Our occasional series of journeys back into the weirder films of the past continues with 1992's Vr horror thriller, The Lawnmower Man...
As a document of the early 1990s, The Lawnmower Man serves as a colourful time capsule. Aside from its big shirts, tight jeans and unaccountably buoyant hair, it's also a snapshot of the era's technology and fascination for virtual reality.
At a time when the media was gripped by images of people wearing cumbersome headsets and gloves pawing eerily at the empty air in front of them, virtual reality was widely considered to be the emerging technology which could transform life as we know it. And while this may yet come to pass - Oculus Rift has recently seen Vr back in the news - we're no nearer to having our daily lives transformed by it than we were 20 years ago.

I’ll be honest. Trick ‘R Treat is a cult horror movie that completely passed me by. The film, cobbling together four short “tales of terror” into a cohesive horror anthology of yore, has been a favorite Halloween movie since it arrived in theatres in 2007.
It’s only risen in stature and popularity since, and it seemed like that groundswell movement reached its crescendo last night at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for the finale of American Cinematheque and Amity’s Beyond Fest, one of the best film festivals in recent memory. The folks at Legendary teamed with the theatre to throw a bash, and provide a free screening for ardent fans of the picture. Tickets were snapped up within hours online, and the line to get in gave me a mini Comic-Con flashback. A lot of fervor for a Monday night screening, but I doubt anyone in the audience left disappointed.

Tonight I was lucky enough to attend a special event screening for Michael Dougherty's classic Halloween film Trick 'r Treat. This was my first time seeing it on the big screen, and it was an awesome experience! Just so you know, this is my favorite Halloween horror film of all time, and I've been aching to see a sequel since I first saw it! I'm incredibly excited to share with you that after the screening it was announced that Legendary Pictures would be making Trick 'r Treat 2!
After the screening there was a little Q&A with the writer and director Michael Dougherty, producer Bryan Singer, and a few actors from the film such as Dylan Baker and Bryan Cox. Near the end of the session a person dressed up in a Sam costume walked up to Dougherty and handed him a birthday card as it was his birthday as well.

Despite strong skepticism from fans of the original movies, Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal has been a surprising success for NBC, pushing the envelope of what can be seen on traditional Us network television. Whilst the series has an excellent pedigree, both in front and behind the screen, the true star of the series is Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. Taking on the iconic role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Mikkelsen – probably best known for his villainous role as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale – has broken down all expectations and crafted a new and exciting take on Thomas Harris’ cannibalistic serial killer.
In the first of our new collaborations with AskMen we got to chat with Mikkelsen about the show and his role…
Hannibal, despite the cannibalism, is really likeable in this series. How did you go about making a serial killer so empathetic?
Mads Mikkelsen: I don’t think we’re...

With Fox’s panel at Comic-Con fast approaching, Vulture has dropped some potential spoilers over some of the big reveals regarding X-Men: Days Of Future Past. According to the source, Peter Dinklage will be officially confirmed at the convention as Boliver Trask, inventor of the giant robot policemen known as Sentinels. Perhaps more surprising is the reveal that Josh Helman will play a young version of William Stryker, as played by Bryan Cox in X-Men 2, although just how he will fit into the story remains to be seen... ...

I hope you’re in the mood for some news regarding X-Men: Days of Future Past, because I have some good stuff for you.
First up, Vulture has some character confirmations.
We all knew (or at least highly speculated) that Peter Dinklage was playing Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels. Vulture has now confirmed this.
The other character is one we didn’t know about, and that is who Josh Helman is playing: William Stryker.
This makes Helman the third actor to play the character. In X2: X-Men United Bryan Cox played him and in X-Men Origins: Wolverine Danny Huston filled the shoes. Since DoFP takes place roughly ten years before Origins, it makes sense for him to be younger.
Next we have new pic from the set courtesy of Bryan Singer, and it’s of a familair face from X-Men: First Class:
Yes, Lucas Till is back as Alex “Havoc” Summers.

Thomas Harris fans everywhere will enjoy the first look at Mads Mikkelsen in character as the latest incarnation of Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter. Set to debut midseason on NBC, Hannibal will also star Hugh Dancy as Special Agent Will Graham in the series from creator Bryan Fuller (Heroes, Pushing Daisies).
Tricky business it is to fill the shoes of other actors in an iconic role (just ask the Bondsmen), but from this glimpse it appears that Mikkelsen may well be our new antihero.
Hannibal Lecter made his screen debut in 1986 with Bryan Cox in Michael Mann’s Manhunter, an adaptation of novelist Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon. While serving as a decent thriller, it fell egregiously short of honoring the source material, and after the juggernaut success of The Silence of the Lambs starring the now legendary Anthony Hopkins, the Lecter-rights-holding De Laurentiis’ rectified the situation with the solid (if...

2010's "Red" was, on paper, one of the least likely sleeper hits of the last few years: an actioner where the average age of the cast was over 60 (and that was even allowing for relative younglings Karl Urban and Mary-Louise Parker). And yet the film, based on Warren Ellis' comic book, directed by Robert Schwentke and starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, took a very solid $200 million worldwide on a budget that didn't break the bank, and Summit have been moving ahead with a sequel ever since.
Original writer Jon and Erich Hoeber were brought back, "Galaxy Quest" and "Justified" director Dean Parisot was hired to replace Schwentke, and things have been moving along swimmingly, with a release date in August of 2013 announced a while back. And now Deadline have confirmed that the surviving members of the original principle cast will be returning, and they're bringing along a few new recruits.

The first image of Will Ferrell filming for the movie “Dog Fight” in New Orleans has been released. Ferrell plays a politician battling for the congressional seat in North Carolina against his rival, played by Zach Galifianakis, who is seen addressing the press with co-star Jason Sudeikis by his side. Huffington Post quips that Ferrell’s hair in the scene is as quaffed as Mitt Romney’s. They said “Move over, Mitt Romney: there's a new political hair champion hitting the trail.” Of course this isn’t the first time that Ferrell has gotten cosy with the political game, for years he practically made a living of doing impressions of the former president George W Bush for “Saturday Night Live”. “Dog Fight” also has a great cast of comedic actors including Bryan Cox, Dan Akroyd, Dylan McDermott and John Lithgow. Here’s Will Ferrell doing an impression of former...

Move over, Mitt Romney: there's a new political hair champion hitting the trail.
Will Ferrell was snapped on the set of "Dog Fight," the upcoming political comedy in which he stars as a South Carolinian politician running for President. His campaign rival? Zach Galifianakis, perhaps the least likely presidential candidate Hollywood could conjure up. Jason Sudeikis, Bryan Cox, Dan Akroyd, Dylan McDermott and John Lithgow co-star.
The movie is being shot in New Orleans, which is being used more and more as a film location; this weekend's Mark Wahlberg-starring "Contraband" shot there, thanks to some generous tax credits. This picture comes courtesy of NolaFilms.com, which offers tours of film sets in the Louisiana city.
If this presidential candidate is anything like the last one Ferrell played (hint: George W. Bush), viewers should be in for a treat.

[1] Good things keep coming for the stars of Animal Kingdom, as Jacki Weaver lands a role in David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook. Weaver will play Bradley Cooper's mother in the film, based on Matthew Quick's novel about a former high school teacher (Cooper) who’s just been released from a four-year stint at a mental institution into the care of his mother. Upon his release, the protagonist initially tries to win back his ex-wife but eventually falls into a romance with an eccentric young widow (Jennifer Lawrence). Also signed on for the project is Robert De Niro in an unnamed part. Chris Tucker was said to be in talks [2] for the part of Cooper's pal from the institution, but the latest reports don't mention him, so I'm guessing he's out. The Silver Linings Playbook is set to begin shooting this fall. [The Hollywood Reporter [3]] After the jump, Paul Bettany...

Time to go Ape? The eagerly anticipated 20th Century Fox release Rise of the Planet of the Apes goes against The Change-Up at the box office and should top the charts with ease. Opposition for Apes is unlikely with Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens barely holding off The Smurfs in its opening weekend frame. Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 3,500 venues brings should fare well in both male and female targets, frontlining a well known cast including James Franco, Tom Felton, Freida Pinto, Bryan Cox, Tyler Labine, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow and David Hewlett. Opening in vs. 2,913 locations, the hardcore Freaky Friday flick The Change-Up could turn in mediocre coin in the R-rated field, at least we hope so for star Ryan Reynolds whose Green Lantern was mauled by critics. Then again, the David Dobkin film isn't exactly being hailed as a winner by critics thus far either.
