Cannes Film Festival says it is anticipating in-person industry attendance at its 2022 edition to be “much higher than last year”, with the vast majority of delegates set to make the trip.
Last year, the French fest reported 10,000 total registrations for its market, split roughly evenly between on-site and online attendance. That total was in line with 2020, when the event was entirely digital due to lockdowns, with 10,000 professionals registering for the virtual market.
In 2019, pre-Covid, Cannes saw more than 12,500 industry delegates jet to the Riviera. Currently, registration numbers are tracking below 2019, but the fest is expecting many to make last-minute decisions amid degrees of ongoing uncertainty.
Jerome Paillard, who is set to oversee his final Marche du Film before handing over the keys to Guillaume Esmiol, told Deadline that this year the event was forecasting only 10 of delegates to be virtual attendees, with the remainder traveling to France.

Since becoming one of Red Dirt and Texas country’s flagship acts in the late Nineties and early 2000s, Jason Boland & the Stragglers have been a steady, reliable source of smart, gritty songwriting and hearty country-rock albums. More than half of the programme of this year’s cancelled Hkiff is screening at K11 Art House in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong International Film Festival (Hkiff) usually takes place over the Easter holidays in March-April, but this year was first postponed to late August, then eventually cancelled, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While many festivals in Asia have managed to take place with physical screenings, albeit without international guests, Hkiff fell victim to unfortunate timing. A third wave of Covid-19 emerged in the city in July, just weeks before the festival was scheduled to take place, forcing Hong Kong...

Even as some film industry events are now firming up their schedules, others are being forced to cancel, due to continuing travel restrictions and new outbreaks of the coronavirus. The result is a fast-changing calendar of conferences, conventions and festivals going into the northern hemisphere fall.
On Wednesday, the CineAsia distribution and exhibition sector convention pulled the plug in its 2020 trade show and convention. “Out of concern for the safety of everyone involved, we regret to announce that CineAsia 2020, to be held 7-10 December in Bangkok, Thailand has been canceled. Given ongoing uncertainty over the Covid-19 pandemic and taking into account travel restrictions by governments as well as employers, we feel this is the prudent decision. Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing everyone in Bangkok next year at CineAsia 2021 — 6-9 December.
The same day, leading documentary event The World Congress of Science and Factual Producers announced it will change format.

The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (Hkiffs) announces plans today to hold the 44th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF44) from 18-31 August 2020.
The flagship 14-day event is financially supported by Create Hong Kong, with Fwd as its main sponsor.

In the more than six months that protest movements have rocked Hong Kong, a whole range of business sectors have become color-coded, as both Beijing-loyal blue elements and yellow pro-democracy forces have weaponized the economy.
Companies on the front line include leading bank Hsbc, airline Cathay Pacific and even the subway operator Mtrc. Effects range from a poorly observed boycott of Starbucks, where a family member of the local franchise holder has spoken out against protesters, to lonely hearts who choose to flag their political colors on dating apps in order to avoid future incompatibility.
Hong Kong movie-goers have largely turned their backs on mainland Chinese films. The phenomenon is not entirely new, but it is starkly illustrated by the upcoming Chinese New Year season.
Films releasing in Hong Kong over the next two weeks are a mix of those driven by Hollywood’s global schedules – “Dolittle” and “Spies in Disguise” release on Jan.

The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (Hkiffs) announces a long-term collaboration with Italy’s world-renowned Cineteca di Bologna to promote film heritage conservation through screenings, exhibitions and seminars of restored classics.
A significant feature of this collaboration will involve Hkiffs bringing some of Cineteca di Bologna’s priceless collection of restored film classics in specially curated programmes to Hong Kong’s audience, starting from the 44th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF44) in 2020. Hkiffs’s year-round repertory Cine Fan Programme will also benefit from this partnership.
To reciprocate, Hkiffs will collaborate with Cineteca di Bologna in identifying and recommending notable films from the region for preservation, and to assist in curating Chinese language programmes for future editions of Il Cinema Ritrovato, the world’s leading festival for restored and rediscovered films held in Bologna each year.
In welcoming this new initiative, Hkiffs executive director Albert Lee notes the growing global interest in film conservation.
