Saathiya Starred Rani Mukerji & Vivek Oberoi With Tabu & Shah Rukh Khan In Special Roles (Photo Credit –IMDb)
Saathiya was released 23 years ago! Yes, let that sink in. The year when Adnan Sami just Udi udi-ed his way to our hearts. The year Sonu Nigam peaked with his notes, and Gulzar peaked with his pen while he wrote, “Maarva ki raag mein, Meer ki baat ho!” The year Shah Rukh Khan established how cameos should and could be done!
Starring Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji, the film was an unexpected success for its unique storytelling, mixing timezones, a fresh style for the Indian audiences in a commercial film.
For the first time, I watched this Shaad Ali film on TV in 2006 or so, and I loved it. Of course, who does not love a Yash Raj Film? And I craved watching it in theaters. Thanks to Mumbai, I got this chance...

Bloody Brothers(Zee5)
Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Tina Desai, Shruti Seth, Mugdha Godse, Maya Alagh, Satish Kaushik, Asrani
Directed by Shaad Ali
I never thought I would see the day when the lovely Maya Alagh would actually share screen space with Asrani, and that too in circumstances that are not quite….ummm…above board, shall we say?
Ms Alagh whom I’ve always found under-used, makes a comeback after ages as the wily Sheila Aunty, neighbour to an old lonely man played by Asrani (in a cameo) whom Sheila looks out for like all widowed aunties do. Or, so it seems. In the one sequence that they have together we can see some flirting and also some greed and covetousness creeping up onto the screen like a slithering snake slipping up a slumbering sleeve.
Ms Alagh is something else. So, in some ways, is this series. Adapted from BBC’s Guilt,...

“Bloody Brothers,” the Indian adaptation of BAFTA winning BBC series “Guilt,” is set to bow on South Asian focused streamer ZEE5.
Directed by Shaad Ali (Netflix’s “Call My Agent Bollywood”), the show is produced by Applause Entertainment in association with BBC Studios India. Reset in the picturesque South Indian hill town of Ooty, “Bloody Brothers” follows two brothers, Jaggi and Daljeet, who, while driving home late one night, run over an old man. They put the body back in his house, but when people become suspicious, the brothers’ lives fall apart.
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub (“Tandav”) plays Daljeet, while Jaideep Ahlawat (“Paatal Lok”) is Jaggi. Both actors chose not to watch “Guilt” prior to filming. “That was a conscious decision that it’s better not to watch the original show, as per se, we are adapting it to India,” Ayyub told Variety. “Everything changes – the scenario, the culture of how characters would react.

Call My Agent(Netflix, 6 Episodes)
Directed by Shaad Ali
This adorable adaptation of the 2015 French series is the picture-perfect post-pandemic panacea with a heart that beats and loins that throb. It is everything that an adaptation should be: respectful to the original but not slavishly so.
Slave reminds of Ali Fazal who in one of the sexy sextet of episodes plays a medieval slave to Richa Chadha. For a film being directed by Hussain Dalal. Now , hear this. According to the script, Rich and Ali have broken up and must now perform a ferocious love-making scene for the camera. Ha ha ha.
The series is littered with such luscious inhouse jokes about Bollywood, like Tigmanshu Dhulia making a film called Paiydashi Killer co-starring Lilette Dubey and Ila Arun who, according to the script, can’t stand one another. The two actresses just kill it in the catfights. Nandita Das lets...

“The Rapist,” which has its premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival is the hardest hitting film that Indian filmmaker Aparna Sen has ever made.
A chronicler of different aspects of Indian life, Sen has previously won global acclaim for her eclectic body of work, which includes “36 Chowringhee Lane” (1981), “Paroma” (1985) and “Iti Mrinalini” (2010) as a director.
Sen is also one of India’s most feted actors who has worked with the stalwarts of the country’s cinema including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Rituparno Ghosh and internationally with Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
Sen had the idea for “The Rapist” some 15 years ago, and decided to revisit the subject after the recent spate of rape incidents in India. “I began to wonder about why men rape. No one is born a rapist. They go through infancy, through the toddler stage and through boyhood in all innocence,” Sen tells Variety.

Soorma
Starring Diljit Dosanjh,Tapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi , Satish Kaushik, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Vijay Raaz
Directed Shaad Ali
At a time when supposedly responsible filmmakers are glorifying gangsters, terrorists and sociopaths in ostensible bio-pics, Soorma about the struggles of hockey champ Sandeep Singh to overcome crippling obstacles to claim a name among sports legends, comes as a gust of unpolluted air.
This is a film that needed to be made, a story about a man whom future generations need to know about and look up to. Damn, the young need role models from our everyday life, not imported super-heroes who can’t save their own egos even as they purport to save civilization from destruction.
Soorma serves up an appetizing homemade dish of inspirational drama and some beautifully furtive flights of flirtation where Diljit Dosanjh’s Sandeep Singh courts Tapsee Pannu’s Harpreet with hockey and love songs. There is a...

We have a brand new song for you from Shaad Ali’s Soorma. The soulful track titled ‘Pardesiya’ composed by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy and penned by the legendary Gulzar is emotional and inspiring in equal measure.
Soorma, which releases in cinemas this Friday, July 13th, narrates the story of hockey player Sandeep Singh who was paralysed after an accidental gunshot in 2006. He struggled and battled with his paralysis making a comeback to international hockey in the year 2008 and it was under his captaincy, that India won the 2009 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and also qualified for the 2012 Olympics.

The word biopic is seemingly on the lips of every Bollywood fan these days. Whether it’s 2018’s Raazi and Sanju or Sultan and Dangal from a few years back, Bollywood has fallen in love with all of these true stories that in film look to find the story behind the story. Lost loves, heartbreak and despair, coming out on top in the end, who could be surprised that they do well in attracting cinemagoers. Their music follows this rollercoaster of emotions through too as it looks to complement the story rather than take it over. Often this means experienced music directors, who are known for being up for the challenge. So, when it comes to Shaad Ali’s new biopic Soorma starring Diljit Dosanth, it’s not surprising that Shankar Ehsaan and Loy are asked to create the soundtrack.
