After years of mostly sitting on the sidelines, two streaming companies that have long been reluctant to bundle their wares with competitor services seem a bit more open to the idea.
On Monday, the telecom giant Verizon announced a $10 per month deal that includes the ad tiers of both Netflix and Max. That’s a 40 percent discount compared to their standard prices.
And it’s notable because while Max has offered discounted pricing before (Max just offered its ad tier for $3 per month for Black Friday), Netflix has notably not offered any discounts or wholesale prices on its plans for many years.
To be certain, it is not clear whether Netflix is offering a wholesale price to Verizon or how the discount cost is being shared among the three companies, but the 40 percent discount suggests that either Verizon, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix or some combination thereof is helping to subsidize those costs.

Verizon will offer the ad-supported Netflix and Max tiers in a bundle for $10 a month starting Dec. 7. The deal, available for Verizon’s myPlan customers, reps more than 40% in savings, the big telco said today.
Verizon will then offer two content bundles, Netflix and Max plus the Disney bundle, which includes Disney+ (no ads), Hulu (with ads), and ESPN+ (with ads) for $20 a month.
Bundling is growing increasingly popular since it reduces churn for streaming platforms. Last week the Wall Street Journal reported that Paramount Global and Apple are talking about bundling their respective streaming platforms at a discount. Media companies are also trying to drive consumers to their ad-supported tiers.
Verizon Wireless CEO Hans Vestberg said at a media conference today that bundles also improve customer retention on the cell phone side. The agreement is “boosting the momentum” at the wireless company. “We we feel good about” it, Vestberg said,...

Verizon lost 78,000 net pay TV subscribers for its Fios consumer video service in the third quarter, ending it with just more than 3.0 million, the telecom giant said on Tuesday.
It had lost 69,000 users in its consumer division in the second quarter and lost 95,000 in the year-ago period.
Verizon also lost 1,000 business Fios video customers on the third quarter. The company has in the past often cited “the ongoing shift from traditional linear video to over-the-top offerings” as a key driver of video subscriber declines.
Verizon, led by chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg, gained 72,000 Fios broadband internet subscribers in the third quarter after adding 51,000 in the second quarter. Total broadband net additions of 434,000 in the latest period compared with 287,000 in the second quarter, leading Verizon to end September with a total broadband user base of 10.3 million. The company noted that this meant “the fourth consecutive quarter that Verizon reported more than 400,000 broadband net additions.

Verizon lost 76,000 net pay TV subscribers for its Fios consumer video service in the first quarter, compared with a loss of 78,000 customers in the year-ago period, the telecom giant said on Tuesday.
Continued video subscriber declines at the telecom giant came as the wider industry deals with a shift to streaming platforms by television viewers and away from traditional cable TV packages. The consumer unit at Verizon had 3.16 million Fios video subscribers at the end of the first quarter.
Verizon, led by chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg, gained 67,000 Fios broadband internet subscribers, compared with 60,000 in the year-ago period. Verizon has been shifting its video focus away from FiOS TV to partnerships with third-party streaming services as it positions itself as a key distributor for them.
Consumer Fios revenue for the first quarter came to $2.9 billion, just down year over year Fios internet customer growth offset the declines in video subscriber declines.

With its regular season set to start tonight, the NFL has announced two business partnerships: a 10-year renewal with Verizon and an agreement with airport network provider ReachTV.
The Verizon deal will expand on previous efforts to widen the deployment of 5G technology. The telco’s 5G Ultra Wideband will be featured in parts of 25 NFL stadiums and over the next 10 years the plan is for it to have an impact on management, scouting, training, health and safety and game day operations.
“The NFL has embraced innovation for decades to bring fans closer to the game, from instant replay technology to outfitting players with microphones,” Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg said. “Our longstanding relationship, and swift delivery of 5G connectivity in 25 stadiums, has created new ways to bring fans even closer to the action.”
Over the past decade, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “Verizon has been one of our key technology partners.

Verizon said Monday that it’s clinched a deal to sell its media assets to Apollo Global Management and related entities for $5 billion. Verizon will retain a 10% stake in the company, which will be known as Yahoo at close of the transaction and continue to be led by CEO Guru Gowrappan.

Apple introduced its long-awaited, 5G-enabled iPhone 12 models in an online presentation today, announcing four models that will be available in time for the holiday season.
Pricing is pretty much in line with recent years. The iPhone 12 mini retails for $699, $100 less than the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Pro is $999 and the Pro Max is $1,099. Apple is also keeping the iPhone 11 in its lineup, at $599, along with the entry level iPhone at $399.
One notable change is that headphones and power adapters will no longer be included with the main purchase of the phone. Part of the reason for that is environmental concerns. The company said it is aiming to be carbon neutral in 2020, with a climate impact of net zero by 2030. Another incentive, of course, is to drive interest in the company’s wireless AirPods, which start at $149.

Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg will deliver the opening keynote at January’s CES, but not in its usual cavernous Las Vegas setting.
The event, slated for January 11-14, has gone all-digital due to concerns about the coronavirus. In non-pandemic times, the lack of social distance is a trademark of the massive confab, which draws hundreds of thousands of attendees. Conference-goers have included a growing number of Hollywood and advertising executives as technology continues to blend with traditional entertainment and media.
Vestberg will discuss 5G as “the framework of the 21st century, the essential tech of the present and
accelerated tech of the future to move our global community forward,” according to a press release.
The digital format will enable the speech to be viewed globally, a first for a CES keynote. The keynote slots are usually reserved for major newsmakers. Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman last year used one to tout the launch of Quibi.
