Two families mobilize their forces in a colorful Ape (the marketing department of Piaggio will be pleased to see an impressive number of people comfortably travelling in it) and a tagging motorcycle to make sure that “the adamant” 21-year-old Meena (Anna Ben) gets purified at a holy site, and additionally exorcized by a seer to change her refusal to marry the impertinent, larger than life and physically abusive Pandi (Tamil film industry superstar Soori Muthuchamy). The arranged marriage has to take place at any cost, but Meena does not react to any of threats or attempts at conversation. She is dealing with all that hullabaloo with stubborn silence and passive participation in spiritual rituals she is dragged to like a sack of green potatoes.

Farcical and viscerally upsetting in equal measure, P.S. Vinothraj’s “The Adamant Girl” masterfully exposes the nature of superstition by zeroing in on gendered expectations. A story of a betrothed woman being shepherded by her fiancé’s family between sites of religious ritual, the rural Tamil-language drama plays like an extension of “Pebbles,” Vinothraj’s remarkable 2021 debut in which an abusive, alcoholic husband and his young son traverse a harsh terrain on foot to retrieve his fleeing wife. This time, the men have cars and motorcycles, while the woman has little recourse but to silently bear the brunt of their beliefs, in a movie that makes deft use of the dynamic between bodies and their environments.
Vinothraj sets the stage by following his characters in lengthy, unbroken shots, observing their movement — or lack thereof, in some cases. He creates a sense of mood and texture around them even before they...

Reddy’s ”The Fable,” which screens in Berlin’s Encounters strand, follows a happy family who live as owners of a vast Himalayan orchard, until a series of mysterious fires bring into question who they really are. Interview Director of the Anna Ben – Arjun Ashokan film ‘Thrishanku’ tells us why he chose to make his debut with a quirky film on elopement involving two couples and two unsuspecting uncles. When you watch a movie about a couple who decides to elope only to find out that one of their siblings also eloped the same morning, you think, this had to have happened to someone the filmmaker knew. The filmmaker did not (know anyone it happened to). The story simply developed when the writers began working on an idea that they thought had always worked with the Malayali audience – a plot involving elopement. But it couldn’t be just that. The narrative had to be fresh, something untested before. In the film, aptly titled Thrishanku, meaning neither here nor there, the couple somehow ends up on a search mission of the missing sibling, in the company of two uncles.

ReviewDirector Achuth Vinayak makes a swell debut involving a couple, played by Anna Ben and Arjun Ashokan, who land in the strangest situation as they plan to elope. If you look for the meaning of the movie's title, you might end up on a Wikipedia page about a mythological prince who was cursed. A more familiar phrase for Malayalis is 'thrishanku swargam', used to refer to a place or situation that is neither here nor there. That is very likely what director Achyuth Vinayak had in mind for his film about a couple who land in the strangest situation as they plan to elope and end up going in the company of two uncles. It is as funny as it sounds, well to you the viewer, not per se to the eloping couple. And there is not one, but two sets of elopers. Writers Ajith Nair and Achyuth Vinayak have a tight,...

OpinionOnce upon a time, toxic love was extensively romanticised on screen. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny, there have been attempts to address the intricacies of toxic relationships.During an interaction for an interview, scriptwriter Sanjay (one half of the Sanjay-Bobby duo) spoke about how liberating it is to no longer see heroes slapping heroines in Malayalam cinema. There was a time when one ‘tight slap’ was mandatory in most films (especially family dramas) to ‘tame’ the heroine so that she would go back to complete the patriarchal happy family picture. But with the political correctness lens firmly fastened on films by social media, writers and filmmakers are thinking twice before sitting complacently on their conditioned belief systems. Once upon a time, love was extensively romanticised and lopsided on screen. There were many instances of toxic love being normalised, as well as celebrated, without question. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny,...

When ‘Kaapa’ released in theatres on December 22, 2022, the rousing audience response instantly proved that the film had broken new ground. The Shaji Kailas directorial headlined by Prithviraj Sukumaran in a charismatic and gritty avatar, is set in the crime-ridden underbelly of Thiruvananthapuram and has won praise for redefining the gangster genre in Malayalam cinema. While critics are praising its hyperlocal setting and transcendent story that depicts the vulnerabilities and compulsions of hardened gangsters, the film, even in its third week, is drawing huge crowds.
Based on the novel ‘Shankumukhi’ by Gr Indugopan, the film also stars Aparna Balamurali, Asif Ali, Anna Ben and traces the rise of a gang leader who turns into a politician.
Prithviraj Sukumaran adds, “Playing a character like Kotta Madhu was challenging because he rules his world with an iron fist and yet, abides by a certain version of right and wrong. This film has a...

ReviewShaji Kailas’s Prithviraj starrer doesn’t work as a mass-action film because it doesn’t have enough originality. Sowmya RajendranFacebook/Prithviraj SukumaranKAAPA stands for the Kerala Anti-social Activities Prevention Act, and Shaji Kailas’s action thriller Kaapa (written by Gr Indugopan based on his novel Shangumukhi) is about a person who unexpectedly finds herself on the goondas list. This seems like a fresh idea, but unfortunately, the film plays out like a pale imitation of many, many gangster sagas that we have seen over the years. Prithiviraj wears the mantle of alpha gangster Kotta Madhu, with veteran actor Jagadish playing his chief henchman. Madhu is Superman in general, but there is a past with which he is yet to make peace. Prameela (Aparna Balamurali) is his fiery wife who can make him bend to her will. There is another couple – Anand (Asif Ali) and Binu (Anna Ben) – whose lives intersect with theirs,...

Two and a half hours slip by too soon when you have mostly been on your toes. Without a murder, a crime, or even a car chase, the film manages to take the tone of a thriller, simply by baring the way news channels work. And it does it rather well. At the beginning of the film is a rather long disclaimer refuting any similarities to real or existing entities. But you can’t help looking at Tovino Thomas, who appears in a suit midway in the movie, shouting and unsmiling, and think how eerily similar he is to many a national news anchor and particularly one person...

They will go to the same college, join the same workplace, and get married. It is all distant dreamy faces for both of them until then. That’s when the boy talks about ‘babies’. The smile on the girl disappears, she says no, she will not give birth. The boy drops the egg of his puff quite symbolically and announces, ‘without the egg, the puffs are no good’. That scene and that line of the high school girl in a script he got is what caught Jude Anthany Joseph’s attention. ReviewAbortion has often been demonised on screen, and 'Sara's' is refreshing in taking a different view of the issue.Sowmya RajendranAnna Ben's big, bright smile can lighten up the darkest hellhole, and perhaps you need an actor with this amount of on screen likeability to play Sara in Jude Anthany Joseph's latest release that examines a woman's right to abortion. Although the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act in India is fairly liberal, abortion has many a time been equated with 'baby murder' in cinema. Don Palathara's Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam, which premiered at the International Film Festival of Kerala earlier this year, also explored a similar theme but with just the couple in focus, traveling to the hospital in a car. Sara's, however, involves the entire family circus. Anna Ben plays Sara, an assistant director, who is looking to make her first feature film (she somehow lives...

“There’s a Shammi in every one of us.” This was said by Shyam Pushkaran, the writer of “Kumbalangi Nights” about the villain of the film. Anyone from Kerala or the whole India itself who watches the film will agree on that. “Kumbalangi Nights” shows a villain who has been portrayed as the image of masculinity among the common man, who thrives on his patriarchal power for decades in cinema. But that is just the tip of the iceberg; the film has a lot to say through a simple story that leaves you with a smile at the end.

EntertainmentThis is by no means an exhaustive list and is only a starter pack! Tnm StaffMahesh Narayanan's C U Soon, released directly on Amazon Prime Video, has been getting rave reviews from viewers. Of special significance is the fact that the film was shot in under 20 days with an iPhone camera and the entire story is told through screens. These factors have piqued the curiosity of viewers and as a consequence, the film has attracted several people who may not have watched a south Indian — let alone Malayalam — film before this. Even film critics who don't usually review south Indian films have been lavish in their praise of C U Soon. Although there are four big film industries in the south, Indian cinema is often equated to Bollywood. Among those who haven't watched south Indian films, there exists a perception that "down south", the films made are all loud, unrealistic and grossly exaggerated.
