So, How Was Your 2020 is a series in which our favorite entertainers answer our questionnaire about the music, culture and memorable moments that shaped their year. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.
Trevor Daniel’s “Falling” is one of the catchiest songs of 2020, with an insistent hook that helped it blow up on TikTok nearly two years after its initial release. The Texan singer capitalized on that success with a full-length debut, Nicotine, released this spring. “There were a few times where people would be like ‘Make another song like ‘Falling,...

As a teenager, Leah Kate used to spend time each week trying to get the music industry to notice her. She would Google the names of her favorite artists’ producers, track down their emails, and send them Voice Notes; she’d email music publishers — “literally blast them with shit” — and none of it seemed to work.
Now, more than a decade later, that dynamic has reversed. After daily streams of her single “Fuck Up the Friendship” recently bounded from around 2,000 to around 140,000, labels are now aggressively pursuing Kate, bombarding her with DMs,...

Ashley Calhoun, Pulse Music Group’s new head of creative, preaches the power of patience.
Calhoun knows a lot about long plays. She signed beloved R&b artist Kehlani to the publishing and label group in February, after five years of conversation. “There were just a lot of things, deal-wise, that needed to be worked out,” Calhoun says. “She was really focused on building out her catalog and her worth, which she did. And it was the right time for us to sign an artist at that level. It was all timing.

Conan Gray was ready to conquer. By the time this year began, the rising pop and rock artist had achieved the dreams of guitar-playing teenagers everywhere — building a loyal YouTube following from his suburban Texas home, signing a major deal with Republic Records, releasing a single with hundreds of millions of streams (“Maniac”), and finally getting ready to drop a debut album in March 2020 that could put him solidly in contention for a Best New Artist Grammy in 2021.

Earlier this month, Shannon Mingal, a digital marketer at Epic Records, received an unexpected text: A glossary of 40 to 50 phrases supposedly used by Gen Z, the sub-25, tech-savvy demographic whose preferences currently dictate the streaming charts, an all-important barometer of success in the music industry. The collection ranged from relatively grasp-able (“legend,” an expression of enthusiasm that has become one of Mingal’s favorites) to wordy (“I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it,” another endorsement) to nearly indecipherable (“chair but make it electric,” a derisive...

Young American singer Trevor Daniel recently sang a duet with pop star Selena Gomez, with Grammy winner Finneas contributing as a songwriter. Trevor now hopes to join singer Camila Cabello on a tour.
Trevor released "Past life" on March 6, 2020, and followed it up with an official remix with Selena.
"While creating the song I initially felt Selena would sound really great on it, so the idea of having her on the record was there. I am really happy and blessed to have her a part of it," Trevor told Ians.
He shared that what makes the song special is "what the song stands for, which is letting go of toxic things, and growing as an individual".
And Selena "really related to it", he claims.
"Selena had mentioned that she resonated with the record, and really related to it," said the "Falling" singer.

This spring, Curtis Waters was bored out of his mind in quarantine in North Carolina. So he did what millions of other teens and young adults in America were doing: He went on TikTok. The 20-year-old indie-pop singer and his brother made a goofy dance video to Waters’ vibey tune “Stunnin’ ” using a green screen in their basement, unsure if it would go anywhere. “It was either I start making TikToks or buy Animal Crossing,” Waters recalls.

When Selena Gomez wants to join your song, you know it's a good one. And that's exactly what happened with Trevor Daniel and his track "Past Life." While it's been quiet the year from Trevor —he released his debut album Nicotine in March and landed his first spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Falling"—but 2020 got a little bit sweeter with one text: Selena wanted to be part of the "Past Life" remix—and sent over the vocals to prove it. Wandering through an airport when the message came through, "I was excited to hear it and she sounded great, of course," the 25-year-old exclusively shared with E! News. "I was just pacing...

What Could Possibly Go Wrong isn’t supposed to be divisive. The first full-length from music industry darling Dominic Fike is so anodyne and palatable that critically ravaging it seems beside the point. Since his emergence in 2018, Fike’s story has hardened into recent industry legend. He recorded a low-key EP while under house arrest in Florida, then released the collection of songs in 2017; in a flash, rumors of a $3-4 million dollar deal with Columbia Records began to circulate. Inevitably, the then-22-year-old artist hit the Spotify playlist circuit,...

On Friday evening, President Trump announced to journalists that he would be banning TikTok, effective almost immediately. Like most of Trump’s pronouncements, this one failed to come to fruition: as of this writing, the wildly popular app is still up and running, and Microsoft is currently still in negotiations to purchase it within a 45-day window, as dictated by Trump, who has announced he will allow such a bid to go through. Yet the announcement spooked many popular creators, who immediately started publicly protesting the ban. Even some right-wing influencers,...

Taylor Swift hopped on Twitter on Thursday morning to announce that she had recorded an entire new album in secret over the last few months. “I’ve poured all my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into [it],” she wrote. The news of Folklore was a surprise, the release date even more so: Thursday at midnight.
This last-minute “hey, by the way” was a far cry from the multimedia bonanza that accompanied her last album. The Lover rollout was an old-school music-industry blitzkrieg. Promotional deals with Amazon, Capital One, YouTube, iHeartMedia, SiriusXM,...

Selena Gomez and Trevor Daniel take quarantine music videos to a whole other dimension in their new visual for “Past Life.”
Directed by Grammy-nominated filmmaking team Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, the clip starts out simple enough, with Gomez and Daniel singing to each other over Instagram Live. But things quickly turn weird when the camera zooms in on Gomez’s screen and enters a surrealistic CGI world via … her pores and hair? We’ll take it.

Selena Gomez and Trevor Daniel have dropped the stunning visual for their collab, "Past Life." The music video, released on Tuesday, July 14, shows the artists practicing social distancing on Instagram Live amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. However, fans are then taken on a gorgeous journey of various landscapes around the world. "I'm trying to be honest with my happiness/Don't know why I'm bad at this," Daniel sings on the track. "And I don't want to sit all in my sadness/I know it's a habit of mine," Gomez continues. "Perfect, perfect timing/I start but I don't know how to end." The coronavirus pandemic, which has confined much of America to their homes and threatens to cause a worldwide economic catastrophe, almost also robbed humanity of a Drake song. Until three days ago, that is, when four 20-years-olds premiered a new TikTok-ready dance in a sparse living room with a stationary ceiling fan. The voice instructing them to dance was immediately recognizable as Drake’s, and he was giving simple instructions: right foot up, left foot slide, right foot slide. The song, though, hadn’t been released yet.

Trevor Daniel isn’t a TV critic, but the 25-year-old singer is giving it a go. Netflix’s Luke Cage receives a “bomb dude” rating, and Jessica Jones is “pretty fire.” It’s a week before the release of Daniel’s major-label debut, Nicotine, and instead of doing a press run in New York City — the U.S. epicenter of the coronavirus crisis — he’s decided to decamp to his home in Texas and catch up on his streaming queue.

In 2008, Jay Sean released “Ride It,” a dance-floor come-on that became a hit everywhere — except for the U.S. Now, it’s enjoying a second life. A house-music remix by Regard became popular on the video app TikTok, which allows users to set short clips to music. After the “Ride It” remix soundtracked millions of TikTok videos, Epic Records picked up the rights to the single in the U.S. and started promoting it to radio. Regard’s version earned more than 4,200 spins on the pop airwaves in February, according to Mediabase,...

The 25-year-old emo-pop purveyor has found himself lingering in the industry eye as a shining reflection of the current business model: get traction on SoundCloud, amass a following on TikTok, ink a fat deal. Daniel is signed to Alamo, music-biz veteran Todd Moscowitz’s subsidiary label through Interscope. His breakout single, “Falling,” has garnered more than 350 million streams on Spotify alone, and inspired remixes by Summer Walker and Alamo labelmate Blackbear.

Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” enjoyed a second week at Number One on the latest Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs chart. Ricch’s 50.9 million streams easily kept a comeback single from Justin Bieber at bay — the Atlantic Records rapper out-streamed Bieber by more than two-to-one.
Ricch’s other hit, “Ballin” with Mustard, also climbed two spots on the latest chart, moving from Number Nine to Number Seven thanks to 15.5 million streams. The pair of Ricch hits were joined in the Top 10 by a third, “High Fashion” (14 million streams), which also features Mustard.
