Brian Watson is stepping away from his role as general manager of Paramount’s television stations in Detroit, ending a career with the company that spans more than two decades.
Watson’s last day as general manager of Wwj-tv and independent sister-station Wkbd (Channel 50) will happen on May 10, according to a memo circulated to employees this week and obtained by The Desk on Tuesday.
His resignation comes after a month of internal discussions with CBS News & Stations President Jennifer Mitchell, the memo said. Mitchell is expected to communicate with Wwj-tv and Wkbd employees directly in the coming days as Watson transitions out of his role, the memo said.
It was not clear if Watson’s decision was entirely his own, or if he was coerced by Mitchell or someone else at Paramount to step away from his duties. An email sent to Mitchell seeking additional...

There’s a new player entering the world of syndicated game shows.
CBS Stations has picked up the syndicated game show The Flip Side, hosted by Jaleel White (aka former Family Matters favorite Steve Urkel). The series will debut on CBS Stations across the country beginning in the fall.
The Flip Side will pit two teams of players against one another to “test them on how they think two different groups of people feel about the same issue. Teams choose from multiple choice answers, and whoever has the best intuition on human behavior will find themselves richer.”
“I have had fun being a celebrity contestant on numerous game shows, but I’ve always really wanted to be the host, giving people money and making their day!” White said in a statement announcing the series. “When I first heard this concept, I immediately wanted to be the ringleader of this entertaining,...

Drew Barrymore’s daytime talk show is sticking around for another year.
CBS-owned stations, which serve as the flagship station group for the syndicated show, have picked up a fifth season of The Drew Barrymore Show. The renewal for the 2024-25 season comes three months into the show’s fourth run — and four months after Barrymore drew the ire of Hollywood writers in announcing plans to restart her show during the Writers Guild of America Strike.
In September, Barrymore announced that her talk show would begin production on season four without writers, saying at the time, “I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience. I hope for a resolve for everyone as soon as possible.”

After a late start to its fourth season and behind-the-scenes turmoil, The Drew Barrymore Show has received and early, drama-free renewal for a fifth season on the CBS Stations.
It is the first pickup for the syndicated daytime talker since the major reorganization at the show’s producer and distributor CBS Media Ventures, which was put under the purview of Wendy McMahon, now President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
The renewal also comes after a rocky fall for The Drew Barrymore Show whose host originally announced a Sept. 18 return, while the writers were still striking, before reversing the decision amid picketing of the show and outcry from WGA members.
Season 4 instead launched post-strike on Oct. 16 but without the program’s three WGA-member writers who declined to return and had to be replaced.

Local news is still an incredibly important facet of TV for many viewers. A recent survey found 45% of cable users said live news or sports programming was the top reason they still preferred using that method to watch TV, and if streaming ever wants to fully replace cable, it will need to offer a robust lineup of live news.
That’s why the latest announcement from CBS and the free local news streaming platform Local Now is so important. On Wednesday, the two sides revealed a new agreement that will send 14 locally-themed CBS News stations to the service for free. Drew Barrymore has made the surprising announcement that her talk show will return to the air, despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. Barrymore explained on Instagram, “I am also making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it, but this is bigger than just me.”

It has stayed off the air since the strike began on May 2nd, but has now (unfortunately) decided to return without its writers.”

Last week, it was announced that “The Drew Barrymore Show” was resuming production, with the fourth season kicking off in mid-September.
When the WGA initiated strike action back in May, Barrymore was among the first to stand in solidarity with striking writings, announcing that she was stepping away from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards, in support of the strike. When her show returns, it will be without writers.
“I own this choice. We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind.”
One wrinkle to the show’s planned return, however, will be WGA picketers outside her show’s studios, which will mean audience members will be forced to cross a picket line in order to attend tapings.
“The Guild has, and will continue to, picket any struck show that continues production during the duration of the strike,” WGA spokesperson Jason Gordon told Cracked.

The Drew Barrymore Show will be returning to TV screens sooner than expected amid the writers and actors strikes, even as the WGA says it will picket the show’s studios Monday and Tuesday as a result.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Drew Barrymore announced that her daytime talk show will begin its fourth season soon, in accordance with the rules of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, a spokesperson for the Writers Guild told The Hollywood Reporter that Drew is a struck show, and union members are set to picket outside of Barrymore’s studios Monday and Tuesday in New York City.

Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews will take direct oversight of CBS News, the latest move in a broader restructure of operations at Paramount Global’s CBS business.
Matthews, a CBS News veteran who once supervised the Washington bureau and had been put in charge of overall newsgathering, will now have top editorial oversight for CBS News across all platforms. She will oversee all CBS News programs, bureaus, global newsgathering, streaming and digital editorial, as well as standards and practices, special events, politics, elections and surveys, social, the race and culture unit and CBS News Radio.
She will report to Wendy McMahon, who was put in charge earlier Monday of CBS News, local stations and syndication efforts. CBS appears to be streamlining some of its businesses. Neeraj Khemlani, who had worked as a co-president alongside McMahon overseeing CBS News, on Sunday announced he would step down from his role to tackle a new content production deal.

CBS Media Ventures President Steve LoCascio is retiring after 34 years at the company and its previous iterations as the division will become part of the portfolio of Wendy McMahon, named this morning as President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
The consolidation is not surprising. LoCascio’s departure comes amid a seismic changes in the syndication business marked by a major contraction in first-run syndication, primarily in the talk shoe arena. CBS Media Ventures and CBS TV Distribution’s top shows, Judge Judy, Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray, all ended their long runs in the last few years. Judge Judy has charted a new path, with its reruns remaining a ratings leader.

Neeraj Khemlani, the president and co-head of CBS News and CBS Television Stations, is exiting his role at the company after two years.
Khemlani sent a note to CBS staff announcing his departure, sharing that he will be moving on to a new chapter with a multiyear, multiplatform first-look deal with CBS to develop content like documentaries, scripted series and books for Simon & Schuster. Simon & Schuster, like CBS, is part of Paramount Global, but the conglomerate agreed to sell the book publishing giant to private equity firm Kkr on Aug. 7 for $1.62 billion.

Neeraj Khemlani is stepping down as the president and co-head of CBS News and Stations.
In a memo to staffers on Sunday, Khemlani said that he had signed a first look deal with the network to develop documentaries, scripted series and books for Simon & Schuster.
“It’s an opportunity that will allow me to write, report and develop stories that I’ve long wanted to pursue,” he wrote.
George Cheeks, the president and CEO of CBS Entertainment Group, said that he will update staffers soon with information about new leadership and structure for the news division. That may come as soon as Monday, and there is some speculation that Wendy McMahon, who was named president and co-head of CBS News and Stations in 2021, will take on a new or expanded role. Khemlani and McMahon were named to their posts in a restructuring that combined two divisions of the company.

The headlines coming out of CBS News will soon be guided by a new executive.
Neeraj Khemlani, who arrived at the Paramount Global unit in 2021 to oversee CBS News and local stations along with Wendy McMahon, is leaving his role running the unit that produces “60 Minutes,” “CBS Evening News” and “Face The Nation,” among other programs. Khemlani told CBS News staffers Sunday that he has decided to exit and will instead pursue a new multi-year first-look deal with CBS that has him developing content including books for Simon & Schuster, documentaries and scripted series.
Many senior news executives and anchors sign contracts for three years or more. Khemlani has during a two-years-plus tenure helped to rework CBS News’ morning programming; eliminate divisions between the linear news staff and CBS News streaming operations; bolster its investigative unit; and inject new talent into the famously insular division, including Robert Costa, Natalie Morales and Cecilia Vega.

Since grade school, Wendy McMahon knew she wanted to be in local broadcast news. Now president of CBS News and Stations, she’s achieved a path she set for herself early on. But it took getting out of her comfort zone and embracing a challenging digital role to lay the groundwork for her current role — one where she’s embracing streaming alongside linear TV as the next step in her career.
McMahon ran marketing and promotion at local TV stations for 11 years before joining ABC in 2009. In 2015, she got an opportunity to take a broader digital role at the Disney-owned station group. Her response: “Why not?”
“It was a role that required deep curiosity, open-mindedness, vulnerability, and I had to show up with a willingness to learn,” McMahon told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “After being in a business for 15 years at that time where I felt really grounded,...

Changes are coming to eight CW stations that are owned by CBS.

The Streamable has learned that a collection of eight CW affiliates around the country that are owned and operated by CBS will not renew their affiliation agreements and will become independent stations starting on Sept. 1, 2023. Paramount Global owns CBS while Nexstar became the primary owner of The CW last August. This development is latest in a number of recent confrontations between the media companies.
The impacted channels are in the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, and Tampa regions. These changes mean that the CBS stations group owns and operates 14 CBS affiliates and 13 independent channels. The company is apparently planning to make these stations outlets that feature additional Paramount content.

Daytime talker “The Drew Barrymore Show” will be back for the 2023-2024 TV season. The show has been renewed for a fourth year on CBS stations, which air it in key markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
The news was announced Tuesday by CBS Media Ventures president Steve LoCascio. The renewal comes following this year’s format change, in which “The Drew Barrymore Show” was reconstructed as two half-hour episodes that stations could run together back-to-back or be split apart to air separately.
On many CBS stations, that meant launching a new half-hour local newscast from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., serving as a lead-in to the first half-hour of “The Drew Barrymore Show.” Under the new structure, CBS stations also aired both half-hours of the show on its duopoly stations in markets where the company owns two stations.

From the desert to the sea, all local newscasts airing on Los Angeles’ TV stations Kcbs-tv and Kcal-TV will be rebranded Kcal News as the Paramount Global-owned outlets seek to better capitalize on Kcal’s reputation for breaking news coverage.
As of today, the station previously known on air as KCAL9 will formally be branded as Kcal News in all dayparts. The refresh coincides with the today’s launch of a seven-hour morning news block on Kcal, starting at 4 a.m., that will also run in part on Kcbs, known on-air as CBS2.
The Kcal rebranding and the morning news push are initiatives championed by Wendy McMahon, president and co-head of CBS News and Television Stations, who joined Paramount Global from Disney in mid-2021.
McMahon told Variety the decision on adopting the Kcal News brand was born out of research showing that the Kcal moniker was immediately identified with live local news.

After a brief hiatus, Natalie Morales is back on the news beat.
In one of her first efforts for CBS News, Morales was called upon to explore a decades-old murder in Colorado for “48 Hours.” “It was more like a baptism by ice,” confesses Judy Tygard, the executive producer of the long-running program. “We had Natalie traipsing through the forest and the snow and out on these bitter, cold, deserted passes in Colorado, and we gave her a very simple task: Master a 40 year old case in a few weeks.”
On Saturday, Morales will tell viewers about an investigation into the 1982 murders of two young women, Annette Schnee, 21 and Bobbie Jo Oberholtzer, 29, near the resort ski town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The case had gone cold until investigators – some of whom have been trying to solve it for years – were able to get a DNA match from evidence via a public genealogy database.

Gayle King has signed a new deal with CBS News, after speculation about her future with the pending expiration of her contract.
She’ll continue to co-host CBS Mornings, and told listeners on her SiriusXM show, Gayle King in the House, “I officially signed on the dotted line. So I will be with CBS a little longer.”
There had been some speculation about her future, but CNN reported last week that she had decided to stay at the network.
On her show, she also addressed some of the speculation about her future, including that she wanted to be in California and that she has been courted by other networks.
“I don’t know why people thought that just because you have a grandchild now all of a sudden you just want to give up your career and go sit in California,” King said. “No. I still, you know, I still...

Gayle King, who over ten years at CBS News has become one of that ViacomCBS division’s most recognizable personnel, has signed a deal to stay for another contract cycle.
“I still feel that in many ways I’m just getting started,” King told listeners of her SiriusXM radio program on Friday.
Speculation has risen in recent weeks whether CBS News would keep both King and her colleague Norah O’Donnell, both of whom had contracts that were set to lapse this year. King last signed an extension with CBS News in 2019, when Susan Zirinsky, the former CBS News president, rebuilt the network’s morning-news program, now known as “CBS Mornings,” with her at the center. King has in recent years gained notice for her interviews with figures making waves in popular culture, including R Kelly.

Edward R. Murrow and Fred W. Friendly were journalism visionaries whose moves at CBS in the 1950s continue to define that company’s news division. Yet even they might be surprised to see where some of their ideas are heading.
CBS News is set to revive two landmark programs created under the auspices of one or both of those broadcasters, “Person to Person” and “CBS Reports,” but retooled for the streaming era. Norah O’Donnell will launch a new “Person to Person” series of one-on-one interviews with newsmakers and people of interest, while Gayle King is set to kick off a new series of “CBS Reports” documentaries and special reports on February 25 with a deep dive into the death of Trayvon Martin. Both series will run on the CBS News Steaming Network, part of a large-scale overhaul and expansion of the broadband news hub once known as Cbsn that initially debuted...
