Amber Heard will pay Johnny Depp 1 million to settle their defamation case.
On December 19, Heard announced on Instagram that it was a “very difficult decision” and made “after a great deal of deliberation.”
She further wrote, “It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimized when they come forward.”

Depp’s attorneys stated that he would donate the money to charity. In a statement, Depp’s attorneys Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez said, “We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout this process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light.

Update, 9:20 Am: Johnny Depp is “pleased” with the end of his long defamation clash with Amber Heard and the settlement between the former married couple.
In a statement sent to Deadline soon after Heard revealed a deal between the two, Depp said he plans to donate the 1 million paid by Heard (as revealed by Deadline earlier this morning; see below) to various charities. Depp’s lawyers Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez also said their client’s “priority was about bringing the truth to light” (read their statement below).
While no formal paperwork appears to have been filed in the Virginia court dockets, it appears that the agreement between Depp and Heard ends both parties’ appeals claims. Despite Heard’s assertion to the contrary, it also appears that the judgment delivered against the actress by a Virginia jury on June 1 still stands and could be enforced if she publicly repeated...

Amber Heard will pay Johnny Depp 1 million to settle their long-running legal battle, in which each accused the other of domestic violence.
The sum is a significant reduction from the 8.35 million she was ordered to pay after a six-week trial in Virginia earlier this year. The payment is expected to come from her insurance carrier.
In a statement, Depp’s attorneys said that he would donate the money to charity. His attorneys have previously said that the case was “never about the money” for Depp. In her own statement, Heard said she had “lost faith in the American legal system.” She also said that the settlement spares her the ordeal of further litigation and allows her to finally “emancipate” herself from their marriage.
Depp originally filed a 50 million defamation claim against Heard in March 2019 after she published an op-ed in the Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continue to exchange legal barbs in a Virginia appeals court, setting the stage for a higher-level debate about the line between opinion and defamation.
On Nov. 23, Heard appealed a verdict that she defamed ex-husband Depp by calling herself a survivor of domestic abuse in an op-ed in The Washington Post. The jury handed Depp a near sweep in the case, ruling in his favor on three of his claims and against him on just one. He was awarded over 10 million.
The trial revolved around accusations that Heard defamed Depp in her op-ed because it suggested that he abused her. In her 68-page appeal, Heard argued that her statements at the center of the trial were opinion and didn’t carry a defamatory implication. If the court’s ruling holding that she could be sued over what she wrote in the op-ed stands,...

Johnny Depp wants his defamation cake, and he wants to get to eat it too.
“This Court should reverse the judgment on Ms. Heard’s Counterclaim as to the April 27 Waldman Statement, but should otherwise affirm the judgment in Mr. Depp’s favor,” declared a filing today by the ex-Pirates of the Caribbean star in Virginia’s Court of Appeals (read it here).
Despite almost sweeping the table earlier this summer in the defamation trial against his Rum Diary co-star and former spouse, Depp is determined to not pay Heard the 2 million that a Virginia jury oddly awarded her in a countersuit claim.
The Aquaman star claimed that Depp was “vicariously liable” for a trio of damning and defaming statements his close pal and ex-lawyer Adam Waldman gave to UK tabloid The Daily Mail, calling Heard’s allegations of violence and abuse at Depp’s often allegedly drunken hand hogwash.

(Updated with more details & statements) Johnny Depp has won his defamation trial against Amber Heard, a Virginia jury decided Wednesday.
After less than three days of deliberation, the seven-person panel ruled that the Aquaman star defamed Depp in a late 2018 Washington Post op-ed. In the piece, Heard described herself as the “public face of domestic abuse,” more than two years after she accused Depp of physical abuse and obtained a restraining order against him.
Depp was seeking 50 million in damages, but the jury has awarded him 15 million — 10 million in compensatory damages and 5 million in punitive damages. However, Judge Penney Azcarate quickly reduced the punitive damages figure to 350,000, the maximum allowed in the state, which makes Depp’s total haul around 10.4 million.

Second Update: Johnny Depp’s attorney wrapped up their final arguments by focusing in part on Amber Heard’s 100 million counterclaim.
Camille Vasquez told jurors that in suing Depp for defamation, Heard has to “prove that her abuse claims are not a hoax.”
Heard’s counterclaim centers on statements made by Adam Waldman, who said in statements made to the Daily Mail that Heard’s allegations of abuse were falsified.
Vasquez said that there is “clear evidence that Waldman believed that Heard committed a hoax.” Depp’s attorney also tried to undermine Heard’s argument that Waldman’s statements caused her reputational harm, arguing that her negative press coverage had nothing to do with the remarks.
She also challenged Heard’s claims for damages, noting the testimony of Warner Bros. executive Walter Hamada, who said that the actress’ paycheck was not reduced for Aquaman 2 even though her role was reduced.

After six weeks of trial, attorneys for Amber Heard and Johnny Depp made their closing arguments to a Virginia jury on Friday, with each side making the case that their client was defamed in the wake of the couple’s divorce.
Each side argued that the jurors had gotten to see the “real” Johnny Depp — though they differed wildly about who that is. Depp’s attorney, Benjamin Chew, presented him as a “decent, well-liked man” whose life had been destroyed “by a vicious lie” that he had abused Heard.
Heard’s lawyer, Ben Rottenborn, countered with audio and video recordings and text messages in which Depp poured out rage against Heard, including one text in which he said he hoped that “that cunt’s rotting corpse is decomposing in the fucking trunk of a Honda Civic.”
