Noname recently returned to the NPR offices for another expectedly great Tiny Desk Concert.
The Chicago rapper is now one in a small batch of artists who’ve performed at the Tiny Desk twice, having made her debut back in 2017. But now with two official studio albums under her belt, 2018’s Room 25 and this year’s fantastic Sundial — not to mention the book club and activism she’s devoted herself to in the interim — 2023 Noname shines with a palpable sense of confidence.
Noname performed a six-song set that included four songs from Sundial: “namesake,” “hold me down,” “boomboom” with Ayoni, and “balloons.” She also dug up the Room 25 highlight “Don’t Forget about me” and invited her Ghetto Sage bandmates Smino and Saba to do “kush and love songs.”
The rapper saved the unrelenting “balloons” for last, showing some appreciation to her hosts: “Where better to do my most controversial song than NPR?...

(New York, New York – October 24, 2023) – Today, Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter/arranger/producer Yebba returns with the long-awaited beautifully-arranged new single bundle, ‘Waterfall (I Adore You),’ which had even hip-hop’s biggest star, Drake, requesting its release. The bundle also includes an alternate version featuring Sweata, all via RCA Records.
The 19-year-old church and New York-bred musician and R&b artist, producer & songwriter Sweata lends his soulful “boom bap infused” touch to the single, written by Yebba and co-penned with James Francies, Justin Tyson, Burniss Travis, Charles Myers and Malachi Mabson. This track is the first of new music to come since her live five-song EP, full of powerful recordings of songs from Yebba’s critically acclaimed, unbarred and honest debut album Dawn.
Her last EP saw her work with her band leader, James Francies on a cover of John Mayer’s “The Age of Worry.” With the critically lauded Mark Ronson producing the album,...

Ricardo Bermúdez remembers his father, with whom he didn't have the closest relationship with, leaving behind tapes of car racing compilations the few times he deigned to visit. This wasn't unusual because his father worked with cars, so little Ricardo would often sit down and watch the tapes out of curiosity and to pass the time. It was here, via the video's rollicking soundtrack, that he discovered artists like Wu-Tang Clan, Dmx, and others. Bermúdez was already a fan of reggaetón, as are most kids who grow up in Puerto Rico. But American hip-hop began to captivate him just as much. Years later, that mix of influences would eventually trace his arc towards new musical ambitions and a new moniker most people now know him by today: Tommy Blanco.
These days Blanco is part of a rapidly growing crop of Latin trap stars that have been slowly making themselves heard in Puerto Rico's music scene,...

The Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, was flooded with millennials and Gen-Zers on Feb. 21, all buzzing in excitement for the first night of Sza’s Sos tour. Advertisements for a “Seek & Destroy” speciality cocktail — made with pink lemonade, Tito’s, and cotton candy — were posted throughout the arena. Fans flocked for tour merch, poring over psychedelic graphic tees, chrome-emblazoned caps, and a purple-and-tan tote bag made by Los Angeles fashion company Online Ceramics. Less than three months after the long-awaited release of Sza’s second album, her performance would differ...

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Lyric Ross takes our call.
Lyric Ross voices Kat in "Wendell & Wild," Netflix's new social-commentary-studded stop-motion horror movie. The feature, which aired on Oct. 28, sees Ross's Kat literally go to hell and back while also fighting corruption in her hometown and rocking a great punk-rock sense of style.
At just 19 years old, Ross - who you may recognize as Déjà Pearson from "This Is Us" - is a standout in "Wendell & Wild." Her performance adds a singular sense of heart and angst to her character, who loses her parents and is sent to a Catholic foster home. There, she finds herself haunted by a couple of local...

It’s hard to understand why you don’t hear more Smino on the radio. Each and every track from the Chicago-via-St. Louis rapper is something of a musical kaleidoscope—they’re packed with varying images and sensations, and even on the same album a different aspect can come to the forefront with every song. You might get Outkast or D’Angelo vibes one minute then hear gospel or reggae influence the next.
Being hard to classify might be one way to be underplayed, but don’t call the rapper underrated.

“I’m a real soulful nigga, collard greens inside your speakers,” Smino rapped when he accompanied J. Cole and EarthGang on “Sacrifices” over three years ago. Both Smino and Cole have a penchant for unearthing the intertwined roots of hip-hop and the blues with tender melodies and concerns (Smino is particularly adept at blurring the lines between rap and soul with fuzzy trills and honeyed harmonies); it’s why they make an excellent duo when they reconnect on “90 Proof.” This time though, the elder Mc is walking into Smino’s domain,...

Chance the Rapper donned a tuxedo and channeled Motown choreography on Wednesday’s Ellen, performing his recent song “Eternal” with fellow Chicago-based rapper Smino.
Flanked by a pair of backing vocalists, Chance alternated between singing and rapping as he clapped and shimmied on an elevated stage — offering the song a classy, Temptations-styled vibe. Smino joined halfway through for a lengthy verse, and host Ellen DeGeneres — decked out in her own white jacket and black bowtie — made a surprise cameo in the final chorus, much to Chance’s delight.
