The real story begins long before you know it in Desert Road, a very smart, trippy chiller that plays with the conventions of survival horror and takes them in a wholly unexpected and, ultimately, really quite moving direction. Making her directorial debut, Shannon Triplett shows a sophisticated grasp of genre dynamics, with a bold use of space — a stretch of the Mojave Desert doubling for Death Valley — that proves more and more gripping as the film’s mysteries unfold. At which point, its boundaries begin to blur, slipping between horror and sci-fi in a way that recalls a hypnotic blend of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless and Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls.
The woman in question is Clare Devoir (Kristine Froseth), a twentysomething photographer who is throwing in the towel after too many disappointments as a struggling artist in Los Angeles. Clare is driving home to...

A woman finds herself trapped in a harrowing nightmare in writer/director Shannon Triplett’s feature debut, Desert Road, but not in the way you’d expect. While the road trip thriller traps its protagonist in place on a desolate stretch of highway, tossing harrowing encounters and obstacles her way against a ticking clock, a sci-fi twist and a tremendous cast find new ground to explore the eternal, existential question: What if?
A young Woman is already at a crossroads in her life when she pulls into a remote gas station in the middle of nowhere. Doubting her L.A. future in photography, the Woman has decided to pack up and make the long road trip home to start again. Rattled by a suspicious run-in with the gas station attendant (Max Mattern), the Woman eagerly attempts to get back on the road, but a car accident leaves her trapped in...

Before joining The Walking Dead universe as Pearl Thorne in The Ones Who Live, Lesley-Ann Brandt starred in a variety of roles for TV and film. The South African actor is well-known for taking on projects in horror, fantasy, and other traditionally “nerdy” genres, having appeared in shows like Gotham, The Librarians, and most notably Lucifer.
With a variety of roles under her belt, here’s where else you’ve seen Lesley-Ann Brandt before.
Lucifer
As mentioned previously, Brandt is most known for her role as Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) right-hand Mazikeen in the hit TV series Lucifer. Mazikeen a.k.a. Maze is known for her fierce loyalty, though she sometimes struggles to adapt her brash nature to the human world. Brandt does a phenomenal job of portraying Maze’s growth from demon with a penchant for sadistic torture to a slightly more vulnerable and human demon with a penchant for sadistic torture.

The recent influx of people streaming USA Network's legal drama "Suits" on Netflix has been generally attributed to what one might call the Meghan Markle factor. Personally, however, I like to pretend it's because everyone suddenly discovered there's a show where Gina Torres plays Jessica Lourdes Pearson, an attorney whom they would gladly let step on their neck.
The "Firefly" and "Hannibal" fan-favorite was part of the main "Suits" cast for its first six seasons, prior to her character leaving the world of New York City-based corporate law for Chicago to be with her paramour, Jeff Malone (D. B. Woodside). Who knew lawyering could be so romantic? (We'll ignore that whole thing about Jessica losing her license to practice the law in New York.)
Naturally, anytime a beloved actor departs a show, fans are bound to start wondering if it was the result of some behind-the-scenes turmoil or even...

USA Network legal drama Suits has entered an important second phase in its TV life. After airing throughout the 2010s on basic cable, the show about a very busy New York law firm has become an unexpected hit in the streaming world.
Though all nine seasons of the series have been available to stream on Peacock for awhile now, the addition of the first eight seasons to Netflix on June 17 helped supercharge its popularity. According to Nielsen, Suits has broken streaming records with the number of minutes it was streamed across multiple platforms this summer. Anecdotally, you may even know of several folks cranking through the show’s 134 episodes right now – or maybe that person is even you!
While Suits‘ “second phase” as a bona fide streaming phenomenon is an impressive achievement for any show with cable origins, there is still one more phase in the TV life cycle it needed to conquer: a spinoff.

The USA Network legal drama Suits has seen a surge in popularity on Netflix and Peacock over the summer, with over 3.1 billion minutes of the show watched across both streamers from June 26 to July 2. Nielsen predicts that the show’s popularity on streaming will only continue to grow, given that 75% of the views calculated during that time were generated by only the first three of the series’ nine seasons. With the show pulling such huge numbers nearly four years after its finale, many people have been wondering if the actors and writers will gain anything from the billions of views their show is bringing to these streaming services.
The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023 have brought to light the stark pay discrepancies between broadcast TV and streaming, especially when it comes to residuals. Actors and writers working for broadcast and cable shows receive payments when their episodes appear in reruns and syndication.

SAG-AFTRA members have now gotten a fuller look at what was on the negotiating table between their union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers during more than a month of negotiations. The general response to the 12-page document, which was released late Monday night, was a mixture of surprise and disappointment over what the studios allegedly proposed or wouldn’t engage on, according to the union.
“My eyes popped out of my head when I read these deal points last night. Unreal,” Star Trek: Discovery star Wilson Cruz tweeted on Tuesday. The Righteous Gemstones actress Kristen Johnston, who picketed at Disney on Tuesday, also tweeted a brief but pointed response: “They actually hate us.”
Antonio Rael, who was on the Fox picket line in L.A., generally described the counterproposals as “insulting,” while fellow actor and union member Laura Martinez said, “They know we’re not going to agree to that.

Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers explore uncharted territory in their romantic Netflix adaptation "The Perfect Find," starring as 40- and 20-something-year-old coworkers who get into a "forbidden fruit" entanglement. The movie, based on bestselling author Tia Williams's novel of the same name, follows the meet-cute-gone-wrong of fired-and-rehired fashionista Jenna (Union) and her random fling-turned-colleague Eric (Powers) - who happens to be the son of Jenna's tyrant boss, Darcy (Gina Torres). The Perfect Find is a film directed by Numa Perrier starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers. Based on the novel by Tia Williams.
It’s Friday, the perfect day for a romantic comedy with enough arguments to enchant the most sensitive hearts and also with enough tests to scare away (definitely) those who are looking for something more in cinema.
Another romantic comedy? Yes, but this one has its very funny moments and, despite the formula, manages to entertain thanks to the brilliant and inspired performances of its supporting characters.
Alisha Hinds and Gina Torres are spectacular and add the finishing touch to this romantic comedy that, this time, really is a comedy.

Boldness defines Numa Perrier’s soapy romantic comedy The Perfect Find. Characters make unbelievable decisions in the name of love. Grand proclamations are yelled from across parks and outside apartment buildings. Everyone’s dressed in the most maximalist attire: loud prints, geometrically striking jewelry, intense hairstyles. It all seems rather unbelievable until you remember the ridiculousness is part of the fun.
Like any good romantic comedy, The Perfect Find constructs a world into which you can escape. Jenna (Gabrielle Union) is a 40-something (the ambiguity of her age is significant to the plot) fashion editor who has spent the last year recovering from a devastating public breakup. Her 10-year relationship with Brian (D.B. Woodside), an equally ambitious careerist, crashed profoundly after Jenna sought clarity about their future. To escape the tabloid frenzy, Jenna moves back in with her parents.
Perrier economically reviews this backstory in the film’s opening credits,...

‘The Perfect Find’ Review: Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers Charm in Fashion-Forward Netflix Swooner
Fashionista Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) took quite the tumble from her position in New York’s world of style. In “The Perfect Find” — Netflix’s visually vibrant, cinema-loving, if not quite perfect, rom-com — her professional and romantic plummet is documented in opening credits that cleverly use an animated collage to relate her story.
So, when we meet Jenna in person ,she’s without a job, and her man (D.B. Woodside) of 10 years has moved on … or so it seems. The 40-year-old is sporting baggy sweats, and not because she’s headed to the gym. She’s been living in her parents’ home licking her wounds, for a year, when her mother calls her out on it. The scene between mother (Janet Hubert) and grown-ass daughter is amusing and promising. As are the musical and visual choices director Numa Perrier makes that evoke Old Hollywood in a film with characters decidedly not Old Hollywood.

Spoilers for "The Night Agent" follow.
"The Night Agent" proved to be a success for Netflix, so it's no surprise the platform has renewed the political thriller for a second season. Adapted from a novel by Matthew Quirk, "The Night Agent" follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). He works in the White House's basement, and every shift, he sits next to a phone, waiting for calls from "Night Action" agents in case of an emergency. Peter's first call comes from Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a niece of two Night Action agents. Rose narrowly escaped a home invasion that claimed her aunt and uncle's lives; she and Peter get thrown into a conspiracy that goes up to the Oval Office.
Quirk's novel was a standalone story, but the series had a more open ending — the creators were aware more seasons were on the table. After preventing the assassination of President...

“The Night Agent” might not be pulling “Wednesday” numbers, but the new thriller series had a very strong first week on Netflix.
The Shawn Ryan-created thriller topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV series list in its first week of availability, with 168.71 million hours viewed. That’s the most for Week 1 of a new Netflix series, English-language or otherwise, since “Wednesday.” And we’re only counting four days of viewing, as “The Night Agent” debuted on a Thursday; Sunday night is Netflix’s weekly cutoff.
Beyond new debuts, “The Night Agent’s” start was the single best week for a show since Season 2 of “Ginny & Georgia” premiered to 180 hours viewed. Last week marked the third-biggest week for the debut of a Netflix show since the streamer started publicizing the Top 10 lists.
“Wednesday,” of course, still ranks at No. 1 in terms of new-series debuts, after it opened to a...
