Born and raised in the city of Cape Town, Banathi Mgqoboka is a South African award-winning multi-platform news media practitioner, writer, researcher and 'relater of anecdotes', across the mediums of digital media, publishing, television, audio, and docufilm. His work has appeared in local, national, and international media outlets. These include four Media24 news titles (print and digital) in South Africa, Vice Media's Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning Vice News unit (for U.S. cable network HBO) and several others.
Banathi's work has earned him recognition at the prestigious Vodacom Journalist of The Year Awards (South Africa) and at Africa Check's continental African Fact-Checking Awards at the Wits Centre for Journalism (University of the Witwatersrand) among other honours.
A trained journalist and writer, Banathi is a four-time university graduate at both undergraduate and postgraduate level of study with degrees in Journalism, Digital Media and Media Studies including a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree from Rhodes University's School of Journalism and Media Studies in South Africa.
Banathi currently lives and works in Cape Town.
