Jessica Henwick (“Glass Onion”) and Alisha Weir (“Abigail”) have been tapped for new animated feature “The Land of Sometimes.”
They will join “Star Wars” icon Ewan McGregor and “The Crown” star Helena Bonham Carter on the project, which also features one of the final performances from the late “Monty Python” alum Terry Jones.
A first look of the film, which is repped by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution for global sales, is set to be shown to buyers in Cannes next week with director Leon Joosen (“The Little Mermaid”) on hand to introduce the project.
“Be careful what you wish for!” reads the logline. “Twins Alfie and Elise get more than they bargained for when the Wish Collector takes them to an island full of wonder, with ever-changing seasons. They face a mechanical foe, fantastical creatures and a truth that shines brighter than any wish: the power of family.”

It could have been a straightforward documentary about the David Bowie story — but who wants straightforward when it comes to Bowie? Instead, Moonage Daydream is a gloriously innovative trip into the Thin White Duke’s mind, written, directed, and edited by Brett Morgen. He specializes in portraits of twisted artists, whether that means Hollywood mogul Robert Evans in The Kid Stays In The Picture or Kurt Cobain in Montage of Heck. But his latest goes even deeper, a full immersion in the gaudiest, glammiest of rock-star lives. In one of...

Brett Morgen, the freewheeling director behind “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” “Jane” and “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” is finalizing a top-secret David Bowie project based on thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the musician, most of it previously uncirculated, sources confirm to Variety.
Morgen has been at work on the Bowie film, for which an official title has not been disclosed, for the last four years. A source close to the production cryptically describes it as “neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material.”
Sources say live concert footage plays a central role in the film, and that Morgen is eyeing an IMAX release. The filmmaker wears a number of hats on the project, taking on editing, writing and producing duties, in addition to directing.
A Sundance Film Festival premiere in late January could be in the cards.

"One thing I don't like: is any kind of glitter." HBO has debuted a trailer for a documentary film titled Mel Brooks: Unwrapped, which is debuting streaming starting in December. This biopic doc is a look back at comedy icon Mel Brooks' legendary comedy career in film and television, a feature extension of a segment that British filmmaker Alan Yentob originally produced for the BBC. With Brooks bringing back the classic musical "Young Frankenstein" to the London stage again, Yentob went to talk to Brooks. He originally met Brooks 35 years before, also interviewing him for another segment titled "I Thought I Was Taller" and now they catch up again. We all know Mel Brooks is a certified genius, so spending any time with him and also hearing his stories (and his endless jokes) is always good for the soul. Looking forward to this watching this. Here's the first official trailer...

6 More Filmmaking Tips From Werner Herzog
If there’s anyone who deserves a second Filmmaking Tips column, it’s Werner Herzog. It’s been almost four years since we posted the first list of his advice to fellow soldiers of cinema, and there’s just so much more to learn from the legend. He actually has his own Rogue Film School, where he directly imparts his wisdom to students during weekend seminars. He also leads a new online course at MasterClass, which began this week, where he talks about all facets of fiction and nonfiction filmmaking in a six-hour video course. He does many interviews (this week he participated in a Reddit Ama) and shares his philosophies and strategies often. Not even two of these columns properly sums it all up.
So, as is often the case, this is just an introduction to some essential tips from a unique artist and craftsman. Herzog...

A transcript of television writer Dennis Potter's final interview is Aliya's non-fiction book club choice for this month...
Dennis Potter was a television writer who shaped British TV drama over three decades. His final interview took place in April 1994, only a few weeks before his death. He knew there wasn't long left, and he had things he wanted to say about his life, his writing, and the society he lived in. It was that rarest of moments - a chance to evaluate everything that has gone before without having to worry about what will come after.
It's a moving interview to watch, but I found at the time of viewing it that it was almost too much to take in. As much as you're listening to what he's saying and engaging with it, you're also looking at a very ill person and your thoughts are also taken up with...

When held up to the heady heights of its BAFTA-winning spiritual predecessor Twenty Twelve, the first series of W1A fell short on occasions.
But with a new series opener in which a high-level management power struggle starts simmering alongside the usual japes, hi-jinks and gaffes at Broadcasting House, the BBC's self-flagellating satire is at last hitting its stride.
Hugh Bonneville's still the star of the show as Ian Fletcher, keeping a sharp focus on charter renewal as his contemporaries in the Way Ahead Task Force fall over themselves (almost literally at one point) to get one over on their professional rivals. There's whispers of a new senior post at stake, and everyone seems to have their eye on it.

Responding to industry demand, new standards have been accepted so that UK broadcasters can now accept programmes in the Super 16mm format for broadcast on HD channels.
This move comes after a campaign led by Directors UK to advocate that filmmakers should be able to make a choice to shoot and deliver on both film and digital formats. The lobbying was supported by the likes of Kodak, Deluxe, Panavision, i-Dailies, Cinelab, and the British Society of Cinematographers.
The BBC has reviewed its delivery requirements after the BBC HD channel was closed and BBC One and Two launched in HD. (BBC Three and Four HD channels will accept the new standards when they launch.)
The Digital Production Partnership (Dpp) has published a new supplement to its delivery document, giving details of how Super 16mm acquired programme should be used by all the Dpp broadcasters: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, S4C, BSkyB and BT...

Jennifer Saunders has declared that an Absolutely Fabulous movie adaptation will "never happen".
The 55-year-old creator and star of the hit BBC comedy revealed that she fears the long-running sitcom may be ruined if a feature film were to be made.
Speaking to Glamour magazine about the prospect of a movie, Saunders replied: "It'll never happen.
"We've been talking about it for so long and now I've just got this feeling that Ab Fab is in such a nice place now - if we made the film there would be such a danger that we could ruin it."
Saunders - who plays Edina Monsoon - and co-star Joanna Lumley reprised their roles in a number of Ab Fab specials, including an Olympics-themed one-off episode in 2012.
Lumley, who plays Patsy Stone in the show, has previously said that she would be happy to star in a film adaptation of the comedy.

Jennifer Saunders has hit out at the "top-heavy" BBC and its creative director Alan Yentob.
The actor and writer told Glamour that the broadcaster has gone "corporate" and become "an executive-run place for idiots".
"It's unrecognisable now. It's become top-heavy in such an ugly way," Saunders said.
"They went corporate instead of being what they should be which is a national resource which trains people and curates the best programmes, encourages talent and provides great news.
"They just became an executive-run place for idiots."
She added: "It's just so weird that they could put people off coming into the building the way they do now.
"How is Alan Yentob still allowed in the building? There are questions that need to be answered!"
Saunders said that BBC staff used to be capable but now heads of department are incapable of making a decision. She also criticised the alleged misuse of licence fee money.

With their sitcom House Of Fools recently announced, we celebrate the enduring comedy brilliance of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer...
Readers of a certain age may remember the first time they saw Vic and Bob on television. For some, it may have been the 25th of May 1990, the fateful night "Britain's top light entertainer and singer" Vic Reeves burst onto screens with an absurdly fast, lounge-act rendition of The Monkees' I'm A Believer. In the background, his cohort Bob Mortimer looked on admiringly, dressed in the stovepipe hat and vast sideburns of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
For many viewers, this was a first glimpse inside the strange world of a comedy duo who'd already garnered a cult following in London pubs and clubs in the mid-1980s. Having impressed the likes of Jonathan Ross and Alan Yentob with their surreal, apparently semi-improvised comedy, Vic and...

The Digital Public Space is set to give unprecedented access to the nation's cultural heritage – thanks to a small BBC team
It is nine years until the BBC's centenary in 2022, the date originally set by its former director of archive content, Roly Keating, for digitising the bulk of the vast archives that date back to the birth of the corporation. Given the gargantuan scale of the task – which includes 1m hours of programming, 10m stills, the world's largest sheet music collection and documentation for every programme – many might have given up. Instead, a determined team has been working on an even more ambitious scheme, the Digital Public Space, to open as much of this material as possible to the public.

If you don't know who Mel Brooks is, you could be a teenager, born without a sense of humor or someone who hasn't been paying attention for a really long time. Just in case, Brooks, 86, is one of the rare performers known as an Egot (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner -- multiple times.
A comedian, actor, singer, director, producer and lyricist, Brooks is the brains behind "The Producers," "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein." He chats openly with his pal, Alan Yentob of the BBC, in an hourlong conversation, "Mel Brooks Strikes Back!" Monday, Dec. 10., on HBO. He had another open and long talk with Zap2it, condensed here.
Zap2it: What is your favorite one-liner?
Mel Brooks: "Walk this way." Don't ask me why. Groucho did it, and the double entendre was he walked in a funny way.
Zap2it: What's your favorite song?
Mel Brooks: It's probably "High Anxiety.

Peter Mullan's bravura performance wasn't enough to rescue Channel 4's incoherent four-part drama about a Brighton crime boss suffering from dementia

The Fear ran across four consecutive nights for a total of four hours. The question is whether that was two hours or three hours too long. Those who argue that it was four hours too long have a strong case, but that would be unfair to Peter Mullan, who gave a powerful performance in difficult circumstances.
He played Richie Beckett, a Brighton crime boss with fast-moving dementia. He went from administrative incompetence to hopeless incontinence in about as much time as it would have taken him to pull his trousers down.
