The saying “90 percent of directing is casting” has been attributed to everyone from John Ford to Robert Altman to Martin Scorsese, but in the case of Netflix’s much-buzzed-about romantic political drama “The Diplomat,” you might even be able to crank that number to 95, especially as casting director Julie Schubert tells it, getting your first-choice leads is the ultimate Hail Mary pass.

This story about Keri Russell and “The Diplomat” first ran in the drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
It’s a little surprising to learn that Debora Cahn did not write the lead role of her new Netflix show “The Diplomat” — U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kate Wyler — for Keri Russell. The role requires someone serious but shambolic, beautiful but uninterested in her beauty, smart but susceptible — and, of course, tangled in a love-hate marriage with her husband, Hal, played by lovable rogue Rufus Sewell.
Who else would you want but the woman we know as the charming title character in “Felicity” turned steely spy in “The Americans,” Keri Russell? You know — the adorable person you definitely do not mess with?
But Russell, 47, it turns out, was totally unavailable. “I wasn’t shopping around for a television show,” Russell said via Zoom from London, wearing big cool-dork...

Midway through Episode 6 of The Diplomat, Keri Russell‘s titular emissary Kate Wyler takes a nasty spill down a stairwell as David Gyasi’s Austin Dennison understandably looks on in horror. Viewers of the Netflix drama were no doubt similarly distressed considering the sequence was shot without any well-timed cutaways — and with Russell in full view the entire time (see for yourself above).

Kate Wyler was always going to end “The Diplomat” wearing a red dress.
The instantly iconic look in the Netflix series’ season finale finds Keri Russell’s newly appointed diplomat to the U.K. attending a gala at the Louvre in a flowing red gown, evoking none other than Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face.” And that particular look was written into series creator Debora Cahn’s script from the beginning.
“Red was always in Debora’s script,” “The Diplomat” costume designer Roland Sanchez told IndieWire. “Debora laid it all out. She’s very in tune. She’s very costume oriented and there’s reasons why she does things for these characters.”
Working from the script, Sanchez found a red dress from Galvan London that fit the bill. But then the location scout brought bad news. “[The dress] was originally a burgundy. But we were shooting in a burgundy room the exact color of the dress,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Diplomat,” including the ending.]
There are moments when TV run times can be a helpful kind of spoiler. If things seem a little too quiet and there’s only so many minutes left before the ending and the credits roll, there’s a certain wondering and waiting feeling. Will that tension get released or will that lack of resolution get carried over into the next episode? Watch a show for long enough — even if it’s only for a single season, like with the new Netflix drama “The Diplomat” — and you start to pick up its rhythms to the point where that anticipation comes even if you’re not checking timecodes.

Plot: Kate Wyler is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler.
Review: Political series come in two distinct flavors. One is heavily action-oriented, with thrills rooted in espionage and chase sequences like The Night Agent. The other is the intricate palace intrigue housed within the halls of political machinations like House of Cards. Now and then, a third version comes into play that is not reliant on menace or action but manages to be engaging and aspirational, like in NBC’s acclaimed The West Wing.

The Diplomat is a series created by Debora Cahn starring Keri Russell.
The Diplomat is one of those series that know how to diligently go unnoticed and, without making too much noise, give a fine serious entertainment in a political intrigue that, although it could have been better with more tension and grip, dares to bet it all and gives a chance to this good actress who is Keri Russell.
About the Series
The Diplomat has everything, in the right measure and well managed. In small doses, yes: it is a good political intrigue with well profiled characters in a story with a coherent script. It knows how to develop in terms of story and achieve balance in the eight chapters.

Finding a good show on Netflix can sometimes feel like a fishing expedition.
The sheer volume of content can make it difficult for something to stand out and command attention.
The Diplomat rises above the fray as an intelligent drama with a warm and witty feel and doesn't take its foot off the accelerator from the opening credits through the season's finale episode.
It's no surprise because creator and showrunner Debora Cahn is no stranger to political dramas.
Like The West Wing and Homeland before it, The Diplomat focuses on a particular government entity and dramatically brings it to life for viewers with its relatable characters and topical direction.

The sheer volume of content can make it difficult for something to stand out and command attention.
The Diplomat rises above the fray as an intelligent drama with a warm and witty feel and doesn't take its foot off the accelerator from the opening credits through the season's finale episode.

A surprising thing has happened over the last few weeks: The Night Agent became one of the 10 most-watched Netflix series of all time. This isn’t a knock on the spy-thriller, which features the usual solid craftsmanship of The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, a brisk pace, and some likable lead performances. But it’s also a show without big stars (even if supporting player Hong Chau is a recent Oscar nominee) or an attention-getting premise designed to spread word of mouth. It’s just… a well-made example of a very familiar TV genre,...

In a January interview with The New Yorker, Netflix executives referred to the company’s ideal programming as a “gourmet cheeseburger,” a partial intersection of quality and commerce that didn’t quite seem to align with most of the brand’s latest output.
After a somewhat fallow period, Netflix has had a strong recent run with The Night Agent (doubtlessly a cheeseburger, probably not gourmet) and Beef (doubtlessly gourmet, probably not a cheeseburger), but it’s the streamer’s new drama, The Diplomat, that comes closest to feeling like the elusive gourmet cheeseburger to me.
The Diplomat is easily accessible and quantifiable. It could be a spinoff from Homeland or Madam Secretary, and I can imagine a dozen networks and services where The Diplomat could feel on-brand.
It’s a pure star vehicle for Keri Russell and, if we’re comparing The Diplomat to other shows, as a portrait of...

Netflix has revealed the trailer for the high-stakes, contemporary political drama series ‘The Diplomat.’
Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
From showrunner Debora Cahn the series also stars David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh, with executive producers Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell.
Also in trailers – “No one is coming to rescue us…” Full trailer explodes to life for ‘Kandahar’
The series hits the streamer on April 20th.

Having had to deal with the ursine antagonist (and some annoying criminals) of Cocaine Bear, you might think Keri Russell would be ready for some quiet time. Little chance of that as she juggles thorny global political issues with drama in her personal life in new Netflix series The Diplomat. See the first trailer…

Netflix has released the first trailer for The Diplomat, a new political drama premiering on April 20, 2023. The trailer introduces Keri Russell as a recently appointed ambassador who’s called in to stop a conflict in the Persian Gulf. However, the battle at home appears just as likely to explode into a full-blown war.
Series creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn says the series is about transcendence and long-term relationships.
“It’s hard to keep a relationship going, be it a marriage or a military alliance. We change, the world changes, and yet we want these relationships to go on forever,” stated Cahn in a feature on Netflix’s Tudum. It’s a show about a bunch of good people doing their best to keep their global and personal partnerships intact without killing each other. In the world of diplomacy, you’re dealing with a lot of rule-bound, protocol-driven behavior,...

According to a series release, “The Diplomat” stars Russell as Kate Wyler, a career diplomat who upon being appointed ambassador – a job she’s unsuited for – suddenly finds herself in the middle of a massive diplomacy challenge. Wyler is expected to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London and adjust to her new place in the spotlight – all while struggling to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). Netflix further describes the series as “a high stakes, contemporary political drama about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people.”
