National CineMedia, which exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy last summer, drew cheers from investors Monday after an encouraging fourth-quarter earnings report.
Shares in the company shot up 17% in after-market trading on the quarterly numbers, which featured a small but notable uptick in national advertising during the quarter. The dual strikes of 2023 have hampered exhibition earnings of late, and those challenges plus the bankruptcy process left an imprint on the financials.
Total revenue in the quarter ended December 28 slipped a fraction to $90.9 million, compared with $91.7 million in the year-earlier period. National ad revenue inched up 2% to $71.9 million, with utilization gains of 14.1% offsetting a 6% drop in attendance. Across the media business, companies reported gloomy results from advertising in the quarter, putting Ncmi in a small cohort of those in the black.
Operating income in the quarter dropped to $21.3 million from $28.1 million in the year-ago quarter, but exceeded internal forecasts. On a diluted basis, earnings...

National CineMedia grew its fourth quarter profit, despite overall revenues remaining virtually unchanged, the in-theater advertising company announced Monday.
The net income attributable to National CineMedia came to $23.7 million for the three months to Dec. 28, 2023, against net income of $6.1 million in the comparable year-ago period. Overall fourth quarter revenue was $90.9 million, a shade lower than $91.7 million in the same period of 2022.
The revenue breakout showed national advertising revenue grew 2 percent to $71.9 million, which offset a slight decrease in local and regional ad revenue at $16.2 million, compared to a year-earlier $17.1 million.
“In 2023, National CineMedia successfully re-established the importance of cinema for best-in class advertisers, with movies driving the cultural conversation and the box office reaching its highest point since 2019,” Tom Lesinski, CEO of the company, said in a statement.

In-theater advertising firm National CineMedia unveiled its third quarter earnings on Tuesday, the first quarterly results since the company completed a financial restructuring in August.
On Tuesday, Ncm Llp for three months to Sept. 28, 2023 saw overall advertising revenue rise to $69.6 million, up 28 percent from a year-earlier $54.5 million, and its operating loss jumped to $150.7 million, against a year-earlier loss of $4.2 million.
“Our third quarter revenue growth of nearly 28 percent year-over-year demonstrates the strong momentum of cinema advertising and solid execution by our team,” Tom Lesinski, CEO of Ncm, said in a statement that accompanied his latest financial results. Summer box office from Oppenheimer and Barbie helped underpin an improved ad sales market for Ncm during the latest quarter.
“As moviegoers went to the theaters in record numbers, advertisers turned to Ncm to connect with the hard-to-reach young audiences that we deliver each week. With our strong and unlevered balance sheet and our attractive advertising platform,...

National CineMedia shares are popping today in a down market as the cinema advertising company emerged from Chapter 11 and named former top executives of NBCUniversal, HBO and Fox to a reconstituted, and pretty impressive, board of directors.

Movie theater advertising giant National CineMedia has been cleared by a Texas court to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as part of a debt restructuring deal earlier agreed with key lenders.
National CineMedia, which has around a $1.1 billion debt load with bondholders, said the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas confirmed its voluntary reorganization plan to emerge from Chapter 11 in August or September 2023.
The news follows Regal Entertainment Group owner Cineworld, the world’s second-largest exhibitor, announcing it will file for administration in the U.K. and delist its shares from the London Stock Exchange. That comes as part of its own debt-for-equity transaction that will see the cinema chain emerge from U.S. bankruptcy protection in July as assets in the cinema chain would be transferred to a new incorporated company controlled by lenders.

National CineMedia has signed a new longterm deal with Regal Cinemas, one of its founding partners, in the latest sign both companies are moving towards restructuring their struggling businesses in a recovering exhibition sector.
Terms of the new 10-year exhibitor service agreement were not disclosed, but the deal will see Ncm continue to exclusively offer on-screen advertisements at Regal Cinemas’ over 6,000 screens and 450 theaters, while also running its Noovie show with national, regional and local advertisers.
Regal, along with AMC Theatres and Cinemark, launched Ncm in 2007 to supply in-theater advertising, but those companies ran into the buzzsaw of the pandemic with industry shutdowns and disruptions to the Hollywood movie supply.
Under its contract with Regal, the company serves as the exclusive advertising service provider in exchange for monthly fees. Since 2007, Regal has been paid roughly $1.3 billion, with an average annual payment of $58 million from 2015 to 2019.

Movie theater advertising giant National CineMedia has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and struck a debt restructuring deal with lenders to “meaningfully strengthen the company’s balance sheet and position the company for long-term growth,” the firm said late on Tuesday.
It filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Texas.
The news comes after Regal owner Cineworld, the world’s second-largest exhibitor, filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection in September and formally filed its reorganization plan at the start of this week with the goal to emerge from bankruptcy protection by mid-year.

The nation’s biggest movie theater advertising network National CineMedia said tonight it’s filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Texas – where one of its biggest shareholders and customers, Regal parent Cineworld, has just presented a restructuring plan to emerge from bankruptcy itself.
Cineworld filed in September and hopes for approval in late May. National Cinemedia’s proceedings should go faster as it filed with a comprehensive restructuring agreement already in hand and supported by secured lenders that it says provides “a clear roadmap…to quickly emerge without disrupting its operations or customer relationships.”
The move is not a shock. The company recently missed and then extended several times the grace period on an interest payment originally due in mid-February, putting it technical default already with big ratings agencies and prompting speculation about a possible Chapter 11 or out-of-court restructuring. National CineMedia said today it’s negotiated a second extension of the grace period on interest payments originally due Feb. 15.
A one-month grace period for a payment said to be about $6.6 million ended March 15, when the company announced lenders had agreed to another 17 days. Big ratings agencies Moody’s and S&P Global declared the cinema advertising firm in technical default then and raised the possibility of a restructuring.
With that deadline set to expire, the company has revealed in a SEC filing another ten-day reprieve – or a total grace period upped from 47 to 57 days — to pay interest on 5.75% senior unsecured notes due in 2026.
It reiterated it “has sufficient liquidity to pay interest on the Notes” but that “extending the grace period will enable [it] to continue engaging in negotiations with … lenders regarding [its] indebtedness. At this time, no agreement has been reached regarding Ncm LLC’s indebtedness.”
The shares fell 8% to 13 cents today.

National CineMedia told advertisers today that it can help them reach “the unreachables,” aka 18-to-34-year-olds who are drawn more to movies than to linear TV.
In an upfront presentation held for an unmasked, in-person crowd at New York’s Lincoln Center, the company announced the launch of a new data platform, NCMx, which contains 274 million moviegoing records. The aim of it is to give brands insights into consumer behavior. Throughout the 40-minute presentation, the company emphasized its position as a reach vehicle to younger, desirable consumers.
Sizzle reels shown during the event at Walter Reade Theater highlighted a run of successful film releases over the past six months after the long struggle in 2020 and early 2021. A particular standout, of course, was Spider-Man: No Way Home, which Ncm says delivered more 18-to-34-year-olds in its opening weekend than did last February’s Super Bowl.

National CineMedia Expands Advertising To Cash Machines At 3,500 7-Eleven Stores In Pact With Atm.TV
National CineMedia has clinched a deal with Atm.TV to air content on high-definition screens atop cash machines at 8,500 7-Eleven stores nationwide as the movie theater advertising network continues to expand in digital out of home locations.
CEO Tom Lesinski teased the ad sales partnership on an earnings call last week. It’s the fourth deal by its new digital-out-of-home-group, which was created to further unite brands with audiences beyond theaters in complementary venues. The out of home inventory will include Ncm’s Noovi entertainment content and trivia programming.

National CineMedia, operator of the nation’s largest cinema advertising network, saw sales plunge and it swung into the red last quarter as more than half of all theaters were shuttered. On a conference call, execs noted recent agreements to expand outside of cinemas and said the company will be announcing another, a big one, in few weeks.
Total revenue fell 90% to $15.7 million. The company swung to an operating loss of $21 million from a $73-million profit in the year-earlier quarter. A net loss of $35 million compared with a $19-million net income. National CineMedia stock dipped more than 5% in after-hours trading.
“Having now weathered the worst of the Covid-19 storm, I am confident that 2021 will be a year of rebirth for our cinema partners and Ncm as we expect our high margin business model to once again begin to generate free cash flow growth and dividend appreciation for our stockholders,” said CEO Tom Lesinski.

In the span of six days, the Chinese box office roared to a $1.2B Lunar New Year record, with Wanda Pictures’ Detective Chinatown 3 setting global benchmarks for the biggest opening day and weekend in a single market.
This happened even as some Covid restrictions remain in place in the Middle Kingdom. While the pandemic rages on in other parts of the world, how did DC3 achieve such unprecedented heights, and what does it mean for a backlog of Hollywood tentpoles that’s primed to hit China, global and, notably, domestic cinemas once the situation elsewhere is controlled?
Clearly, China has become synonymous with outsize grosses, and the Chinese New Year period is perennially lucrative. But this month’s performance hopefully serves as an indicator of recovery that will extend to other markets as they get back up and running with new product.
Indeed, the Cny numbers left some in Hollywood agog.

Judging by the $14 million box office tally for The Croods: A New Age over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend span, the theatrical movie business will rebound, in the view of National CineMedia CEO Tom Lesinski.
Speaking Tuesday at the Bank of America Securities Leveraged Finance Virtual Conference, the exec took note of the sequel’s ability to outdo Warner Bros’ Tenet despite having only 45% of U.S. theaters available. “It’s a good indication of not if this industry’s going to recover but when,” he said. “Consumers are going to come back.”
He didn’t make predictions about exact gross numbers or the length of the recovery. Casting a glance in the rear-view mirror, he said the steady attendance level between 2009 and 2019 is “remarkable” given the welter of competition faced by the theatrical movie business. Like many industry partisans, he expects significant “pent-up demand” to be expressed in the months and years to come.

Tom Lesinski, CEO of leading in-theater advertising firm National CineMedia, expects a strong comeback for the movie business, especially by the fourth quarter, and only “few and far between” Trolls-style windows experiments.
“I think studios want to have their movies showcased in theaters, where they belong,” Lesinski said during an online appearance Wednesday at J.P. Morgan’s annual media and tech conference. “I’m sure there will be tests that go on, few and far between.”
When major circuits AMC, Cinemark and others reopen this summer, “movies will come back slowly,” Lesinski said. Updated with CEO comments:
National CineMedia – which puts ads on movie screens – said it may benefit from a delayed television upfront by grabbing advertisers first with theaters tentatively starting to open in July.
“Our national sales team is preparing for the 2020-2021 upfront season,” said CEO Tom Lesinksi. With broadcast sales moving later in the year – this year at least – it “may have the potential to benefit us as cinema will be first to market with fresh programming and we may be able to shift a few brands that would otherwise have gone to TV.”
Starting with Christophe Nolan’s Tenet, slated for release July 17, the third and fourth quarters are packed with big titles that studios have held until theaters reopened, he noted. And he thinks moviegoing may get a boost if the opening of schools and colleges are delayed in the fall.

“We’re facing an epidemic of anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia — the likes of which we haven’t seen in decades,” creator David Weil said Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “So this show is really a question. It’s: ‘What do you do?'”
“For this show about a group of vigilantes who try and reclaim the power, the question the show poses is: ‘If you hunt monsters, do you risk becoming a monster yourself?'” Weil continued. “I think that’s very timely, I think it’s a question we should all be asking ourselves in this day and age.”

Updated with AMC response. Under a new agreement with major in-theater advertising firm National CineMedia, top exhibitors Regal and Cinemark will incorporate advertising just prior to the “attached” trailers before feature films.
But AMC, the No. 1 U.S. circuit, has come out strongly against the plan.
The pact starts November 1 and will designate a single 30- or 60-second ad as a “platinum spot.” That ad will play immediately before the “attached” one or two trailers right before the feature.
Exhibitors will get a 25% cut of the revenue collected from the platinum spots, which National CineMedia CEO Tom Lesinski said “will become one of the most attractive spots in the advertising industry.”
Previously, the pre-show complement of ads had ended before the stated showtime, at which point trailers would begin to play. National CineMedia said the...

For months, industry insiders have been growing increasingly concerned about what appeared to be a cash-flow issue at independent studio Sonar Entertainment.
Multiple sources report that Sonar has been late on payments for writers on scripts and to talent agencies for packaging fees. The slowdown in the payment schedule has raised questions about Sonar’s ability to continue funding shows. The company has also seen a number of executive departures in recent months. A new CEO was appointed in August.
According to a source familiar with the situation, Sonar has been juggling payments to writers and agencies after its parent company, Canadian private equity firm Catalyst Capital Group tightened the purse strings in advance of the management shakeup implemented last month. With 10 shows in production, sources said Sonar took the step of delaying some writer and packaging fee payments in order to manage its cash-flow needs.

There’s hardly a better example of just how overwhelming the TV offerings have gotten than “Weird City.” The new slick and bizarre comedy was co-created by Jordan Peele and “Key and Peele” writer Charlie Sanders, features a stacked cast, and is nonetheless stranded on YouTube Premium (though the first two episodes are available to stream for free). It’s the kind of show that could only exist during Peak TV, when the vast array of options can make room for bigger creative swings; it’s also the kind of show that could, regardless of merit, get lost in the shuffle.
But if you do tune into the six episodes that dropped on Feb. 13, “Weird City” quickly proves itself to be an interesting experiment, at the very least. It takes place in a sci-fi world wherein the “Haves” and “Have Nots” are divided into starkly segregated communities by a literal...

The final day of the 2019 winter Television Critics Assn. press tour brought Cleo TV, BYUtv and Amazon Prime Video to Pasadena, Calif. Executives from BYUtv discussed their desire to reach a “broad audience,” despite being owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while executives from Amazon announced the order of almost 20 international series but said there was no real update on the “Lord of the Rings” series just yet. Amazon also presented panels for upcoming scripted dramas “Hanna,” “Good Omens” and “The Boys,” as well as the second season of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag.”

AMC’s martial arts drama Into the Badlands will end after the upcoming final eight episodes of its third season, which will debut March 24. The network also has set an April 24 premiere date for Season 2 of drama The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, which will be its last.
Neither cancellation is particularly surprising. Both Into the Bandlands and The Son were renewed for Season 3 and Season 2, respectively, almost two years ago. Into the Badlands’ 16-episode third season was completed awhile ago, the cast was released, and a number of them have taken on new acting gigs. As for The Son, as a Western, it did draw respectable viewership though it was old-skewing. Additionally, I hear star Brosnon only had signed a short-term contract which is the case with many movie stars who do TV series these days.
