Sandra Diaz-Twine was just voted out of “Survivor: Winners at War” in the one of the most cutthroat reality TV blindsides of all time. After a confident Sandra gave her hidden immunity idol to Denise Stapley in exchange for her fire tokens, Denise ended up using the idol to send home the “Survivor” Queen. “And now the question will be, how much gas does Sandra have in her tank?” host Jeff Probst wonders in his weekly recap video (watch above). “Does she want to fight to get back in?” he asks aloud. Um, Jeff, what exactly are you suggesting here?!

“Survivor” fans, there is good news and bad news when it comes to the upcoming 40th season, “Winners at War.” The good? If your favorite former players are voted out of the game there’s still a chance they can win. The bad? That’s because (spoiler alert!) the Edge of Extinction is back in play.
This controversial twist first popped up in Season 38 when memorable castaway Reem Daly became the first player voted out. Upon walking out of tribal council she was presented with a decision: stay in the game by boating to Extinction Island, or end her experience right then and there? As it turns out every castaway chose the boat option, though two — Keith Sowell and Wendy Diaz — quit not long after they arrived on the deserted island.

In recent years the “Survivor” reunion show has slowly been snuffed out before our eyes, with last week’s live “Edge of Extinction” chatfest running for less than 30 minutes. That’s a far cry from the early years of the reality TV show when finale night would conclude with a full one-hour reunion following the two-hour final episode. According to our recent poll, viewers are nearly unanimous that they want “Survivor” to bring back the hour-long reunion show, with 89% voting yes and 11% voting no. Do you agree or disagree with those poll results? Sound off down in the comments section.

As Season 38 of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” comes to a close this Wednesday with a three-hour finale, it continues to deliver innovations — some good, some not so good — to CBS’ venerable reality show’s format. I still have mixed feelings about having a horde of eliminated players crawling around Extinction Island like Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings.” Reem Daly, the first voted-out contestant, is like a cranky Greek sea creature, barking out her displeasure as those who banished her arrive one by one.
And if I never see another “Survivor” cast-off standing before those three signs explaining their Extinction options and then basically saying, “Heck yeah, I’m going,” before grabbing that lit torch, I won’t miss it. Considering that only two contestants, Wendy Diaz and Keith Sowell, have actually left the game, that means the will be a record 13 jury members determining the fates of the...

The audience has spoken. A whopping 44% of “Survivor” fans who voted in our recent poll say that they’re “so happy” Rick Devens returned from the Edge of Extinction in last week’s merge episode. Rick won the obstacle course challenge against fellow voted-out players Reem Daly, Keith Sowell, Chris Underwood, Aubry Bracco and Wendy Diaz, which earned him the right to return to the game and join the other 12 merged castaways. While Rick earned the most votes in our poll, Aubry came in second place with 26% saying that they wanted her to return instead.

In recent years the “Survivor” jury has been composed of anywhere from 8 to 10 ousted castaways, with “Survivor: Ghost Island” clocking in at a record 11 jury votes after a 5-5 tie required the third finalist, Laurel Johnson, to cast the deciding vote between eventual winner Wendell Holland and runner-up Domenick Abbate. That record is about to be shattered. If the rest of the current 38th season of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” plays out according to plan, with a Final 3 and no one else leaving the game, then a whopping 13 jury members will decide the winner.

With its island twist this season, “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” is more jam-packed with action given the need to show two locales and retain cast-offs who opt to try for another chance to get back in the game. Therefore, explanatory moments sometimes get left out.
Viewers watching Keith Sowell and Chris Underwood struggle for an advantage might think Keith resented Chris after he grabbed it away from him on Extinction Island. But, in an email interview with “Entertainment Weekly,” Keith — who voluntarily left the game along with Wendy Diaz last week — explains there was more to their feud than what made it on air.

News anchor Rick Devens escaped veritable purgatory and returned to the game proper, while returning player Joe Anglim was banished to the Edge of Extinction. It’s merge time, baby! The “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” castaways won’t just have that to deal with, though, as the six players they voted out previously are back and ready to seek revenge. We just got through watching two of the biggest personalities of the season, Aubry Bracco and Wendy Diaz, get voted out, and now there’s a possibility that one could come back into the game. This may throw a wrench into the games of more than a few remaining castaways, who have played the game thinking Aubry, Wendy, Reem Daly, Keith Sowell, Chris Underwood and Rick Devens were gone for good.

“Survivor: Edge of Extinction” has been quite stingy about offering clues as to how this super-secret (at least to the players who aren’t voted out) new limbo-land twist filled with outcasts will figure in the main game. During Wednesday’s two-hour episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the inhabitants of the deserted island learned that there was an advantage hiding somewhere at their camp. After Rick Devens decoded the map, he agreed with Chris Underwood and Reem Daly to all search for it together as a group. But Keith Sowell was having none of that. He rushed off to find the advantage alone, but simply wasn’t fast enough as Chris knocked him out of the way at the last second and grabbed what turned out to be bamboo rods that he can now use to practice for an upcoming challenge. In CBS’s extended video of this scene (watch above), Keith explains why he made the decision to rush off.
“I will do whatever it takes for my nieces,” Keith declares while crying. “I don’t even care. I will do whatever it takes. I don’t feel sorry about anything.

“I’d already been picturing myself eating a burger as I left tribal, but holy crap — I’m still in this!” declared Georgia newscaster Rick Devens during his exit interview from “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” In Wednesday’s fourth episode, Rick was eliminated from his brand new Lesu tribe by a 3-2 vote over Lauren O’Connell, with Dan “Wardog” DaSilva being the swing vote who sided with Lauren and Kelley Wentworth over the bromance of Rick and David Wright. Did the Lesu tribe make the right decision? Vote in our poll below.

“Drop your buffs!” Those three words instill either fear or elation in every single “Survivor” contestant, and this season’s group was no different. Did Wendy Diaz really risk her game by letting the chickens loose, as the preview trailer hinted? And who ended up joining Reem Daly, Keith Sowell and Chris Underwood at Extinction Island?

Through three episodes of Survivor: Edge of Extinction, most attention has focused on the Manu tribe. Understandable! The blue-buffed Survivors have attended every Tribal Council to date, sending the first three players over to the titular Edge of Extinction: Reem Daly, Keith Sowell and Chris Underwood, in chronological order, not to mention in order of escalating shock value.

“Survivor: Edge of Extinction” contestant Julia Carter is still in the hunt for the million dollar prize on CBS’s reality TV show, but you wouldn’t know it by watching.
Of the 15 remaining players, Julia by far has been given the least amount of screen time, and she’s now taken to Twitter to voice her concerns. “It’s disheartening to see the lack of equitable airtime defeating my goal,” she wrote last week. After three episodes, this 25-year-old Bethesda, Maryland resident has yet to appear in a private confessional and the most viewers have seen of her has been at the various challenges, where her yellow Kama tribe has won all three immunities.

Blindsides have become exciting and essential aspects of Survivor, but is it really a blindside when it is early on and a contestant has a major deficiency at challenges and is not regarded well at camp? In the first week, Reem Daly was booted out because she was perceived to be only so-so at challenges and was seen as a nag around camp. Last week, Keith Sowell seemed to be the obvious choice for eviction before he tried to stir the pot at Manu. The reason for this option is obvious — the man can’t swim! It held his team […]

The “winner’s edit” on “Survivor” has long been examined by hardcore superfans determined to solve the puzzle of who is going to claim the title of Sole Survivor. With such a wealth of different kinds of winners, no two have had the same kind of arc on the show, but there are a few things eagle-eyed viewers look for to see who’s a top contender. For one, they should have some level of prominence throughout the season, which means those who are ignored, with only a handful of confessionals, are typically drawing dead. Additionally, “Survivor” likes to make sure the viewer is happy about the winner, so they are typically shown in a positive light, even if there are hints of negativity here and there.

With the the second episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” in the books and all 18 players, new and returning, still officially in the game (but do we really think Keith Sowell is going to choose to stay?!) we can confidently begin our seasonal power rankings! So far it seems that the narrative thrust of this season is going to be newbies vs. the vets and all I can see right now is the newbies with a significant upper hand. Vets Kelley Wentworth and Aubry Bracco are in horrible positions while Joe Anglim and David Wright are being used as shields by newbies smarter than them.

“Survivor: Edge of Extinction” castaway Reem Daly learned the hard way about the struggles of being an older woman on “Survivor.” The Season 38 premiere was a self-admitted “nightmare” for Reem as her tribe quickly targeted her for being a weak link, in addition to her assertive attitude, and she became the first person voted out of this season. Reem still has a chance of getting back into the game thanks to the extinction island twist, but it was still a rough turn of events for the 46-year-old sales rep from Virginia. While Reem’s ouster was in part due to a lack of fitting in with her tribe, it’s hard to not see her early difficulties as just another example of women of a certain age struggling on “Survivor,” going all the way back to the first season.
