King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have shared three new singles: “Theia,” “The Silver Cord,” and “Set.” It’s the first preview of their upcoming 25th studio album The Silver Cord, which arrives October 27th.
The Silver Cord has been billed as a more electronic-leaning project to come from King Gizzard, whose members cited artists like Kraftwerk and Donna Summer as inspiration. You can definitely hear those influences on “Theia,” “The Silver Cord,” and “Set,” which trade in the band’s usual rowdy guitars for layered synthesizers and heavy-hitting electro beats — though not at the expense of their usual weirdo appeal.
As the band previously explained, The Silver Cord will be presented in two versions: The original tracklist and an “extended mix.” “The first version’s really condensed, trimming all the fat,” the band’s Stu Mackenzie elaborates in a press release. “And on the second version, that first song,...

In the past 10 years few albums have received the praise that Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” did. Being the Edm duo’s last album before their split in 2021, the record has been cited as one of the defining albums of the 2010s due to its cultural impact as well as its critical and commercial success. All of that success translated into love at the Grammys: Daft Punk took home five awards including Album of the Year.
Daft Punk had never been huge Grammy favorites. Prior to their 2014 sweep for “Random Access Memories,” they had only won two Grammys: Best Dance/Electronic Album for “Alive 2007” and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Alive 2007),” both in 2009. But over the years the band had racked up a huge following and, most importantly, a lot of industry respect.

From cyberspace to AI, Steven Lisberger’s 1982 sci-fi classic was way ahead of its time. The team behind it explain how they made a game-changer
Back in 1982, computers meant one of two things in the popular imagination. Either they were room-sized machines used by the military-industrial complex to crunch data on stuff like nuclear wars and stock markets, or they were fridge-sized arcade games such as Space Invaders and Pac-Man. Kraftwerk were singing about home computers, but if you owned one at all, it was probably a Sinclair ZX81, which was only marginally more sophisticated than a calculator.
And yet, that summer, cinemagoers were catapulted into the digital future. Few appreciated it at the time but with 40 years’ hindsight, Steven Lisberger’s sci-fi adventure Tron was the shape of things to come: in cinema, in real life, and in virtual life. As a piece of entertainment, it is admittedly no classic,...

Let’s get this out the way early – yes, you are correct, “Sisters with Transistors” is the best title for a documentary you have seen so far this year. Doing exactly what it says on the tin, Lisa Rovner’s debut feature is a secret history of electronic music, told via the women that made it happen. No Kraftwerk, no Robert Moog, and only the most cursory mention of Leon Theremin. Instead we hear – and hear from – ten unsung (or rather un-bzzzzzzzed. There’s little singing going on) geniuses of electronic art, drawn from across continents and musical styles, dating back to classical violinist Clara Rockmore’s adoption of the Theremin in the 1920s, and passing through avant-garde art pieces, movies, TV scores and commercials.

Farewell to the great Florian Schneider, co-founder of Kraftwerk, the German electronic duo who changed everything about the way music sounds. “Kraftwerk is not a band,” Schneider told Rolling Stone in 1975. “It’s a concept. We call it ‘Die Menschmaschine,’ which means ‘the human machine.’ We are not the band. I am me. Ralf is Ralf. And Kraftwerk is a vehicle for our ideas.” As his longtime collaborator Ralf Hütter once said, Schneider was the “sound fetishist” of the group — the machine in the mensch-machine.
Kraftwerk always reveled in their reputation as cerebral technocrats.

Following an uproar from Motörhead’s fans and surviving members, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has added drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell to the list of eligible band members on the ballot for the class of 2020 nominations.
Both Dee and Campbell weren’t included in the band’s original nomination – the ballot only recognized original members Lemmy Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor – even though they were in Motörhead longer than the musicians they replaced.
