Armageddon Time is a movie written and directed by James Gray, starring Michael Banks Repeta, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins.
A well presented story, perfectly coordinated, balanced and magnificently interpreted. So tender yet bitter, which Gray has rendered onto film with the perfectly measured amount of drama.
Premise
Set in Queens, New York in the early 1980’s, it tells the story of Paul, a boy with a Jewish background who befriends his rebellious classmate Johnny, a Black American. Their friendship is not welcome by Paul’s family, and he has to face the truth of inequality and prejudice.
Armageddon Time (2022) Movie Review
A wonderfully sober feature for film critics, yet rather slow and melancholy for the audience at large. So, we should probably side with both, thinking that it is not James Gray’s pretension to make a movie that will become a mass phenomenon with this number,...

The art of world building is pushing several international films to the forefront this awards season, and Hollywood has sweeping foreign visuals, borderless below-the-line talent and coveted tax breaks to thank for it.
From setting the period in “Belfast,” “Spencer” and “House of Gucci,” to high-action romps in “No Time to Die” and “The Matrix Resurrections,” and arid mastery in “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog,” these overseas productions are expected to be highly recognized at the Academy Awards.
“International contenders will only serve to enhance craft categories this year,” says Dana Salston, whose Intrinsic Agency specializes in below-the-line talent. “International head of departments have been in-demand for 20-plus years, and that is only increasing. The industry is truly a global marketplace now, and certainly this year has shown a massive increase in the need for international talent.”

Neon presents Spencer on just under 1,000 screens, Pablo Larraín’s well-reviewed psychological drama about the weekend Princess Diana rewrote the future of the British monarchy. The film is said to be looking at a $2 million-$2.5 million opening with an 84% Certified Fresh critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes but a 50% audience score (albeit from fewer than 50 ratings).
Meanwhile, Eternals is tracking to a $70M+ opening with flipped scores — 49% critics, 86% audience.
This is a period where counter-programming — a key role of independent film, specialty and arthouse fare, documentaries, barely exists. If recent Marvel Cinematic Universe release weekends are precedent, this one will be all Eternals all the time for the mostly younger crowds that are repopulating theaters.
Yet, even with no new wide-release superhero-mega-franchise hitting last weekend, nothing else opened well (except maybe Funimation’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission). That includes indie Last Night in Soho despite a solid media campaign,...

Paul Webster, the prolific British film producer whose credits include Pride And Prejudice and Atonement, said he broke one of his cardinal rules while making his buzzy Princess Diana biopic Spencer.
Speaking to Film London chief Adrian Wootton for the annual Production Finance Market keynote during the London Film Festival, Webster recounted how the film being shot during Covid created cashflow issues for the production, and despite backing from French institution Cofiloisirs, the team were unable to gather enough money to complete pre-production.
“No British funders came through to support us,” he recalled. “The three producers, myself, Jonas Dornbach of Komplizen in Germany, and Juan Larraín, ended up funding development and early pre-production. “[That’s my] first rule of filmmaking, never use your own money… that required a lot of belief and faith, it was really stressful.”

Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) have joined Kristen Stewart in buzzed-about Lady Diana biopic Spencer, which is now filming in Germany before moving to the UK.
The producers have today released a first-look image of Stewart as the iconic Lady Di.
As Deadline first revealed, Jackie filmmaker Pablo Larraín is directing the Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) script about a weekend in the early ‘90s when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working and that she needed to veer from a path that had put her in line to one day be queen.
The drama takes place over three days in one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor in their Sandringham estate. The producers have not said who will play Prince Charles and their two children: Prince William and Prince Harry.

On Radioactive, production designer Michael Carlin created a sense of enormous scope with a relatively modest budget, recreating period environments from five countries, for a story spanning more than a century.
Based on a graphic novel by Lauren Redniss, the drama tells the story of Marie Curie (Rosamund Pike), the pioneering scientist who changed the world with her discovery of radioactivity. Intercut with episodes from Curie’s life were scenes that spoke to the consequences of her work, staged at Hiroshima, Chernobyl and other destinations.
To carry the viewer through time and space, Carlin would transform sections of Budapest and Spain, to achieve a diverse assortment of looks.
But for the production designer, Radioactive is one of two dramas in the awards conversation this year, the other being The Mauritanian. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the STX title tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Salahi (Tahar Rahim), a man held...

Jason Statham is in negotiations to star in Focus Features’ crime drama “Small Dark Look,” with filmmaker Martin Zandvliet on board to direct.
The project, formerly known as “Body Cross,” centers on the Russian mob in London, with further plot details kept under wraps. Steven Knight, who received an Academy Award nomination for “Dirty Pretty Things,” has written the script.
“Small Dark Look” is produced by Paul Webster. William Oldroyd had been attached to direct two years ago when the project was first unveiled.
Statham starred in 2018’s actioner “The Meg,” and alongside Dwayne Johnson in the “Fast and Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” which has topped $750 million at the global box office. Exclusive: Small Dark Look, the crime drama project formerly known as Body Cross, is becoming a real thing at Focus Features, I hear. Jason Statham is in talks to board the project which recently got a new director, Dane filmmaker Martin Zandvliet. He’s the director of the 2017 Oscar nominated foreign film Land of Mine. Statham’s deal is not locked in just yet.
Zandvliet replaces filmmaker William Oldroyd who was previously on the project, first announced two years ago. Written by Dirty Pretty Things Oscar nominated scribe Steven Knight, Small Dark Look centers around the Russian Mafia in London. The project is being produced by Paul Webster.
Focus is developing the project with the filmmakers who brought on Zandvliet.
Statham counts well over $7.8 billion at the global box office fueled by the Fast and Furious franchise, The Meg, The Expendables series, Spy, and the Transporter movies among several other action titles.

Exclusive: Spencer producer Paul Webster has set the record straight following an online furor over the casting of Prince William in the upcoming Kristen Stewart-Princess Diana film, which is due to shoot in Germany early next year.
A casting call for the role of William aged 11 was posted online yesterday, noting that British actors need not apply for the role “due to new Brexit rules from January 1st 2021” when the UK is due to leave the EU. The post was picked up widely by UK media outlets and caused a stir on social media with various actors lamenting that Brits couldn’t be cast in the role due to Brexit’s end of free movement.
However, veteran UK producer Webster told us this evening that the production is in fact meeting with British actors for the part and Brexit is not an impediment on casting.
