This heartening dance-contest doc follows U-16 crew Entity to the big leagues, but shakes up the formula with an element of surprise
Not strictly affiliated to the established British franchise, this cheery documentary nevertheless rotates in similar circles, tracking U-16 dance crew Entity from their Barking clubhouse to the world championships in Bochum. Directors Debbie Shuter and Adam Tysoe shake up the usual contest-doc choreography by remaining open to the element of surprise. While the kids bust spectacular moves, the mums get tiddly on the sidelines, and the UK’s streetdance ambassador is revealed as a greying Greg Davies-alike named Derek. Objectivity is soon abandoned – the film-makers’ son Ethan is in this troupe, so on-screen graphics deploy the first-person plural – yet that’s a small sacrifice set against the heartening community spirit evoked either side of the camera: here are people working against the odds, with presumably limited resources,...

Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

Who is the real enemy? Is it the Taliban in Afghanistan? Al Qaeda who knows where? Our own secret services, the mercenaries (sorry “private contractors”) all over the world, or perhaps even the hoards of psychopathic youth gangs that roam too many of the housing estates of the United Kingdom. Returning Afghanistan veteran Miller (Toby Kebbell) tries to unravel the barbed wire ball.
Matthew Hope’s dark, action thriller is a powerful, ambitious exploration of the shadowy bleeding overlap between the wars on terror and drugs. Like in his first movie, a zombie flick titled The Vanguard, the (anti) hero explores a world where unseen political forces shape events and morality blurs. In the Veteran, the occasionally awkward political speechifying is given to supporting characters, luckily, because that kept me on loving Miller,...
