It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re taking another look at one of my personal favorites, director Scott Spiegel’s 1989 film Intruder (pick up a copy of the unrated Blu-ray Here). I previously covered this movie with an episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw and Emilie Black wrote about it for Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie. Now it’s Tyler Nichols’ turn to dig into it, and you can find out what he had to say about Intruder by watching the video embedded above.
Scripted by Spiegel (who wrote Evil Dead II with Sam Raimi) from a story he crafted with producer Lawrence Bender, Intruder has the following synopsis: It’s 10 pm and the employees of Michigan’s Walnut Lake Supermarket are in for a really bad night. The place is shutting its doors for good,...

Every year, Christmas rolls around, and the general viewing public gets to have some holiday romances, some family holiday films, and a few comedies here and there, with some forgetting that horror still exists and is rife for the holiday season. From creepy Santas to Grim Grinches, there’s plenty to be had in the more violent side of the film industry. Over the years, creepy Christmas has been a definite thing with plenty of movies dedicated to it in the horror genre. Who can forget the original Black Christmas, the recent Violent Night, Silent Night, Christmas Evil, and so many more. A few years ago, Trick R Treat made a splash in...

1999, a year of hope, a year of high fashion, nooo, no… 1999, the year when people prepared for Y2K, the year of all the odd choices when it came to fashion, and the year of interesting cinematic options. We got The Mummy which gave us all the hot cast members we could ask for and still gives us memes, we got End of Days, Stigmata, Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, Stir of Echoes, and The Blair Witch Project. It was a year for surprising hits, shocking failures, and offbeat horror films. So many smaller budgets did so well. Also out in 1999 was this movie about cannibalism in the olden days of the United States,...

The Blair Witch Project started a trend, a new sub-genre of films, those made with practically no money, a shaky camera, and the intention to cash in. This was rarely effective and a surplus of bad found footage movies were born. So, what would it take to make a good found footage film? Well, $15,000, a tiny cast of mostly unknown actors, and a house in San Diego. If you haven’t figured it out, we’re getting our Dv cameras ready and revisiting Paranormal Activity (watch it Here).
Found footage, love it, hate it, most people fall into one category or the other and very few find themselves right in the middle. It’s one of those...

Legacy sequels, recently they’ve been the talk of town, for better and for worse. The recent Halloween trilogy seems to be beloved by some and hated by others, the new Exorcist sequel underperformed both in box office and public opinion, yet these types of sequels are not stopping anytime soon. One that seemed to go over mostly well with a decent box office, mostly good reviews, and generally happy fans was the 2021 release of Candyman (watch it Here). Of course, plenty didn’t love it or thought it was trying too hard, but overall, it did ok and brought plenty of new ideas to the table while respecting the original. A lot,...

More and more remakes. So many remakes. Not all are good, some would even say that most remakes are trash. However, some are good, some are great even. This leads us to this movie, the remake of Maniac (watch it Here) released to the general public in 2013. While some hated it and with reason, others loved it, also with reason. The film is one of those that made changes that worked for the story and helped bring it to the new audience, who then turned around and saw the original. Well, some of them did. However, this remake didn’t exactly hit it big at the box office and it still seems to be finding its audience.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

The episode of Revisited covering Hellboy II: The Golden Army was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Following the beloved Hellboy adaptation that was released in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro, fans wanted more. As reviewed on a previous video, that one is excellent, so it was not surprising when the sequel was announced. Thus, in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (watch it Here) was released, and it ruled!
Let’s start with the rating here and it’s a complicated one for me. It’s actually hard to rate it because my reviewer brain, the part of me that is highly cinematically educated wants to give it an eight out of ten, which isn’t bad, but my heart wants to say it can’t be rated on a normal scale.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Prophecy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When it comes to religious-themed horror, there are a few films out there worth watching and when it comes to the early to mid-1990s, a few films really stand out in the dark, moody horror realm. These genres overlap quite a bit, and one stellar example of dark, moody, religious horror is the 1995 film The Prophecy (watch it Here), starring Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, Viggo Mortensen, Eric Stoltz, and Amanda Plummer. The film had a stacked cast for 1995 and it seemed to do decently in horror circles but not so much outside of that. So, what happened to The Prophecy?
What is The Prophecy about?...

The decade comprised of the years 2000 to 2009 seems to be maligned by many horror fans as a bad period, a period where nothing good was released. Much like the decades before it when folks maligned the 1990s, 1980s, and now more recent movies, there was some bad stuff put out of course, but there were also a whole of good movies too. Some of them, like The Strangers in 2008, The House of the Devil in 2009, and Brotherhood of the Wolf in 2001 were excellent even. People often seem to paint the past in a better light and vilify the more recent eras when it comes to horror films. In 2005, plenty of horror films were released.

A long, long time ago, in a state deep in the woods, a bunch of people were eaten by cannibal hillbillies in a film called Wrong Turn. Soon, the locals to where the film was taking place got very angry about the depiction of their fellow mountain and wood residents, which they thought gave them a bad name. Horror fans responded by seeing the film anyways, making it a minor hit. The first film had a budget of $12.6 million and made $28.7 million at the box office. While this may lead to a sequel at times, it was not a given. Fast forward to 4 years later and we are gifted with the first of a long series of sequels.

As of now, I think my love for Guillermo Del Toro as a filmmaker is well established. I adore the man and his work. He plays in my favorite sandboxes, with monsters, vampires, kaiju, giant robots, and in the gothic world whenever he feels like it. The man is after my heart with every single movie he makes. In 2015, he went ahead and asked himself, what does this girl love that she hasn’t gotten a whole lot of lately? And he answered with a gothic love story with ghosts in a Hammer-esque setting in a mansion with walls that bleed and memories imbedded in its construction. So, if you didn’t guess from all that, this...

It seems like every year, either at Halloween or sometimes at the end of summer, a new seasonally themed anthology, or six, gets released upon the horror-viewing community. We’ve been subjected to some good, some great, and some not so great. Anthologies come and go, but a few remain favorites for good, and sometimes bad, reasons. Films like Tales of Halloween, 10/31, Creature Features, Southbound, and Creepshow have been successfully harnessing the anthology category for years, decades even, while films like the V/H/S sequels, All Hallows Eve, and Verotika have shown us that not all anthologies are created equal. Of course, everyone has a different opinion on what the best ones are,...

Horror in the year 2000 was something. Yeah, that’s it, it was something. A lot of it happened, some of it was great, some of it was good, and some of it, not so much. Actually, if the internet crowd is to be believed, the early 2000s, especially the year 2000 were abysmal for horror. We did get a few memorable films released in 2000 like the first Final Destination film, Cherry Falls, Ginger Snaps, The Cell, and American Psycho. However, the scales had some serious bad on the other side to balance it all out. Films like Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Hellraiser: Inferno, Christina’s House, and Dracula 2000 (watch it Here) came and...

Comic book adaptations are everywhere these days, but in the early 2000s, they were a bit more of a rarity. There were some, but not a ton. 2004 saw a group of comic book adaptations come out including Immortal and Renegade and movies like Constantine, Aeon Flux, and Sin City were announced for 2005. One movie that came out in 2004 and made an impression, positioning the director, Guillermo del Toro, for much bigger things was Hellboy (watch it Here). This was his follow-up to the fantastic Blade II and, thus, not his first foray into comic book movies.

Slashers, one of the most popular sub-genres in horror. One with hundreds, if not thousands of entries. While it was certainly on the downturn in the late 1980s, it still seemingly had a new title released every week. In 1989 alone, the slasher world saw the releases of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Deadly Manor, I Madman, and a whole bunch more. It was a year for slasher sequels with a few originals peppered in. Slashers were big box office and direct-to-video draw in general and studios were churning them out. Ah, the late 1990s, a period of horror renewal, massive hits, and plenty of scares. Well, yes and no. Some films like the Scream franchise hit it big, like really big, and others, not so much. One of the failures of the late 1990s box office is Phantoms (watch it Here) which was considered a massive flop. How did Phantoms become considered one of the biggest flops of its era? 1999, Y2K was pending, some folks were freaking out about it while most teens couldn’t be bothered. Things that stressed our parents didn’t worry us one bit and things we stressed about they found silly. Escape was found, as before and as still is, in horror movies. That year saw a few big releases, some great fun ones like eXistenZ, Deep Blue Sea, and Lake Placid, some that were meant to be great like Virus, The Haunting and The Astronaut’s Wife, and a whole lot of middle of the road titles like The Bone Collector, Resurrection, and From Dusk Till Dawn 2. The world was covered in the ooey, gooey goodness of horror and its special effects.

There was something about them that was on the edge of horror, but not so far into the genre that general audiences would skip out. When one mentions the name Frankenstein in the horror film world, almost everyone thinks of the Universal Monsters version of it, the one brought to the screens in 1931 starring Boris Karloff as The Monster. His version is beloved for many reasons. However, one of the closest to the novel adaptation is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (watch it Here) from 1994, directed and starring Kenneth Branagh with Robert De Niro as The Creature. As what is supposed to be the closest adaptation, it would be easy to think it would be adored by fans and while that is true for some, it’s not for many.
As for myself, well, my opinion of it seems to change year to year almost.

With the newly released fifteenth episode, we’re digging into the Tobe Hooper / Steven Spielberg team-up Poltergeist (watch it...

By the start of the 2000s, there were so many slasher films out there that it was difficult to figure which ones were worth the time and which were not, something that hasn’t changed much since then. However, the mid-2000s saw a few fun surprise slasher films make their way onto screens including films like Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and today’s film of interest, Hatchet (watch it Here). Coming from a writer-director who knows the genre and has tremendous respect for it, Hatchet was one of those films most of the public didn’t see coming, one that was a bit out of left field if you didn’t pay attention...

Horror remakes are everywhere these days, but back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there were quite a few less, in fact, they were pretty rare. Of course, some had come and gone, with varying degrees of quality and success. Some of the better ones are well remembered to this day, including The Thing, The Fly, and The Blob. In 1990, another remake came out to a bit less joy. In fact, it was downright hated by many, with Roger Ebert even putting it on his “Most Hated” list, something that was not entirely surprising as he had high regards for some of the George A. Romero originals that came before.

Remakes: they used to be rare and few in between, but at this point, they are a dime a dozen, with just about any movie being up for a remake, especially in the horror genre. One remake that fans of the original were not happy about seeing it being made was that of Fright Night. The original film was released in 1985 and has become a classic to horror fans, one they love to return to and quote. It’s got that perfect balance of horror and comedy with fun performances, good music, rad effects, and everything a horror movie of the mid-1980s needed. Then, the remake happened. This remake of Fright Night (watch it...

Have you ever seen a film in theaters that made you go “Holy Bird Poop Batman” I wish I could see that again for the first time? Has there been a film that has made you want to find the biggest possible screen to see it on within a manageable distance? Or a film that has since become one of your “new Blu-ray player test movies”? I have. In fact, there have been a few of these in my lifetime so far, but the one for today is Brotherhood of the Wolf (watch it Here).

The Blair Witch Project, Wolf Creek, V/H/S, The House that October Built, Creep, Troll Hunter, Paranormal Activity… Like all good found footage films, Cloverfield (watch it Here) seemed to come out of left field, suddenly going from having never been heard of to having the biggest buzz around it and making about 7 times its budget at the box office. So, how did that happen? What is it that took this one and elevated it beyond some of the older titles in the sub-genre. How did this one catch the attention of the public and make so much money it got two sequels to date?
How did Cloverfield become a hit, what set it apart from the rest?...

Seemingly all the major slashers have had their remakes from Freddy Krueger to Leatherface to Jason Voorhees to Harry Warden, even Black Christmas and Prom Night have had remakes. For years, the world of horror had been working on bringing a remake of Hellraiser to the screen, one that fans would love, one that would be more extreme than the original, something even Clive Barker had a go at. Somehow, all the remakes seemed to have false starts by getting announced and then disappearing. Then, the Hulu reboot happened, completely different from the original, yet in the same spirit as the novella.

The late 1990s and early 2000s were a period where horror fans either loved or hated what was being produced and released. For every new good film, there seem to be 10 bad ones. The genre felt like it was saturated, and a lot of films came off similar to each other. Scream started a self-referential trend in horror, one that went from mild references to other films to straight-up meta stories. One of the better-received horror films of the late 1990s was 1998’s Urban Legend. It played with stories everyone knew, and it was fairly brutal in its approach to killings. So, to no one’s surprise, it was followed up by a few sequels,...

The 1980s, especially the mid-1980s, were basically the heyday of slasher films, many of them were being released each year in theaters and direct-to-video, some of them making huge box office numbers like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday the 13th movies, and the Halloween movies. Non-franchise films were not as big both financially and critically but they didn’t do too badly either. Then came Return to Horror High in 1987 (watch it Here). Some would say that the film was ahead of its time, being a very meta horror comedy about slasher films, having endings within endings, and twisting the sub-genre on its head. Horror has had many periods and the late 1990s were very much for self-referential films, dark humor, and cameos. Wishmaster, or Wes Craven’s Wishmaster (watch it Here) as it was marketed at the time, is more on the dark humor side of things than self-referential. Still, it does have plenty of cameos and references to other movies to be found by those paying attention.
While the film was marketed as Wes Craven’s Wishmaster, the film was in fact, written by Peter Adkins and directed by Robert Kurtzman, two creators the world of horror already knew. Craven was an executive producer here, but his name put butts in seats back in the day,...

The 1990s were a period filled with horror and cool films, sometimes films that were both. Clive Barker is someone horror fans know and love, someone that can easily be referred to as a Master of Horror. To some, he is more than that. The man has created entire universes of characters in his writing, deep with lore and some truly disturbing elements. Early on, his work became the source of film adaptations, but let’s be honest, they weren’t all exactly successful in bringing his words to the screen. Rawhead Rex was a bit of a mess; Underworld has issues, so why should he trust his Hellbound Heart to anyone else to direct?

The Crow series is a prime example of the sad but true happening of diminishing returns. While these are not 100% horror, they are often categorized as so and do contain a certain amount of horror elements. So if horror-adjacent is an issue, you’ve been warned. When it comes to the third entry in the series, well, it’s not exactly beloved. But it turns out it’s not the worst of the bunch, either. The Crow: Salvation (get it Here) didn’t do well upon release, didn’t exactly do well financially, and it’s not beloved by fans. Yet, something is interesting here, and it may be a lesson about filmmaking, timing, and taking risks.

The Rawhead Rex episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s were a period of overabundance in culture and films; it’s a period most remember as being colorful, loud, and filled with bright personalities on television and in film. This is an exaggeration created through media for the sake of a glossy reality being depicted. In fact, the 1980s were very… brown. And Rawhead Rex (watch it Here) is basically the cinematic realization, if that makes sense. Let’s explain this:
Most people remember all the colorful fashion, the flashy looks, the pretty people, and horror films like The Monster Squad, Chopping Mall, and even Evil Dead, which were fairly brightly colored horror films with varying levels of the blood being used.

The original Swamp Thing is from 1982; it took seven years to get a sequel, a change of director, and a massive shift in tone. If the first one was very 1980s, this one is 1980s to the max! The sequel to Swamp Thing takes the tongue-in-cheek route all the way to the bank. Or at least all the way to the end credits. For a film that cost $3 million, making less than $300,000 at the box office was abysmal. However, looking back at the film now, it’s a fun ride. Is The Return of Swamp Thing (watch it Here) a perfect film? Far from that. Is it a good movie? Debatable. Is it cheesy? 4 brie cheeses out of 5. How much...

After years toiling in obscurity, two beloved icons, Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan, launched major comebacks this year with The Whale and Everything Everywhere All At Once. In light of their recent Oscar nominations, we thought it would be fun to brainstorm a list of other stars we think are overdue for a comeback.

While technically, she’s been around without a break in her career, her parts over the last decade and more have been mostly voice work and guest appearances on television shows and in lower budget movies. Her work is always stellar and her presence online during the pandemic was a breath of fresh air. Her Aloha Friday live posts were something that kept many in a positive mood. Anyone who has met her will most likely say the same thing, she’s a joy to meet and absolutely fantastic.
