on his new album.
The producer-rapper-singer has acknowledged reaching out to trance producer Arty after hearing his 2011 song with London's Mat Zo, "Rebound." Will.i.am recorded a new version with Chris Brown titled, "Let's Go," which has been met with criticism online from Arty's fans.
He said he emailed Arty, who initially responded positively to an invitation to collaborate. But in recent weeks, the Russian DJ and producer told fans on his Facebook page that there was no final deal between their respective labels and "the matter is under review by our legal teams."
Will.i.am credits Arty, whose real name is Artem Stoliarov, as a writer on the song in the liner notes for his album "(hash)willpower," released this week. He blamed the slow...

From the very moment it was announced, I have been both skeptical and excited for The Lone Ranger, and not just because of the questionable casting of Johnny Depp. The original TV show was so embedded in its time, and became so iconic, that it was difficult to imagine how Disney and Gore Verbinski would go about bringing it up to date without offending just about everyone. With the latest trailer hitting, I confess that I’m still skeptical.
We have a bit more to go on in terms of plot and secondary characters now, all of which look and sound just fine to me. I’m not totally clear as to who the main villain is going to be, but maybe that’s an important reveal. And although we may see too much of Helena Bonham-Carter being weird, she does weird so very very well.

On Thursday (April 11), Lazaro Arbos -- the last guy standing in "American Idol" Season 12 -- was eliminated from the Top 6. With his departure, Lazaro leaves five girls competing for the season's top title. What did Lazaro have to say about being the final boy left in the competition? Is he sad to go? Has he at least made peace with the anger of Jimmy Iovine?
We talked to Lazaro right after the show -- some of his interview might surprise you!
How are you feeling?
Lazaro Arbos: I am excited to go home and sleep, darling. Yes, that is my main goal now!
Were you expecting to be eliminated this week?
Lazaro Arbos: I don't know. I just ... My thing was I know my first song wasn't the best song, but I think I came back with my last song. But that wasn't enough. So I wasn't shocked.

Does it hurt more when Randy Jackson tells you you’re not being saved? Or when Ryan Seacrest tells you it’s time to go home?
Eliminated American Idol contestant Lazaro Arbos probably didn’t even notice. He was still basking in his hug from Kelly Clarkson. But as he noted after he received the tough news: “I won for the boys! I’m the next American Boy Idol!”
“I think I came back with my last song. But that wasn’t enough,” said Arbos, who admitted that as soon as they broke the group up into pairs, he knew he was out.

Backstage after his not-so-surprise elimination from American Idol tonight, Lazaro Arbos was determined to go out on a high note. "I won [of] the boys," said season 12's last man standing. "I won next American Boy Idol!"He already had his next TV gig in mind, too. "My goal is to get on Glee," he told us. "I'm trying to contact [executive producer] Ryan Murphy. So if he stops by, let him know!" Then, just for good measure, he added, "Ryan, call me maybe," before starting to sing a (pitch-perfect!) rendition of Carly Rae Jepsen's monster hit. Hilarious. Say what you will about Laz—yes, he had a troubling tendency to forget the words to his songs and, no, he...

Today, it seems audiences know "Bye Bye Birdie" only from the prominent mention of it on "Mad Men," when the Sterling Cooper agency tried to copy Ann-Margret's minimalist opening number for a diet soda commercial. But when the movie musical premiered 50 years ago (on April 4, 1963), it was a huge smash. It made an instant star out of the Swedish-born actress, as well as boosting the fame of co-stars Dick Van Dyke and Paul Lynde. Based on the Broadway hit musical, "Bye Bye Birdie" was seen as a trenchant pop cultural satire at the time. Everyone knows that Conrad Birdie, the hip-swiveling rocker who is drafted into the Army, and who stages a publicity stunt on the Ed Sullivan show by agreeing to kiss a teen fan before reporting for duty, is inspired by Elvis Presley, who had to put his career on hold in 1958 when he was drafted. But...

The early results are in for American Idol‘s Great Gender Experiment of 2013!
Conducted by Mad Scientist Nigel Lythgoe, the controversial study was built around the following premise: If we stack the deck for the nation’s most popular singing competition with first-rate female vocalists and a quintet of guys with the charisma of empty tomato cans, will the speed-dialing hordes finally hand a win to a woman?
Some might argue the whole hypothesis is really nothing more than Idol shooting itself in the junk in the name of gender parity, but in a world that gives us Rihanna’s...

Quentin Tarantino has always borrowed things from other films for inclusion in his own movies – from riffing on Ringo Lam’s City on Fire for Reservoir Dogs, to using things found in Lady Snowblood as part of Kill Bill. Part of the fun of watching Qt’s films is spotting the influences, homages and other nods to great cinema and pop culture. Today we share the inspiration behind one of the most famous scenes in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, which actually was lifted almost directly from Martin Scorsese’s American Boy: A Profile of Steven Prince. During Pulp Fiction, Travolta and Eric Stoltz have to stab an adrenaline shot directly into the heart of an Od’ing Uma Thurman. They argue over who has to do it, consult a medical dictionary for guidance...

It's part 2 of Hollywood Week on "American Idol." The men's week was surprisingly free of drama. We don't think the women's turn will be quite so chill (no offense, ladies).
It's a long episode, so strap in kiddos. Here are some highlights:
Recovering anorexic Mariah Pulice does a nice job, but her crying sister really gets to us. Angela Miller rocks some "Who You Are," while Victoria Acosta sounds solid on "Killing Me Softly." The latter two advance, but not Mariah. Bummer. We see Ashley Smith, Ann Defany and Sarah Restuccio all get cut as well. It's a country face-off between Rachel Hale and Janelle Arthur, though since it's not actually an either/or proposition, they both advance. However, Janelle's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" brought tears to our eyes, it was so good.Mariah Carey gives one of her "I'm slightly drunk" smiles with glazed-over eyes. Seriously, is she the new Paula?...

Hollywood week continues and this time it was up to the girls to impress the judges, while group rounds separated the wheat from the chaff.
There is nothing quite like listening to the dulcet tones of Ryan Seacrest on a Wednesday evening, and his narration of the Feb. 13 episode of American Idol was more lovely than some of the singing. The girls battled it out for those all important places, while group rounds brought out the worst in everyone, and there was more bitchiness in this one episode than in the entire film of Mean Girls! Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson were back to make more tough decisions, and typically, they couldn’t agree on anything!
Hollywood Week: The Girls Sing
The girls’ individual rounds were rather uneventful, with veteran contestant Candice Glover being the only girl to really wow the judges.

American Idol wants a female winner worse than Simon Cowell wants you to believe in the steroid-induced relevance of The X Factor: USA. It wants a female winner more desperately than Randy Jackson needs to repeat his fifth-grade vocabulary lessons. It wants a Kelly Clarkson-Fantasia Barrino-Carrie Underwood-Jordin Sparks “I Believe This Is My Moment in Heaven” moment with the burning intensity of Jennifer Lopez’s jealousy listening to the dulcet tones of Haley Reinhart. All the contestants collected from across the country, from the streets of New York City to the open roads of Oklahoma, are gathered in Hollywood hoping to make it far enough to sing on live television.

There's always something surprisingly awesome about American Idol's Hollywood Week, even if people like Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest threaten to ruin our good time by being themselves. Though it's as choppily edited as the auditions, you feel like you're watching an MTV-era version of A Chorus Line, complete with desperate singing and wannabes chanting, "I hope I get it." (By the way, not enough fuss is made over how awful the '85 movie version of A Chorus Line was. Unthinkably bad.)
Unfortunately, this is also the hardest part of the season to critique, as we mostly catch 10-15 second song blurbs from auditioning groups, and the rest of our time is wasted watching tired contestants weep about how hard it is to remember the lyrics, choreography, and passion of "What Makes You Beautiful." No matter: Here's a short blitz of the necessary bits from Wednesday's inaugural Hollywood episode featuring only male singers.

It's Hollywood Week on "American Idol," which is always a fun part of the process. This time, however, it's split up men and women. Keith Urban compares it to "The Hunger Games" and ... he's not wrong. Though it would really spice things up if they were given weapons.
It's a long episode, here are some highlights:
The "sudden death" portion is kept blissfully short, flying by in a series of quick clips and a few people advancing/getting rejected. We move right on to the group round. This year, the groups are pre-determined, which is interesting. We don't know if it's that, or the lack of girls that keeps it so drama-free, but the men seem to get along really well (sorry to betray the sisterhood, ladies). The Math-heads is a stand out group on "Somebody to Love" -- tight harmonies, good solos.
