A dog that removes anxiety from its human’s life by killing the people who cause her stress may be a heightened, fantastical look at emotional-support animals, but because there is now such a wide range of small-screen content depicting such therapeutic resources, one does not have to represent all. Education about them is mixing with entertainment.
A killer emotional-support dog is at the center of Blumhouse Television’s latest “Into the Dark” installment for Hulu, “Good Boy.” But even this horror satire may expose an audience to the idea of emotional-support dogs for the first time. That is why, according to Sheila Goffe, vice president of government relations, American Kennel Club, no matter the genre or format, the most important thing when depicting such dogs is to do so accurately for their classification.

Hannah Simone and Elizabeth Hurley have been cast in the lead roles of the untitled CBS comedy pilot from Corinne Kingsbury, John Francis Daley, and Jonathan Goldstein, Variety has learned. Both women will also serve as producers on the show in addition to starring.
In the show, when Penelope’s (Simone) career takes off at exactly the same time as her husband Josh’s (not yet cast), they call on Penelope’s young single mom, Georgia (Hurley), to help raise their son, but what they find is Georgia needs more raising than their kid.
Penelope is further described as a smart, hard-working producer at a sports TV network, wife to airline pilot Josh, and mother of their challenging toddler, Levi. Georgia is said to be in her late 40s but looks and acts much younger. Fun-loving and a bit immature, she doesn’t have the best judgment, especially when it comes to men.

New Girl alumna Hannah Simone and The Royals‘ Elizabeth Hurley have been tapped as the leads a CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot from Fam and In the Dark creator Corinne Kingsbury, Spider-Man: Homecoming writers John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, Trill TV, Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios. Simone and Hurley will also serve as producers on the pilot, which vetrean multi-cam director Pam Fryman is set to direct and executive produce.
The semi-autobiographical comedy is about a daughter and her mom. When Penelope’s (Simone) career takes off at exactly the same time as her husband’s, they call on Penelope’s young single mom, Georgia comes to help and turns her well-ordered world upside down.
Hurley’s Georgia is fun-loving and a bit immature; she doesn’t have the best judgment, especially when it comes to men. Georgia had Penelope when she was 17, and although she was a warm and loving single mom, their roles have reversed a bit now that Penelope is an adult. When Georgia becomes the babysitter to Penelope’s toddler, she might get a chance to redeem herself, but then again chaos tends to follow her.
Kingsbury co-wrote the script with her husband, Daley, and his writing partner, Goldstein. The three executive produce with Fryman, Kapital Entertainment’s Kaplan and Dana Honor and TrillTV’s Trilling.
Simone, who has been in demand since she came off her seven-year run on New Girl, starred in back-to-back pilots for ABC, the Untitled Hannah Simone project, which she also co-created and executive produced, and Greatest American Hero. Simone is repped by UTA, Alpita Patel Management and Ziffren Brittenham.
Hurley recently played Morgan le Fay in Season 3 of Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu. Previously, she starred as Queen Helena in the E! series The Royals and recurred on the CW’s Gossip Girl. On the film side, Hurley appeared opposite Gerard Depardieu in Viktor. She is repped by UTA.

CBS has picked up three more multi-camera pilots and one single-camera comedy pilot for the 2020-2021 season.
The first hails from writers and executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, the co-creators of “Will & Grace.” Their CBS pilot is titled “Please Hold for Frankie Wolfe.” Wolfe is described as an unfiltered, irreverent, powerful businesswoman with no personal life. When Frankie’s impossibly fragile and neurotic sister, Tommie, abandons Quincy – an incredibly bright inner-city child who Tommie attempted to foster – Frankie is faced with the choice of taking him in or casting him back out. Universal Television will produce the project.
The next pilot is an untitled comedy from executive producers and writers Corinne Kingsbury, John Francis Daley, and Jonathan Goldstein. The CW's dramedy In the Dark has been given a Season 3, ahead of its Season 2 airing. Here's everything we know so far...
In the Dark was one of 13 currently-running CW TV shows that got the good news it would be getting another season last week. The dramedy about a 20-something blind woman investigating the apparent murder of one of her best friends, has aired one season on The CW, with another already ordered, but not yet having aired. This makes the In the Dark Season 3 confirmation particularly interesting.
In the Dark first hit The CW as a midseason premiere last spring, ending in June 2019. Created by Corinne Kingsbury, it stars Perry Mattfield as Murphy Mason, a hard-drinking, smoking blind woman who, when she stumbles upon the body of the drug-dealing teen who once saved her from a mugger, becomes committed to finding out what happened to him.

Created by Corinne Kingsbury, it stars Perry Mattfield as Murphy Mason, a hard-drinking, smoking blind woman who, when she stumbles upon the body of the drug-dealing teen who once saved her from a mugger, becomes committed to finding out what happened to him.

CBS hosted a special panel titled “Impact Storytelling” during the TCA press tour on Wednesday held on the ’80s-drenched set of track lighting and marbled gaudiness of the forthcoming CBS All Access Why Women Kill. The setting is appropriate because the panelists are killing it when it comes to their shows. Michelle Paradise (Star Trek: Discovery), Michelle King, Liz Feldman (Dead To Me) and Corinne Kingsbury (In the Dark) spoke about their shows and the obstacles they have encountered in an industry largely populated by men.

The multi-camera comedy was launched without much fanfare in midseason. The series, which hails from creator Corinne Kingsbury, Kapital Entertainment and CBS Television Studios, had a quiet run, averaging a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating (Live+7).
In Fam, a young woman’s (Dobrev) dreams of an upstanding life with her new fiancé (Bell) and his family are dashed when her younger trainwreck half-sister comes to live with her to escape their trainwreck of a father.
Odessa Adlon, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Sheryl Lee Ralph also starred.
Kingsbury executive produced with Kapital Entertainment’s Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor as well as Wendi Trilling via TrillTV. Kapital co-produced with CBS TV Studios.

The CW has announced a flurry of renewals.
Three of the network’s freshman shows, “All American,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In The Dark,” will return for second seasons, as well as “The 100,” which gets a seventh outing. This means that all five of The CW’s first-year shows, including the previously-renewed “Legacies” and “Charmed,” have been picked up for a sophomore run, a first for the network.
The sixth season of “The 100” is set to premiere on April 30, and will see the characters descending to a new planet after being frozen in stasis pods on a spaceship for decades, after escaping an uninhabitable Earth.

“In the Dark” isn’t subtle about wanting to be, as the CW would put it, daring and defiant. Corinne Kingsbury’s new drama brands its heroine so aggressively as an anti-heroine that hardly a scene goes by without a reminder that Murphy (Perry Mattfeld) is a surly alcoholic with a taste for one-night stands and crippling emotional immaturity. She is also blind, a fact that the show alternately treats with respect and as an extra winking twist on TV’s default sighted protagonists. What’s more, Murphy embarks on a potentially dangerous mission to find out what happened to her friend Tyson (Thamela Mpumlwana), a teenager who once saved her from a horrific mugging.
Mattfeld does her best to cut through Murphy’s stubborn disaffection in order to find the stung woman underneath, even though the scripts barely give her any room to do it in between scowling cigarette breaks.

"In the Dark", is the new episodic comedy/drama series, created by Corinne Kingsbury, starring Perry Mattfeld as an "irreverent blind woman" caught up in a murder mystery, premiering April 4, 2019 on The CW:

Her only two friends, 'Jess' (Brooke Markham), her understanding roommate and 'Tyson', a teenage street hustler who saved her from a violent mugging. Out for a walk with her guide dog, 'Pretzel' (Levi), she stumbles upon a body, she is certain is Tyson, but it disappears before the police arrive. If you’re a TV critic, you wondered why CW’s In the Dark did not cast an actress who is sight disabled for the lead role of a complicated young woman who cannot see, who works at her parents’ guide-dog school, and who is the only witness to the murder of her friend.
If you’re a dog person, you wondered why they didn’t cast an actual guide dog to play Pretzel, the woman’s guide dog, instead casting a canine actor named Levi.
That’s because, explained consultant Lorri Bernson, who is blind and came to TCA with her new-ish guide dog Captain who led her through maze of chairs on stage set up for the cast and producers, a guide dog would mis-interpret multiple takes of a scene in a bad way.

Unconventional families are as standard a sitcom premise as any, so it feels fitting that “Fam” is as standard as they come. CBS’ new multi-camera comedy introduces newly engaged couple Clem (former “The Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev) and Jay (Tone Bell), and then almost as quickly, Clem’s surly half-sister Shannon (Odessa Adlon), who’s broken into their apartment after dropping out of high school. Clem and Shannon haven’t spoken in years, mostly because Clem and her estranged father (a surprise Gary Cole) haven’t spoken in years, but Clem sees too much of herself in Shannon to ignore her completely. She therefore invites her to live with them so Shannon can sort her life out — or at least that’s the hope.
“Fam” — so named because, as per this CBS version of a 16 year-old, “no one says ‘family’ anymore” — doesn’t push much harder to find new angles beyond its setup.

CBS is using a different approach to unveiling its winter scheduling plans this year — by genre. After announcing its midseason unscripted slate yesterday, the network today is focusing on comedy.
Coming off the schedule in January/February are freshmen Murphy Brown and Happy Together; coming on are new comedy Fam and returning Man With a Plan.
CBS so far has given a Back 9 pickup for a full-season order to one new fall comedy, The Neighborhood. Like all current broadcast sitcom reboots, Murphy Brown was designed for a limited run and will wrap its freshman run with 13 episodes though its ratings delivery has been somewhat disappointing.
For Happy Together, starring Damon Wayans Jr., CBS has opted not to order additional episodes beyond the original 13. Per CBS’ standard Mo the past few years, the comedy is not canceled and will remain in contention for next season.

The “Murphy Brown” revival and “Happy Together” won’t receive additional episode orders for their freshman seasons on CBS.
The Candice Bergen-led sitcom’s return this fall was always intended for a 13-episode run, while the new Damon Wayans comedy has not been canceled and is still in contention for the 2019-20 slate, an individual with knowledge of the decision tells TheWrap.

Dark Cargo joins two other pilots at YouTube, comedies The Edge of Seventeen, based on the critically praised film of the same name, and It’s a Man’s World.

Bob Kushell is out as co-showrunner for CBS’ midseason sitcom “Fam,” ahead of its debut, for “inappropriate language in the workplace.”
CBS declined to comment, but an insider with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that Kushell is no longer with the show. TV Line was first to report the news of Kushell’s departure for workplace misconduct. Representatives for Kushell did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
The comedy starring Nina Dobrev and Tone Bell is set to premiere at midseason. Corinne Kingsbury, who created the show, will now be the sole showrunner on the series.

Bob Kushell, executive producer/showrunner of CBS’ upcoming midseason comedy Fam starring Nina Dobrev, has exited the series. I hear he was dismissed following a complaint that he had used insensitive language in the writers room. Word is that the comment in question was not of a sexual harassment nature, but it was deemed inappropriate.
With CBS under scrutiny in the past few months with a number of high-profile exits over misconduct allegations, from CEO Les Moonves to former NCIS: New Orleans showrunner Brad Kern, the network acted decisively, removing Kushell. CBS declined comment.
The move comes with three episodes left to film in Fam‘s 13-episode order. Creator/executive producer Corinne Kingsbury is taking lead, with comedy veterans Joe Port and Joe Wiseman getting elevated to executive producers.

“Fam” stars Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell and Odessa Adlon in a blended-family comedy about a woman who seeks a perfect life with her fiance’s family only to have her plans up-ended when her wild 16-year-old sister moves in.
Kushell’s quick dismissal reflects the heightened sensitivity throughout the entertainment industry to allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct in workplace settings. The specifics around Kushell’s firing are still unclear. CBS has yet to set a premiere date for the multicamera comedy.

Mad Men alum Rich Sommer has been cast in a lead role opposite Perry Mattfeld on the new CW midseason drama series In the Dark, from CBS TV Studios and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films. He will play Dean, replacing Austin Nichols, who played the role in the pilot.
Written by Corinne Kingsbury and directed by Michael Showalter, In the Dark centers on Murphy (Mattfeld), a flawed and irreverent woman who just happens to be blind and is the only “witness” to the murder of her drug-dealing friend, Tyson. When the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at Breaking Blind — the guide-dog school owned by her overprotective parents.
