Mary Shelley's iconic creation turns 200 in 2018, and to celebrate two centuries of Victor Frankenstein and his monster, author Christopher Frayling has written a new book (coming out this Halloween from Reel Art Press) exploring the rich history of Shelley's now legendary novel and the influences it has had on pop culture—on the screen, stage, and page. In today's Horror Highlights, we also have a look at Nerdist's short film The Mystic Museum, and details on the HelLA Horror Night charity event at the Los Angeles Theatre, Blackshaw's Scare Slam at the London Horror Festival, the Filipino folklore animated series Umbra, and the video game Guts.

Quinn is articulate but not pretentious about his art in this pleasingly straightforward documentary
Filmed over a couple of years, this pleasingly straightforward documentary follows artist Marc Quinn (best known for making casts of his head out of his own frozen blood) as he goes about his travels, collaborating with various fabricators, attending parties and openings, meeting other artists and famous people (from Ai Weiwei to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian), but most of all making art. Articulate about the work without being pretentious about it, Quinn clearly has a real passion for his vocation, although the film doesn’t reveal much about his personal life or inner emotional landscape. Often clad in a baseball cap and cool-dad hoodie, with his poker face and stern manner, he comes across like the manager of a successful startup, keeping one eye on the supply chain and another on maintaining the brand’s core values.

The penultimate night of Toronto After Dark 2013 is now behind us, and for all intents and purposes, it was a great success. The night’s movies were programmed so that they had a horror theme, and the directors of both were in the house to talk about them. As such, it wasn’t a surprise that the auditorium was packed to the brim for both features.
Kicking off the night was a rousing introduction to Bobcat Goldthwait’s latest film, Willow Creek, by the Tadff staff and Rue Morgue Magazine, who were co-presenting the screening as a part of their monthly Cinemacbre offering. Nothing gets you pumped for a night of movies quite like a dude in a bigfoot costume. They also gave away prizes to some audience members, and Bobcat took the stage to intro the film in his own words. As expected, he was funny as hell, but...

Tom Struthers and John Street are not easy to impress, especially for a team that has worked on some of the finest action movies in Hollywood such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Blood Diamond, Saving Private Ryan, Inception, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. However, the talented action directors were left speechless after Rishi Kapoor performed a brilliantly executed action sequence on the sets of D-Day without any training or rehearsals.
The veteran actor was shooting for an action sequence with Irrfan Khan which required him to crawl on the ground and engage in some intense hand to hand combat. Rishi Kapoor, who plays the character of Goldman, India’s most wanted criminal in the movie surprised the action director duo with his agility and accuracy in performance making the sequence look not only authentic but also extremely well executed leaving both Tom Struthers and John Street amazed. Dunoon Film Festival The first Dunoon Film Festival ran from the 14th to the 16 of June. It was a fairly small festival with a program of roughly 25 films and events spread across three screens in two venues. One of these venues was the Burgh Hall which is a listed building that is undergoing a process of renovation. There is a certain charm to the building with its roughness. You can see something of its previous uses, like the gymnasium lines on the floor. The other venue was the Studio Cinema. It is a big blue corrugated metal shed that sits between whitewashed Victorian buildings on John Street, just round the corner from the Burgh Hall. It is a legacy from the American submarine base that used to be situated on the Holy Loch just north of Dunoon. The cinema's two screens have a cosy and comfortable feel.

The seaside resort of Dunoon is a thin strip of town between the Firth of Clyde and the hills of the Cowal peninsula. It sits just south of the Holy Loch. During the Cold War Dunoon prospered, serving the Us naval base that was situated there but it fell on hard times when the Americans pulled out in 1992. The Americans did leave their marks on the town. One of these is the blue painted, corrugated iron Studio Cinema which nestles anachronistically on John Street between whitewashed buildings.
Over the years Dunoon has attracted more than its fair share of artists and musicians. The Queen's Hall has played host to many popular acts, from David Gray to Primal Scream. The town used to hold an annual Jazz festival. And now, for the first time, it is to have a film festival.

I’ve been powering through shortsightedness since I was thirteen – I’m too squeamish about my eyes for contact lenses to be a viable option and I really can’t stand wearing my glasses. I’ve simply never gotten used to the feeling of having what is essentially a strip of plastic strapped around the top half of my face and so, being a stiff upper lip sort of chap, I’ve for the most part done without. So when I was approached by my editor at WhatCulture! with an offer from the good folks at Optical Express for free laser eye surgery as part of their Team 21 initiative, I jumped at the chance. I’d have been a fool not to – I would be able to have my cake, eat it too and get away with a cheeky second slice it seemed.

The Game Group officially went into administration yesterday and with this action came the immediate closure of 277 of its 609 outlet stores across the UK and Ireland. This series of closures will mean 2104 people will be out of a job. Below we have the complete list of the stores in both the UK and Ireland that will no longer be with us, as reported by Retail Week.
This is the full list of stores that will be closing immediately. Dublin and Leeds seemed to be hit particularly hard losing a total of 5 stores each. My own local Game here in Stirling’s Thistle Centre looks to be getting the chop, so it’s a good thing I already headed down there to take advantage of their slashed prices. No doubt some people reading this will be in the same situation. It’ll be sad to see the stores go, especially in smaller towns like Stirling,...

Future Projections is a program of moving-image artworks which will be on view throughout the city during the Toronto International Film Festival (September 9 through 18). Below is the festival's announcement of the program's lineup; it follows entries laying out the lineups for Visions, Wavelengths, Contemporary World Cinema and Galas and Special Presentations.
Mr. Brainwash: Mr. Brainwash in Toronto (2011). Made famous by the film Exit through the Gift Shop as legendary street-artist Banksy's alter ego, Thierry Guetta , aka Mr. Brainwash, has continued to produce provocative and playful Pop art. His work hungrily appropriates contemporary visual-art masters and cheekily tweaks the nose of gallery-based convention. He will be engaged in multiple projects during the Festival, including a significant, multiple-piece exhibition at Gallery One. His presence will also be felt outside Roy Thomson Hall, with his spray cans towering over the red carpet, providing emergency assistance for evenings requiring additional glamour and pomp.

No! The New York Post reported yesterday that New York City is considering a proposal from Mayor Bloomberg to close 20 firehouses because of budget cuts. Among the firehouses slated for elimination is the one at 133 John Street in Tribeca. Officially, it's known as Ladder 8. But movie lovers around the world call it the "Ghostbusters" firehouse.
For any fan of "Ghostbusters" -- which, as far as I'm concerned, includes any rational thinking human on Planet Earth -- Ladder 8 is one of the coolest places in New York, if not the entire world. To this day, it looks almost exactly as it did in the movies, and they even have the actual prop sign from "Ghostbusters II" hanging on the wall inside. Plus, they've got the coolest official T-shirt of any firehouse in existence. If the Fdny eliminates Ladder 8 and -- God Forbid -- tears down a piece of movie history, I will be inconsolable.

Plus, they've got the coolest official T-shirt of any firehouse in existence. If the Fdny eliminates Ladder 8 and -- God Forbid -- tears down a piece of movie history, I will be inconsolable.

Chicago – Warner Bros. on Thursday finally issued an official statement confirming that principal photography is under way for “The Dark Knight Rises”. That’s like telling a mom she’s a mom two weeks after she delivers. The press release contained 455 words – yes, we counted – and literally only one word in it is new. Everything else we’ve already reported.
While we’re posting the whole press release below, we’ll highlight the following paragraph because it’s the only one that’s remotely interesting.
The locations for “The Dark Knight Rises” span three continents and include the American cities of Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles as well as sites in India, England and Scotland.
We haven’t been reporting Scotland as a filming location for “The Dark Knight Rises,” so thanks for that, Warner Bros. Of course, we still have no...

Chicago – With “The Dark Knight Rises” filming continuing today at the Farmiloe Building on St. John Street in London, a number of new developments have hit the Web.
First, a set video has appeared on YouTube at the Farmiloe Building. The man on the street who shot the video mocks himself and admits the footage is less than exciting, but it’s a legit set video nonetheless. In the video, he does discuss seeing an unknown woman in an unusual pink dress.
Also, the following new set photo cropped up on Wednesday where we see silver high heels dangling from the ceiling of the Gotham Police Department.

In other “The Dark Knight Rises” filming news today, we’re especially intrigued by a Wednesday report from the Gannett site Your Local Guardian.

Chicago – As we’ve been reporting, “The Dark Knight Rises” has officially begun filming at the Farmiloe Building on St. John Street in London. Filming is scheduled to continue at this location until May 21, 2011. While sources tell us this is a closed set, we can see surrounding set photos.
On Monday, ComicBookMovie.com says the London set was “a hive of activity with the standard large trucks parked around housing the technical equipment and various fluorescent-jacketed stewards and lanyard-wearing staff walking about”.
The first photo shows the publicly posted filming sign. The second photo was submitted to HollywoodChicago.com by a source in London. Photos three through seven and 11 show filming equipment. Photos eight through 10 show a Swat vehicle for the Gotham Police Department.

I paid a visit to the Farmiloe building on St John Street, London being used for the Police station in the third Christian Bale Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, this morning (Monday) at 10am and it was a hive of activity, with the standard large trucks parked around housing the technical equipment and various fluorescent jacketed stewards and lanyard wearing staff walking about. Evidence of actual shooting in progress was the illuminated lighting rigs on the street and on a scaffold/cherry picker. The surrounding Charterhouse Square was also being used as a parking area for more technical trucks. The parking permit stuck on the various parking signs showed that this area is to be used until Saturday 21st May.

After director Christopher Nolan wrapped his two-day shoot in Jodhpur, India, it was unclear where he would be taking The Dark Knight Rises (Tdkr) production next. New York City and Pittsburgh are both locations where the movie is expected to shoot, but before it heads to the States Tdkr has set up shop in jolly ol' England. According to HollywoodChicago, the Tdkr crew has set up on St. John Street in London to shoot a scene or scenes at the Farmiloe Building (the building with the white facade in the image above), which doubled as the Gotham City Police Station in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. According to the site, local businesses "have been advised that they’ll be hearing gunshots for the shoot."

One new addition has been made to the cast of Chris Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" with Israeli actor Alon Aboutboul (TV's "Castle," "Body of Lies") confirmed to be playing a mad scientist in the film.
The news first appeared at the gossip site Xo and the news was later confirmed by the actor's wife on Twitter. Aboutboul will play a role akin to an evil mad scientist which has lead to unconfirmed speculation that he's going to be Dr. Hugo Strange.
Meanwhile shooting on the film moves to London next week according to HollywoodChicago which indicates that the interior of the Farmiloe Building on St. John Street is being redressed as Gotham City's police headquarters.

From Jodhpur, India to St. John Street in London. The third installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman film will be preparing for a shoot next week at St. John Street in London. According to HollywoodChicago.com, the web site reported the “The Dark Knight Rises” production is transforming London’s Farmiloe Building into Gotham City’s police station. Here is the anonymous tip submitted to that site: Morning, Adam! I just got back from St. John Street this morning. Different activity now. They are getting ready to shoot scenes. The typical long, black SUVs that Nolan has are now there. I counted two outside and one inside down the side entrance. These are the same SUVs that we saw filming “The Dark Knight”. They have also put black tarpaulin over the front of the building to stop light getting in that would ruin a shot. They have Huge cameras and fans down the side entrance.

Casting news, where the shoot is heading next, the budget, and some discussion over who is paying the bill. It’s our The Dark Knight Rises round-up…
A few new bits and pieces surrounding The Dark Knight Rises have cropped up, so we figured it made sense to put them all together in one place. Which is what we've done. Here.
Firstly, then, some new casting news. Alon Aboutboul has signed up to feature in the film. He's an Israeli actor, known for the TV show Castle, as well as featuring in films such as Body Of Lies and Rambo III.
The news popped up at the Israeli website, Xnet, and apparently, Aboutboul is set to be playing one of the film's villains. This has opened up Hugo Strange speculation again, although that role has not been confirmed. We shall, no doubt, find out in due course.
As for the shoot itself,...

Chicago – While Christopher Nolan is busy preparing for the imminent “The Dark Knight Rises” shoot at St. John Street in London following filming in India, the suits back in the U.S. are butting heads over the business of the expected cash cow and who’s going to get fat from it.
For 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” which grossed a staggering $1 billion in theatres on a production budget of $185 million (plus an additional 16 million DVDs sold), distributor Warner Bros. was a 50/50 partner with the production and film financing company Legendary Pictures.
This time around, which is reportedly director Christopher Nolan’s last Batman film, we learn today that “The Dark Knight Rises” is expected to get a beefed-up production budget of “at least” $250 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The larger budget should be spent well on using additional IMAX cameras and more on-location filming. Also, stay tuned for...

With some principle photography apparently wrapped in India (here), Nolan’s team is heading to the UK next week to film in London, specifically St. John Street, which was home to the Gotham Police Station in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The shoot will last about four days, from May 16th until the 20th. Local businesses in the area have been told that they’ll hear gunshots during this time.”
Of course, we won’t get any sort of confirmation, but hey, anything on what should be 2012′s biggest film is exciting.

Justin Bieber was forced to stay inside Hard Days Night Hotel once he arrived in Liverpool, England on March 10 because hundreds of fans flocked outside the building and would cause a "potential riot" if he dared to come out. Reportedly, the Canadian singing sensation was supposed to take a historic "The Beatles" tour in the city that day, but has scrapped it due to the unsafe environment.
Although it was impossible to come out of his hotel, Bieber managed to greet his fans from the balcony. "There are like thousands of people out there. Love everybody but gonna try and get some sleep. Please don't scream lol," he tweeted. "This Is Crazy! Trying to work it out so I can say whatup to my fans. I Love You Guys!"
Rumor has it, police actually threatened Bieber if he or his team went anywhere near the balcony because the authority believed they would cause more riot.
