Exclusive: Last year’s awards cycle was a big one for indie public relations firm EBComs, which specializes in behind-the-camera talent. Out of the year’s five cinematography Oscar nominees, three were EBComs clients, and the company ultimately walked away with two wins —James Friend and Paul Rogers. This month, the company, headed by Aussie native Meredith Emmanuel, celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Emmanuel launched the indie firm in 1998, which has quietly grown in size and ambition. The company, headquartered in Los Angeles, now spans a network of offices in Sydney, and London. In 2022, Emmanuel expanded the leadership team, promoting three senior team members to partners: Ranjinder Hans, Vice President, Talent Relations and Awards; Mackinley Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer; and Mary Keeler, Chief Financial Officer. Studiocanal will launch rights sales at Cannes on “Kangaroo,” the first Australia-New Zealand production from the local arm of the French film and TV group Canal Plus. The film is inspired by the real-life story of The Kangaroo Sanctuary founder Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns, who has been saving and raising baby kangaroos in Central Australia since 2005.
The narrative is shaped as a heart-warming family comedy about a down-on-his-luck pro surfer who becomes stranded in an Outback town after a car accident. There, he teams up with 11-year-old Indigenous girl. The pair form an unlikely friendship working together to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned baby kangaroos (joeys). The endeavor proves to be life-changing for both.
Kate Woods is attached to direct from a script by Harry Cripps (“The Dry,” “Penguin Bloom,” “Back to the Outback”).

Mitzi Ruhlmann.
Mitzi Ruhlmann was five years old when she saw Phillip Noyce’s Stolen Generation drama Rabbit-Proof Fence, perhaps not an ideal experience for someone so young, but it had a profound impact.
From that moment on she was determined to become an actor, not a far-fetched ambition for a girl who spent a lot of time on film and TV sets watching her dad, cinematographer Danny Ruhlmann, at work.
(Ruhlmann Senior’s credits include the features The Nugget, The Night We Called It a Day and Little Fish and, most recently, the Netflix series Messiah, created by Aussie Michael Petroni and co-directed by Kate Woods, and Jupiter’s Legacy.)
Last month the 21-year-old came home after seven months in La auditioning for numerous roles. She’ll go back in February for pilot season.

Werner Film Productions’ Joanna Werner has teamed up with Germany’s Zdf Enterprises and Wild Sheep Content, the fledgling production outfit formed by Erik Barmack, Netflix’s former head of international originals, on the eight-part series.
Marchetta will write the pilot and is working on development with Samantha Strauss, Sarah Walker and Angela Betzien.
The mystery romance by the Looking for Alibrandi author follows 17-year-old Taylor Markham, who was abandoned by her mother at a roadside deli on the outskirts of Jellicoe when she was 11.
After her mentor and guardian Hannah vanishes she meets a mysterious hermit who provides a clue to her identity. This happens amid a territory war between the boarders at her school, kids from the local town and a group of cadets.

Jessica McNamee stars in Heath Davis’ ‘Locusts’.
Far fewer directors in Australia get the chance to make their second feature, or more, than the global average.
According to a new, ground-breaking study of worldwide trends by UK analyst Stephen Follows, while 63.5 per cent of directors have one feature film credit, 36.5 per cent made a second feature.
Just 8.6 per cent directed more than five and only 0.1 per cent have more than 20 feature credits.
By comparison, Screen Australia’s most recent research found 62 per cent of directors had one credit in the five years to June 2017 and 44 of the 144 surveyed – 19 per cent – had made a second feature.
Broken down by gender, that equated to 42 male directors (22 per cent) and just two women (6 per cent). Some 8 per cent had three credits, 4 per cent had four and 7 per cent had 5-plus.

This new clip from next Tuesday's installment of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sees Coulson and Mack chase down Ghost Rider's Hell Charger in Lola, whose flight capabilities are unfortunately on the blink. We don't see how this ends, but the promo for the episode shows Robbie Reyes in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, so I'm thinking not so great for The Spirit of Vengeance. Take a look, and also check out some images from the epsode that'll follow this one, "Lockup", right Here. With one more episode to go until the Christmas break, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is stepping it up a notch…
This review contains spoilers.
3.9 Closure
Well, that escalated quickly. What began with a romantic evening in that made me really fancy a burger, this week, ended with an impromptu skydive through a castle into a portal and onto an alien planet. Indeed, Coulson’s actions in the final minutes of Closure were the kind of events you could imagine Jason Statham recalling in Spy.
Closure, truly, was a testament to what can be achieved in an hour of network telly. The next time Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. starts treading water with a nothing-really-happens filler episode, I’ll doubtlessly type out something along the lines of “remember the time that Rosalind got murdered, Coulson went on a revenge rampage, robbed a bank, put a gun to Ward’s brother’s head,...

How did some fictional friends from the Sydney suburbs sum up a generation? One film fan pays tribute to Josie, Jacob Coote and John Barton 15 years on
Still Looking for Alibrandi: migrant teens deserve their own Ya fiction
Rewatching classic Australian films: week by week
Fifteen years ago, Josie Alibrandi was walking along George Street in her formal dress when she stopped and looked at Jacob Coote in disgust. “In a panel van?” she said. I may not have actually known what was wrong with a panel van, but I fell immediately in love.
To a specific generation of Australians, Kate Woods’ film Looking for Alibrandi is such a cultural touchstone it’s hard to remove it from our own personal history. Based on Melina Marchetta’s 1992 novel, it was critically embraced for thoughtfully telling an authentic non-Anglo-Saxon coming-of-age story from the perspective of a non-male protagonist, a combination rarely explored.

All Australian screen agencies are failing to develop female feature directors, according to Megan Simpson Huberman.
The agencies .cannot continue doing the same things and expecting a different result. And the current result - 15% of Australian dramatic features directed by women - is unacceptable,. she writes in the latest issue of Aftrs. Lumina magazine, which is devoted to gender equality in the screen industry.
Among the other factors which contribute to the under-representation of female directors, she says, are Australian film distribution companies which are run by blokes; and international film festival directors who are mostly male.
A former director of development and production investment at Screen Nsw and development executive at Screen Australia, Simpson Huberman is attached to direct Salvation Creek, a drama about a high-flying magazine editor whose husband and brother die within three days of each other, with producer Heather Ogilvie.

In the duplicitous world of "Covert Affairs," one's ex is never merely an ex.
Auggie Anderson's (Christopher Gorham) former girlfriend Natasha Petrovna, played by Canadian actress Liane Balaban, isn't just a disgruntled old flame, but a notorious hacker whose cyber attack on Washington catches the attention of the CIA on Tuesday's (Aug. 24) episode "Communication Breakdown."
The combination of beauty and tech savvy is a lethal combination for lady-magnet Auggie, who seems to have never quite gotten over Natasha, who would fit into his line of work if she weren't so anarchic.
"In the script Natasha's described as 'chaos in a bottle,'" Balaban tells Zap2it. "She's headstrong and impulsive, but also a woman with deeply held beliefs about what's right and wrong. She is courageous, someone who speaks truth to power."
Auggie and Natasha reconnect and -- as expected when emotions are involved -- it's not all just business.
