This week talk about accusations of Disney gouging its customers. We talk about viral reports of family trips costing over $13,000, reports of the $200 lightsabers from Galaxy’s Edge breaking down, and the usual grousing about Genie Plus and upcharges. In other news, we talk about the Disney Proxy Battle, Joe Rohde possibly returning to Imagineering, Frozen voice actor Josh Gad getting social media blowback and… the Easter Bunny coming to Magic Kingdom.

The current proxy war at Disney has been heating up in the past few months, with more people announcing support for the side that matches with their ideas for the future of the company. While Nelson Peltz has been getting support from outsiders, many notable individuals including Abigail Disney and George Lucas announced that they supported Iger (despite both voicing their grievances with him in the past).
Now, another voice has lent their support to Bob Iger, that being actor and comedian Josh Gad. Gad is perhaps best known as the voice of Olaf the Snowman in the Frozen franchise, but he also appeared in the 2017 Live-Action Remake of Beauty and the Beast as LeFou and in 2020’s Artemis Fowl as Mulch Diggums, the Dwarf.

Avenue 5 is a hilarious science-fiction comedy that stars Hugh Laurie as the out-of-his-depth Captain of an ill-fated luxury liner spacecraft. So why exactly is Laurie's character, Ryan Clark, out of his depth? Well, because he is not a captain at all. Clark is an actor hired by the billionaire owner of the Avenue 5 craft, Herman Judd (Josh Gad), to give the passengers the notion that they are in good hands. Clark has no formal training to speak of; he is entirely ignorant of any and all operations on the spaceship, much to comedic effect. He uses a British affectation to soothe the demanding passengers of his crew, and most of the comedy revolves around keeping this ruse alive. His haughty and egomaniacal underpinnings constantly bump up against his severe ineptitude, which devolves into a cantankerous contempt for those in his charge, much to the audience's amusement.

Exclusive: Following a major bidding battle that went through the weekend, Amazon MGM Studios has landed an untitled thriller written by Natalie Krinsky, with Kim Kardashian attached to star and produce. Bruna Papandrea is also producing through her Made Up Stories banner alongside Krinsky.
According to sources, Amazon was one of five studios in the mix. With all being sorted out, sources close to the project say a theatrical or streaming release plan is possible, though nothing is confirmed given the early nature of the project.
Not much is known about the pic other than it being a thriller developed specifically for Kardashian. This marks the second massive package sold since the SAG-AFTRA strike ended with Kardashian front and center, after Netflix landed her comedy The Fifth Wheel over Thanksgiving; insiders say the latest deal is even more lucrative then that package.

In January of 2021, Megan Ellison got a call from Erik Lomis, the former head of distribution at her company, Annapurna Pictures, asking if she’d like to take a look at a movie whose filmmakers needed a lifeline. Disney was days away from announcing that it planned to shutter Blue Sky Studios, the 500-person, Greenwich, Connecticut-based animation studio it had inherited in the 2019 Fox acquisition, and with that closure, the Burbank media giant would be dropping Blue Sky’s most promising movie, Nimona.
“I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time, but being curious, I said yes,” Ellison said, in an email.
Ellison watched the hand-drawn storyboard reels, which directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane had adapted from Nd Stevenson’s 2015 graphic novel, and instantly connected with the title character, a shape-shifter voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz who appears most often as a young woman, but...

We just learned so much about Disney’s classic movie Frozen!
Believe it or not, the original blockbuster premiered in theaters 10 years ago. In honor of the special anniversary, Vanity Fair got stars including Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff together to look back on the start of the successful franchise.
In the process, we learned a lot about how the final movie we know and love differed from the original plot. It featured different actresses reading for Elsa and Anna (the characters played by Idina and Kristen) and a very different plot.
We also learned that Frozen was not the first Disney movie either Idina or Kristen auditioned for. Interestingly, they were both in the running for the same part in another hit from the House of Mouse.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito had a mini Twins reunion for State Farm’s Super Bowl commercial. However, the former co-stars were meant to reunite sooner in the nixed Twins sequel, Triplets.
Following the viral ad’s release, Josh Gad, who had originally been tapped by director Ivan Reitman to co-write the movie with former writing partner Ryan Dixon, decided to give a preview of the script the two of them penned on Wednesday.
He wrote, “One of my favorite commercials from this past weekend’s Sb was the reunion of Arnold and Danny for State Farm. Years ago, the late/great Ivan Reitman hired me and my then writing partner @dixonofnoho to write a sequel to Twins called Triplets meant to star Arnold, Danny and Eddie Murphy. David Krumholtz shared his worst audition experience for Kevin Smith's Cop Out, which was interrupted by a distracting 70-year-old Super Mario lookalike. Despite the distraction, Krumholtz kept going and thought they would give him another chance, but they didn't. He laughed about it with Josh Gad afterwards. Krumholtz also had a crazy audition experience for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, but ultimately got the part. He initially felt like he blew the opportunity but received a call later confirming his role.

Broadway box office held fairly steady last week, with Sweeney Todd‘s post-Groban slide at least partially offset by gains from most other shows. In all, the 25 productions grossed $24,615,726 for the week ending January 28, about 4% greater than the previous week.
Attendance was up about 5% to 217,847.
Box office for Sweeney, which recently saw the departures of original stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, was on the decline for the second consecutive week, down about $19,000 to $776,081. Attendance at the Lunt-Fontanne was at 90% of capacity, but a low average ticket price – $81.97 – kept total receipts modest. The trend likely will slow or stop with the February 9 arrivals of starry replacements Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster.
In the final week of its limited run, Gutenberg! The Musical! set a house record at the James Earl Jones Theatre, taking in $1,462,227 and playing to standing room only crowds. Producers announced yesterday that the musical, starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells,...

Isla Fisher is cautiously optimistic about the possibility of a Wolf Like Me season 3 due to the positive reception and cliffhanger ending of season 2. Fisher praises the team behind Wolf Like Me, including creator Abe Forsythe, and expresses a desire to work with them again. While a renewal announcement hasn't been made, Fisher hopes that the strong viewer numbers will help in Peacock's decision to continue the series.
Wolf Like Me season 3 gets a cautious update from star Isla Fisher. The Peacock series, created by Abe Forsythe, explores the relationship between Mary (Fisher) and Gary (Josh Gad), made complicated upon discovering the former is a werewolf. Along with Fisher and Gad, the cast of Wolf Like Me includes Ariel Donoghue, Emma Lung, Anthony Taufa, and Edgar Ramírez. Released in 2022, the comedy-drama earned praise, particularly for its lead performances, and in season 2, Mary's pregnancy brought an entirely new set of challenges.

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of Wolf Like Me.]
In the final scene of season two of Peacock’s comedy-drama Wolf Like Me, Mary (Isla Fisher) gives birth to her baby with boyfriend Gary (Josh Gad), revealing its identity as a wolf. Anxiety over whether their child would be a human or animal was at the center of most of the conflict throughout the show’s second season. But the streamer has yet to announce if audiences will get to see how Mary, Gary and his daughter Emma (Ariel Donoghue) will handle life raising a wolf offspring in a potential season three.
“Right now, we don’t know if we’re going to get to make Wolf Like Me 3. But it’s such an exciting time to be on Peacock, and when we do make it, they really let us push the boundaries and create the series we want to,” Fisher tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below.

Just how big a deal is Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show desk? John Oliver, the former Daily Show correspondent turned HBO Last Week Tonight host, compared it to NBA legend Michael Jordan’s return to the Chicago Bulls in 1995 after retiring from the game.
“Jordan’s back!” Oliver quipped in an interview with NBC’s Willie Geist.
Oliver was caught as off guard as everyone else with the news, which broke in the middle of the interview with Geist.
“I mean, that’s, that is a surprise,” Oliver said. “That’s a show that needs a host. He certainly is a very, very good one. So yeah, it’ll be exciting to see what he does.”
But he also added that the show “should appoint a permanent host” after Stewart’s run, naming former Peacock host Amber Ruffin and former Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. as strong contenders.

Artist Ulya Stuzhuk digitally transforms Gaston from Beauty and the Beast into a shockingly accurate live-action form. Stuzhuk uses a digital drawing technique to bring the character to life, making him even more handsome than his animated appearance. While the character starts off looking somewhat animated, as more details are added, he becomes increasingly real.
Beauty and the Beast's Gaston has been transformed into a shockingly accurate live-action form in new art. The 1991 Disney musical is based on the Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont fairy tale of the same time and follows a young woman named Belle who is imprisoned in the castle of a prince who has been cursed to be a beast, but eventually falls in love with the man behind the monstrous visage. The foil for the Beast is the hunter Gaston, who is handsome but cruel, ruthlessly seeking Belle's hand in marriage because she is valuable based on her looks alone.

Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour are back together and they’re making Devil Wears Prada jokes!
The 41-year-old Oscar-winning actress and the 74-year-old Vogue editor-in-chief made a cameo appearance together in the Broadway musical Gutenberg on Wednesday night (January 10) in New York City.
Gutenberg stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells as two musical theatre writers who are putting on a reading of the new musical they wrote called “Gutenberg.” They joke in the show that there are Broadway producers in the audience and hopefully someone will want to produce the show by the end of the reading. At every performance, a celebrity makes a surprise appearance as the “producer” who agrees to bring the show to Broadway.
Anne and Anna were the guest producers on Wednesday and it was a hilarious moment, all of which was caught on video.

Amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas, Jewish entertainment figures have come together to issue an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences criticizing their exclusion from being specified as an underrepresented group.
“An inclusion effort that excludes Jews is both steeped in and misunderstands antisemitism,” reads the letter, organized by the group Jew in the City’s Hollywood Bureau for Jewish Representation. “Jewish people being excluded from the Motion Picture Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards is discriminating against a protected class by invalidating their historic and genetic identity.”
The Academy’s standards, unveiled in 2020 as part of its Aperture 2025 diversity initiative, describes a number of identities that it considers “underrepresented groups”: women, LGBTQ+, having cognitive or physical difficulties or being deaf or hard of hearing, as well as underrepresented racial or ethnic groups. The Lion King and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child both set records across the holiday week, with the highest weekly grosses for a musical and play on Broadway, respectively, in history.
In the week ended Dec. 31, the long-running hit The Lion King grossed $4.316 million across nine performances, besting its own record of $4.315 million last year. This is the highest weekly gross across a nine-performance week, though Hamilton still holds the highest gross for an eight-week show, bringing in $4.04 million during the holiday week in 2018.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which opened on Broadway in 2018, brought in $2.72 million across eight performances, above last year’s record of $2.67 million over the holiday week.
In fact, the original movie even had different actresses reading for Elsa and Anna (the characters played by Idina and Kristen).
We also learned that Frozen was not the first Disney movie either actress auditioned for. Interestingly, they were both in the running for the same part in another hit from the House of Mouse.
At the end of the interview, the cast also reflected on John Travolta‘s now iconic flub at the Oscars...

LeFou's portrayal as a gay character in Beauty and the Beast was not explicitly clear, leading to criticism and accusations of queerbaiting. Actor Josh Gad, who played LeFou, expressed regret that the film did not go further in depicting a gay character in a Disney movie. Critics and Gad believe that if LeFou was intended to be Disney's first openly gay character, it should have been made more explicit and handled better in the film.
LeFou is a secondary antagonist in 2017's Beauty and the Beast, and several changes are made to him from the original animated feature - however, Josh Gad has some regrets about the final character in the film. Beauty and the Beast is a live-action remake of the classic Disney animation of the same name, telling the story of the beautiful Belle (Emma Watson) and the hideous cursed Beast (Dan Stevens) that she falls in love with.

The success of Frozen and Frozen II makes it likely that Disney will develop a live-action version of Frozen, but replacing the original cast poses a significant challenge. Disney must wait until the animated series is complete before producing a live-action Frozen movie to give audiences time to move on from the original films. By creating distance between the animated and live-action versions, Disney can overcome casting challenges and make the live-action remake of Frozen more successful.
The Walt Disney Company has been churning out a relentless number of sequels and live-action versions of some of their most popular animated movies, and Frozen likely won't be immune to the live-action craze. Olaf's spontaneous utterance of the name "Samantha" captures his quirky and curious nature, adding humor and warmth to the film. Josh Gad improvised the "Samantha" line, showcasing his understanding of Olaf's character and bringing spontaneity to his performance. The connection between the "Samantha" line and Gad's real-life encounter at Disney World highlights the impact of Olaf's character and creates a shared cultural experience.

The Frozen franchise is a massive success, earning billions of dollars and becoming a lucrative brand with merchandise and tie-ins. Frozen 2 introduces a new adorable character, Bruni, who is a fire spirit that forms a special bond with Elsa. Bruni's power and Elsa's power balance each other out, showing the theme of control and the ability for destructive forces to become helpful and beautiful.
Bruni is the cute little lizard from Frozen 2, but there's more than meets the eye when it comes to the tiny reptile. The original opening of Frozen featured Elsa being left at the altar, leading her to freeze her heart and become a villain. In the original concept, Elsa and Anna were not related, and Anna would have been a villager trying to show kindness to the bitter queen. The sisterly relationship between Elsa and Anna is what gives Frozen its heart and contributes to its massive success.
The original opening of Frozen would have resulted in a very different life for Elsa. The 2013 animated Disney movie was originally inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen and proved to be an Academy Award-winning production. With a budget of approximately $150 million, Frozen brought in over $1.3 billion at the box office. It was so successful that it spawned a sequel, multiple short films, two musicals, a play and an in-development threequel.

Frozen 3 should pay off the Samantha joke from Frozen 2, as it became a popular running gag throughout the movie. Samantha could potentially be a character in Frozen 3 or one of the franchise's nature spirits, connecting the joke to the main story. Introducing Samantha as Olaf's new friend could set up Frozen 3 and beyond, allowing the film to continue exploring the elemental spirits and Ahtohallan as a source of magic.
New sequels to Frozen are on the way, and Frozen 3 should pay off a four-year-old franchise joke with one obvious way to do it. Frozen debuted in 2013, and it was a major Disney hit. It was naturally given a sequel, which debuted six years later in 2019, becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. With not just one, but two confirmed Frozen sequels, there are many ways to continue the franchise, and honoring one of its most random jokes is one of them.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "Central Park.")
After three phenomenal seasons, Apple TV+ has unceremoniously canceled one of the best original programs on the platform, the animated musical sitcom "Central Park." Created by star Josh Gad with Loren Bouchard and Nora Smith of "Bob's Burgers" fame, Gad confirmed the cancellation on Instagram's attempt at Twitter, Threads, after a fan inquired about season 4. "Sadly, it's done," he wrote. Apple subsequently confirmed the cancellation to The Hollywood Reporter. This news is a devastating loss for fans of animation, because "Central Park" was easily one of the best new animated sitcoms in years. While sharing the Bento Box Entertainment animation style of "Bob's Burgers" and "The Great North," "Central Park" stood out with its dynamic musical numbers and boasted one of the most impressive celebrity voice casts ever put to television.

Apple is not moving forward with another season of “Central Park,” Variety has confirmed.
Previously, series star Josh Gad, who also serves as EP and writer, shared the news over the weekend on social media, telling fans “Sadly, it’s done” when asked about the show’s return.
The animated comedy follows “Owen Tillerman and his family live an unconventional life in New York’s bustling Central Park, which Owen manages; now, they’ll have to fend off a wealthy hotel heiress who wants to turn the park into condos,” per the series description.
Season 3, which was released on Sept. 9, picked up with Kristen Bell in a new role on the show. Bitsy continued her pursuit to buy the park as Owen took on a new promotional campaign to make more people fall in love with it. Meanwhile, Paige wound up busier than ever after landing her first book deal.
