Denmark and Iceland dominate the main competition line-up at Germany’s 57th Nordic Film Days Lübeck, which will open on November 4 with Icelandic director Grimur Hákonarson’s Rams.
Speaking about the choice of opening film, featival director Linde Fröhlich described Rams as “a human drama filled with empathy for the protagonists as well as odd situations and comic moments, all set in a spectacular landscape.”
Denmark is represented in the Feature Film Competition with five titles, including Tobias Lindholm’s A War - Denmark’s submission for the Foreign Language Oscar - Martin Peter Zandvliet’s Land Of Mine, Chrisitina Rosendahl’s The Idealist and Frederikke Aspöck’s Rosita.

As a young child, I loved a strange range of movies, from Pretty Woman to Dirty Dancing, Fern Gully to The Little Mermaid, The Thornbirds to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. My wide, mixed up taste was bred from relatively lax familial observations of my watching habits (most of my consumption happened in front of our living room television, a room placed squarely in the middle of our long house, with occasional trips to the single screen theater in our small Vermont town, so I wasn’t really hiding anything). My parents didn’t seem to care too much about what I watched – although I do have a strong memory of going to see Summer of Sam with my parents as a teen, which included my aghast mother asking me at least ten times if I wanted to leave – and I didn’t really abuse the freedom. Amir, here, back with more coverage of new Tiff films. The Toronto International Film Festival is winding down but luckily I have a couple of big name movies still scheduled. Here's a few from the last two days.
Once Upon A Time In Anatolia (Nuri Bilge Ceylan)
This Cannes grand prix winner is a slow-paced police procedural in which a doctor, a prosecutor and a group of other police agents drag an alleged murderer along with them in the rural Anatolia region of Turkey so he can show them where he’s hidden his victim’s body. More than half of this gorgeously shot film is spent during the night and I for one wished the morning never came. Gokhan Tiryaki’s impeccable lighting and the varied range of shots he creates in the limitless but monotonous locale of the film easily tops my personal list of best cinematography of the year.
