It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era” is bookended by a wedding and a funeral. In between, a good deal happens: Babies are born and paternities questioned, long-simmering romances clinched and fresh ones set to bloom; an excursion takes a fraction of the family to France while a film crew keeps the rest of them busy back home. It all adds up to rather more than audiences of 2019’s standalone “Downton Abbey” feature must have expected, if only because the earlier film seemed conspicuously uninterested in starting anything new.
That’s the trouble with television — from a film critic’s perspective, at least. Movies are by their nature story-obsessed — plot-driven locomotives, compelled by conflict, engineered to reach a tidy resolution of some kind within two hours or so. On TV, on the other hand, once a small-screen world has been established, it’s designed to remain open-ended from episode to episode and season to season,...

Whenever modern times become troublesome, Emmy voters love to escape to those corseted glory days when the world bowed sensibly to British aristocracy. They heaped awards on “Downton Abbey” (15 Emmys) “Upstairs, Downstairs” (7) and their TV peers and now, at this time of coronavirus, here comes “Belgravia” on Epix courtesy of “Downton” creator Julian Fellowes and his team of fellow Emmy faves like music composer John Lunn and production designer Donal Woods.
Voters can now get luxuriously lost in costumes that sparkle with silver brocade and pearls as they spin in the dim candlelight struggling to illuminate a duchess’ ball. Grand dames get huffy, of course, servants scheme, soldiers fall for empire and there are whispers of a bastard heir hovering in this elegant neighborhood (Belgravia) of London in the 1840s.
But, wait, it’s important not to lose sight of the fine details in this TV production: how the color...

The feature continuation of “Downton Abbey” reunites the cast and much of the crew of the period TV series with a mandate to deliver more of the glamour, drama and just plain kindness that prompted millions of viewers on both sides of the Atlantic to fall under the spell of the sprawling Crawley family.
“We wanted to make it more luxurious, more exotic, more visually stimulating, more cinematic,” says production designer Donal Woods, who worked on all six seasons of the series as well as the feature, which bows Sept. 13 in the U.K. and Sept. 20 in the U.S.
Written by series creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Michael Engler, the feature reunites Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Jim Carter, and brings in newcomers Imelda Staunton and Geraldine James, as part of an ensemble cast with 17 lead characters. The story picks up in 1927, a few years after the series’ end,...

For the first time, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be split into two parts this weekend, demonstrating the growing importance of the below-the-line TV crafts. Even so, don’t expect too many surprises, with “Game of Thrones” dominating for its bravura “Battle of the Bastards” sequence in several categories and “The People v. O.J. Simpson” doing the same for its zeitgeist-grabbing historical relevance.
However, two of the toughest races will be for production and costume design. Howard Cummings, last year’s Emmy-winning production designer for “The Knick,” goes up against sentimental favorite Donal Woods for the final season of “Downton Abbey,” while last year’s costume design winners Marie Schley (“Transparent”) and Lou Eyrich (“American Horror Story: Hotel”) square off this time in the contemporary category: a further transgender exploration vs. Lady Gaga as the Countess.

“The Times They Are a Changin'” pretty well sums up this year’s Emmy craft contenders for production and costume design. The series all deal with social, political and cultural upheaval, which provided creative opportunities in designing and dressing characters on the cusp of change.

In the race for production design (fantasy or contemporary), Amazon’s adaptation of Philip K.Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle” is building buzz for its retro-future vision, in which the Nazis and Japanese won World War II.
For production designer Drew Boughton, that meant three distinct looks for New York City (run by the Nazis), San Francisco (occupied by the Japanese) and Canon City, Colorado (the neutral zone). New York offered an austere, concrete, gray vibe reminiscent of the Eastern block, San Francisco went more wood and aqua blue and Canon City was rural, like a Western.

In its sixth and final season set in 1925, “Downton Abbey” was all about change and adaptability, as the aristocratic Crawleys struggle to survive and the future of England is passed to the next generation.
The designers outdid themselves this final season with the Episode 7 set piece at the spectacular Brooklands car race, and the finale showcasing the glorious weddings of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael).
“The big event was the motor race, which came about with Mary falling for race car driver Henry [Matthew William Goode],” recalled production designer Donal Woods. “But could we get racing cars from 1925?”
After phoning around for two hours, Woods secured what he needed, including including two Bugattis, an Alpha Romeo and a Bentley worth £3m that won at Les Mans in 1923.
“We had a great time with boys with toys and it was a marvelous day with restored racing cars,...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

They're not the Oscars, but it's still good that there are awards for the people who make our television and film experiences so visually stunning. The Art Directors Guild has just announced the nominees for its 2012 awards.
The Guild honors production designers in television, film and advertising, dividing each medium into distinct categories. The result is that some productions not used to getting a lot of awards love do in fact get mentioned.

The Art Directors Guild, however, took notice when appropriate -- the bizarre, visually interesting and incredible "Pillows and Blankets" episode (a Zap2It pick for one of the best episodes of the year) is nominated.
Of course, lots of the usual suspects make the list as...
