Christian Louboutin is the focus of a new documentary for Channel 4.
Famous for producing some of the world's most iconic shoes, Louboutin has allowed cameras to spend a year filming behind the scenes as he travels the world attempting to expand his business.
With his shoes costing up to £6,000 a pair, the documentary will show him at Paris Fashion Week, in meetings with Vogue, doing fittings with celebrity clients, and preparing for the forthcoming season.
Louboutin (and butler Safquat) also travel to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan to discuss a new line of shoes which would be handcrafted from chunks of wood, as he attempts to ensure he is ahead of the fashion market.
As the brand does not advertise the shoes and relies solely on word of mouth, he heads to the Middle East to see how he can target the growing number of millionaires there.

Prior to this week’s episode, we’ve been doing a lot of catching up. There has been a bit of character upkeep and Ricky and Kate have kept busy doing a bit of plot-point bookkeeping. “Walk of Punishment” changes all this. Guest host Michael Waldman joins the conversation this week to discuss our favourite characters who all seem to be scrambling to find a viable position in situations where they have little to no control. Vague comparisons to the book are made, questions are answered and we offer a bit of speculation as well.

Meet the Fokkens
Written by Gabrielle Provaas and Rob Schröder
Directed by Gabrielle Provaas
Netherlands, 2011
There is a long tradition in documentary film of personalizing unusual individuals. In fact the entire genre of first-person narrative documentary has largely revolved around finding people and stories that are unusual, even openly odd, and seeking to provide the viewer with some insight into their character and behavior. Another genre, what I like to call Freakumentaries, finds weird people and exploits them for the entertainment of their audience, providing little else beyond voyeurism. In describing Meet the Fokkens, a film about two elderly twin prostitutes who are retiring from the Red Light district in Amsterdam, one would be excused for expecting the latter, especially given the terrible (English) title. However the film is actually an excellent, if unusually executed, example of the introspective power of narrative documentary film to personalize a subject and engage an audience.

The Ambassador
Written by Mads Brügger and Maja Jul Larsen
Directed by Mads Brügger
Denmark, 2011
As strange as it might sound to some people, documentary filmmakers are often exceptionally brave individuals. They are people who are at least willing to ask honest, probing questions of their subjects and at most are willing to do it in dangerous, even life-threatening circumstances. In many cases their willingness to document and expose, even at risk to themselves, has defined our perspective and shaped how we see certain issues. In The Ambassador, director and star Mads Brügger puts himself at greater risk, perhaps accidently, then any documentarian I’ve ever seen.
The film explores the idea that anyone can buy a diplomatic title to an impoverished African nation from another impoverished African nation, provided you can get access to the kind of morally bankrupt people you would expect to broker that kind of deal.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Written by Alison Klayman
Directed by Alison Klayman
USA, 2012
A good documentary requires a good subject but can sometimes be overwhelmed by a great one. Such is the blessing and problem facing Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry. The film follows Weiwei, an acclaimed counter-cultural Chinese artist, as well known for his activism as he is for his photographic and installation art. First-time film maker Alison Klayman met the iconic artist four years ago and began filming and photographing him as he embarked on a series of high-profile artistic critiques of the Chinese Government. During her time with him, Weiwei creates a number of powerful artistic exposes of Ccp policy, including an incendiary investigative piece into the true death toll of the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan. He is assaulted, followed and kidnapped by police, works on building the Olympic stadium in Beijing and goes from being famous in artistic...

Documentaries have come a long way in the past twenty years, especially in the past decade. Ten years ago, I would have been at a loss for words had you asked me to name ten “great” documentaries released in a single year. Documentary film has developed into a popular and visible form of entertainment, while having a bigger effect on society, usually addressing important issues with the goal of informing the public and pushing for social change.
The shortlist of documentary nominees for the 84th Annual Academy Awards were announced recently. As expected, many bloggers have commented on their disappointment with the number of misfires. I doubt that these same bloggers have seen the majority of the films listed, so it is a bit unfair that they presume these 15 titles aren’t worthy of consideration. With that said, I can say that two of the best films I’ve seen...

Hoop Dreams might very well be the most acclaimed documentary of the 1990s, but its co-director, Chicago-based documentarian Steve James, has continued to create distinctive, relevant films in the near-20 year interval since that film’s release. His latest, The Interrupters, screened at Cinema Politica here in Montreal and so impressed the SOSers who witnessed it that we made sure to request a screener, with the express purpose of putting a James spotlight together – and now, with the help of special guests Derek Gladu and Michael Waldman, we finally got ‘er done. We are now four days into the Toronto International Film Festival which runs a total of ten days so I felt it would be best to look back at some of the coverage we’ve posted thus far. Admittedly we are all a bit behind but we do intend on catching up before the fest if over. So far this year the festival hasn’t been as exciting for me as compared to previous years. Most of my time is spent running around from one cinema to the next, networking and trying to find some time to maintain the site and do some writing. The first day is usually a write off spent picking up tickets, finding a place to stay and meeting up with some old friends, so unfortunately my movie watching only began on Friday evening. So I’ve decided that in the future, I will arrive in...

Our road to Tiff has been a long frustrating and complicated journey. Three years now we’ve gone without press accreditation which confused the fuck out of many people especially myself, given we receive press badges for every other major film festival in the world. So this year I’ve decided that come rain or shine, money or not, I’d find a way to get my crew over to the festival fully prepared to deliver the best coverage possible in hopes that this will be the last year we are rejected. Toronto correspondents Dave Robson and Michael Waldman will be attending various features and focussing heavily on the Midnight Madness and documentary programs, while Justine and I will head out for a few days to report on some of the bigger releases. But that isn’t all folks. Greg Ashman from the CriticalMassCast will be flying in from Vancouver to help us along,...

Seminal documentarian Joe Berlinger has made a career out of defining and disseminating stories that are as engaging and poignant as they are obsure. Every bit as relevant to the modern resurgence of popular narrative documentries as Errol Morris or Werner Herzog, Berlinger has shown his audiences tales of small-town fratricide, corporate corruption in the Ecuadoran rainforest and the previously unseen petty relationships of one of the world’s largest bands. However, he is best known for his expose of a grevious miscarriage of justice that began 18 years ago in West Memphis, Arkansas. His 1996 film Paradise Lost, which chronicled the arrest and trail of three teenagers for the horrific murder of three young boys, murders they clearly did not commit, has become a documentary classic. Following the release last week of the three men, known for years as the West Memphis Three, Paradise Lost can now also lay claim to...

The third in a series of documentaries about the West Memphis Three will have it’s world premiere at Tiff next month. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky continue to document the case of Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelly, whose lives took a dramatic turn recently when released in Jonesboro, Ark. because of new DNA evidence exonerating them of the crimes for which they had been convicted. It’s a quite long, complicated, unjust and deeply depressing story, so if you are unfamiliar with the case, I strongly recommend listening to episode 269 of the Sound On Sight podcast, in which we reviewed the original film and went into detail about what has been going on with the trail ever since. I would also recommend checking back in September during out Tiff coverage since Toronto correspondent Michael Waldman will be sitting down with Mr. Berlinger to discuss his trilogy of docs.

We here at Sound On Sight are big fans of Insidious, perhaps the only decent horror film so far of 2011. Michael Waldman, Justine Smith and myself all gave it a fairly positive review on episode 21 of the Sordid Cinema podcast. Beauty Day
Directed by Jay Cheel
2011, Canada
Most of the best documentary films are about outsiders, about people and events that exist within our society but reside in a fringe culture that most of us are unaware of or uneducated about. Whether examined for shock value, comedy, or in hopes of garnering some larger insight, outsiders have always been a staple, perhaps even a requirement, of engaging documentary film. From Errol Morris’ Mr. Death to Seth Gordon’s King of Kong, the best narrative documentaries revolve around subjects we can recognize as familiar enough to relate to in some way, but foreign enough to be novel and interesting. In Beauty Day, director Jay Cheel is fortunate enough to have found a perfect example of exactly that kind of compelling outsider and talented enough to craft more than just a voyeuristic look at his subject.

What did all of you enjoy about the show?
Though if Rahm had written it, it...

This is around the time of year that living in Miami starts to have a serious impact on my perception of the world. While we're having the occasional chilly evening, we're past the time of year that requires anything heavier than a sweatshirt. I have to keep reminding myself that it's winter in other parts of the world as opposed to the season we're having here, which I fondly refer to as "Not Hurricane Season." Mostly, this makes any of my friends and family who live north of Orlando begin to hate me with a burning passion, so I'm going to apologize in advance for the gloating I will definitely be doing over our mild weather and sunny days. Of course, I also have to go bathing suit shopping a clear four months before most of you. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00pm: "American Idol" on Fox. Two hour episode.

Happy Monday, Zoners!
I’m still smiling about last week’s scathingly hilarious, no-holds-barred takedowns of Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. Ever since the end of December, Stephen’s shows have been more sizzling hot than ever. And this week has a fantastic group of guests with lots of potential for fun, satire, and exploration. I can’t wait!
Monday, 1/24: Charlie Rose
Turnabout is fair play! In 2006 Stephen appeared as a guest on Rose’s eponymous TV show, and now it’s time for Rose to sit at Stephen’s desk. Rose anchors a nightly hour-long show on PBS, where he usually has one-to-one, in-depth conversations with his guests, who have ranged from politicians (Tony Blair) and playwrights (Harold Pinter) to musicians (Paul Simon) and movie stars (George Clooney). Occasionally, he also hosts special episodes that focus on a specific topic, and—seemingly as much of a workaholic as...

Very few people have had a great movie made about them. Fewer still have been the subject of a great documentary, mostly because docs about famous people are usually of the A&E variety or produced by those people as promotion. However, one man, the self-proclaimed Greatest Ever, has been the subject of nearly a dozen good documentaries. Here are the three best docs on the man who spent a quarter-century as the most famous person in the world.

A.K.A. Cassius Clay:
-
Originally produced for a short-term run in New York in 1970, A.K.A. Cassius Clay is an oddity. The majority of the film takes place on a sound stage, where Ali and legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato sit wearing suits, watching fights and arguing, largely about Ali’s claims of being the greatest fighter ever.
Cus had trained champions Jose Torres and Floyd Patterson and would...
