Survivor has aired 44 seasons and has been on the air for almost 23 years. Throughout the CBS reality competition series’ run, there have been plenty of epic highs and a handful of disastrous lows as producers introduce new elements to the game. Some have completely changed the series for the better, while other Survivor twists long to be forgotten by the show’s fans.

We’re starting our ranking of the five worst Survivor twists by taking you back to the show’s twenty-first season, Nicaragua. It’s believed that The Challenge: USA champ Danny McCray picked recent winner Tori Deal as a teammate in World Championship because she’s his wife Kiki’s favorite competitor. However, Kiki seemingly threw shade at Tori in a recent tweet.

The Challenge: USA champ Danny McCray’s wife Kiki is nearly a cast member, as he frequently mentions her. After The Challenge: World Championship Season 1 Episode 4 aired, she defended her husband, who was frustrated with his partner Tori Deal for not wanting to make big moves.
Initially, they seemed as one of the strongest pairs but the two are clearly not on the same page when it comes to gameplay.

When Survivor returned to air following a 16-month post-pandemic delay, it ushered in a brand new, twist-tastic era: A 26-day game, more diverse casting and smaller tribes weren’t even the half of it. But when Season 43 kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 21 (at 8/7c on CBS), viewers and its castaways are in for some big changes.
While host Jeff Probst has been very clear about which aspects of this new era are sticking around — the shorter game, small tribes, risk/reward dilemmas, earning the merge and Shot in the Dark are all here to stay — he’s put the kibosh on...

We’re only a few weeks out from the “Survivor 42” finale where Maryanne Oketch clinched the 1 million prize arguably because of her Final Tribal Council revelation that she had kept the only secret in the game truly a secret: her unused hidden immunity idol. Jaws dropped on the jury and the players that may have otherwise been inclined to vote for Mike Turner to win instead chose Maryanne as the “sole Survivor.” Now, as we forward look to “Survivor 43” this fall, we want to know what you think about the advantages, twists and challenges currently at play in “Survivor” and which, if any, should stick around for the upcoming season.

As the old saying goes, once you reach the top, the only way to go is down. Perhaps that’s a part of the reason why so many “Survivor” winners never returned to play again. There have been 39 winners over the past 41 seasons, and of those a whopping 27 played multiple times. Thus, over the past two decades, 12 “Survivor” champions took home the 1 million check and never looked back — or were never asked back. See the full list below.
Several winners found success on their second go-around, like Amber Brkich (“All-Stars”) and Parvati Shallow (“Micronesia”). For others it took a long while to get there, like Rob Mariano (“Redemption Island”), who didn’t prevail until his fourth season.
Some of the most recent champs like Chris Underwood (Season 38), Tommy Sheehan (Season 39) and Erika Casupanan (Season 41) haven’t had a chance to return to the game quite yet, but we’re optimistic...

For the second week in a row, the remaining castaways on “Survivor 42” took out one of the game’s strongest players. Drea Wheeler finally met her demise after collecting just about every possible advantage in the game up to that point, including a secret amulet, a Knowledge is Power advantage and an extra vote. The 34-year-old fitness consultant went out in rather spectacular fashion, using up two of her three advantages. Do you think Drea deserved to get the boot in this episode? Vote in our poll below, which does not include immunity winner Jonathan Young or Do Or Die survivor Lindsay Dolashewich.

And just like that, the torch has been lit on “Survivor’s” 42nd season. (Does that make you feel old?) Jeff Probst is back as host of the Emmy-winning series, and this time around he’s brought 18 of his newest friends. The castaways come from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life as they try to outwit, outplay and outlast in the beautiful islands of Fiji. The ultimate champion will take home a cool $1 million prize, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves. In Wednesday’s two-hour premiere, viewers met the new players and found out who had the unfortunate title of being the first person voted out of “Survivor 42.”

From lamb to lion to queen, Survivor has its first female winner since 2017.
On Survivor Season 41 Episode 13, Erika Casupanan won the title and the million in a Final Three against Xander Hastings and Deshawn Radden.
It was a long, hard road to the end, but it was a thrilling, twisty journey from beginning to end.
(This review contains spoilers from Survivor: Cook Islands, Survivor China, Survivor: San Juan Del Sur, and Survivor: Edge Of Extinction)
Many of the castaways have indicated this throughout the season, but the sentiment that kept coming up was, "I'm just happy to be here."
Even Jeff seemed to have a spring in his step. When the season began, it felt like we were getting some normalcy back. Survivor is a luxury that we certainly don't need, but it's something so enjoyable and steady and has been a part of television for the last 20 years.

After a diverse season full of countless twists (and one controversial hourglass smash), “Survivor 41” came to an end on Wednesday with one player winning the $1 million prize. Heading into the Season 41 finale, only five of the original 18 castaways were still in the game: Ricard Foye, Erika Casupanan, Xander Hastings, Deshawn Radden and Heather Aldret. Gold Derby’s racetrack odds favored Ricard to win it all, but did things go according to our predictions? And did a hidden immunity idol finally get played for the first time all season?

For the first time since Season 1, the winner of “Survivor 41” will be announced on the island. Let that sink in. There won’t be a cheering studio audience, no emotional family member hugs, not even a live reunion with all of the castaways. Jeff Probst spoke candidly with TVLine about the decision to scrap the live element of the finale and do everything in Fiji this time around, with one of his biggest takeaways being that he misses the “big energy” of having fans in attendance.
“There are pros and cons to both,” said the four-time Emmy-winning host about a live finale vs. a pre-taped finale. “I definitely miss the big energy of the live audience and seeing all the family members of our players. That kind of excitement is very unique because it’s more of an event. But what was really cool about revealing the winner in the jungle was the intimacy.

Over the past 40 seasons of “Survivor,” men have won 25 times while women have only prevailed 15 times. (See the “Survivor” winners list.) The past six cycles in a row have all resulted in male champions, with the most recent woman winner being Sarah Lacina in Season 34. With the Season 41 finale set for Wednesday night, all eyes are on whether one of the last two females on the island (Erika Casupanan or Heather Aldret) can break the curse this year. Or will one of the three men prevail instead?

After being voted out of “Survivor 41” in the season’s penultimate episode, Danny McCray knew he would face tough questions from his one-time ally Shan Smith at Ponderosa. However, even he admitted that their ultimate meeting “may have been a little hotter than expected” (watch above). Shan and fellow eliminee Liana Wallace were upset with Danny for breaking their so-called Black alliance, resulting in the three of them being voted out back-to-back-to-back (only Deshawn Radden still remains in the game).

Danny blatantly asked Shan if she told Ricard Foye that the group was planning on voting him out, and Shan fired back, “I gave Ricard a heads up. That was my common courtesy to my number one.” She then added, “I was still locked in with my number four,” referring to the four African-American players.

For weeks, many “Survivor 41” viewers have suspected there might be something hot and heavy cooking in Fiji (and not the rice), and now Xander Hastings has confirmed he does indeed have a crush on Liana Wallace. “I’ve said multiple times that I think she’s so attractive,” the 21-year-old Florida app developer revealed in a deleted scene from a recent episode (watch above). “If she knew how I actually felt about her, then she’d [realize] it’s all the strategy that makes her think that I hate her.”

After successfully navigating the game’s new twists and turns, only six castaways remain on “Survivor 41.” Four of the six are original Luvu tribemates: Danny McCray, Deshawn Radden, Erika Casupanan and Heather Aldret, while Ricard Foye is the last remaining Ua player and Xander Hastings is the final Yase member. On Wednesday night, “Survivor” introduced a brand new wrinkle to CBS’s 20-year-old reality TV show: the “Do or Die” twist. Host Jeff Probst explained to the Final 7 castaways that the latest immunity challenge, an endurance competition in which they had to balance a ball on a tiny wooden holder, came with its own special rules. If a player competed in the challenge and was the first person to drop their ball, they would have to play a guessing game at tribal council with potentially disastrous results. Anyone who didn’t want to risk their game could choose to sit out of the comp. What did you think of first-ever “Do or Die” twist? Vote in our “Survivor 41” poll below.

The Final 7 castaways on “Survivor 41” were in disarray after last week’s shocking elimination of Shan Smith. Her fellow alliance members Ricard Foye, Danny McCray and Deshawn Radden had just turned on Shan and Liana Wallace, which left the door open for one of the underdogs — Heather Aldret, Erika Casupanan and Xander Hastings — to pull through. When we offered up our first power rankings for “Survivor 41,” Jeff Probst had just dropped the merge challenge bombshell on the remaining 12 castaways. Then, Shan Smith had positioned herself to win with multiple advantages in her pocket, the foundation of a powerful alliance, and was getting a heavily favorable edit every episode. Now, after Wednesday’s tenth episode, Shan is out and only seven are left to claim the million dollars.
Below we roll out our second “Survivor 41” power rankings of the season, and with our previous frontrunner sitting on the jury, control of the game is up for grabs. Ricard Foye may have made the power move and Deshawn Radden might be the snake, but is there a bigger threat lurking in the shadows? One of the most buzzed-about players on “Survivor 41,” Shan Smith from Washington, D.C., was eliminated from Wednesday’s 10th episode in an epic blindside. The 34-year-old pastor went out with a bang as she praised Bff Ricard Foye (saying she’d vote for him to win the $1 million) and blasted alliance member Deshawn Radden (whom she called a “snake”). Shan is now the second player in as many weeks to go home with a hidden immunity idol in their pocket, following Naseer Muttalif last week.

“Jeff missed a big opportunity,” exclaims Gold Derby’s Marcus James Dixon after “Survivor’s” unexpected double elimination. He joins Kevin Jacobson and Matt Noble in our weekly Gold Derby “Survivor 41” slugfest. Marcus explains, “With the twist of separating them into two tribes, Jeff should have asked them to drop their buffs and said, ‘You are no longer merged, for one week.’” Watch the lively discussion on Season 41, Episode 9, titled “Who’s Who in the Zoo,” in our video recap above.

The episode saw the merged tribe, split in two at the immunity challenge. After the challenge, the two groups head to different beaches and separate tribal councils. While this twist was last used only two seasons ago, Marcus is correct that it acts as a temporary un-merging. And it caused havoc for fan favorites Nasseer Muttalif and Evvie Jagoda, who were voted out of the game.

Liana Wallace may hate Xander Hastings‘ face, but “Survivor 41” viewers can’t get enough of it. Evvie Jagoda is happy with her “Survivor” experience, but isn’t exactly pleased with how she went out. Naseer Muttalif was on the wrong end of a blindside on this week’s episode of “Survivor 41,” being voted out with a hidden Immunity Idol in his pocket. Episode 8 of “Survivor 41” proved that despite all the idols and advantages that make up the game these days, sometimes the biggest conflicts come from the players themselves. “Look how much drama we got out of a papaya,” says Kevin Jacobsen in a new slugfest, referencing Ricard Foye eating a piece of papaya at camp after already winning a Reward Challenge for food, and getting in trouble for it. Fellow Gold Derby contributor Matt Noble agrees that it was refreshing to see some “classic ‘Survivor’ tribal drama” in this episode as opposed to a flurry of advantages and idols. The jury phase of “Survivor 41” began in Episode 8, with 47-year-old teacher Tiffany Seely being booted by the majority. Tiffany was part of the three-person Yase alliance with Evvie Jagoda and Xander Hastings, both of whom were protected by winning immunity and having an immunity idol, respectively. This made Tiffany the easy target to take out, but according to a new poll released just after last week’s episode, fans don’t think she should have been eliminated.
Shan Smith earned the most votes for who Gold Derby readers thought should have been voted out, at a whopping 43% of the tally. The self-professed mafia pastor struggled to maintain her close relationships with her allies in Episode 8, confronting Ricard Foye about eating a piece of papaya and making Deshawn Radden feel like his voice didn’t matter on multiple occasions. Episode 7 of “Survivor 41” was one for the ages. With seven of the 12 remaining castaways safe from elimination, it was utter chaos figuring out who to send out. After advantages played, new alliances forged and a wildly unpredictable Tribal Council, it was confident law student Sydney Segal who met her demise in a very close 5-4-3 vote. In a new poll posted last week, Gold Derby asked readers to pick who they thought deserved to be eliminated this episode, and the people have spoken.
Sydney earned the most votes for who users thought deserved to be booted, amassing 27% of the vote. Among other castaways eligible to be voted out, Deshawn Radden earned the next highest amount of votes at 9%. The Yase alliance of Evvie Jagoda, Tiffany Seely and Xander Hastings conspired to target Deshawn and placed three votes on him, but they couldn’t convince anyone else to join them.

On “Survivor,” there’s nothing worse than being outnumbered at the merge, and that’s exactly what’s happened to the Yase three, aka Xander Hastings, Evvie Jagoda and Tiffany Seely. When their fourth Yase member, Liana Wallace, ditched them for the Campout alliance, that left the yellow trio with a huge numbers disadvantage on a merged tribe of 12 people. The merge episode of “Survivor 41” was one for the record books. For the first time in the show’s two decades on the air, six people won an immunity challenge and were told by Jeff Probst that they were safe, only to have their immunity undone by an hourglass twist that reversed time. Flash-forward to tribal council, where one of those people, Sydney Segal, ended up being voted out. Needless to say, she’s not a fan of the hourglass twist.
“I mean, it’s not even a twist — it’s a lie,” Sydney says in her exit interview with EW. “We’re told one thing and then something else happens. And I think it achieved exactly what it intended to achieve. That challenge was meant for strong players to win. And then that hourglass twist was intended to get a strong player out of the game. Episode 7 of “Survivor 41” ended in the most dramatic Tribal Council of the season to date. On last week’s sixth episode of “Survivor 41,” Jeff Probst dropped the bombshell of the merge challenge on the 12 remaining castaways, resulting in half of them believing themselves safe at the next tribal council and half of them facing an individual immunity challenge to determine their fate. The not-quite-merge set the stage for Erika Casupanan, chosen by a majority of her former Luvu tribe mates to go to Exile Island, to possibly “change history” by flipping the script on the merge challenge and switching the immune to vulnerable, and the vulnerable to immune.
But before we see Erika makes her historic decision on the seventh episode, it’s time to assess where every player is at in the game and rank their chances at becoming the 41st sole Survivor. Below we roll out our first power rankings of the season, taking into account strategy, relationships, and of course the notorious “winner’s edit.

It was a merge episode to remember on “Survivor 41,” for better or for worse. The sixth episode of the season featured the three tribes merging as they would on a normal season, but not before host Jeff Probst revealed a big twist that was “needlessly complicated,” as Kevin Jacobsen explains in a new “Survivor” slugfest with colleagues Marcus James Dixon and Matt Noble. The twist resulted in a rare episode where no one went home by the end of the night. Watch our thoughts on how it all played out in the video chat above.

At the end of last week’s episode of “Survivor 41,” Jeff Probst offered a never-before-seen twist to the current inhabitant of Exile Island, Erika Casupanan. If she wanted to “go back in time and change history,” she could reverse the results of the merge challenge by smashing a prop hourglass. That would result in the winners of the challenge now being up for elimination and the losers now being safe. Since Erika was eligible to be voted out, viewers assumed she’d have no choice but to use the hammer when the show returned for Episode 7.
In fact, our reader’s poll results were fairly decisive when asked whether Erika should smash the hourglass. Here they are:

Xavier Prather, the historic first African-American winner of “Big Brother,” has tweeted a two-word response to “Survivor’s” all-Black alliance: “Everybody eats.”
His comment is a direct reference to the Cookout, the name of his “BB23” alliance from this summer that dominated the game, resulting in all six members making it to the end and Xavier winning the $750,000 grand prize. Now a similar alliance has been created on “Survivor 41” consisting of the four remaining Black players: Shantel “Shan” Smith, Liana Wallace, Deshawn Radden and Danny McCray.

While they didn’t give an official name to their group, some “Survivor” fans took to social media to call the new alliance the Campout, a clever callback to the Cookout.
