- [on Bill Pertwee] He always used to play himself down as an actor, he always used to say "I'm not really an actor, I'm a turn. All I do is shout a lot and push people around." I think that's Bill typically playing himself down because I think he was a very good actor. There are a number of scenes in Dad's Army (1968) where you see a different side of him.
- [on James Beck] It was a terrible shock. We all knew he was a heavy drinker, but we didn't bother much about it. There were a lot of heavy drinkers about in the business in those days. The only time I thought there might be something seriously wrong was when we were shooting the outdoor scenes for an episode in which the platoon were being chased by a pack of bloodhounds and Captain Mainwaring got them to take off their boots and socks and roll up their trousers. I saw Jimmy's legs and they were purple. It was the last episode he appeared in before he died.
