The story is set during the sacred 16 days of Shraadh (Kaagvas). Politics has never really been a favoured subject for Bollywood filmmakers. In a country where mainstream cinema never really got out of the grip of censor woes and protest groups, the Hindi film industry by and large avoided cinema that spoke of politics and politicians.
Bollywood cinema has naturally hesitated looking at Indian politics and political themes while setting up fictional drama.
There have been cases in the past, after all, when themes pertaining to politics faced trouble. Kissaa Kursee Kaa was banned from release during Emergency owing to its satirical depiction of democracy in the country. Aandhi was banned a few months after release because it was felt that the film bore shades of Indira Gandhi and her politics. Parzania, depicting a fictional story against the backdrop of the 2002 Gujarat riots, was banned in that state, and so was Firaaq. Inshallah Kashmir won a National Award, but was denied release,...

OTTThis is truly a rare gem that needs to be used as a warning for future filmmakers about just how wrong they can go. Saraswati DatarWhen I was in film school, we learnt about this Hollywood film called Plan 9 from Outer Space that was ridiculed for being one of the worst films ever made. The makers were even given a posthumous Golden Turkey award. I think it’s only fair that poor dead Ed Wood who made Plan 9, rises from his grave to present his award to Shirish Kunder for making Mrs Serial Killer, now streaming on Netflix. Shirish who credits himself as the writer, editor, director and music composer deserves to be applauded. I mean how rarely do we get to see a film that is appallingly bad in every department? To add to the excitement, it’s also anti-adoption, anti-pre-marital sex, and anti-single moms. This is truly...

Naseeruddin Shah in "Hey Ram" (2000)
The Kamal Haasan-starrer film revolved around India's Partition and the assassination of Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. Interestingly, Naseeruddin had auditioned for the role of Gandhi in Attenborough's film. The role eventually went to Kingsley. Naseeruddin's Gandhi in "Hey Ram" didn't received the acclaim that Kingsley's effort did, but he was praised for nailing the act...

Point Blank
Stars: Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Marcia Gay Harden, Stuart F. Wilson, Buster Reeves, Christian Cooke, Teyonah Parris, Boris McGiver, Reggie Willis, Shanessa Sweeney, Nik Pajic, Markice Moore | Written by Adam G. Simon | Directed by Joe Lynch
Point Blank, directed by Joe Lynch, is a remake of Fred Cavayé’s À bout portant, which was originally released in 2010. The film stars two actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie as Abe and Paul, respectively. Paul has to break Abe out of custody in a hospital as his brother has taken Paul’s pregnant wife hostage. What commences is an unorthodox buddy-action comedy, in what is sadly yet another dull and tedious action-adventure.
It is hard to watch Point Blank and not debate why this was made, or even distributed by Netflix. Everything from its plot, actors and actress, or even filmmaking evokes a sense of direct-to-dvd nature.

People trying to find their real parents is a theme that has been done a fair bit in cinema for a long time now. The latest voice to tell the story is that of Jason Wingard’s, who attempts to put a fresh spin to the tale and, for the most part, succeeds.

There’s a chance you may have caught Boyd Hicklin’s cricket comedy Knocked for Six at London Film Festival 2012 – where it went by the name of Save Your Legs. However now seems a far more appropriate time to indulge in this quirky piece, as we enter in to the cricket season (otherwise known as the Summer, over ‘ere), with a film that taps into that annual excitement amongst fans of the sport. A sport that, while mostly untouched in cinema, has shown that it can translate well onto the big screen, following on from the brilliant documentary Fire in Babylon.
Teddy Brown (Stephen Curry) lives and breathes cricket, spending the vast majority of his time focusing on being the president of the Abbotsford Anglers, where he plays alongside his two closest friends, Rick (Brendan Cowell) and Stavros (Damon Gameau) amongst others. His biggest dream, however, is to embark on...

Rajkumar Santoshi’s comedies are mostly about ‘anything goes’ and his latest Phata Poster Nikhla Hero (Ppnh) is no different. Once again he creates a madcap world which may seem more authentic in an animation film than a real one. Shouldering the responsibility of bringing Santoshi’s vision alive on screen is Shahid Kapoor who uses this as an opportunity to showcase his versatility.
Vishwas (Shahid) dreams of becoming an actor but his single mother Savitri (Padmini Kolhapure) wants to see him as an honest police officer. He moves to Mumbai to try his hand at films and comes across the overenthusiastic social worker Kajal (Ileana D’Souza) who mistakes him for a real cop. Helping her earns him an enemy Gundappa (Saurabh Shukla), an underworld Don. More trouble follows in the form of his mother who lands up in Mumbai with the misconception that he has finally become a police officer.

Sanjay Gadhvi branches out into a new genre with Vashu Bhagnani production ‘Ajab Gazabb Love’ which keeps in line with the style of wholesome family entertainers Puja Entertainment has been known to endorse. The film is the remake of Telugu blockbuster Seema Tapakai. Does the director who delivered his last hit with Dhoom 2 in 2006 succeed in this brand new genre 6 years later? Read on to find out.
Ajab Gazabb Love is definitely an entertainer and a wholesome one at that however still tends to leave you desiring for a bit more. The film is very simple and perhaps a bit too simple and naïve in its inherent writing. To add to that the script tends to remind you of Aneez Bazmee’s Ready.
Rajveer (Jackky Bhagnani) falls in love with Madhuri (Nidhi) at first sight however he soon discovers that wooing Madhuri will be harder than expected. Madhuri’s serious...

Vashu Bhagnani is back with a vengeance. The enterprising producer, who had been toying with the idea of starting multiple films after F.A.L.T.U. worked at the box-office, is all set to materialize his dream. "I plan to complete at least six films before 2013-end," Vashu informs me. Wow! Sanjay Gadhvi, best known for Dhoom and Dhoom 2, will direct Vashu's immediate project, titled Ajab Gazabb Love. Being launched with fanfare on Friday, 13 April, this rom-com stars Arjun Rampal, Arshad Warsi, Kirron Kher, Darshan Jariwala and of course, Jackky Bhagnani and South actress Nidhi Subbaiah. "I have also finalized the release date of this film -- 24 October [Dashehra]," Vashu enlightens. Arshad Warsi, one of the most versatile actors around, will now wear the director's hat. And if things go as per plans, the audience would witness the Munnabhai team of Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani enacting principal roles in this film.

Bollywood isn’t exactly popular for good thrillers. Very few of those who claim to be of this genre actually manage to shock and surprise you with their storyline. Without doubt, Kahaani belongs to this elite group. From the moment of its amazing opening sequence you realize that this one is going to be an enjoyable roller coaster ride.
Sujoy Ghosh, who last awed us with his Jhankaar Beats, indeed brings to us ‘the mother of a story’ in Kahaani. Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan), heavily pregnant but determined, arrives in Kolkata in search of her missing husband. But was seems to be a simple missing person’s case turns out to be more twisted and complicated than expected. It’s Kolkata so yes, anything can happen. With things not what they seem to be and people not what they appear like, Vidya has to fight a lone battle and against time to find her husband.
