One was born with partial facial paralysis. The other grew up speaking Austrian-accented German, eventually transitioning to German-accented English.
If you were trying to concoct the archetypal Hollywood star in a lab, it wouldn’t be Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yet for more than 20 years they dominated the box office, their wattage rivaled only by the klieg lights of a movie premiere.
The improbable origins and unlikely rise of these two action icons are told in a couple of documentaries in Emmy contention: the feature Sly, directed by Thom Zimny, and the docuseries Arnold, directed by Lesley Chilcott.
“[EP] Allen Hughes brought the Arnold project to me,” Chilcott explains. “At first I said, ‘What don’t we already know?’ And he said, ‘I said the same thing myself.’ But then I started thinking about how weird and unusual it is that Arnold’s been successful in so many completely different areas.

"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" is likely not remembered by many people, except for Billy Crystal himself. The variety/talk show ran from January 30 through February 27 in 1982, lasting a grand total of five episodes. Crystal was already a successful comedian and beloved figure in the industry thanks to the popularity of his 1970s stand-up work and his role in the 1977 sitcom "Soap," so he had connections. He was able to secure guest appearances from many of his famous comedian friends, including Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Robin Williams, and John Candy for the debut episode. Subsequent guests included Morgan Fairchild, the Manhattan Transfer, Nell Carter, Shelley Duvall, Cindy Williams, Al Jarreau, and Smokey Robinson.
"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" fell right in between "Soap" and "Saturday Night Live" on Crystal's professional timeline, and it might be considered something of a dip in his career. The show was canceled after only two episodes aired,...

The success of the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building has exposed a new generation of viewers to the comedic brilliance and appeal of Steve Martin. But the actor-writer has been appearing onscreen since the late 1960s – and performing even before that, to smaller audiences, as a kid magician at the newly opened Disneyland.
His journey from shy, showbiz-obsessed youth in Southern California to stand-up sensation and (probably still shy) comedy legend is told in Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces, directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville.
“For years, people had asked Steve about doing a documentary. He always had said no,” Neville commented during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders: Documentary + Unscripted virtual event. “I think a combination of having a daughter and of Covid, perhaps, made him, like all of us, kind of think about everything in our lives. A group of documentary filmmakers, producers, and archivists has written a series of guidelines on how they believe filmmakers should — and should not — use generative AI in their documentary movies.
While the AI guidelines for many entertainment folks may go something like this: “never, ever, a billion times no,” the reality is that generative AI has already crept into documentary filmmaking and is likely here to stay. An organization called the Archival Producers Alliance has outlined its best practices for filmmakers when it comes to handling consent, being transparent, and preserving history and truth.
“We recognize that AI is here, and it is here to stay. And we recognize that it brings with it potential for amazing creative opportunities,” APA co-founder Jennifer Petrucelli (“Crip Camp”) said at the IDA’s Getting Real event on Wednesday. “At the same time, we want to really encourage people to take a collective breath...

As filmmakers start to incorporate more generative artificial intelligence into documentary production, leading to mounting concern over the use of “fake archival” materials, a group of producers is pushing ahead in their efforts to establish guardrails around the use of the technology in fact-based storytelling.
On Tuesday, leaders of the Archival Producers Alliance — a group of roughly 300 researchers and producers working in documentary internationally, including Oscar- and Emmy-winning filmmakers — presented their first draft of a set of proposed best practices for the use of generative AI in their field. (Archival producers find and license appropriate archival materials like historical photos and video footage for nonfiction projects.) During the session at the International Documentary Association’s biennial Getting Real Conference in Los Angeles, APA founders Rachel Antell and Jennifer Petrucelli (Crip Camp) and Stephanie Jenkins (Muhammad Ali) presented an initial outline for how filmmakers might handle consent, primary sources and transparency...

As Jerry Seinfeld, a fellow titan of comedy, once remarked, Steve Martin stands as ‘the most idolised comedian ever’. Yet, even with a career that spans over half a century and encompasses a spectrum of artistic endeavors, Martin’s view on fame is tinged with the wisdom of its impermanence. ‘If you’re anointed tonight, you can be dumped on tomorrow’, he muses, encapsulating the transient glory of show business. Steve Martin A Cultural Phenomenon Whether it’s his iconic arrow-through-the-head gag or his profound turns in cinema, Steve Martin’s journey through the entertainment landscape has been nothing short of remarkable. Spoilt queen Aimee Lou Wood faces off against Nicola Coughlan’s humble upstart in a goofy adventure played for laughs
There’s a mega-helping of daftness, silliness and goofiness in this wacky British comedy of Ye Olden Medieval Dayes from screenwriter Andy Riley and director Curtis Vowell – and I have to say the them there troupe of Mat Baynton, Simon Farnaby et al have done this kind of thing a bit better with their Horrible Histories spin-off movies, but there are some laughs and likability here, due in some part to a great cast.
Aimee Lou Wood plays the grotesquely spoilt and entitled Queen Dagan, advised by slippery Machiavellian courtier Leofwine (Jessica Hynes). Faced by a Wat Tyler-ish uprising led by “Humble” Joan (Nicola Coughlan) – who demurely insists on being just called “Joan” – the Queen finds that her screeching commands to her guards to seize the intruders have no effect.

Steve Martin is an actor, writer, producer, and musician, known among the masses for his brilliant comic skills. Considered one of the best in business, he became popular for his absurdist and offbeat comic routines, that made him one of Saturday Night Live‘s favorites, having hosted the sketch comedy show a total of 16 times, only one behind Alec Baldwin, who has the highest number, with 17 hosting stints.
Steve Martin in Only Murders In The Building
Steve Martin recently released a two-part documentary on his life by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville. Steve!, the documentary, is a reflection of life instead of being what he thinks it could be about. He is a one-man show – sometimes a two-man routine – but his charisma and hold over the subject is unparalleled.

When you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, don’t immediately dismiss Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” as just another prestige limited series about the Holocaust. It’s that, of course, but it’s also so much more.

The eight-episode limited series, the first three episodes of which are now streaming on Hulu, stands out amongst similarly themed projects for the way it expands the scope of the narrative. Unlike many celebrity-driven documentaries, Morgan Neville’s “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in Two Pieces” about the writer and comedian wasn’t deliberately made as a marketing device tied to a new TV series or movie. The two-part docu is also not your traditional career-encompassing overview of Martin’s life. Instead Neville, who garnered an Oscar in 2014 for “20 Feet From Stardom,” created feature-length installments called “Then” and “Now” that are told from two points of views using two different formats. “Then” chronicles Martin’s early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at age 35. “Now” focuses on Martin’s present day life, retracing the transformation that led to newfound happiness in his art and personal life.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on March 28th, 2024, reviewing “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces,” a history of the Wild & Crazy Guy in Then and Now. Streaming on Apple TV+ on March 29th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The two part doc is split into two sides of his career. In Part One (“Then”), the development and story of how Steve Martin took comedy to the rock and roll level from the mid-1970s to his abrupt “walking away” from his act in 1980 … at the height of his fame. In Part Two (“Now”), it’s the rest of the story, mostly his film career, but also a unique glimpse of an icon looking backwards through a prism of – given his admittedly shy personality – true satisfaction.

“My whole life is backwards,” muses Steve Martin during the second “episode” of Morgan Neville’s Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in Two Pieces.
The point that Martin is making stems not from some Benjamin Button-style anomaly, but from his contention that he has gone from being riddled with anxiety in his 30s to achieving contentment and happiness in his 70s.
While I would posit that this isn’t all that remarkable — “Finding wisdom and peace with age” seems ideal and not unusual — there’s truth to Martin’s bigger point. Biopics and bio-docs tend to have familiar arcs that allow us to reconcile the contradictions of complicated lives; Martin’s biography has no such arc.
Neville’s approach, in the annoyingly titled documentary that I will henceforth only call Steve!, is to bifurcate Martin’s life.

Back in the 1970s, when Steve Martin became a big enough stand-up comedy star to play arenas, the magazine and newspaper profiles about him would sometimes run through his pre-fame highlights, mentioning as a passing fun fact that he used to work at Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. But in Martin’s 2007 memoir Born Standing Up — and now in Morgan Neville’s Apple TV+ documentary Steve! (martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces — those amusement park years are framed as more formative. A place of excessive artificiality, where everyone play-acts at being happy until they actually start to feel it? Isn’t that the Steve Martin story?...

Plot: Steve Martin is one of the most beloved and enigmatic figures in entertainment. “Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces” dives into his extraordinary story from two distinct points of view, with companion documentaries that feature never-before-seen footage and raw insights into Steve’s personal and professional trials and triumphs. “Then” chronicles Steve Martin’s early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at 35. “Now” focuses on the present day, with Steve Martin in the golden years of his career, retracing the transformation that led to happiness in his art and personal life.
Review: It pains me to think that a generation is growing up that does not hold Steve Martin in the same regard as generations past. At 78 years old, Martin was the biggest comedian of all time for some, a movie star for others, and one of the old guys from Only Murders in the Building for the rest.

From his childhood job in Disneyland and huge standup success to movie stardom and later life career as a dry humorist this is a fascinating insight into a wild and crazy career
Comedian Steve Martin now comes as close as he’s ever going to get to opening up about his life, his thoughts and his feelings in this absorbingly detailed two-part Apple documentary by director Morgan Neville. Part one is conventionally autobiographical, with archive clips and family photos and Martin’s own sonorous, ironic voiceover covering his painful childhood: failing to please his strict dad and then the extraordinary, 15-year battle to make it as a standup, finally becoming a colossal stadium-level success in his mid-30s powered by smash-hit TV appearances on David Letterman and Johnny Carson. America loved his wacky, formless but almost childishly innocent and in many ways old-fashioned routines – a world away from the tougher...

Steve Martin has had so many phases in his nearly 60-year career that he’s now recognizable for at least a half dozen different projects. Younger fans who primarily him from his popular Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” might not be aware that he once starred in multiple hit family comedies, like “Father of the Bride” or “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Others who are familiar with Martin’s extensive film work might not necessary know he’s a gifted banjo player who has frequently played with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. But anyone born in the last three decades can be forgiven for not knowing that Martin was once the biggest stand-up comedian in America. In the ’70s, he played to enormous sold-out stadium crowds and his act became so well known that it eventually embedded itself within the American consciousness. Many if not most people of a certain age...

Steve Martin may be riding high on his success with comedy-crime series Only Murders in the Building but, in a new documentary, he reflects on some troughs in his long career as well as the many high points.
The comedian – who got his big break as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, became one of the all-time most popular hosts of Saturday Night Live and went on to huge success with movies including The Man with Two Brains, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Roxanne and LA Story – is the subject of the two-part documentary Steve! (Martin), directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville, which premieres on Apple March 29.
The doc includes an angst-inducing clip from 1996 when Martin was ambushed at the premiere of Sgt Bilko, one of his least successful movies, by the British red-carpet disruptor Dennis Pennis, played by comedian Paul Kaye. Footage, which went viral at the time, showed...

I didn’t expect Steve Martin to be funny. Sure, it was his skewwhiff sensibility that made The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, LA Story and Bowfinger so deliriously inspired. And he was comedy’s first double-platinum-record-selling, stadium-touring megastar; he began wearing a white suit on stage only so that he could be seen by fans in the cheap seats several postcodes away. He crafted riotous slapstick crescendos in All of Me and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and displayed a literary flair even at his silliest. Long before he became a major big-screen star through the ‘80s and ‘90s (subsequently going on to thrive in the streaming era too with Only Murders In The Building), Steve Martin was a stage comedian whose stand-up shows and album recordings quickly became the stuff of legend. That’s a big part of the story being told in upcoming double-pronged documentary feature Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces. As its title suggests, there are two strands to the film(s), from acclaimed director Morgan Neville – the first being ‘Then’, about Martin’s game-changing early comedy career; and ‘Now’, about his life and career in the present day. Check out an exclusive clip from the ‘Then’ portion, digging into the genius of Martin’s stand-up.

Steve Martin is a comedy legend, plain and simple. And he deserves your attention. Long before he became the star of beloved family comedies like "Parenthood" and "Father of the Bride," he was a massive stand-up comedian, selling out shows, firing off hilarious albums, and cracking up the likes of Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." He even made such big waves at "Saturday Night Live" that many people mistakenly believe he was once a full-fledged cast member. It's the kind of career open mic comics dream about. Now we're going to find out how Steve Martin made it happen.
Apple TV+ is releasing a two-part documentary from A24 and Tremolo Productions called "Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces." What's particularly interesting about this two-part approach is that it will take a look at Steve Martin's life and career from two different perspectives.

Fans of Steve Martin? Here’s the trailer for Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces – and you’re going to watch to see it.
What a joy of a title that is to type out: Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces, with insistence on lower case for certain parts, and block caps for the other. Lovely.
Anyway, to the point. Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces is – surprisingly – a major, comprehensive documentary about a man who tends as a rule to keep himself under wraps. That’d be – guess! – Steve Martin, hands on the table one on my favourite ever actors, performers and writers, and I’ve definitely not seen the finished documentary.
Well, two-part documentary. For this is an intriguing beast: two 90 minute films, made by the same director (Oscar-winner Morgan Neville), made around the same time, but edited and compiled by different teams.

“Dìdi,” a coming-of-age drama that won the U.S. dramatic audience award at Sundance, has sold to Focus Features. The semi-autobiographical film was written, produced and directed by Sean Wang in his feature debut.
The film follows a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy in the throes of an awkward adolescence, as he enjoys the last month of summer before high school begins. He experiences the pangs of first love, becomes friends with some skaters (after promising to make videos of them), fights with his older sister and gets a hard-earned understanding of his mom. It is set in 2008, when MySpace was still a thing and TikTok had yet to explode.
Wang says he hopes that audiences will be able to see a version of themselves in the film, which stars Izaac Wang as the filmmaker’s cinematic alter-ego and Joan Chen (“The Last Emperor”) as his onscreen mother.

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...
