Exclusive: Comedian and writer Julian Clary (Julian Clary: Live – Lord of the Mince) will play the title role in this festive season’s London Palladium pantomime Robin Hood, with singer and travel show presenter Jane McDonald (Cruising with Jane McDonald) topping the bill as Maid Marion.

Last year’s production, Peter Pan, with comedy legend Jennifer Saunders making her pantomime debut as Captain Hook, and with Clary playing Seaman Smee, was a sold-out success, playing 56 performances -often two a day – to an audience of more than 123,000 at the 2,200 capacity variety house.
When tickets went on sale, there was a moment when 90,000 people were in the queue, waiting their turn to book seats.

Kate Middleton’s 2023 Christmas carol concert has come and gone. However, the annual event wasn’t without some memorable moments. (Spoiler: Prince Louis stole the show.) Among them was the Princess of Wales’s solo arrival ahead of the Together at Christmas taping. Amid royal family book drama, Kate, 41, looked every bit at her “confidence peak,” according to a body language expert.

Kate Middleton’s annual Christmas carol concert is almost here. And one element is bound to “enrage” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. A commentator says 2023’s Together at Christmas theme isn’t likely to go over well with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The reason? The show’s connection to Meghan’s time as a working royal.
2023’s ‘Together at Christmas’ carol service theme centers on creating ‘supportive, nurturing worlds around’ children and adults
Kate, and many other British royals, are in for a festive evening on Dec. 8, 2023. Together at Christmas will be taped at Westminster Abbey and later broadcast in Britain on Christmas Eve.
The carol concert will feature performances by Adam Lambert, Beverley Knight, Jacob Collier, Freya Ridings, James Bay, and Jacob Collier. Also preforming is the abbey’s choir. What began as a way to thank those who helped others during coronavirus (Covid-19) has grown...

The casting director for the James Bond franchise has claimed that younger actors showed they “didn’t have the mental capacity” for the role during the auditions process.
Debbie McWilliams, who has worked on the popular spy series since 1981, revealed that younger actors had originally auditioned for the lead role in 2006’s Casino Royale.
The part of Bond eventually went to Daniel Craig, who was 38 years old at the time.
“When we started [work on Casino Royale], it was a slightly different feel,” McWilliams recalled to Radio Times.
“We did look at a lot of younger actors. and I just don’t think they had the gravitas, they didn’t have the experience, they didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on, it’s a massive responsibility.”

Vic Reeves has admitted that he “never really speaks” to comedy partner Bob Mortimer.
The pair met in 1986, forming their comedy double act Vic and Bob, best known for their wacky panel show Shooting Stars.
However, in a new interview with the Radio Times, Reeves – whose real name is Jim Moir – admitted that he and Mortimer are rarely in contact.
“We never really speak much. Bob and I have never been ones for talking on the phone,” he said.
“[I’ll] see him now and then and have a chat about things.”
In recent years, Reeves has focused on painting, releasing his artwork under his real name.
However, he has often noted the link between art and comedy, saying that art, to him, is “just for laughs”.
“I’ve done straight drawings and paintings and things and I haven’t got as much pleasure out of them as if I’d done...

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. Beverley Knight has described home secretary Suella Braverman as “a risible character” due to the Home Office’s “disgusting” choice to abandon Windrush reform plans.
Last month, Braverman was criticised after ditching plans to establish the post of migrants’ commissioner, as well as saying that the Home Office would not hold reconciliation events, despite previous government commitments to address the injustices of the Windrush scandal.
In a new interview, Knight was asked her opinion about Braverman’s decision.
“It’s disgusting. She’s a risible character,” she told The Guardian in an interview published on Sunday (19 February).
“I cannot believe she’s in government. I cannot believe she is our home secretary.
“Priti Patel I thought was awful – but then in true hold-my-beer style, Suella Braverman entered the picture…”
Knight is currently starring in Sylvia at London’s Old Vic theatre, playing leading suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

A raft of British celebrities from Black, Asian and other mixed heritage backgrounds are encouraging ethnic minorities to take up the Covid-19 vaccine in a video campaign.

The video features historian and presenter David Olusoga, Olympian Denise Lewis, “Yesterday” actors Meera Syal and Sanjeev Bhaskar, singer Beverley Knight, comedian Romesh Ranganathan and cricketer Moeen Ali, among others.

Yesterday’s news that the UK government is placing London into its strictest tier 3 coronavirus lockdown has been met by an outpouring of grief from the beleaguered live entertainment sector.
Venues such as cinemas and theaters were able to re-open in the capital on December 2 when the country exited a four-week nationwide lockdown, and many have put a large amount of effort and investment into getting operational again ahead of the lucrative holiday period.
In the immediate aftermath to yesterday’s announcement, the UK Cinema Association said the move would be “devastating” for its members, particularly as Wonder Woman 1984 will soon be available to program (windowing issues asides).
Today, the cast and crew of Pantoland At The Palladium, the annual festive stage show held at the famed London theater, have joined the chorus of dissent expressing the negative impact this will have on the long term health of live venues.

The Queen is to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (V.E.) Day next week with a televised address in the U.K.
The monarch’s pre-recorded address will be broadcast on the BBC on May 8 at 9 p.m. BST in what will be her second televised message during the coronavirus outbreak.
The Queen’s rare address last month was seen by 24 million viewers, and ended with the words “we will meet again” — a reference to Dame Vera Lynn’s bolstering war anthem “We’ll Meet Again.”
The speech on May 8 will form part of a program of commemorations to mark the end of the Second World War after the original outdoor plans — such as street parties and parades — were canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak. Celebrations will instead take place in gardens, on doorsteps and in living rooms.
The BBC will broadcast special programs to mark the milestone occasion.

Jessie J became the first coach to jump out of the good Voice UK ship today (July 5), claiming that her music commitments rule her out of the BBC talent show's third cycle of spinning chairs.
It's not yet known whether Sir Tom, Danny or will are back for series three, but the search is already on to find a female popstar to replace J-j-j-Jessie.
The bookmakers have already started listing the usual suspects (Cheryl, Kylie, Adele), but here at Digital Spy we've come up with a list of serious replacements, who we believe to be genuine possible contenders for series three.
Joss Stone
If the BBC wants a like-for-like Jessie J replacement, personality-wise you couldn't get much closer than Miss Stone. She has a Marmite effect on the general public, she isn't afraid of speaking her mind and she's fond of an impromptu warble. We can easily imagine her dancing...

So this is what I know about Pixie Lott: easy-ish on the eye, she falls into that Sugababes, Saturdays genre of ‘girl pop’ that I avoid at all costs, and she released that ‘Mama Do’ track that drove me to the brink of despair a couple of summers ago. That’s my guitar music loving, chauvinistic view of Ms Lott thus far. Oh, and she was a terrible judge on The X Factor. Wait. I don’t watch The X Factor. I’m cool and ‘indie’. Shut up!

As well as preparing for his own performance this evening, James has also spent the last month mentoring Jorgie Porter and choreographing a street dance routine for her and after his routine, he stood by to watch as she took to the stage.
The blonde beauty danced to Mj’s Black Or White and actually her moves were pretty slick! After watching that, we’re sure James was pretty happy and that she’ll make next week’s final show!

Dannii Minogue and singer Beverley Knight have commented on Cheryl Cole's reported axe from The X Factor USA. The 'Promise This' singer was allegedly fired from the Fox competition's judging panel earlier this week after just four rounds of auditions. As the news spread, Cole's former X Factor UK colleague Minogue headed to Twitter to blast the Girls Aloud star's untimely exit. Referencing her own recently-announced departure from the ITV programme, Minogue wrote: "Judging roles should come with a life jacket, drop down oxygen and a life raft! Sending #Channii love." Meanwhile, Knight was slightly less sympathetic to the 27-year-old's situation, arguing on the social networking site that Cole should (more)...
