Hank Bradford, head writer for “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers,” died Jan. 18 in Los Angeles of congestive heart failure, his family said. He was 88.
Bradford served as Carson’s head writer from 1970-75.
“As head writer on The Tonight Show, he was admired and beloved by his fellow writers for both his pitch-perfect sense of humor and his relatively-sane leadership style in a job (and profession) which tended toward the weird and chaotic,” Bradford’s family said in a prepared obituary. “Above his desk at The Tonight Show was a sign that read: ‘It left here funny.’”
Bradford later served as head writer for “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers” between 1986 and 1987. He also wrote episodes for “Mash” and “Three’s Company.”

Fox’s “Son of Zorn” may be the most original idea of any TV show this fall.
The animated “Zorn,” voiced by Jason Sudeikis, is the self-described “Defender of Zephyria, Conqueror of the tribes of Agon, decapitator of the dark herdsmen of Grith. Now he’s moving to Orange County, where he hopes to reconnect with his estranged 17-year-old son Alan (Johnny Pemberton) and his ex-wife Edie (Cheryl Hines). Throwing a wrench in that plan: Edie’s new fiance, the sensitive psychology professor Craig (Tim Meadows). Realizing his son hasn’t grown up the way he’d like, Zorn rents an apartment, gets a job and decides to stick around in suburbia.
For our new podcast “Turn It On,” IndieWire talked to “Son of Zorn” showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna and director Eric Appel about the challenges of producing the animated/live-action comedy hybrid, and how the show isn’t as different as you’d think.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Season 1, Episode 5, “The Vulture”
Directed by Jason Ensler
Written by Laura McCreary
Airs Tuesdays at 8:30pm Est on Fox
This week Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues to establish its footing and provides entertainment for audiences through its silly nature. The opening out of context scenes continue to deliver as they grow more ridiculous each week. “The Vulture” is a strong episode for a number of different reasons, the most important being the way it utilises all of the characters. Another reason this episode is so entertaining is its strong use of character development throughout. Each week Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues to focus on the lessons Jake is discovering and this week he learns the importance of teamwork. This is something that can be seen in a number of work-based sitcoms but Brooklyn Nine-Nine does a good job of constructing it uniquely and creatively.

Another TV staffing season is coming to a close as, one by one, writers rooms of new and returning series are convening to work on the 2011-12 orders. Overall, "it was a healthy staffing season," one industry insider said, while another was lamenting the system, in which prospective writers meet on 80+ pilots in the run-up to the upfronts, only a quarter of which would make it to series and actually hire scribes. Of the new series, comedies New Girl on Fox, Two Broke Girls on CBS and Apartment 23 on ABC were sought after by writers this year. Joining New Girl creator Liz Meriwether are Joe Port and Joe Wiseman as co-executive producers as well as J.J. Philbin and Josh Malmuth. Three established comedy writer-producers will work alongside Two Broke Girls co-creator/executive producer Michael Patrick King -- Greg Malins, Jhoni Marchinko and Michelle Nader, all as consulting producers.
