A new dramedy series from film director Todd Berger (“The Curse of Bridge Hollow”) is set to be produced by Jennifer Levin and Bill Lawrence. It will center on a true-crime obsessed woman who finds a seat on a high-profile Las Vegas murder trial.
The lead character in the series titled “12 Rocks in a Box” is named Suzannah Weaver, she is “a self-described ‘Murderista’ obsessed with true crime.” The storyline — which was written by and executive produced by Berger — will follow Suzannah as she becomes a jury for an infamous murder trial in Las Vegas. However, “Suzannah soon begins to suspect that not all is as it seems with this case, and a DIY investigation leads her to believe that the killer may indeed be in the courtroom every day…and it isn’t the man on trial,” a description for the series reads.

HBO Max is developing a dramedy about a murder trial that boasts Bill Lawrence among its executive producers, Variety has learned exclusively.
Titled “12 Rocks in a Box,” the series centers on Suzannah Weaver, who is described as “a self-described ‘Murderista’ obsessed with true crime.”
Per the official logline, Suzannah is “thrilled to find herself on a jury for a high-profile Las Vegas murder trial. Todd Berger will write and executive produce the project, with Sherri Cooper Landsman and Jennifer Levin also executive producing. Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer of Doozer Productions will also executive produce. Warner Bros. Television will produce, with Doozer currently under an overall deal at the studio.

“The novel had always been important to me and that is true for almost everybody that worked on this film,” reveals “All Quiet on the Western Front” producer Malte Grunert. “I had read the novel when I was in my teens and then again in my 20s. It was always an iconic book. When the possibility presented itself to have access to the rights and do it again — a German-language adaptation of the best-selling German novel of all time — it felt like a blind spot. Why didn’t anybody ever do this?”

This story about “All Quiet on the Western Front” composer Volker Bertelmann first appeared in “The Race Begins” issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The new German-language version of “All Quiet on the Western Front” is one of the most harrowing and brutal war movies (or anti-war movies) ever made, and the music has a lot to do with that. At times, brutally sharp drum beats come out of nowhere and seem to assault the audience; other times, three enormous, foreboding chords blast in and linger, an unholy Dies Irae hanging in the air.
The film’s director, Edward Berger, has said that he wanted music that would attack the images on screen — and to provide that attack, he turned to his longtime collaborator, Volker Bertelmann (who often composes under the name Hauschka). Bertelmann has scored three films for Berger, as well as five episodes of “Patrick Melrose” and three of “Your Honor.

Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, which follows a young German soldier during World War I, has been adapted before. But Edward Berger, who directed and co-wrote the newly-released Netflix film adaptation, thought that his background as a German-born filmmaker would give him a leg up against the past editions. “It informs the film, and hopefully in the end makes a very different film than the American or English version,” Berger said of his heritage during a recent THR Presents Live at EnergaCamerimage, powered by Vision Media. “I thought that might be interesting to share.”
Berger was joined onstage in Torun, Poland by cinematographer and frequent collaborator James Friend — the pair also recently worked on the miniseries Patrick Melrose — to discuss the making of the film, which is also Germany’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Oscars.
