On day 144 of the writers strike — a week and a half shy of becoming the longest in Writers Guild of America history — there was a renewed sense of optimism on the jam-packed picket lines Friday as guild members heeded their union’s call to hit the pavement as negotiations with studio CEOs and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers entered their third consecutive day.
At Disney, more than a thousand members of the WGA and performers union SAG-AFTRA walked the woodsy Burbank grounds where many scribes expressed cautious optimism that a deal to end the work stoppage could be imminent following two days of progress at the bargaining table.
“I always feel good when they’re talking … the fact that they’ve been talking for three days straight is terrific,” said veteran showrunner Marc Guggenheim (Legends of Tomorrow).

“Siren” has been canceled at Freeform after three seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The news comes about two months after the Season 3 finale, which aired at the end of May. The series starred Eline Powell as Ryn Fisher, a mysterious young woman (who happens to be a mermaid) who came ashore looking for her sister, who had been accidentally captured by a fisherman.
The series also starred Rena Owen, Alex Roe, Fola Evans-Akingbola and Ian Verdun. It wascreated by Eric Wald and Dean White. The series was executive produced by Emily Whitesell and Wald, with Whitesell serving as showrunner.
The show proved to a hit ratings draw in its first season, with episodes routinely drawing around 1.5 million viewers in delayed viewing. The show was also the most-watched Freeform original in its second season. And even with a ratings dropoff in Season 3, it remained one of the top shows on the network.

Exclusive: Freeform’s Siren has come to an end as the network has opted not to pick up a fourth season of the mermaid drama. The news comes more than two months after the May 28 Season 3 finale.
The cancellation marks a reversal of fortune for Siren, which made a splashy debut in 2018. It was a breakout hit in Season 1 and its second season ranked as Freeform’s most-watched series of the year.
Despite a double-digit ratings drop in Season 3, Siren remained the most watched Freeform original series in linear ratings.
Season 3 of Siren kicked off with a two-episode premiere April 2. The series is based on a story by co-writers Eric Wald and Dean White, and is set in the coastal town of Bristol Cove, known in legend as an ancient home of mermaids. Are you ready for more blood - er, mermaids? Popsugar can exclusively announce that Siren is returning to Freeform for season two come January 2019. The series captivated viewers this March with its unstereotypical take on the usually fantastical mermaid. In Bristol Cove, mermaids are less friendly sea creatures hoping a prince scoops them up and more aligned with a murderous shark, à la Jaws.
Season two will include 16 episodes, and executive producers Emily Whitesell and Eric Wald revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that fans can expect more mermaids to wash ashore next season. Ryn will get some killer friends, it seems. But when does the show actually return? Freeform hasn't shared a hard premiere date just yet, but we do know we can prepare for a drama-filled Winter. In the meantime, get reacquainted with the cast and catch up on all episodes from season one.

Two years into the Trump presidency, New York was the epicenter last week for both dispair and hope about the state of our nation. For those fearing the decline of civility, empathy and respect for others, the tale of Aaron Schlossberg represented the depressing state of affairs: The Manhattan lawyer was caught on tape at a Midtown restaurant in an angry, screaming tirade because workers spoke to a customer in Spanish.
But elsewhere in New York, there was also bit of hope and encouraging sign from the networks last week as they unveiled their new lineups during the upfronts presentations to advertisers. The promise of diversity and inclusion isn’t just feel-good Hollywood talk: As evidenced by the shows they’ve chosen and many of those new series’ auspices, TV continues to improve in how it embraces voices and stories from all walks of life.
