Yet, ‘Akbar Allahabadi’ does not enjoy the place he deserves in the pantheon of Urdu poets.
Called "Lisan-ul-Asr" (‘Voice of the Time’) in his heyday, he is not entirely unknown due to ghazals like "Duniya mein hoon, duniya ka talabgar nahi hoon…", as rendered by the immortal K.L. Saigal, and "Hangama kyun barpa, thodi si jo pi li hain..", performed by Ghulam Ali, with that line reflecting Descartes’ ‘cogito ergo sum’ ("… har saans ye kahti hai ham hai to Khuda bhi hai"), as well as many more couplets on a range of issues and themes.
Take "Falsafi ko bahs ke andar Khuda milta nahi/Dor ko suljha raha hai aur sira milta nahi", or the rather sarcastic "Chorh ‘literature’ ko apni, ‘history’ ko bhool ja/Sheikh-o-masjid se ta’alluq tark kar ‘school’ ja/Char din ki zindagi hai koft se kya fayda/Kha ‘double-roti’, ‘clerki’ kar, khushi se phul ja...

Javed Akhtar was in Pakistan to attend a literary event, but he did not shy away from telling his audience why the Indians were angry. He raised the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks which he, being from Mumbai, had seen very closely. As a political slugfest has erupted over the cancellation of a concert by popular playback singer Arijit Singh at the Eco Park in Kolkata scheduled for early next year, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari has referred to a Twitter message by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in October 2015 over cancellation of a concert by Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali in Mumbai following threats from Shiv Sena.
After the show of Ghulam Ali was cancelled, Banerjee, in a Twitter message on October 8, 2015, invited the legendary Pakistani singer to conduct a concert in Kolkata.

Even as Pakistan's Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali explicitly stated that he won't return to India until things get better between the two countries, Mahesh Bhatt and his leading actor Imran Zahid continue their plans to stage a plain on Indo-Pak amity and have even invited Ghulam Ali to contribute a song to it. Entitled Milne Do, the play addresses itself to the thorny issue of friendship between the two countries. Says Imran Zahid, "For me, hope of peace is not just a few pictures and articles in newspapers but respecting, communicating with each other the way we are. I think that represents how educated we are, how liberal we are, how we want to work together and create peace and harmony." As far as Ghazal and Bhajan singer Anoop Jalota is concerned, Pakistan's Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's decision to stay away from India is only befitting, and the need of the hour. Speaking on the Ghazal maestro's decision to cancel all his concerts in India, Anoop Jalota said exclusively to this writer, "He (Ghulam Ali) is following my decision. I never sang in Pakistan, never did any concerts there as a matter of policy. Now he has decided to stay away from India out of fear, strangely after singing in India for last 35 years without any mishap." Anoop Jalota's sarcasm is not misplaced. A lot of musicians in the Indian entertainment industry secretly feel the atmosphere in India is not conducive to a free-wheeling give-and-take of talent. For every Gulzar who has visited Pakistan and come back raving over the hospitality there is an Anoop Jalota who thinks it's...

Shabana Azmi is extremely angry with the abrupt cancellation of the Pakistani Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai. She feels political parties should not interfere in cultural matters. "Shiv Sena should put its energies for the cause of farmers' suicides, infant mortality and many other issues. But that requires hard work. So much easier to hit headlines by attacking artistes." Baffled by the sudden turn-around in a cultural issue Shabana wonders, "What happened? Ghulam Ali has performed in India hundreds of times including at the Sankat Mochan Mandir in Varanasi!" Tragically Ghulam Ali Saab was to perform in the memory of the Indian Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh. Shabana gives the Maharashta chief minister an all-clear in this matter and lays the blame squarely on the concert organizers. "I wish the organizers had not cancelled the concert because it was to commemorate our beloved ghazal singer Jagjit Singh. The...

Ghulam Ali's love affair with India is old and the 69-year-old.
'Whatever differences and controversies are there between India and Pakistan, they are all political. Musicians and artists don't subscribe to that. In fact music lessens differences. It spreads love and creates a tranquil atmosphere,' Ghulam Ali told Ians in an interview.
'There is no difference between us; the same kind of music, the same ragas - our culture is the same,' he added.

Music director Aadesh Srivastava, expressed his ire at the trend of Pakistani artists coming to India and trying to become a part of the Indian music industry.
“In no way is this a discrimination on the basis of one’s nationality or religion. The thing is. We’ve got enormous music talent in our own country, and there is no need to peep in the neighbouring country (Pakistan) for artists.” Srivastava said.
He added that despite his being a big fan of Pakistani singers like Ghulam Ali, he nursed a grudge against them for not reacting to the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. “I am deeply saddened that No Pakistani artist reacted to the dastardly attacks in Mumbai, and I can never forget this,” he said.
And Srivastava is not alone. He’s found support in playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who has been very vocal about his discontent against Pakistani artists in India.

Mumbai, Bollywood has criticised the Shiv Sena's decision to stop Pakistani artistes from performing in Maharashtra in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror strikes. But musicians like Gulzar and Aadesh Shrivastava feel ghazal singer Ghulam Ali, whose concerts in India were cancelled last week, should have chosen a better time. Following are some of the reactions of the leading lights of the industry: Shaan: A ban is harsh and against the creative tenets of music. Proper paper work and a work permit visa should be adhered to. Rules will have to be respected by all. Artistes like Ghulam Ali saab are legends who should be adored and revered.Shekhar (of the duo Vishal-Shekhar): Musicians are musicians. Whether they're Indian, Pakistani or British doesn't matter.
