“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

It's kind of baffling that "The Santa Clause" is one of those franchises that's still going on today. It feels like something we should be talking about in hushed whispers. Like, "Hey, remember that Disney movie where Tim Allen commits manslaughter against Santa Claus and then undergoes a Cronenbergian physical transformation into Jolly Old St. Nick after inadvertently entering a contractual agreement to take his place? The '90s were wild, man." To be fair, I'm sure even Allen had no idea he would still be playing the cynical toy marketing director turned fabled gift-giver Scott Calvin almost 30 years after starring in the original "Santa Clause".
Yet, here we are in 2023, with season 2 of the Disney+ sequel series "The Santa Clauses" right around the corner. Season 1, much like the feature-length "Santa Clause" sequels before it, was far from a critical darling, but it absolutely has its supporters and brought in...

Eric Stonestreet, who comes off as a big teddy bear in ABC’s Modern Family, is about to get angry. Stonestreet is joining the cast of The Santa Clauses Season 2 as Magnus Antas, otherwise known as the Mad Santa. This not-so-jolly Christmas-themed character reigned in the 14th century and is returning to take Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) off the board and reclaim the North Pole. What a jerk! A deadly virus that wipes out most of the population; a scarcely inhabited post-apocalyptic world; a man traveling with a young girl he's just met (and accidentally adopted). I'm talking, of course, about the sensational HBO series — not the one that's currently taking Sunday nights by storm — but the one that dropped on HBO Max last year. "Station Eleven" is a miniseries following a small group of survivors, whose lives are connected in unexpected ways. We see their stories told through time, from the crumbling days of society to the new worlds they create in its wake. At the center of it are two people: Kirsten (a role shared by Matilda Lawler and Mackenzie Davis) and Jeevan (Himesh Patel), two strangers who find each other before everything falls apart. Unable to abandon the little girl he meets just when the world is ending, Jeevan sticks by Kirsten and heads to...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Sorry I’ve been a bit Mia recently. In addition to moving into a new apartment, I got hit with that darned flu. Now I’m back and ready for the holidays. But before we say goodbye to 2022, here’s one more column for you.
Darren Aronofsky and Chris Hemsworth may be working on a scripted feature together.
The two teamed up recently for the Disney+ series “Limitless With Chris Hemsworth,” which Aronofsky created. The show features the “Thor” star doing extreme physical challenges to understand the aging process. “I love him and I think he loves me,” Aronofsky tells me, laughing. “I think he’s a great human being and a gentleman and a great parent. He’s really an inspiration to me. And so I would love to work with him again. We’re trying to find the right piece.

Scott Calvin's reign on The Santa Clauses may not be ending as planned.
Disney+ made a shocking announcement this week:
The Santa Clauses will return for Season 2!
“This franchise has had a lasting impact for so many families, truly becoming part of their annual holiday traditions,” Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis said in a statement.
“Bringing it back as a series has been a true gift, and I’m grateful to our producing partners at 20th Television and, of course, Tim Allen and team, that we have yet another reason to celebrate this holiday season.”
The news is somewhat surprising. Before the series was even picked up, reports stated it would be a limited series revival that would seemingly bring Tim Allen's alter ego full circle.
Now, it sounds like there will be plenty of Scott and his family on the agenda because we're getting a full-fledged second season.

Patrick Somerville, showrunner of HBO Max’s limited series Station Eleven, has addressed the issue of shows disappearing from the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.
“TV world is very weird right now,” the writer and producer noted in a social media thread that highlights the topic from a creator’s perspective.
It follows the HBO Max slate review that led to shows such as Westworld, The Nevers and Love Life being pulled from the streamer as well as the cancellation of shows such as Minx, which had been renewed for a second season.
Somerville said that a DVD of his Paramount TV Studios-produced series was now available even if the creative team had been “caught off guard” by its appearance.
“The only way to really ensure shows remain available is that they generate too much interest (and completion) for anyone to justify removing them,” he tweeted. “If you take anything from this thread,...

Everything Everywhere All At Once is the movie miracle of the year. It’s an original film not based on a previously created intellectual property that became A24’s highest-grossing movie. It managed to combine the quirky comedy of the directors, The Daniels, as well as the martial arts action of star Michelle Yeoh, along with a poignant family story. It also saw the return of beloved 80s child actor Ke Huy Quan of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies.
The film was a big winner at the 2022 Gotham Awards, according to Variety. Quan took home the award for Best Supporting Performance after 20 years of being absent from the industry. Quan would humbly show his appreciation in his speech, “Oftentimes it is in independent films, where actors who otherwise wouldn’t get a chance, find their opportunities. I was that actor.” The film would also take...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a multiverse-spanning adventure, scored at the 32nd annual Gotham Awards, capturing the prize for best feature. It also nabbed a best supporting performance honor for Ke Huy Quan, a former child star best known for his work in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” who returned to acting after a nearly 20-year hiatus.
“Oftentimes it is in independent films, where actors who otherwise wouldn’t get a chance, find their opportunities,” Quan said in an emotional speech. “I was that actor.”
Other notable winners included Danielle Deadwyler, who nabbed a best leading performance prize for her work as a grieving mother in “Till.” The Gothams’ acting prizes are gender-neutral, which meant that Deadwyler not only competed with the likes of Cate Blanchett in “Tár,” but that she also beat out contenders such as Brendan Fraser in “The Whale” and Paul Mescal in “Aftersun.”
