Folk horror coupled with the narrative mix of wilderness survival is a tried-and-tested recipe for engaging thrillers, as the insignificance of human existence realized in the midst of the primal unknown often produces the most effective version of fear. Alix Lambert’s The Woods Are Real, drawing on a similar formula, showcases its first quarter as a promising buildup for a potentially intriguing thriller set in the woodlands. However, soon enough, the effort to jam-pack too many issues into one single narrative starts showing its adverse effects, and as a result, by the end, the feature turns out to be too pretentious and convoluted for its own good.
There are instances where visual cues from classics like The Wicker Man or Midsommar can be identified, but the overall shoddy treatment nullifies any form of impact those could have had in the storyline. The bizarre choice of plot progression, contrived dialogues,...

"Bravery is real. Out here, bad people become good." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Woods Are Real, made by filmmaker Alix Lambert. This seems to be a shoddy "liberals are dumb!" film made by American conservatives, which is not surprising to see nowadays but it also doesn't have much of anything interesting to say either... The film is described as a "folk horror twist" on the story of Job from the Bible. Joba and Quincy are a wealthy Brooklyn couple who value charity above all. But when a friend returns from a country pilgrimage to challenge their bleeding hearts, they accept an invitation that will change their lives forever. They end up trapped in the woods with everything taken from them... Starring Matt Dellapina and Chinasa Ogbuagu as Joba and Quincy, with Campbell Scott as The Woodsman, Nick Westrate, Jeffrey Omura,...

Gravitas Ventures is back next month with the new movie The Woods Are Real, and Bloody Disgusting has been exclusively provided with the trailer for director Alix Lambert’s film.
The Woods Are Real will be available on Digital outlets March 12, 2024.
The film is said to put “a folk horror twist on the story of Job.” Watch the trailer below.
“Joba and Quincy are a privileged, fiercely progressive Brooklyn couple – they buy the right things, donate to the proper foundations, and march for every just cause. But when their friend, Caleb, returns from a country pilgrimage challenging their bleeding liberal hearts, Quincy is initially skeptical. But when Joba insists they take up an invitation to the same off-grid spot, they are met by a kitschy cabin in the woods peppered with analog devices of a simpler age: a rotary phone, religious iconography, an Edison machine.
“And when a curiously labeled record plays a menacing message,...

David Cronenberg's 2007 crime drama "Eastern Promises" offers several memorable scenes — the one that often comes up in conversation is that bath house fight to the death featuring Mortensen's Nikolai as vulnerable as a man can be (and he fared a lot better than most of us would in the same situation). But another sequence leans just as far into the Canadian director's obsession with the language and evolution of the body.
Nikolai, a "fixer" for the London arm of the Russian mafia, is rising up in the ranks. Before he can go further, he must be evaluated; such assessments are done with the prospect presenting his body to high-ranking members so they can read the resume marked upon it. The tattoos etched into his skin say, for starters, that Nikolai had served time in a Siberian prison, and that he was formerly a thief — it's written all over him.

In one of our occasional Filmmaker podcasts, director, artist and writer Alix Lambert interviews here stunt coordinator Mike Watson, whose work can be seen on HBO’s Westworld, which has its season finale tomorrow night. In addition to Westworld, Watson’s over 70 credits include films like Django Unchained, Hail Caesar!, Lost Highway, Rambo 3 and Silverardo. He was also the stunt coordinator for HBO’s Deadworld, which Lambert wrote for, and for the network’s subsequent David Milch series, John from Cincinnati, on which Lambert was an associate producer. In this wide-ranging conversation, the two discuss Watson’s background, what makes a good fight […]...

Filmmaker and Filmmaker contributor Alix Lambert is a guest producer on this week’s Theory of Everything, where she learns that it’s not just hipsters causing a revival in the audio cassette format but prisoners. Indeed, for most prisoners, cassettes are the only music delivery device they’re allowed. Listen to her episode, “Analog Time,” embedded here, as Lambert talks to some incarcerated men for whom cassette tapes are an escape, a salve, and even a medium of exchange. Meanwhile, Zach Taylor and Georg Petzold are finishing Cassette, “a feature-length documentary that celebrates the past, present, and future of an endearing musical […]...

“It’s Better in Mentor.” A shot of that roadside sign offers an early irony in director Alix Lambert’s new documentary, named after the Ohio town — and high school — where five students committed suicide between 2005 and 2010. Focusing on two families who brought lawsuits against Mentor High, alleging that its administration ignored a clear pattern of student bullying that led to the deaths of their children, Mentor is both heartbreaking and soberly resolute in its inquiry into the institutional forces and “culture of conformity” that fail young members of our communities. Ambiance Man is a new comedy web series from MOCAtv created and directed by filmmaker (and sometime Filmmaker contributor) Alix Lambert and starring, as the eponymous superhero, Portlandia‘s Fred Armisen. Short films can go a long way. Especially when they’re showcased at the Sundance Film Festival. The festival’s Shorts program, which was announced today, has a tradition of identifying remarkable filmmakers as well as introducing stories that ultimately make it to the big-screen as features. For example, David O. Russell brought his first film, a short titled Bingo Inferno to Sundance in 1987, while Half Nelson, which earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination, grew out of Ryan Fleck’s 2004 Sundance short titled, Gowanus, Brooklyn. “If you look back at the directors who got their start by having a short at Sundance,...

Documentarian, director, visual artist, and author Alix Lambert has yet another new project making its way around the world. Crime: The Animated Series — directed in partnership with award-winning animator Sam Chou — debuted as part of MOCAtv in Los Angeles back in July (here’s Filmmaker’s post about that event). One of these animated tales, Crime: Joe Loya — The Beirut Bandit, is playing the Toronto International Film Festival this week (click here for dates and times) and is sure to have audiences talking about just more than it being the shortest film to screen at Tiff. In the two-minute short, […]...

This afternoon, with poutine and local wine to mark the occasion, the Toronto International Film Festival announced their Canadian film selections. Programmers Steve Gravestock and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo proudly pronounced that this year both new and seasoned filmmakers had the “curiosity and courage to show troubling issues occurring in our country in new and exciting ways.” Past festival favorite (and one of my personal own as well) Xavier Dolan, the always controversial Bruce Labruce and Jennifer Baichwal’s films garnered applause from the crowd at the majestic Royal York ballroom. Titles sure to draw headlines and attention in the Canadian slate are Denis Villeneuve’s locally filmed ‘Enemy‘ which has Jake Gyllenhall playing a man with two identities, torn between a mistress and a wife. Villeneuve’s other recent feature ‘Prisoners‘ was previously announced as a festival title. It’s worth mentioning that two feature films being presented at...

Published in 2008, Alix Lambert’s Crime is one of the most fascinating books on the subject, bringing together in one gorgeously-produced volume interviews with various artists and dramatists who have chronicled crime as well as actual criminals themselves. But the book is just one element of Lambert’s practice surrounding this topic. Her Crime has taken the form of gallery shows, theater pieces and now, animated films. This week Lambert and animator Sam Chou will launch Crime: The Animated Series at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. From MoCA: Mocatv presents a screening of short animated episodes from our …...

Filmmaker — and occasional Filmmaker contributor — Alix Lambert (The Mark of Cain, Bayou Blue) recently directed three dreamy, color-drenched music videos for the band Kvb. Using a similar approach to performance footage but layering different imagery for each track, the three songs — “Captives,” “Hands” and “Shadows” form a loose trilogy. From the InCase/Room 205 site: While on a recent tour of the Western United States, London-based The Kvb moved heaven and earth to make this wonderfully meditative 3-part episode possible. Working with award-winning documentary filmmaker Alix Lambert (The Mark of Cain), cinematographer Conor Simpson, engineer Griffin Rodriguez and …...

Filmmaker and Filmmaker contributor Alix Lambert directed the new Shearwater video, which just went online. It’s from their new Animal Joy album, and, appropriately, there is animal imagery. I asked Alix about the origins of the video’s concept, and she emailed back:
When I first listened to the song, I just wrote down the lyrics that most jumped out at me. The bloody nose became a thread that I wanted to go through the film. Jonathan wanted to include Nicholas Kahn’s wonderful costumes, which I was thrilled about and from there I felt like there should be some kind of post-apocalyptic journey toward the ocean (shouldn’t there always be?). The great thing about making a music video (vs a feature narrative) is that there needs to be a nod toward a story — but a lot can be left mysterious.
Previously on the site, Alix interviewed this video’s d.

Wim Wenders's Pina opened in three theaters in New York over the weekend and, according to TheWrap, it's doing quite well so far. We already have two entries (post-Berlinale and Nyff), so this'll simply be a quick holiday roundup.
Pina, of course, is "a tribute to Pina Bausch, the German dancer and choreographer who died in 2009," explains Ao Scott in the New York Times. "Her work has appeared on film before; Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her uses the dance Café Müller as an emotional touchstone. That piece, an obstacle course of wooden chairs and wild emotions set to music by Henry Purcell, figures prominently in Pina, encapsulating both Bausch's aesthetic and Mr Wenders's desire to replicate on screen the depths and distances of the staging…. The cumulative effect is exhilarating and also a bit frustrating, since so many dances are included and woven together the audience does not...

Over the next six weeks director and Filmmaker contributor Alix Lambert is taking The Edit Center’s course in feature film editing. This is the first of her weekly blogs on her experience. — Editor
As a director, I have sat in the editing room for the better part of two decades. My long-time friend and brilliant editor, Hannah Neufeld has talked my off the ledge, dissuaded me from many bad ideas, and brought her own keen eye and internal rhythm to projects that we have worked on together over the years. Other editors (notably David Ritsher) have done the same for me. So, when my friend and recent co-director David McMahon (Bayou Blue) suggested that we take an intensive editing class at The Edit Center, I immediately agreed. I continue to want to collaborate with editors on my feature-length projects, but I have a number of short form projects on...

New York-based actor and playwright Jennifer Morris had always wanted to produce a short film chronicling her parents' divorce. More specifically, she wanted to capture the story behind the most hotly contested object in her parents' divorce: a Tiffany Lamp. During their contentious split in the '80s, Morris' father claimed the lamp was his rightful family inheritance, while her mother insisted it was hers "because she put her name on it" when the family was dividing up his mother's belongings after her death. The inanimate object that played such a minor role in their married life became the focal point of their split.
With plans for the short film underway, Morris, a co-founder of the Brooklyn-based theater company The Civilians, began to think about how she might bring this story to a different medium: the theater. So she approached her fellow Civillians actors--also children of divorce--Matthew Maher, Caitlin Miller,...

Two worthy Kickstarter projects have uploaded new trailers illustrating opposite but effective approaches to fundraising. The first is an irreverent long take for Jocelyn Towne’s I Am I, a first-person address from the director aided by a bed full of guest stars, including Marianna Palka, Jason Ritter and producers Cora Olsen and Jen Dubin.
The second is a new trailer for a project I’ve posted about before: Alix Lambert and Jill Peters’s He/She/He. Here, dialogue is withheld, and a beautiful piece of source music juxtaposed with the stunning images conveys the emotional power of the project.
He/She/He is in its final five days and is currently at 62% of its $30,000 goal. I Am I has a little over a month to go and is $17,000 towards its $100,000 goal. Check them both out and consider supporting them through Kickstarter.

Most of the time when I come across interesting articles or video on the web I clip them to my Evernote reader and check them out later on my Blackberry or iPad. Here, then, are a few things I’ve clipped that might interest you too. From CNN Money: “One in eight to cut cable and satellite TV in 2010.” What are the implications for online content creators? In Spring 2008 I wrote about Alix Lambert’s Crime book for Filmmaker. (The piece is not online, but you can check it out on her site.) Here, at The Graveyard Shift, she discusses taking the book and three actors on the road to “think tank the idea of crime as theater.” The making of Brent Green’s Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then is...

The writers and execs at HBO should be happy.
The premium cabler was the only television network with writers nominated from two shows apiece both in the dramatic and comedy series categories of the Writers Guild Awards, which announced TV and radio nominations Wednesday.
Writers on ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Lost also were among those nominated in the dramatic series category, joined by scribes from HBO's Deadwood and The Sopranos, and Fox's 24. Writers on HBO's Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm figured in comedy noms, along with those from NBC's 30 Rock and The Office, and Fox's Arrested Development.
NBC dominated the new series category, with noms for writers on its 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, along with ABC's Ugly Betty.
Nominations in film categories of the Writers Guild Awards are scheduled to be released Jan. 11.
The 2007 Writers Guild Awards are set for Feb. 11 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, with a simultaneous gala set for the Hudson Theater of the Millennium Broadway Hotel in New York.
