Germany network Rtl Deutschland has struck a long-term strategic deal with Wiedemann & Berg Film and the producer’s parent, Leonine Studios.
The multi-year agreement covers free TV and streaming, and means Rtl Deutschland will have exclusive rights to German theatrical releases from the two companies, which produced or co-produced the country’s most successful film in each year between 2020 and 2023.

Netflix Germany unveiled a pair of feature films, including Wiedemann & Berg title Brick, true-crime docs and a reality competition series this evening at a showcase in Berlin.
The sizeable slate announcement, which comes a day before a similar UK event, is notable given that Germany’s TV producers have seen the likes of Sky Deutschland pull out of originals and Paramount+ changing direction in their local production efforts.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures International Productions is ramping up two sequels to 2023 German box office hit The Three Investigators – Legacy of the Dragon (Die Drei ??? – Erbe des Drachen). Both adventure mysteries are co-productions from Wiedemann & Berg Film and Deutsche Columbia Pictures Filmproduktion in cooperation with Kosmos Verlag.

Exclusive: The execs behind Prime Video Germany’s big-budget fantasy epic The Gryphon have opened up about forging what originals boss Philip Pratt has dubbed “the biggest [German fantasy] project since The NeverEnding Story.”

With production underway on its Milli Vanilli biopic Girl You Know It’s True, Leonine Studios has revealed the first-look photos for the pic produced by Wiedemann & Berg Film.
Newcomers Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali are set to portray the respective lead roles of Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan. Matthias Schweighöfer is starring as German music producer Frank Farian. The cast also includes Graham Rogers as Milli Vanilli’s U.S. assistant Todd and Bella Dayne as Milli, Farian’s right-hand woman.

Crime show “Divided We Stand,” which will premiere in Germany on the public broadcaster Ard on Feb. 22 with the title “Zerv,” screened this week at the European Film Market in the Berlinale Series Market Selects section. World sales are being handled by Beta Film.
The show, based on true events, follows a group of police officers from West Germany who are sent to Berlin to form a special investigations unit, called Zerv, which aims to root out crimes committed in the German Democratic Republic (Gdr) during the Communist era. Amazon Prime Video has pulled the curtain back on a slate of German originals, which range from an adaptation of the cult novel The Gryphon to a documentary on soccer giants Fc Bayern Munich.
The originals were unveiled at an event on Tuesday, during which Amazon committed to increasing its investment in Germany in the hope of better serving the local market, as well as feeding the growing global appetite for authentic international series. More than 100 emerging U.K. directors have joined together to launch Directors Now, a free downloadable document in which each shares their unique backstory, musings and anecdotes about working in the industry today.
Meant as a resource for the next generation of filmmakers, the document was put together in part to counteract the negative impact the Covid-19 situation has had on new filmmakers who might otherwise have been starting their careers if circumstances were more normal.
Directors Now was created and edited by director Lewis Arnold, who also frequently teaches at the University of Gloucestershire and the National Film and Television School.

W&b Television, the German indie behind Netflix show Dark and the hit German drama 4 Blocks, has been commissioned to make a series tracing the beginnings of German hip-hop for TNT Serie.
Turner Germany’s series channel has ordered six-part series Almost Fly, which will be written and directed by Florian Gaag, who made the 2006 graffiti movement feature documentary Wholetrain.
Almost Fly is set in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin wall and centers on three schoolmates with big dreams whose lives are changed when they are introduced to hip-hop through a nearby U.S. Army base.
Hannes Heyelmann, managing director of the WarnerMedia channels in Germany, said: “With Almost Fly we are exploring a coming-of-age story in a contemporary historical context, capturing the lifestyle of the early 90s for the first time.”

Netflix’s VP for Original Series, Kelly Luegenbiehl, has unveiled five new German originals which will launch on the streaming service in 2019. Speaking at the Medientage München conference this morning, she said the titles will be available in all of the markets where Netflix is present. The projects include Skylines, a contemporary drama produced by Maren Ade who directed, wrote and produced Oscar nominee Toni Erdmann.
The five projects are a variety of genres and formats, including historical and futuristic works, crime drama, a quirky coming-of-age story and a family saga. They add to Netflix’s current slate of three local originals including Dark, Dogs Of Berlin and The Wave which are in various stages of development and production. Dogs Of Berlin is led by showrunner Christian Alvart and launches on December 7.
This represents a significant investment in the German market and Luegenbiehl said, “We want to tell local stories with global appeal.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights for multiple territories to Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “Never Look Away” ahead of the Venice Film Festival, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The distributor nabbed the rights for the psychological thriller for North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand Scandinavia. The film, produced by Beta Cinema, will have it world premiere in Venice on Sept. 4 before it heads to the Toronto International Film Festival.
“Never Look Away” stars Tom Schilling, Paula Beer, Sebastian Koch, Saskia Rosendahl and Ina Weisse and is a period drama spanning over three eras of German history. Schilling stars as a young artist who flees from East Germany to West Germany but still remains haunted by his childhood under the Nazis and communism. He begins to work through his trauma through his paintings.
Jan Mojito produced the film alongside von Donnersmarck, Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann of Wiedemann & Berg Film production, and Christiane Henckel von Donnersmarck. Mojto’s Pergamon Film and Wiedemann & Berg produced with Ard/Degeto, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Beta Cinema.
