It’s become something of a movie fashion to forestall the title credits until well after an establishing sequence, if not deeper into the film. But when the title appears onscreen in Blue Sun Palace, at the half-hour point, there’s nothing self-consciously stylish about it: It marks a dramatic, ground-shifting change in perspective, a gut-punch of a narrative fracture, and one that writer-director Constance Tsang executes with assurance.
At the helm of her first feature, Tsang has made a sharp and tender story about dislocation, centering on a trio of hardworking Chinese immigrants in New York. In the movie’s first 30 minutes, Tsang draws us into the intimate orbit of her expatriate characters: a construction company employee and two colleagues at a massage parlor. Then, the sudden absence of one of them sets everything askew. Absence is the current that drives the narrative: absence from family, from homeland, from purpose.

Two buddies, Ivan Leung (an actor with several bit roles mostly on TV under his belt) and Harrison Xu (a prolific voice actor specialised in English-language dubbing of Asian series) and their actress-filmmaker friend Katherine Dudas decided to make a movie. About two aspiring actors friends making a movie. About two friends making a movie. How meta is that? Double or triple? Anyhow, that is how a little no-budget indie comedy “Extremely Unique Dynamic” was born, and we got the chance to see it at Caam Fest…
Extremely Unique Dynamic is screening at CAAMFest
The plot is actually a simple one. Daniel (Leung) and Ryan (Xu) are life-long besties that have been trying to become famous for all their lives. As kids, they used to play filming their shenanigans with a camcorder, and as adults they are aspiring actors and roommates in Los Angeles that spend most of their time...

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem’s Executive Sentenced To Death For Poisoning Billionaire Producer Behind The Series ( Photo Credit – Facebook; IMDb )
The hit Sci-fi series 3 Body Problem generates buzz everywhere for its cutting-edge and experimental story. But that is not the only reason the series is in the news. In a tale made for Netflix’s True Crime Documentary, bizarre and haunting news has come to light about the show. A former executive associated with the Late Producer, Lin Qi, has been sentenced to death after he was accused of murdering the billionaire.
The story behind one of Netflix‘s biggest shows gets more twisted. Billionaire and Video Game Tycoon Lin Qi hoped to make “The Three-Body Problem,” one of China’s most famous science-fiction novels, a global success. He had begun collaborating with Netflix and the HBO series Game of Thrones makers to bring the alien invasion saga to a worldwide audience.

A former executive at Yoozoo Games was sentenced to death on Friday in the 2020 poisoning of the company founder. The Chinese gaming company has links to Game of Thrones and the new Netflix series, The 3-Body Problem.
Xu Yao poisoned the food of 39-year-old company founder Lin Qi in December 2020, allegedly because of a dispute over the business operations, the Shanghai First Intermediate People’s Court said.
Lin was allegedly sickened by a cup of poisoned pu-erh tea. Lin died about 10 days later. Police detained Xu a few days after Lin’s death.
Four other people were sickened but did not die after Xu poisoned beverages in the office between September and December 2020. He allegedly did so because of disputes with two of them, the court said in a statement.

3 Body Problem has been garnering immense popularity, not only for its sci-fi tale featuring extraterrestrial species but also due to the many controversies associated with the show. While netizens and audiences, including 5 US Senators, disapproved of Netflix’s adaptation of the novel of the same name after certain comments made by the novel’s author, the show has gained additional exposure due to the tragic murder of the Netflix’s show’s Executive Producer.

Lin Qi, the EP for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem was murdered by a colleague, who was inspired to murder him by the hit US show, Breaking Bad. And fans reckon the making of the series and the tragedy associated with it is dark enough to create another Netflix series.

Netflix's "3 Body Problem" adaptation, which I reviewed for /Film here, is a genre-bender in the truest sense of the phrase. Based on Chinese author Liu Cixin's seminal novel of the same name, the series takes its cues from hard sci-fi, horror, and even bursts of fantasy while telling a sweeping and genuinely epic story about humanity's first contact with aliens. The live-action series isn't the first attempt to bring the Hugo-award-winning book to the small screen, as China's own uber-faithful "Three-Body" beat Netflix to the punch a few years ago. But as much as hardcore fans might enjoy pitting the two adaptations against one another, even that manufactured rivalry is nothing compared to the behind-the-scenes drama that ultimately led to "Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gaining the rights to put their own spin on the material.

The Supreme Court’s jarring decision to strike down race from college admissions wasn’t just infuriating, but also an uncomfortable trip back to memory lane.
I wasn’t too surprised by the super-conservative majority decision, but disgusted by the weaponizing of Asian-American students against Black students. Throughout my academic life, I, a Black queer Ivy League graduate, have always been compared to other students of color. The bad-faith pitting of Black students getting “unfair advantages” against “model minority” Asian students has been folklore for decades.

Vienna, June 5 (Ians) China’s women’s team fell to a 21-20 loss to Australia, courtesy of a last-second shot in the third-place game at the 2023 Fiba 3×3 World Cup here.
Due to Zhang Yi’s absence stemming from a knee injury sustained in the semifinal against the United States, China had only three players to vie for the bronze medal, reports Xinhua.
Despite being a player short, China executed a smart and strategic game, conserving energy and maintaining a 20-17 lead by scoring from afar. However, Australia’s Marena Whittle made the ultimate difference with two 2-point shots, overturning the game and securing victory.
The Chinese players contested that Whittle’s final shot was taken out of the 12-second shooting window, but the referees upheld the end results.
“It’s challenging to play such a tough game with only three players, but our desire to win was strong,” said Wan Jiyuan.

Harbin, May 24 (Ians) Despite limited proficiency in Chinese, Cuban native Armando exchanges boxing techniques seamlessly with Chinese students.
Armando, born in 1975, served as a member of the Cuban national boxing team. His boxing career in Cuba spans several decades, transitioning from boxer to coach. His trainees have achieved gold medals in world championships, reports Xinhua.
Fascinated by movie star Bruce Lee and elements of Chinese culture, Armando developed a fondness for Chinese Kung Fu films from a young age.
A chance encounter with a Chinese boxing coach at a competition in Cuba led Armando to China. He embarked on his coaching career in 2016, leaving a mark across Shandong, Chongqing, and Heilongjiang.
“Cuba possesses a rich boxing culture and history, and I aim to bring Cuban boxing techniques to China,” stated Armando. He has successfully mentored numerous boxers, some of whom have clinched titles in national competitions.

Madrid, April 30 (Ians) Women’s World No.1 Iga Swiatek came back from a service break down early in the first set to overcome No.29 seed Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the Madrid Open here on Sunday.
With this win the Polish star extended her clay-court winning streak this season to six after winning against her opponent from the United States, thus clinching her place in the fourth round.
Swiatek needed just 75 minutes to dispatch Pera and move through to a fourth-round meeting with either No.22 seed Zheng Qinwen or No.16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
“I wouldn’t say it was easy. Every match is tricky here,” Swiatek said afterwards. “I’m happy that I’m getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy…but I’m pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused.”

The narratives commonly known as wuxia stories in Chinese literature are one of the oldest surviving literary traditions, with their origins dating back to 300 BC. A typical wuxia story consists of a protagonist from humble origins who climbs up the social ladder through his own self-earned skills or those bestowed upon him, displays great feats of martial arts, either practical or mystical or both, and follows the ways of Chinese Xia traditions—a code of righteousness comparable to the Bushido code of Japanese Samurai or the chivalry of European Knights. Wuxia stories often range from the ancient to the medieval era and consist of fictional, quasi-historical characters with a limited amount of Buddhist and supernatural elements, which differs from the more over-the-top treatment of religion and mythology in Xianxia stories, which are essentially complete fantasies.

In much of the same way that his earlier film “Hex” emerges as a bizarre updating of a popular foreign genre film before putting his own spin on things, “Curse of Evil” is director Kuei Chih-hung's updating of the 1953 genre title “The Maze.” Although originally started by director Fung Wong before taking over completely, this over-the-top movie features a roundtable collection of Shaw Brothers stars and contains just enough of Keui's trademark wackiness to be a highly enjoyable genre effort.

The theory that the reality of social media is actually a total lie has been one that a number of people have begun pondering about during the last few years, particularly when the fact that a number of posts found on Sns was revealed to be from bots, with Twitter being the most clear sample. Daphne Xu presents a documentary that also moves towards the same direction, by following a rather interesting woman in Xiong'an New Area, a government-planned city just south of Beijing, named Hua Hua, who tries to be an internet sensation despite her rather miserable life circumstances.
