Screen Film Summit: Sky Movies boss Ian Lewis has said that Sky does not see Svod services Netflix and Amazon’s LoveFilm as competitors in the UK.
“We don’t see Netflix as a direct competitor,” he told Screen Film Summit audience at the BFI Southbank.
“People need to remember that in terms of VOD services in the UK, Sky Movies was the first and we’ve expanded our service over the years.”
Lewis highlighted expansion at Sky including tech innovations such as the launch of Sky Go, a number of new branded movies channels including Sky Movies 007 and Sky Christmas and film production investment.
“The growth in the VOD market makes it more complicated for the customer,” he continued. “But it has also been stimulating as we’ve become more focused,” he continued.

London - Movie studios licensing their content to BSkyB and making their films available earlier to subscribers of its movie services can create a virtuous cycle that benefits their U.K. theatrical and DVD business, Sky Movies director Ian Lewis said here Wednesday. Speaking at the Peve Entertainment 2013 conference at the British Museum, he said a licensing deal for all James Bond films that allowed his firm to launch a Sky Movies 007 channel late last year helped create excitement around the theatrical release of Skyfall, which set British box-office records. Plus, the availability of Skyfall on Sky Movies

BSkyB gets licence to air all 007 films in high definition from October after it pipped ITV to one-year deal
The name's Movies. Sky Movies. Licence to show quite a lot of James Bond movies.
All of them, in fact, after BSkyB announced on Tuesday it was launching an entire high definition channel dedicated to the Bond canon called Sky Movies 007. No, that's not where it will be on the Epg.
Sky bought the rights to the Bond back catalogue in a deal with MGM in April this year, bringing to an end ITV's almost 40-year hold on the franchise. For a period, at least.
The high definition channel, which will launch on 5 October and be on air for a month, is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first Bond film, Dr No, and the release of the latest, Skyfall, starring Daniel Craig and directed by Sam Mendes.

Daniel Craig returns to the big screen later this year in the twenty-third James Bond film, Skyfall, and after the release of the first two full-length trailers last week, the anticipation has been raised that much higher.
In tandem with the films’ 50th Anniversary, and coinciding rather nicely with the upcoming release of Skyfall, Sky Movies have announced that this October, they will be launching a Bond-dedicated channel – Sky Movies 007 HD – that will feature the full twenty-two-film back catalogue, as well as two non-eon titles with 1967’s Casino Royale and 1983’s Never Say Never Again.
All the films have recently been restored and given the HD treatment – and will be released in a 22-film collection later this year on Blu-ray – and will be available for Sky customers free of adverts, in glorious high definition.

Satellite broadcaster breaks ITV's near 40-year hold on franchise with deal to show all the films from October
BSkyB has broken ITV's almost 40-year hold on James Bond films, striking a deal to air the full 22-strong franchise in high definition.
Sky Movies has struck a deal with MGM to air all the Bond films, including Daniel Craig's latest outing in Skyfall which is due to premiere on pay-tv next spring, from October.

In time for Saint Patrick's Day Irish A-Lister Liam Neeson has been named Ireland's greatest actor. The 59-year-old Ballymena-born actor saw off stiff competition in two separate polls for Sky Movies and Lovefilm, which also had Irish favorites Colin Farrell and Pierce Brosnan in the running. The go-to leading man for the world's top directors, Neeson's roles have included his unforgettable turns in the leads in Schindler's List and Michael Collins, the Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace and as the voice of Aslan in the Narnia franchise. The Sky Movies poll - held in association with its Irish actors season to be broadcast on Saturday and Sunday - saw Neeson win a whopping fifth of all the votes. Liam Neeson, who is about to be back on the big screen in Wrath of the Titans (March 30) and Battleship (April 11), has been voted Ireland and the UK's favourite Irish actor.
He will also appear in this summer's The Dark Knight Rises, in what's likely to be a cameo role - probably a flashback - as Ra's al Ghul, the archvillain from Batman Begins.

Competition Commission says satellite broadcaster enjoys too much exclusive control over pay-tv movie rights
BSkyB will be ordered to weaken its stranglehold on Hollywood films on pay-tv after an investigation by the Competition Commission.
In a provisional decision published on Friday morning, the commission said BSkyB's contracts with the six major Hollywood studios present a significant barrier to entry to potential competitors, including BT and Virgin Media.
The industry watchdog ruled that the prices charged by Sky to Virgin are too high, meaning Virgin cannot make a business selling films to its customers.
One third of the UK's 15m pay-tv households subscribe to Sky Movies, as the network enjoys exclusivity on many Hollywood blockbusters for 15 months.
Inception, Tron Legacy, Shrek Forever After and Sex and the City 2 are among the blockbusters about to become Sky's exclusive property on pay-tv in the UK.

Syfy have had success putting twists on beloved children’s stories in recent years, from the miniseries Tin Man (based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard Of Oz saga) to Alice (based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland books), so nobody was surprised when Syfy announced their intention to give Jm Barrie’s Peter Pan a bonkers reinvention called Neverland last year. And now some production photos have appeared, courtesy of BSkyB, who will be premiering Neverland in the UK later this year.
Neverland retells the famous story, but as a curiously altered prequel. In this interpretation, set in turn-of-the-century London, Peter (Charlie Rowe) is an orphan living with a gang of pick-pocketers led by Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) — in shades of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. After the boys steal a treasure with magical powers for Hook, they’re transported to the realm of Neverland, to be confronted...

You may remember earlier this month we brought you news on a special Sky Movies Christmas viewer vote to see what films Sky would broadcast on the Sky Movie Christmas Channel/HD. Well the results are in – and they make for interesting reading… Gory gag fest Zombieland and bromantic comedy The Hangover are second only to It’s a Wonderful Life as the UK’s favourite choices for movie viewing this Christmas!
Over 48,000 people voted to decide the Christmas and Boxing Day schedule for the Christmas Channel, and while it will come as little surprise that the Frank Capra favourite took the top spot, the results reveal an appetite for alternatives to festive classics with Zombieland and The Hangover coming in second and third place respectively. According to the press release:

Update: The pay-tv giant wants to hear pitches for movies and two-part miniseries as it moves back into original feature production. Sky wants to co-produce three big event TV movies each year. The problem, it says, will be finding UK projects of sufficient scale and quality – a problem which Warner Bros also faces developing British blockbusters. Brit producers tend to think small-scale and intimate. “We’re looking for big exclusive events that can add value to the movie subscription,” Ian Lewis, director of Sky Movies tells me. “A lot of the projects we’ve sifted already were easy to turn down. “We’re looking for the kinds of stories, cast and production values that we would see on the movie channels.” Sky Movies HD has announced the TV giant’s first foray back into original feature production since the late 90s. Neverland is a Peter Pan origin story starring Rhys Ifans...

We’ve received information this morning that Sky Movies HD are going to create their first ever original feature length movie called Neverland. The movie has been commissioned by Sky Movies HD to create a two part feature length prequel inspired by the story of Peter Pan. It’ll be two 90 minute movies which will air in 2011 on Sky Movies Premiere HD.
Neverland is set to star Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel, Bob Hoskins, and Charlie Rowe.
Synopsis: Raised on the streets of turn-of-the-century London, orphaned Peter (Rowe) and his pals survive by their fearless wits as cunning young pickpockets. Now, they’ve been rounded up by their mentor Jimmy Hook (Ifans) to snatch a priceless—some believe, magical—treasure which transports them to another world. Neverland is a realm of white jungles and legendary mysteries of eternal youth, where unknown friends and enemies snatched from time welcome the new travelers with both excitement and trepidation.

The big apple. The city that never sleeps. The city so nice they named it twice. Whatever name it goes by, New York has been a mainstay of cinema and continues to enchant audiences young and old. It’s defined the careers of filmmakers as diverse as Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Spike Lee and has provided an unforgettable landscape for every genre from family musicals (42nd Street, West Side Story) to adult dramas (The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy), action blockbusters (Spider-Man, King Kong) to cheesy comedies (Ghostbusters, Home Alone 2) and now the Empire city has been named the most cinematic city in the world. Well, come on – what could top it?

London -- Sky Television and U.K. production banner Chelsea Films, part of the exhibition and distribution company Curzon Artificial Eye Group, have pacted to release the Tilda Swinton-starrer "Julia" in theaters and on Sky's pay-per-view service simultaneously.
The deal marks the first English language release to break the historical release window pattern and go into theaters on the same night as being available on pay television.
Sky previously partnered with Curzon Artificial Eye in February this year to do the same for Fatih Akin's "The Edge of Heaven."
According to Sky it was deemed a huge success. It means smaller, niche titles benefit from a bigger marketing spend with Sky on board than they might otherwise enjoy, Sky claims.
Directed by Erick Zonca and Camille Natta, "Julia" will rollout theatrically in five Curzon Cinema sites and eight City Screen sites as well as other regional sites in December.
