Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is impressed with the impact made by England fast bowler Mark Wood during the third Ashes Test at Headingley and compared the tearaway pacer with two legendary Australian bowlers Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee.
In playing the ongoing Ashes for the first time, Wood picked 5-34 from 11.4 overs and 2-66 from 17 overs in both innings of the match, proving to be a crucial point of difference for England in winning the Headingley Test by three wickets.
“(Wood) is a bit like him (Johnson) and a bit like Brett Lee in his prime I reckon as well. Bowling first change, bowling quickly, intimidating batsmen, getting a little bit of movement when it was there. He is just an absolute strike weapon,” said Ponting on The Icc Review show.
Ponting agreed with the view that Wood’s inclusion turned out to be the difference for England at Headingley.

New Delhi, June 13 (Ians) Australian fast bowling great Brett Lee has expressed his backing for Scott Boland to feature in the upcoming Ashes Test opener against England, starting on June 16 at Edgbaston.
Boland, Boland was selected in the Wtc Final playing XI over Michael Neser with Josh Hazlewood unavailable due to injury, played a key role in Australia bowling out India for 234 on Day Five of the marquee clash, including the double scalp of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the second innings to set the base for a 209-run victory.
While the Australian batting lineup is firmly established, there is still uncertainty surrounding the composition of the bowling attack.
It certainly will be a selection headache for Australia when they pick their bowling attack for the first Ashes Test with Hazlewood now fit and available for selection.

New Delhi, May 22 (Ians) Virat Kohli (101*) pulled off a string of records en-route his second successive century of the Ipl 2023 against Gujarat Titans at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday night, but Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) failed to make it to the play-offs of the tournament as Titans opener Shubman Gill (104*) had other ideas on mind, and helped his side pull off a brilliant six-wicket win with five balls to spare, and leave the home supporters stunned.

He was ably supported by Vijay Shankar, who came in as an impact player and hammered 53 off 35 balls. His innings was laced with seven boundaries and a couple of sixes.

The West Indies’ legendary hard-hitter, who has Gayle Force as one of his many nicknames, hit nine powerful boundaries and a six in this 46-ball knock. Doha (Ians) March 14 (Ians) Former Australian pacer Brett Lee, who is playing for the World Giants franchise in the Legends League Cricket (LLC) Masters, has said Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has to make some changes in his bowling routine, suggesting him to extend his bowling run-up to get the required pace and power out of his action.
Bumrah recently underwent a back surgery in New Zealand and now is in the race against time to be fit for the Men’s Odi World Cup, to be played at home in October-November this year. He is expected to stay in New Zealand till the end of March and may resume bowling only from August.
“Bumrah has got a wonderful record. Unfortunately for him, he has had that back issue for quite some time now. The only advice I would say is that with his run-up being so short, he has...

A captain’s knock of 68 from Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh’s four-wicket spell for 13 runs for Indian Maharajas, unfortunately, went in vain.

New Delhi, Dec 2 (Ians) Legendary Australia fast-bowler Brett Lee believes India’s in-form batter Suryakumar Yadav will someday be a major factor in winning a World Cup for the Indian team. 2022 has been a year in which Yadav, through his 360-degree play and astonishing shots, became the toast of T20I cricket.
He is currently the highest run-getter in T20Is this year with 1,164 runs in 31 matches, averaging 46.56 and at a strike-rate of 187.43. He also lit up the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the first time he’s played competitive cricket in the country. Yadav amassed 239 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 189.68, often changing the tempo of the innings for India.

New Delhi, Nov 28 (Ians) Australia fast-bowling great Brett Lee wants India skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to take the responsibility of shielding left-arm fast-bowler Arshdeep Singh from the overdose of advice that a young cricketer gets after succeeding initially at the international level.
Arshdeep has been the find for India in T20Is this year, stepping up admirably in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence to pick ten wickets in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Since his T20I debut against England in July this year, he has picked 33 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 18.12 and an economy rate of 8.17.
Though he didn’t have a memorable Odi debut in the first match against New Zealand in Auckland, his ability to nail yorkers and be calm in high-pressure situations have earned Arshdeep plaudits from all corners.

Melbourne, Nov 12 (Ians) Australia’s fast bowling great Brett Lee feels that it isn’t surprising for him to see Pakistan emerge as a better team under the guidance of team mentor Matthew Hayden in the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup.
Pakistan were on the brink of elimination after losses to India and Zimbabwe. But came back to win against the Netherlands, South Africa and Bangladesh, along with the Dutch defeating the Proteas, to enter the semifinals.
After defeating New Zealand in the semifinal, Pakistan will face off against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the final on Sunday. Hayden, signed up by Pakistan as their team mentor, has been a huge influence on the side’s roller-coaster run, which hasn’t surprised Lee at all.
“It doesn’t surprise me that, under the guidance of Haydos, Pakistan are a better unit. Because he’s such an inspirational character.

Jodhpur, Oct 4 (Ians) While the on-going Legends League Cricket continues to spellbound fans by rolling back the clock with the cricketing greats in action, former India batsman Mohammad kaif stunned the fans by showcasing the glimpses of his old self, attacking the opposition bowling attack in style.
During the match between Manipal Tigers and India Capitals, Kaif walked down the pitch to hammer the bowlers. This quickly reminded fans of him batting during India’s tour of Pakistan in 2004 when kaif irked Shoaib Akhter with a similar batting approach.
Kaif was brilliant in that Odi series which India won by 3-2. His series-levelling unbeaten knock of 71 in the fourth match is still fresh in fans’ hearts.
Kaif also revisited the memories when he later took to Twitter and posted a video of both the events.
“Walking is good for health!! #never stop walking. Allahabad wale cricket aise hi khelte hain.

Townsville, Sep 3 (Ians) There was something to cheer for Australia amid the gloom of losing the third and final One-day International against Zimbabwe here on Saturday, with pace bowler Mitchell Starc claiming his 200th Odi wicket to break a 23-year-old record, and become the fastest ever to reach the milestone.
Starc, 32, has become the quickest-ever bowler to 200 Odi wickets, eclipsing the 23-year-old record set by Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq.
Playing in his 102nd Odi here, Starc dismissed tail-ender Ryan Burl when the batter spooned a catch to Cameron Green at mid-off. Starc achieved the feat in two fewer matches than the former Pakistani cricketer (104), according to cricket.com.au.
Starc has reached a double-century of wicket in fewer matches than the likes of Brett Lee (112 ODIs), the late Shane Warne (125), Mitchell Johnson (129) and Glenn McGrath (133).

Starc has reached a double-century of wicket in fewer matches than the likes of Brett Lee (112 ODIs), the late Shane Warne (125), Mitchell Johnson (129) and Glenn McGrath (133).
Starc was also the quickest ever to 100 Odi wickets (after 52 matches) in 2016, though Afghanistan spinner...

Townsville (Queensland), Aug 31 (Ians) Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc grabbed three wickets as the hosts thrashed Zimbabwe by eight wickets in a low-scoring match to win the second One-day International here and take an unassailable lead in the three-match series on Wednesday.
Following figures 3/24, the 32-year-old Starc is just one wicket short of becoming the sixth Australian bowler to reach 200 men’s Odi wickets even as the Kangaroos leap-frogged West Indies on the path to automatic qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.
Starc led the charge here as Australia bundled out Zimbabwe for just 96 runs in 27.5 overs with the pacer accounting for Innocent Kaia, Wesley Madhevere and Tadiwanashe Marumani in his first four overs and consigning the tourists to 14/3. Regis Chakabva’s side were unable to recover, eventually bowled out for a sub-100 total.

Southampton, June 9 (Ians) India and New Zealand may be playing at a neutral venue, but it is Virat Kohli's side that has shown dominance away from home winning two out of the three series they have played overseas in the run-up to World Test Championship (Wtc) final. In contrast, New Zealand's run comprises only series wins at home with both their overseas tours in the run-up to Wtc final yielding no success for them.
The Kiwis have played five series in the 2019-2021 Wtc period and won three series at home against India, Pakistan and West Indies which saw them enter the final on the basis of percentage of points.
However, the second-placed team on Wtc points table had started the Wtc campaign on a poor note. The Kane Williamson-led side was held to a 1-1 draw in Sri Lanka in 2019 while they were thrashed 0-3 in Australia during the 2019-20 season.

New Delhi, June 8 (Ians) India skipper Virat Kohli will be vulnerable against New Zealand in the World Test Championship final if conditions in Southampton aid swing and seam bowling, said former New Zealand captain and coach Glenn Turner.
"I don't wish to speculate on whether Kohli's reflexes have deteriorated. But if the pitch and overall conditions favour seam and swing, he is also likely to struggle along with others as was demonstrated in New Zealand," the former opener Turner, who was the first batsman to hit a 150-plus score in ODIs, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph newspaper.
"Once again, conditions are going to be pivotal. I think it is true to say that the home conditions, where batsmen are brought up, play a significant part in the technique and skills of a player… English conditions are generally closer to those in New Zealand.
"Although it seems that in more recent times,...

London, June 7 (Ians) When India captain Virat Kohli and New Zealand counterpart Kane Williamson take field for the World Test Championship (Wtc) final on June 18, they will renew a captaincy rivalry that goes back 13 years, to the 2008 under-19 World Cup semi-final.
Kohli came out winner in that duel, and India eventually won the World Cup by beating South Africa in the final.
Since then, however, Williamson has grown in experience and earned accolades for his leadership whereas Kohli has earned honours as well as brickbats at the helm.
The last time the two had faced off in an Icc tournament was in the 50-over 2019 World Cup semi-final. Williamson trumped his India rival as he used his bowlers well to defend a 239-run total.
Former Australia speedster Brett Lee has said in an interview with the International Cricket Council (Icc) that the Wtc final would be a clash of two styles of captaincy.
